Belichick on sustained success: We’ve tried to be an outlier

Getty Images

The Patriots have been one of the league’s best teams for most of the last two decades, something that coach Bill Belichick attributes to the team’s ability to find players that have been overlooked by others.

While speaking at a Salesforce World Tour event, Belichick pointed to moves on both sides of the ball that have led to success on the field and touched off trends around the league that have forced the team to revise their plans and make their “way in areas that are less populated” to maintain their spot at the top of the standings.

“One of the things we’ve tried to do is be a little bit of an outlier in some respects,” Belichick said, via NESN.com. “When I came to the Patriots in 2000 as the head coach, we played a 3-4 defense, and we only had two teams in the NFL, us and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who played a 3-4. We had quite a bit of success, won three Super Bowls in four years, and by 2005, half the league was playing a 3-4 defense. So, when I came here trying to find a nose tackle like Ted Washington, it was easy because no one else wanted him. Five years later, if we were looking for a nose tackle, there were probably five other teams in the draft ahead of us. “We’ve kind of had to find different players, different schemes, whether it be tight end-based offenses or whether it be going from an odd to an even front defensively, whatever it happened to be, trying to find different ways to capitalize on the talent that’s available.”

Belichick added that all of the machinations don’t lead to anything if you don’t find the right players because teams “don’t win without great players” in the lineup. The Patriots’ success at being outliers has allowed them to turn up some of those players in unexpected places, something that’s been vital to sustaining a long winning run in the Belichick era.

  2. Nearly two decades of success and not a single “*” anywhere in the official record books.

  6. “Outlier”… A shame, he only missed the truth by the letters O-U-T…

  7. Bill Belichick has had sustained success with churning rosters in a salary cap era. He’s won multiple Super Bowls, is nearly *always* in the playoffs, and is able to innovate on offense and defense putting new schemes into place based upon personnel seemingly every season. And all the people that can’t stand someone being successful can do is call the guy a cheater.

I might not like the Patriots, but I sure do respect Belichick and his amazing football acumen.

  8. It sure gets boring when the haters post their pathetic little cheater comments every time PFT has a Pats’ story that reveals interesting nuggets on how New England has led the NFL in excellence for all these years.

  9. One of the things we’ve always tried to do is cheat the league, whether it’s taping defensive signals, deflating balls, bugging lock rooms and hotels and numerous other tactics.

And oh if I didn’t have Tom Shady I’d be coaching PennState.

ask the panthers, vikings, packers how that worked out for them.. remember, these guys were actually caught red handed doctoring their footballs. that actually happened, its a fact, not fiction.

  11. Ya know too bad all the haters just came out to bash the guy when in reality they and all teams across the league should be listening to him. Regardless of how feel about the Patriots the guy is and will always be one of the greatest to ever coach. If you actually take the time to listen to what he saying instead of covering your ears and repeatedly yelling “cheater” like a 5 year old does when they don’t want to hear something, you may actually learn a few things about the game.

  12. You have got to be the most gullible fans in the world to actually believe that the Patriots did nothing wrong in the accusations of taping other teams practices and tampering with balls.

There may not be any * in the record books, but the NFL and all other sports are only around because of the fans, and I guarantee more fans believe that the Patriots got caught cheating. No matter how many championships they win, no matter how many winning seasons they get, they will always be associated with cheating.

  13. These comments equating the Patriots sustained success to cheating are nothing more than enviousness and resentment. Funny isn’t it how all the other teams in the league attempt to follow the Patriots blueprint for success. As for the detractors…you hate us ’cause you ain’t us!

I guess you answered your own question about the trolls coming out. And how does a coach explaining the reason for adapting to a different defensive front make him full of himself. I’m just curious how you got that from what he said

  15. Let’s be honest and stop all the “but you had Brady” stuff. If you don’t find a great supporting cast and play to those strengths you get Peyton’s career in Indy – 1 SB victory in the rain over Rex Grossman. You have to be deliberately ignorant to say the Pats aren’t innovative.

