Report: Colin Kaepernick met with John Elway on Thursday

AP

Although the 49ers elected not to release quarterback Colin Kaepernick before his $11.9 million salary became guaranteed this week, a trade remains a possibility. And the Broncos appear to be the most likely destination, should Kaepernick be traded.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Kaepernick met with Broncos General Manager John Elway at Elway’s house in the Denver area on Thursday. According to the report, it’s the second time that Elway and Kaepernick have met this offseason.

Such a meeting would only be legal if the 49ers gave the Broncos permission to talk to Kaepernick. There’s been talk that the 49ers are open to allowing Kaepernick’s agents to discuss a re-worked contract with the Broncos, in order to help facilitate a deal. It’s hard to see why Kaepernick would agree to take less money than he’s already guaranteed for this year, but it’s possible that Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco badly enough to take a pay cut. It’s also possible that the 49ers would agree to pay part of Kaepernick’s salary in order to get a trade done.

At the moment, the Broncos can’t fit Kaepernick under their 2016 salary cap, so a new contract would have to get done before a trade could be consummated.

The Broncos currently have Mark Sanchez atop their quarterback depth chart, but they’ve said they plan to add at least one more quarterback before minicamps begin.

  1. It seems this deal is in the bag. I’m thinking both teams have a trade in place and it could include a player or two Denver is looking to unload. Clady possibly but SF has Staley already.

  2. This is the Broncos we are talking about, they can fit anyone under the cap. They are masters at it with a proven track record of guilty offenses. If jaeger nick wants to go there he won’t lose a dime.

  3. If I’m Kaepernick, I take less money to get away from Chip, Baalke, and York.

He’s not great, but a change of scenery might be good for him, and although they’ve lost some pieces, the Denver D will keep him off the field longer than the 49ers D.

  4. Next 2 first round draft picks, million dollar fine for the team, 500,000 dollar fine for elway, they are repeated offenders since they had been caught cheating before.

  5. It would be a good business decision for Kap to take a pay cut this year for one year, play on a great team and rebuild his reputation. If Osweiller can get 18 million, Kap doesn’t have to be that great to get a great contract next year, much better than his current deal with the 49ers.

  6. PFT-“At the moment, the Broncos can’t fit Kaepernick under their 2016 salary cap, so a new contract would have to get done before a trade could be consummated.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There are other ways to get under the cap besides Kaep redoing a contract…..Cutting players, redoing/extending the contract of someone else to get cap relief and trading a player or two to SF come to mind.

  7. The Broncos won a SB without getting much out of the QB position. Between Sanchez and Kaepernick they seem determined to do it again

  8. I wonder if one of the conversations went like this……

Kap: say John, I don’t remember you ever taking a paycut.
Can you help me out with that?

Elway: well, it’s like this…..I let my best option go because I thought I could get him to play on the cheap. Now I have to try and save face and try to get you to play for what I offered him.

  9. Colin going to Denver would be best for both franchises.. Would love to see Colin work with Kubiak and Elway. The kid has a lot of talent but serious skillset flaws and his mental approach needs tweaking. Who better than Kubiak and Elway? For the 49ers it would establish a good long term game plan. Get Gabbert ready, draft Goff and give him the time behind Gabbert to watch and learn then be ready to compete in 2017..

  10. Don’t take a pay cut but get the guaranteed dollars next yr or in a signing bonus which can be spread out over the length of the contract….this very likely could be his last big contract don’t give it away…..

  11. Colin has been recuperating in vail for most of the off season following surgery there. Fyi. So he’s only 2 hrs. away. He’s probably learning what most..not named ossweiler.. that colorado is the place to be these days. The best economy in the country!

  12. Anyone who has ever been in a bad work situation knows how he feels. Yeah he can make 12 mil next year but going to work everyday miserable isn’t fun. It’s always better to get urself in a better happier situation even if it’s less money. He might make less next year but he could end up making more down the line. Besides let’s say he stays there in sf. He’d have to go through this all over again next offseason. Best to get this year out of the way and move on.

  13. As a Pats fan, I hope the Kaepernick doesn’t sign with the Broncos. Like Osweiler, Kaepernick has a strong arm to throw a football through wind and snow. If we face them in the regular and the playoffs, we would be at a disadvantage since Brady doesn’t have the arm strength to match that kind of firepower. If he tries, his passes will die in the wind and snow before getting to the receiver.

  14. This could be a high risk, high reward situation. It could also be a high risk, no reward situation. Kaep was benched last year. At his best, he was a second tier QB. Does he really think that he deserves a top 5 qb contract?

