The 49ers may indeed send quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the Broncos. But the status of the the talks between the two teams is being overstated.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the 49ers and Broncos currently don’t have an agreement on trade compensation, officially or in principle. In other words, the notion that the only thing keeping a deal from happening is a deal between the Broncos and Kaepernick on a reduced contract is, as the source put it, a “real stretch.”

So why has ESPN reported that an accord between Kaepernick and the Broncos represents the only impediment to a contract? As the source put it, “someone wanted it out there.”

That “someone” apparently is someone who’d like to see the deal get done, and someone who hopes that planting a report that a deal is close will provide the push necessary to get it done.

A trade could still happen, but more work needs to be done than the Broncos and Kaepernick working out a deal regarding whether and to what extent he’ll reduce his $11.9 million base salary, which became guaranteed in full as of Friday.

  1. Reporters being led around like sheep. Great work. Anyone with a brain knows 7 has little to no value, especially at anything north of vet-min.

He needs to be cut to get on another team. Otherwise it’s him in Santa Clara.

  2. Just get it done already, the niners are a mess, he doesn’t want to be there, and now anthony davis is having issues with baalke just like everyone else…
I’d rather have gabbert and goff battle it out anyway, please god save this franchise from all the idiots…

    -die hard niners fan!

  3. 49ers in the driver’s seat here IMHO. He fits well with Chip, they have tons of cap space so his contract is no obstacle, and next year they aren’t going to good be regardless of what happens or doesn’t with this deal.

Denver needs more than Sanchez. Their window is open to win another Lombardy. They need another veteran QB and Kaepernick is probably their guy.

  4. The first report came from Adam Shefter, which means he was speculating. Adam is the worst sports journalist and his buddy Chris Mortenson the second worst.

  5. If kaperchoke stays in Santa Clara they’ll be even more of a train wreck. All this talk of trades and possibly cutting him and then he stays? He’s so fragile mentally as it is, does anyone think he would be able to overcome all this speculation? No way. For a franchise that apparently has it better then everyone else they look pretty dysfunctional. I live in Seattle and I can see the smoke from that dumpster fire from all the way up here.

  6. It’s really as simple as trade Kap, get compensation, and MAKE SURE you get your hands on Goff or Wentz…or to a lesser extent Lynch…but Baalke will find a way to screw that up.

  7. I understand that the Broncos will always be able to have that Superbowl win and any fan base would want there favorite team to win a SB. Going all in has consequences, signing older players adds up fast, and now some of the young players have walked, while it paid off last year, they are in a tough spot now.

They have to convince Kaep who has 12 million dollar pay day to rework it with a team he has no loyalty to. I understand the 9ers aren’t treating him the best, and its nice to feel wanted, but that isn’t his problem. I am sure there is some goofiness with Denver will do whatever hoops to satisfy the cap and league rules. Sure he was a great athlete and he may be in a similar spot to when he was successful with the 9ers with a good defense (if they can keep it going after losing multiple pieces AND stay healthy) a good run game and pass catchers. This division is going to be WIDE open and fun to watch for the next several years.

  8. I have always liked Kaepernick. I think he would do well in that system. Leverage advantage – Denver. There is a better chance of his career being resurrected in Denver. They don’t need him to resurrect the Broncos . If he wants money, stay in SF. If he goes to Denver on a one year low ball pay day and does well, guess what? The money will come and he might even get a ring out of it. I think it’s a win win situation for both if he goes to Denver.

  9. Can you guys get a legitimate source on Kaepernick and this trade deal……and if you say it’s coming from Tim Kawakami, you will lose all respect.

  10. if they can get something out of him, godspeed to em…we made an incredible mess of his talent post Harbaugh

  11. Stick to your guns Baalke. A 2nd round pick is the least he should accept from Elway period.
I think a 2nd this year and a 4th in 2017 should do the trick, if not, enjoy Sanchez.

Let’s not forget Schefter – pre ESPN – worked at both The Rocky Mountain News AND The Denver Post.

  13. This is like watching somebody in the gym sit and prepare mentally for 15 minutes and pump himself up enough to finally do his 3 reps on the bench press. Either do it or move on!

  14. I’m starting to really hate this situation. 49ers, he hates you and chip kelly, so find a way to get it done. Broncos, your other options are Sanchez or rookie, so pony up. You have a super bowl team and you are being cheap with the most important position on the field. So dumb.

  15. John Elway didn’t meet with him to discuss fantasy baseball drafting ideas.

I understand that maybe not enough of the details are done for sure, but there have to be enough of them done for Elway to have been given permission to talk to Kaepernick.

  16. Close to saying “See ya Pre-Madona”.
As much as Blaine is not the answer, this soap opera has to end sooner than later…. If you don’t want a player, move on. If you don’t like a player just because he was a Harbaugh guy, shame in your MGMT skills. Grow up that ego too. Kap- grow up too either way.