    Agreed 100%

  19. Belichick had 2 SB rings before he knew Brady, Brady was an average QB in college before Belichick drafted him. So let’s not get carried away with who needed whom to be successful. Belichick was a success prior to Brady, but it’s really hard to argue vice versa.

  20. Admiring Belichick is like admiring a poker player who hides an ace up his sleeve. He might be super slick about it and he might get away with it but the bottom line is there would be no success without the cheating.

  21. Notice how sad some things are in America nowadays? For instance, a day doesn’t go by without some entitled college kids “demanding” some bizarre luxuries. Or the overly sensitive nature of everything that is said.

It now all makes sense that haters continue to make “cheater” comments. They just can’t handle the fact that the Pats have dominated for 15+ years, all due to hard work and a willingness to put football over fun (re: Reggie Wayne and Deangelo Williams). Instead of tipping their caps or trying to field better teams, haters just continue to throw out accusations and meaningless comments because that is the world we live in today. If you can’t win, it’s someone else’s fault. It’s really pathetic.

  22. If he is as good as he thinks he is, then why cheat? No only do you lose the respect you should have, you open the entire program to doubt that your success is due to any thing other than cheating.

Is he a good football coach is soon drowned out by the bigger question, Is he morally bankrupt?

By the way, the answer to both questions is “Yes”

  23. No team works harder than the Pats. Numerous former players that were on other teams before or after their time with the Pats have confirmed this.

Hard work, innovation and success used to be respected in this country. Now the politically correct, want everyone to get a participation trophy and nothing more, lazy, whining, self entitled crowd find the hard work and innovation somehow “cheating” because they are either incapable and or to lazy to do so themselves.

The corruption and stupidity of Goodell’s league office is incredible. They are the cheaters, not the Pats. They have lied about every major “scandal” they have manufactured against the Saints, Cowboys, Washington and Miami, and at the same time caught red handed lying about the Ray Rice incident in an attempt to cover it up.

  24. Steelers fans kissing the patriots rings is worse than watching the packers wasting two hall o fame qb’s careers!!
Steelers will be lucky to win 5 games anyway

  25. Don’t care about Patsies, Saints, Dallas, or Redskins. All teams that the NFL has punished the past decade.

    Let’s look at the facts:

Which team only won two Super Bowls by making under the table side deals with three players under the to circumvent the salary cap (thank God Mr. Davis reported it to the NFL)?

Which team had it’s SB MVP get caught bribing the NFL PED urine tester?

Which team had it’s SB QB get caught receiving HGH shipments?

Which team (admittedly) placed assistants in the stands with binoculars to spy on other team’s in game calls?

Which team got caught in 2010 videotaping another team’s walkthrough?

Which team has been at the top of the PED suspension list since the past decade plus?

Which team was caught putting vaseline on the players arms and uniforms to prevent the opposing team from grabbing them?

Sorry kids, look it up. Fact, not opinion.

PS – for those who dispute the salary cap cheating scandal, they were docked two top draft picks and received the largest fine in NFL history. Sorry, truth hurts.

  27. Put down the hate and think for once, what coach would you want if you could pick any of the 32? Tomlin? Rex? Fisher? Belichick has been around football his whole life from helping his father with scouting film at Navy to helping the Giants win there 86 and 90 SBs to all he has done in New England. Hands down the best football mind of our time. And if you wouldn’t want him as your coach your either lying or a compleat dope.

  28. Can’t wait to see how BB manipulates the draft this year…. With 11 picks you know he’s going to move some into next year…
Of the 11 only 4 can’t be traded due to them being compensatory picks…
& by setting up all these former 1 at round picks from past drafts on 1 year contracts he’s already setting the team up for a bunch of future compensatory picks that CAN be traded…. Man, BB is the GRAND MASTER of chess while other teams coaches play checkers!!!