  15. What is his RGIII nonsense? Kap has done WAY more than RGIII. Not only that, Kap is much stronger physically and will hold up better. The only reason Kaepernick had those surgeries was so that he was legally injured by April 1st, thereby forcing some leverage from the 49ers. Not only that, he has a stronger arm than RGIII and doesn’t have a tendency to ignore film study.

The biggest weakness Kaepernick has isn’t reading a defense. It’s anticipation throws. However, in the Shanahan/Kubiak offense that weakness is as covered as it can possibly be. Kaepernick is ideally suited to this offense, which is why so many 49er fans wanted Shanahan or Kubiac a couple years ago. Kaepernick will definitely revive his career in Denver. Elway knows this, and is doing everything he can to get him.

  16. Kaepernick is a perfect replacement for Peyton. Denver wouldn’t have to touch their offensive approach. Kaepernick’s style is so similar to Peyton’s and they’re both study hounds and so intelligent.

  17. Kap is a pistol QB. He’s effective running the ball, hitting LBs and DBs. He’s not a drop back passer. In five seasons he does not have one season with 300 completions or more than 21 passing TDs. He does have effective seasons of running for 400, 500 and 600 yards, which is what made the 49ers difficult to defend. The sacks, though, took their toll. Fix SFs OL and maybe, Kap is the guy to go to. But the 49ers also need receivers. Denver, for the moment, has both.

  18. Kaep sucks, and I really, really want to see him continuing to suck in the NFC West. I hope he plays his whole career here, just not on my team.

If the Broncos want to see him suck in the AFC West, they should let another team do it. It’ll be better for them.

What is Elway thinking trying to get a mentally weak QB (in multiple ways… emotionally and information processing), who can’t be a drop back QB, yet is also starting to get destroyed physically as evidenced by his three procedures and all the talk that he might not be healed yet thus keeping the Niners from likely even being able to cut him.

So John and any fan should ask themselves, what happens when a mobile QB start becoming injury prone and in time loses their edge in athleticism? Especially one that has trouble making multiple reads and delivering the ball on time and accurate.

They become a backup or are bounced from the league.

How about one that has already started his crash and burn with full athleticism?

I wouldn’t say this is a low risk for Elway.

    1. He’ll have to pay alot/all of Kaep’s contract this year. Now sure they can get out of it in future years, but it is still something they will have to adjust to.

    2. That adjustment means they’ll have to cut other players to bring him on. Maybe Clady deserves it because he’s injured alot, but when not, he’s worth a roster spot. So in essence they’ll have to get rid of a player who could help them. All for a guy who think can help them, but likely only helps destroy them.

    3. The Broncos just won a Superbowl. This is supposed to be their drive to repeat, like John once did. That won’t come close to happening with Kaepernick. I don’t think they’ll even make the playoffs. They might not even be close. Despite the losses, this will be a massive drop, and the blame is going to rightly land on the feet of Elway. He has other options. Fitzpatrick is available, and McCown can probably be traded for. Both are immensely better QB’s then Kaepernick.

I’m sure the Broncos could recover after a disastrous year of Kaepnerick at QB… but it sure won’t be a fun ride from now to then.

There are no great options for the Broncos. But there are better ones that Kaepernick. Sounds like the car salesman in Elway is trying to sell a clunker to HIMSELF and the fans… and they’re buying it!

But I guess that’s what happens in both situations. Being desperate for a QB in the NFL is like being desperate to have a car when visiting a dealership in life. People often get into a bad situation because you want to stop the other bad situation. Elway should know better. Instead it seems like he’s blinded despite all his experience.

  19. If the meeting was with Kraft or Bellicheck, the pats would get docked draft picks, fined, and it would be front page news for the next 5 months

Other teams can pump crowd noise, illegally meet with players on other teams, and just get a slap on the wrist or nothing

  20. Kap can play. In a world where “6 Start Brock” gets paid huge bucks, no way in hell Kap takes a pay cut from what would already be well below what DENVER was willing to pay Osweiler.

  21. You got it wrong, Elway just offered Kaep a job at his Auto Dealership. Kaep might play a little football, depending on the league min. salary.

Oh, and York/Baalke get lube jobs for life.

  22. I’d bet Elway said Look Kap you stunk like a fresh Turd last year and you were nothing but Trouble in the Locker room. Take a pay cut and prove you are really a starting QB and not a clipboard holder and next year we will reward you. My guess is Kaepernick will turn down any offer of a pay cut because he knows he’s not really a NFL QB but more like Semi pro.

