Overstock.com pulls name from Oakland Coliseum

Under the terms of a new lease, the Raiders will be paying a higher rent to play their home games in Oakland this season and they won’t be able to defray any of the costs from a naming rights deal with Overstock.com.

The company had that sponsorship, which named the building the O.co Coliseum, since 2011, but they have opted out of the final year of what was a six-year deal. Per the San Jose Mercury News, the deal called for the company to pay $7.2 million with half of the proceeds going to the Raiders and half split between the city and Alameda County.

“They’ve always been able to terminate the contract if they wanted,” Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority executive director Scott McKibben said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Like a lot of corporations, they sit back and look at their sponsorships and marketing efforts and came to the conclusion they wanted to go in another direction. They have been at this for five or six years.”

The Raiders saw their rent go from $925,000 to $3.5 million under the terms of the lease they signed this year. The lease includes options to remain in Oakland for two more years, although the Raiders continue to explore other possibilities in their search for a new stadium.

  1. Never understood what the value of stadium naming really is to a company. As a Giants fan, the fact Giant Staidum now has MetLife attached to it makes me dislike MetLife .

  2. I cannot understand keeping the team at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, which was state of the art when it opened in 1966. Vegas beacons and “the integrity of the game” (a joke then and an even bigger joke now) has given way to the almighty dollar. Just make money, baby!

  3. I don’t blame O.co pulling their name. Did it really benefit them at all anyway? That stadium is a dump and maybe they just don’t want their company’s name attached to it any longer. Sewer lines still backing up… dirt field first half of the year… 50 yard line seats on the Raiders side are about 25 yards back from the field… etc. And for all that, rent triples? O.co won’t be the only ones leaving that stadium soon.

  4. They’re dumb…. This year, they would have gotten more than their money’s worth. The Raiders and that stadium are going to be in a lot of the conversations this year

  5. Yeah, tying your company to a history of futility and shame probably isn’t worth what it was at the height of the recession when the deal was signed

  6. Having O.co added to our lexicon as a tag line for sewer backup probably wasn’t what they were looking for when they signed the deal

  7. I think Davis really wants to move the team to Vegas and isn’t going to take no for an answer. The Las Vegas Raiders sounds pretty good, you’ve got to admit that.

Speaking for myself, I’d absolutely go to an NFL game in Vegas if given a chance. That would be one seriously epic (and expensive) weekend!

  8. San Antonio; I agree with spiffy biff. I empathize with you, Raider fan. It recalls 22 years ago when Modell solicited bids from cities that would cover his gambling losses (sorry, debt obligations) in exchange for a once proud franchise.

  9. I live in the bay area and did not know the O.com was for Overstock. I thought it was Oracle, who has naming rights to the Coliseum where the Warriors play right next door. The O.com logo being in Oracle red did not help.

I am very anti-Oracle anyway due to working for a competitor.

  10. A few years ago I learned that O.co stood for Overstock.com – I laughed because my wife shops on Overstock.com.

    My wife hates football.

Why would they want to be sponsoring the worst team in the NFL.

Raiders are far from the worst team in the league. They have been re-claiming their salary cap and making good personnel decisions the last several years. Should be a playoff team within the next couple of years unless all this front office “where do we call home” stuff gets in the way.

We still refer to it as Giants Stadium.

  13. “Turd Ferguson Field at Waste Management Park” sounds pretty nice to this Chiefs fan!

  14. Seriously, name one positive thing Mark Davis has done for the raiders since being gifted the team by his daddy who didnt really care for him that much.

Marky hired 18-46 Reg Mckenzie who with that performance record, is radioactive to the rest of the league and unemployable. Mark has talked to how many cities about a relocation and how many bites? Mark is laughed at by all fellow owners except Jerry Jones. And given that the Raiders are serial, perennial losers every single year……..is it a big shock nobody wants naming rights? And of course last but not least, the city of Oakland totally hosed the Raiders on their 2016 lease forcing them to pay triple fair market value for the Outhouse??

    Go Mark go!

  15. How many names will this team have before they finally leave? Good lord they have been everything.

Why don’t they just call it The Oakland Alameda Liquid Plumber County Coliseum.

Due to all the crap they can’t flush down the toilets without it backing up starting with raider fan.

Do you think Mark cares about being “laughed at” by his fellow owners? You are laughed at by everyone that reads your posts but it doesn’t stop you.