  29. I wonder how much these genius ideas would have worked out if Tom Brady wasnt around?

  30. For the first 25 plus years I followed this team they were the laughing stock of the NFL….Raymond Berry gave them a pulse…Parcells and Bledsoe gave us hope and little mocksy…..Brady and Belichick have given us excellence…..we are truly hated which justifies our greatness……….carry on……….

Ever notice any time they play a good team it always seems to be in NE….after a pats bye…..when the other team is coming off a tough game the week before?

  35. It’s been over 20 years and it all started with Kraft buying the team. 2 losing seasons in the last 22 years and the pats first SB apperiance during that period didn’t have belichick as head coach and Brady was still in high school

I’d suggest taking a look at the 2008 season for that one. Brady went down in game one with a torn ACL and the team went on to win 11 games and narrowly miss the playoffs. Brady is good, but it takes an entire roster to win football games. Just ask Andrew luck.

  47. FWIW – Great coach/Quarterback Combos:

    Vince Lombardi – Bart Starr
    Chuck Knoll – Terry Bradshaw
    Bill Walsh – Joe Montana
    Bill Belichick – Tom Brady

How many championships did these coaches win without their star quarterbacks? Answer none.

The only great coaches to win Super Bowls with multiple starting quarter backs are Don Shula and Joe Gibbs. Gibbs did it with Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien. Don Shula did it with Bob Griese and a back up when the Dolphins beat Washington to complete their perfect season.

For the most part quarterback and head coach must complement each other for each to be considered great.

I just don’t want to wait until he retires before he writes his definitive book on how to manage people and circumstances. No team is “spoonfed” their schedule.

  52. How easy it is to find something negative to say when you don’t bother reading the whole story let alone the background information.
Belichick makes it clear that even with a good plan or excellent staff, nothing works without having the best players. And attitude is as important as skill in his definition of best. So yeah, Brady fits in to that category. And Belichick doesn’t deny that. Why is that so difficult to see?

  53. as a cowboys fan, I have to admit the patriots have to be the best sports franchise in the last 15 years….it is laughable to see the cheating comments on this thread…I’ll bet each one of those commenters are on teams that are losers…the boys used to be hated once, when they were winning, i’ll take being hated again if they can perform like the patriots have.

It’s better that that. Totalling all gms since 2003, near the beginning of the Brady/BB run, the AFC East has the best winning % in the NFL outside their division. A Jags fan commenting on weak divisions is hysterical. The Pats winning % differential in and out of division is .009. NE lost 4 games each of the last 2 seasons and in both they had 2 division losses. Even taking division winners out of the mix the AFCE is the 3rd winningest division in football over the last 15 years. The 2 weakest were the AFCS followed by the NFCW.

They have played at least 2 away games back to back every year for the last 5.

Nothing shows up a poser faster than whining about schedules over time, every team is subject to the same scheduling rules. NE, subject to the that formula, plays on the West Coast as often as the schedule rules dictate. Yes, that meant the furthest west they went last year was Denver (where they will have to go again this year btw) but do you think they wouldn’t rather have played SD in SD? Six of the last 10 years they have faced one of the 3 weakest teams on their schedule coming off the bye but had to face winning opponents coming off byes in 7 of the last 10.

  74. Cut and paste king, show me one lie I’ve ever told on this site. Ever. I’ll check back later. Take your time.

Resorting to insults as you get exposed as a tool. Teddy you said you never said you would walk out on an audience with Obama if he made Cheaties jokes, you said you would take your box seat tickets and throw them in Krafts face, and you said women need to be put in “their” place now and then. Those are a couple of quick ones but there are many more. Teddy when you tell the truth and you don’t have to worry about remembering.

  75. 1. Yes, I said I would walk out on Obama if I was on the team when at the White House ceremony. Just like Belichick stuck a big thumbs down in the President’s face. And I voted for him. Stand by that.

    2. I have club seats, not box seats. Never said I would rip them up, but called Kraft a coward for accepting the ‘deflategate’ punishment. Stand by that, too.

    3. NEVER,EVER, said that about women. In any conversation. That’s why I take steeler fans to task for defending BB, because to them it’s about being able to wave a yellow snot towel.