  23. Both Kaepernick and Mark Sanchez got their teams to the championship game in each of their first two seasons as QBs on teams with solid rosters. Now they’re both on a team with a solid roster. However, my money is on Trevor Siemian to open the season as the Broncos’ starting QB. This should be a very exciting pre-season for the Broncos. I can’t recall a team that had a three way competition like this, for the starting QB on a team that will be one of the top rated teams entering the season. All three are capable of winning a super bowl. Is John Elway awesome or what!!!

  24. Elway’s talk worked on the G.O.A.T…..Kap is already a Bronco by tge time you read this. Elway might even stamp that 7 on his jersey to sink the hook….on 2nd thought, nah, just offer to pay him outside the salary cap! Thats how we roll, or the salary KAP! WHOOOOO! #back2back. #SB51CHAMPS

  25. He played with a great defense once before and did alright. His kryptonite was the Seahawks. Won’t have to worry about them in Denver, unless both teams go through same weed distributors.

  26. I’ll bet Elway told Kaepernick if you become a Bronco 1st thing you do is lose those 10 times the size of your big head Hats. Oh yeah those ear buds have to go to. For the price your overpaid ass is getting you need to study the opposing teams Defenses not listen to music.

  27. And I SO MUCH wanted to see Mark Sanchez as the Denver starter!
That would be fun to watch on Monday Night Football.

Trevor Siemian?? The Big Ten’s former 11th ranked QB? He of the one NFL career attempt? NCAA career 55o of 934 for 5931 yds in 44 games for a whopping 5.8 AY/A with a TD/INT ratio of 27/24, that Trevor Siemian?

Really? Something from the 80s again. Before you were born. That didn’t affect the level of play, only stadium finance. Really? Would you like to enlighten us as to your repeated statements under all your aliases? Please. We’ll wait. Go back 40 years son. We’ll work on the competitive advantages that NE has been hacking since Tam And BB came together. Ooooh, Von Miller. …. was busted for hiding weed use. Oooh, weed make him SB MVP!. See how stupid it sounds when someone else says it? Children, stay off drugs and mercury filled shellfish, Respectfully, The Mad Hatter (that believes BB and TB never cheat).

  30. “What is Elway thinking trying to get a mentally weak QB (in multiple ways… emotionally and information processing),”

    ———————————————————————
He is probably thinking that he is a Hall of Fame QB and been in football his entire life and knows more about quarterbacks than you do!

  31. Swap first round picks and Broncos throw in a second rounder. Baalke then uses the late first round pick on Jaylon Smith because he loves players that are hurt or recovering. Meanwhile, Elway drafts Goff with the seventh pick from the Niners and trades Kap to the Jets for a fourth round pick. Broncos salary cap worries solved. With the third pick, Baalke picks an offensive lineman from Mankato State. Chip Kelly cuts him when teams need to get down to 75 players.

  32. It is funny that people think Kaepernick is elite or even good. Then the same people talk about how a good Denver D will take the pressure off of Kaepernick. Is he good, or is he not? My money is n not. He proved last year he could not carry a team. He has also shown he cannot throw a football any better than someone who has never played organized football. Either way, he won’t be in football much longer. When you lose your job to Gabbert, you are pretty much on your way out of the game.

Don’t be surprised. This guy has all the physical tools and is finally healthy. Kubiak will coach this guy up unlike what he had in college. Remember Kubiak somehow turned Schaub into a pro bowl and 12 win QB. Siemian had a very good preseason last year and Osweiller didn’t play at this level until his 3rd season imo. Scouts are saying he has a high ceiling. We’ll see.

  34. I saw Siemian in college. I also saw Joe Montana in college. Montana went in the 3rd round. If you told someone way back then how awesome Montana was going to be, they’d have laughed at you. I’m seeing greatness in Siemian. Laugh all you want. Join the crowd that laughed at Montana.

The 80’s??? Try ’98, there was no salary cap to cheat in the 80’s nor any championships won by whatever cheating the Broncos might or might not have been doing then. But then you knew that.
I am a Giants fan. During the 80’s Parcells cheated by having guys open the tunnel doors to change wind currents during opponent’s FG attempts. The same Bill Parcells that had the stones to get ticked off when Bill Walsh cheated by playing games with his headsets. At least Giants and Niners fans will admit the truth. Just as Parcells and Walsh did
