Anthony Davis issues cryptic April 1 tweet about his future

April 1 sucks.

The first day of the fourth month of the year is well known for the perpetration of deliberate falsehoods. But there’s an ethic to the process. Apart from the question of whether the lies are actually humorous (ideally, they all would be) is the notion that the lies should be relatively obvious.

Too many of this year’s NFL-related April Fool’s Day jokes aren’t as obvious as they should be, either because they’re too plausible or because they deal with players or issues or whatever that aren’t that relevant. Which is making it extra hard to discern joke from reality.

Case in point: retired 49ers tackle Anthony Davis said this via Twitter: “I’ll be filing for reinstatement to the NFL later this year. Dealing with Trent is giving me a headache.”

It’s already been widely reported that Davis will return to football after a year off. And time is of the essence when it comes to a return, given that the offseason program launches on Monday.

The “Trent” in the tweet likely is G.M. Trent Baalke, who may not be inclined to refund to Davis the bonus money he surrendered to the 49ers upon retirement. As PFT reported in February, Davis paid back the bonus money applicable to 2015. Since his contract tolled for a year while he retired, Davis may think he should get the money back and pick up his career right where it left off.

And Baalke may not be willing to do that.

Alternatively, Davis may be angling for an outright release, so that he can continue his career for a team that doesn’t run an offense that mandates plenty of in-game running from offensive linemen via coach Chip Kelly’s up-tempo style.

Whatever it all means, it would be a lot easier to decipher if the calendar showed any day other than April 1.

Thought they were referring to NBA basketball AD

  2. What’s cryptic about this? “I’m applying for reinstatement later this year” isn’t “the white dog bays at the midnight moon” or something.

  3. Davis and Kaepernick are done in the locker room over their actions last season. Both bailed on the team when things were looking a bit tough. Now Baalke has to move them while they’re in situations of limbo, which is REALLY tough, but neither will play for the 9ers again.

  4. Take the bonus he refunded and put it back on as offseason workout and game day roster bonuses.

If AD is here, getting in shape, learning the new system and is active on game days … then he gets all his money back. It’s a win-win.

Why that sounds completely reasonable and beneficial to all parties involved.

You aren’t thinking that Trent Balke – henchmen of Jed York, who ran off Jim Harbaugh and dismantled a team that went to 3 straight NFC Championships just because Harbaugh got too much credit for his ego’s liking – is a reasonable sort of person, are you?

Kaep’s contract is fully guaranteed. If they were going to move him, they would have. Davis is way too talented to be released. Both are going to be on the Niners next year. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

  7. Denver wants to trade Tackle Ryan Cladey.

Trade Kaep to Denver for Clady and a 5th or 6th and let Davis sit on the beach enjoying retirement or trade him away too.

Both Kaep and Davis have pissed off teammates and management with their actions last season and are persona non grata in the locker room

Davis quit on the team after the draft screwing over the O-Line and Kaep quit on his teammates by opting for surgery as soon as he was benched

  8. Is this an “April Fools” joke?? If not, I don’t know how more unprofessional Anthony Davis can get. Airing his passive aggressive bull**** on “Twitter” is Junior High school drama. Some reporter needs to corner him and get to the bottom. What is he upset about? Does he want to play for the 49ers? What did Trent Baalke do to him? Act like an adult or change careers… Geez…

  9. I got an April Fools joke for Davis; after he un-retires, trade him to Cleveland. Actually, that may be the cruelest joke any team can pull on their players.

  10. Well, it’s April Fools, so there is that.

However, Davis has shown himself to be a low-character guy for quite some time. Davis ripped Harbaugh and his staff in 2014.

Davis ripped his fellow team mates, especially Joe Staley, last year. Calling Staley weak and soft. He also ripped Brown and Pears.

All that from a guy who has a reputation on the 49ers and when in college of taking plays off and being lazy through his career. Especially in 2014 when he was, by far, the least effective healthy starter.

So it’s hard to know if it’s Davis being Davis the Jerk or Davis the Wanna-Be Comedian. In either case, he’s still a jerk and not nearly as good as he thinks he is since he’s anything but a ‘max effort’ guy.

  11. I don’t know why everyone jumping on Baalke. He’s hired to run the circus, and his job description doesn’t include turning it over to the clowns. The team lost 6 of it’s last 8 under Harbaugh with a full and mainly healthy lineup in 2014. Obviously something wasn’t working. In 2015 the team was sucker punched by off field player incidents, a string of retirements, and Davis hiatus, to the point where they were considered longest shots to win the SB by Vegas. Add in the spate of early season injuries, Vern Davis quitting on the team, Kaepernick unable to adjust to a new offensive system etc. and the 5-11 record has to be considered overachieving. Trent has to fix the culture, first and foremost, cleansing the malcontents and egomaniacs is the first step.

  12. It must suck to have a job that requires you to follow people’s tweeters. That would take away my manhood.

  13. Anthony Davis, do us all a favor: shut up and get back to work. You decided to “take a year off” just because you felt like it. You didn’t get fired. You didn’t get laid off. Your job is to play a game and collect millions of dollars. News flash you prima dona, you’re the headache.

    *********

Clady has higher value that Kaep and his dwindling career and big contract. That trade straight up would be a steal for the 49ers. There’s no way they get a draft pick as well.