    No lies. Try again.

  76. Teddy your nose just grew five inches. Couldn’t resist a childish insult at the end? I guess you are getting mad Teddy ….! Bet your pants are on fire. If you were innocent you would ignore me but you can’t because you know you love to lie.

I haven’t stalked like this since my college GF. droolie, is your real name Holly?

Yes my middle name is Holly. Is your middle name Pinnochio?

Teddy you are “the ” typical Pats fan so easy to laugh at… Frequent lies misrepresentation and denials followed by a big dose of childish insults. The team has been as good as the fans have been ignorant ang arrogant… And fun to laugh at.

    The Cheaties are a joke.

Isn’t it funny how you call them a “joke” but they OWN the team you root for?

Belichick is nothing without Brady. Look at his record with the Browns.

    Nuff said

    ^^^^

The last time the Browns won a playoff game BB was the coach, Vinny Testaverde was the QB. 1994.

  79. Ignoring someone isn’t as much fun as making a fool outta them. You can get ignored at home. Guess my nose=your…Never mind, that’s what Trump would say

  80. When Bill retires they are going to rename the Coach of The Year award, the “Belichick Trophy”.

The guy’s not perfect, but he’s still the Best Ever.

  81. When u have a QB that has all the intangibles along with a ton of talent you tend to win a lot!. Every single NFL team would kill for th chance to have TB for a couple seasons and every team cheats in some manner every single year!

“The fact that people think the pats cheat to win is a testimony to thier success. ”

Or maybe people think that because the Patriots have been caught cheating multiple times and were exposed being cheaters by Sports Illustrated and ESPN. It’s actually foolish to even imply that the Patriots don’t cheat.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!
    You actually believe BSPN?

This comment gets the biggest homer post of the day award, thank you for that laughable statement.

  83. Teddy you and Trump both lie like Persian rugs, insult people instead of answering their questions and have a superficial grasp of the facts but can’t go in depth on anything unless it’s hurling insults.

  84. Answered your questions. Still waiting for the lies. You got nothing. All my facts are just that. You have none. Sorry your feelings are hurt. Go feed the cats, you’ll feel better.

You gave you version of the lies you are trying cover up. Why else would you even reply if you knew you weren’t lying? Why bother? Your guilt is as obvious as your lies…. Typical Pats fan …. No ethics. Cheers to the Cheaties Teddy be ever proud of their tainted legacy.

  86. Lose an argument, call someone a liar, with nothing to back it up. With the facts plain as day. The argument of a child.

  87. How many reports from legit media and comments by elite NFL alumni (Aikman, Sharpe, Shula, Faulk,, Saap, Rice, Warner, etc…) confirming the Patriots cheating have to be made before Pats fans accept the reality that their team is serial cheaters?

  88. The funny thing about Pats fans bashing ESPN is that for over a decade they were the biggest Pats homers of them all. They built them up to be legends lol then the eventually had to stop lying because fans everywhere knew all along NE cheated for everything they earned.

Lose an argument, call someone a liar, with nothing to back it up. With the facts plain as day. The argument of a child.

Your version of a story is not a fact , but a liar presenting his denials and would hardly be called a win. Insulting comments is attacking a source not its credibility , but that is what a child does Teddy. When you are exposed or mere opposed you turn to Trumping … Not telling the truth…. A very Eastern elite reaction. But you are hardly elite unless being a Doritos munching couch potato counts as elite.

I think Kraft’s statement needs to be parsed a little more carefully:

“We’re part of a system and we’ll follow the rules, and it’s our hope that opening game here, we’ll have the privilege of having everyone who deserves to be on the field starting that game.

Kraft capitulated to the league like the greedy coward that he is. He should have fought. He should of fought ‘spygate’ too. He now has a legacy that, right or wrong, is tainted in many peoples eyes. It’s OK though. He still has his 1.5 bil franchise that he paid 175 mil for.