  17. I’m slowly, but surely, becoming of the opinion that the only folk giving a rat’s behind about Colin Kaepernick is the media.

    Exit Tim Tebow…enter Colin K ….

  18. This roller coaster ride of a non story reminds me of the story of Big John Football.

  19. Clearly that’s the Broncos putting out feelers to see if Kap will take less money to come to Denver and get out of the city of dysfunction is SF. That has got to be some of the poorest and dumbest decision-making in NFL history that has torn that team apart. What seemed like a growing dynasty has crumbled like confetti at the super bowl that the 49ers won’t see again for a very long time.

  20. Adam shelfter and BSPN just wanted to be first… Don’t ever let the facts get in the way of the good story

  21. ESPN lost any credibility they had for journalism a good while ago. Now they’re just shills for agents, front office execs & league officials. They should stick to reporting scores & opinions.

  22. Mid round pick is not enough compensation. It only takes one injury and the 49ers will wish they hadn’t let him go.

Kap seems to have hurt his ability to be an effective team leader for the 49ers right now, but attitudes change with the installation of a new offense and shared hard work.

Start training camp with him as the #2 and if he CLEARLY wins the job give it to him. Teammates want to win so will accept going with whoever is better.

  23. Everyone thought this guy was great just a couple of years ago. I don’t get to see him play much but I wonder why so much negative talk about him. Is he really that bad now?

  24. Broncos promised full-length locker room mirrors on three walls. Kapaernick wants four.

    Stalemate.

  25. Kap has a contract and shouldn’t accept a dime less.
If they want to cut him and let him be a free agent then that would be great for Kap. Pocket the niner money and then squeeze whatever he can out of who ever wants him the most.

  26. “We want you so bad we’re willing to pay you less that what you will be guaranteed to earn next year.”

Why is Kap even considering this? Sure, if you’re the average guy and your potential employer is offering you less money for a better job, you might jump. But this looks like less money for the same job for a company that may or may not be any better to work for than his present employer.

So, why is a pay cut even on the table? Who’s Kap’s agent and why is he still his agent?

  27. 4 players here working with the media – Kap, the Niners, the Broncos, and the agent. Schefter gets almost all of his stuff from agents (as does PFT I’m guessing).

  28. can’t believe the 9ers let last Thursday go without a cut. They need a finance course in “understanding sunk costs as you make your next purchse.”

  29. Can someone explain to me why if you’re the 49ers you trade Colin Kaepernick to the Broncos for anything other than a 1st or 2nd round pick?

Is he worth that? No, but by pursuing him the Broncos have made it clear they need a QB and you have leverage.

You’re not in a position where you need to dump his salary. Blaine Gabbert legitimately played better than him last season, and even when he was at peak form three years ago under Jim Harbaugh, he showed he had a number of flaws that weren’t likely to get corrected from a technical point. It’s hard to win it all with that, it’s hard to even get deep in the postseason. Cam Newton needed to correct similar technical and defense-reading mistakes before he could take the next step.

The 49ers aren’t likely to take a top QB in the draft, but if you get another pick in the Top 63 maybe it is worth it.

So hold out for something good.

It doesn’t seem like you need explaining those lines up there are reason enough, This isn’t trading for an RG3 or an unknown where someone doesn’t know how they will do in the NFL.

They can ask for a 1st round pick and you know what if the 9ers were smart they would say “Chip Kelly knows what you have @ QB with Sanchez he saw it the last few yeasr” You aren’t going to get a NFL starting QB that can help defend SB title in that draft so lets do a deal for Kaep with the 1st round,

The 9ers have TONS of holes that need filling, and they are probably trying to fill more than one with this trade. So maybe a starter, a role player, and a draft pick is what they are going for. It seems like unless you for OL or DL its going to be tough to fill some of those spots this is one of those classes that come along once a decade where its a not as deep on talent.

Elway wouldn’t ever pick up the phone for a 1st or 2nd rd pick.

Chip Kelly?! Everyone beside the 49ers know that Chip Kelly is a clown. I don’t think the Broncos would lend very much credence to much of anything that Chip Kelly has to say!

  33. Ol’e El Cheapo Elway still trying to sell his “If you take less now, you can make more later” BS. Many QB don’t last 10 years, so where is his BS coming from?

  34. If and when a deal is completed, then we can all talk about what happened. That’s how the sports media used to work. They’d report on stuff that happened. Nowadays, the media creates stories, and reports on their own creations. Then they go back and forth with false updates every so often to keep us interested. Far too often, none of the reports turn out to be true. We keep figuring this out, but then we keep falling for the same shenanigans. Don’t blame the media. They wouldn’t do it if we didn’t fall for it every time. It’s a great escape from reality. Keep it coming media. America is a great place to live. We don’t have anything to worry about except this kind of stuff.
