Packers have discussed Ronnie Hillman

The Packers like to build through the draft, not free agency. But they signed one free agent today in Jared Cook, and they could sign another.

Green Bay has been poking around free agent running back Ronnie Hillman, Tom Pelisssero of USA Today reports.

Running back doesn’t seem to be a big need for the Packers, who re-signed James Starks this offseason and are hoping to see a slimmer, fitter Eddie Lacy when camp opens. But if they can get him at the right price, Hillman could be a decent addition for the Packers as well.

Hillman has played his entire four-year career with the Broncos. Last season he had a career-high 863 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, but the Broncos have made clear that C.J. Anderson is their starter going forward, and they haven’t shown a lot of interest in bringing Hillman back.

  1. Tell me which guy was most deserving of being brought back for big bucks by the Broncos.

    Hillman: 7 TDs, 4 100-yard games
    Anderson: 2 TDs, 2 100-yard games

If not Hillman, they better have somebody ready to shoulder a big chunk of the load.

  2. He’ll have to be willing to take a lower salary if he wants to join the Pack. You know TT is offering 70 cents on the dollar. Love It!

  3. I got a better chance of hitting the Powerball Weds.

    1 Hillman sucks
2 Signing Hillman would mean TT would NOT get a precsious comp pick for Casey Heyward
3 Lacy, Stark, & Crockett will be fine
    4 Hillman sucks
5 Ted only signs guys who were cut

  4. James Starks is a glorified third down back and Lacey is a power back who the coaches keep mis using in scatback sets (seriously, i’ve never seen a guy misued as badly, other than Peyton Manning running bootlegs last year). The Packers need at RB is desperate, but the biggest need is a new HC…

  5. If you tell Lacy get in shape it makes sense to at least go through the motions so he sees that you are willing to bring in other people if he doesn’t show up to camp in shape. He looks like he’s lost weight but the season is still a ways away.

  6. If the money is low enough, this is a valuable pick up for GB. But knowing TT and his compensatory pick loving ways, I seriously doubt this happens. If anything, I’d bet this is just kicking the tires in case the draft does not yield a pass catching scat back in the middle rounds.

Unlike TE, this year’s crop of RBs is solid. Again. I doubt this happens.

Hillman has a burst, but goes down easily on first contact. Anderson, once his hip fully healed became a beast. Just ask Kuechly, as CJ ran over him twice, the second time for a touchdown.

  8. Please take him. He runs into the back of his linemen and then falls to the ground.
No need to overpay this guy when most 5th round picks could do just as well for a lot less.

  9. I’ll admit he’s not nearly as good as that child-beating “face-of-the-franchise” up there in Minnesota, but as a change of pace back he might do well in the Packers’ scheme. Could be worth signing him, if it’s at a reasonable salary.

  10. Very pleased that Ted got the Jared Cook deal done.
It allows us to focus on our greater needs in the draft.

Seriously doubt this one will get done.
With a renewed/fit Eddie Lacy and the always dependable James Starks back in the fold, I envision GB allowing J. Crockett to battle the 2 or 3 unsigned free agents for the final roster spot.

Looking forward to the draft. Taking care of business.
    ILB, OLB, DT, G.

And of course, the mighty Minnesota Child Abusers winning their annual off season championship once again.

  11. they signed one free agent today in Jared Cook, and they could sign another.
    —————-
Fans of teams that sign free agents have low self esteem. Or at least that is what I am told.

  12. I’m sure Hillman has also discussed the Packers, while sharing a good laugh with his buddies watching the Pack’s last 2 postseason performances.

  13. mongo

Few on here like mongo are as much or more inaccurate consistently. I have to learn to scroll past like the Pathetics fan posts.

The links are in the story. Can you not read a chart?

    Hillman: 7 TDs,
Anderson: 5 TDs, and missed a game was also hurt.

  15. Signing Hillman would likely signal the end of John Kuhn in the green and gold. There’s only so many spots for RB’s.
KOOOOHNN is north of 30. 34 in Sept.
It’s not unusual nowadays to put a TE in the backfield as a lead blocker. What would be missed is his blitz pick ups in passing situations.
I’d like to see him stay as a coaching asst. He’s a very smart man.

  16. “Discussed” is a long way from signing him. I can imagine the Packers have “discussed” dozens of free agents but until they:

    1) Bring him in for a visit.
    2) Wait a couple of weeks after the visit just to show the player that they are in no hurry.
    3) Get him at the lowest possible price.

Once all 3 are met, then there is a chance the Packers will sign him. Right now, I suspect that Hillman’s agent has leaked this to the local newspaper in an attempt to drum up interest in his client.

  17. I never fail to get a laugh out of the pathetic Viking fans making fun of OUR post season record. Their team hasn’t won a playoff game since 09 but you wouldn’t know it by the way they talk. And ariani, why can’t you just troll from the one account? Codythao isn’t fooling anyone.

  18. the face of packer franchise is FELONS ….. Hornung, Sharper, Guion, Chumura, Quarless, Jolly ….. did I miss anyone…….plus a fan base thats KILLS their head coaches DOG ……. what a great legacy …….!!!

  19. If they want to sign him to a cheap 1 year 2 million dollar deal with incentives, go for it. Nothing wrong with having depth at RB and Starks is no stranger to the injury bug despite the two year deal he just signed.

  20. It’s a good thing for the rest of the NFL that the Packers don’t value offensive line…

    ==================================
Aaron Rodgers is the face of the Packers right now.