Instead, he threw Brady, alone, under the bus. ‘I believe Tommy’. Yeah, right. In saying ‘everyone who deserves to be on the field’, maybe he believes Brady doesn’t. Maybe that’s what he feels Goodell and the other owners want to hear. Despicable. I understand Kraft did save the franchise, but I’d give up my club seats if I thought it would make a difference. The next guy on the list would just take them.

Guess one guy is a liar, and one guy isn’t.

Brady had it right, blowing it off. I would of walked out of there. Thanks again to Wells for taking a stupid amount of time to exonerate the Patriots. I hope Kraft sues.

    I rest my case.

  92. How many different screenames are you gonna try to bait people with? You must keep a spreadsheet to keep track of them all.

Not you droolie. I KNOW you’re all alone.

  93. Classic Pats fan tactic, make up some conspiracy theory to deflect away from the subject. You’re all just emotionally immature spoiled brats. Why don’t you answer my question? The consensus is the Patriots are cheaters, they’ve been caught, and they’ve been exposed, how long will you continue to lie to yourself?

  94. Yes, I’ve noticed it as well… It DOES seem to ALL be about the same thing….ENVY & JEALOUSY…..
That’s just fine by me…. LOVE IT actually!!

  95. Teddy anybody can type on here what they want is it in context is it factual is it consistent with the original lie? For someone so determine to prove his innocence must be hiding something? You lie so often you must be unsure if you did or didn’t. But glad I made you fill up your busy social schedule on a otherwise quiet fri night for a troll.

I’ll give one thing to you Teddy you are a very determined liar.

  96. Don’t set those cheat sheets too close to the ball warmer you guys were seen using on national TV!!!

Two reason for sustainability – Brady and AFC EAST, not necessary in that order.

    ————————-

I agree on the first, but you can say that about any team who has had a great QB (SF with Monatana and Young, Indy with Manning, Packers with Favre and Rodgers, etc). The second part is a false. The Patriots actually have a better record outside the division since 2001 than they do within the division. Who was the Colts’ division rival all these years? Jacksonville? Houston? Tennessee? How about the old 49ers of the 80s consistently playing crappy Atlanta and New Orleans’ teams? Didn’t the Jets make it to two AFCCGs? How many AFCCGs did the Jags, Titans, and Texans make it to? Or the Saints, Falcons, and Rams back in the day? No one mentions those teams’ division futility. Just sayin.

  98. If Bob Kraft was to offer Bill Belichick and Tom Brady in a trade for your favorite teams head coach and starting QB, would you make the trade? You also would have them for the next three years at the level they are currently coaching and playing at.

  99. How many reports from legit media and comments by elite NFL alumni (Aikman, Sharpe, Shula, Faulk,, Saap, Rice, Warner, etc…) confirming the Patriots cheating have to be made before Pats fans accept the reality that their team is serial cheaters?

    ————-

All you have to do is look at this list and know it’s illegitimate. Not only can’t they “confirm” anything at all, but they are more biased than even the most pathetic troll.

There have been many, many more “reports” (as you call them) from NFL alumni supporting the Patriots legitimate dominance and why that has occurred. Stop wishing so hard for fictitious explanations to aid your sad cause.

  100. No fool no drool no truth no class no clue. Nuff said. What next, more trailer trash? Bring it on simpleton.

  101. Bill and Tom may each be considered GOAT when all is said and done, they have some tough competition though

    Lance Armstrong
    Barry Bonds
    Alex Rodriguez
    Roger Clemens
    Mark McGwire

That is some rarefied air right there, they should feel honored just to be mentioned with those guys

  102. Equating steroid use to filming in the wrong location and ball deflation pretty much sums the over-reactionary nature to the Patriots perennial cheating claims. Well done.

    Clap Clap Clap

  103. Cheaters who play in a weak division, and only won the last Super Bowl because the Seahawks coach called a dumb play. Most over rated team ever.

  104. The sad thing is we would of all allowed our teams to do the exact same things he did to get the success he has gotten.