All you’re doing is picking out Packers that have been charged with crimes. One could easily do that with the Vikings as well.

But the face of the Vikings is a guy who beat his kid, has sired several children by different woman (some kids he hasn’t even met), and throws orgies for family members.

Sharper was also Viking for four years.

Paul Hornung wasn’t tried for any crimes that I know of. How could he be a felon? Chmura was found not guilty.

Over 45 Vikings players have been tried for crimes since 2000.

Even the Vikings’ owners, the Wilf’s, had to pay over 85 million for “organized crime type” fraud, scamming their partners and being found to have committed fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty, and breaking NJ state racketeering laws.

Your favorite team’s owners are complete slumlord scumbags.

He’ll be their starter from day one bc he’s already better than the whole organization.
    /////////////////////

Wow, I just don’t know whether to laugh or cry at these comments. If these two “you-know-who” Vikings fans ever come to love the Packers, I swear I’ll switch allegiance and become a Vikings fan, just so as not to be on the same team. Cheese Sauce!!!

Discuss, that’s all the Packers ever do! The Vikings get and the Packers DISCUSS…..
==================================In the last 5 years, the Packers are 8-2-1 against the Vikings.

The Vikings haven’t won a playoff game since 2009. The Packers won the Super Bowl in 2010.

You’re right. The Vikings get…their butts kicked. And then the Packers fans like to discuss it.

  24. Vikings fans are gearing up early this year. Ah, the sure signs of spring – the draft approaches, vikings fans talk of dynasties and the Packers continue to get better through a judicious approach to free agency and a draft strategy that consistently finds and develops young talent. Im looking forward to football this year. I like our chances. Go Pack Go!!!

  25. Cmon pack another back? You need “d” not another back.
Unless you think Eddie lacy is going to eat his left arm and can’t hold the ball due to know arm. He is actually looking better, I think he is down to 272 now.

  26. Truly both comical and pathetic.

When Green Bay stays out of the free agent market, the football geniuses around here criticize Ted for his inaction.

When the Pack jumps in, Ted gets criticized for signing stiffs.

Sorry geniuses — you can’t have it both ways.

  27. What have they built through the draft… Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers? Those guys should have multiple rings, or trips, to the SB by now. ARod wins in spite of Ted Thompson, not because of him. Most overrated GM in professional sports.

  28. “He’ll be their starter from day one bc he’s already better than the whole organization.”
Maybe you should have taken note that Denver released him but considering the Broncs lost their qb and a bunch of starters he is indeed better that their whole organization, what will lowly Denver do now.

  29. “Discuss, that’s all the Packers ever do! The Vikings get and the Packers DISCUSS…..”

Yet its the Packers who still do all the winning, why is that.

  30. This looky-see may be because this is the last year of Lacy’s rookie contract and GB may be looking at adding some insurance in the event Eddy has a big year and visions of a big payday.

  31. Elway is just a moron and a cheater with that horseface.

How on earth can they be under the cap one year and not able to afford all of these players the next if Manning’s 21 mil per is now off the books?

    It just doesn’t make sense.

Memories of 1995, 1996 and 1997 with the Denver Cap Cheats.

So why don’t you try and change the culture on here, and stick to the article’s topic? You troll just as much as most on here.

    I’ll start….

This is just a depth move, if that. Getting Nelson back and Rodgers back in form is the Packers real off season goal.

Odd thing to say by a fan of a team that has more arrests over the pas 6 years than any team in the NFL. Nevermind that Sharper started his criminal ways in Minnesota when he was accused but never charged of doing shady things at clubs because the local police ignored them.

  35. i wish we could kick the tires on a middle linebacker … now that would be worth talking about….. back up rb…. yawn

  36. viking1961 –Packers arrested

you may be incorrect, as of 2015 the Vikings had 45 arrested and leads the league.
You did forget to list Mossy Cade.

  37. “GB may be looking at adding some insurance in the event Eddy has a big year”

True but you know how TT just loves to resign his own worthy FA players and if Lacy does well it will be TT paying him the big bucks not some other team.

  38. Anyone want to make a guess on who leads the league in arrests this year? HINT, the fan base wears big yellow boogers on their heads on game day!

  39. The Packers need someone to run the ball, because Lacy is clearly a bust. Guy can’t run 10 yards without getting winded.

  40. Who the hell cares who was arrested when. Cant take the ghetto outta half this players now a day. Is it really a shocker when they get arrested?

The leader is the Patriots, with 2. There have only been 8 players arrested this year, and none of them are from the NFC North.

    ====================================

He had a 27 yard run against the Vikings this year, while rushing for 100 yards against the vaunted Viking defense.

  43. I’m feeling for Packers fans right now. I would not want this guy anywhere near my team. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and wants to do well but let’s face it – he stinks. I can’t believe the Broncos kept him in 2015. The dude can get to the sideline pretty quickly and I think that was their strategy early in games – tire out the defense by running them sideline-to-sideline. But even when that’s not the play he still thinks he can outrun defenders to the edge and 9 times out of 10 he’s wrong. He was one of the most frustrating RBs to watch that has played for the Broncos since Tatum Bell. Both wanted to be Clinton Portis and neither had the size or balance. Hillman is also a fumbler.

  44. For the record: Dan Devine’s dog was not shot by a fan. It was shot by a neighboring farmer because it was killing his chickens.

    True.
