Eagles reportedly have hearts set on Carson Wentz

It’s been made sufficiently clear that Eagles owner Jeff Lurie wants a franchise quarterback, as he’s dragged around with his coaches and personnel staff interviewing the top prospects.

According to one report, he may have settled on one, which leaves only the small problem of getting to him.

During an interview on 97.5 the Fanatic, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said the Eagles’ preference is North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, who might not be available when they pick eighth overall.

“Make no mistake about it, I still think the Eagles first and foremost are trying to find a way to get Carson Wentz,” Zierlein said, via NJ.com. “I know Doug Pederson loves him. I know that from people behind the scenes, in the know. That’s who he wants and that’s who he likes. It’s just going to be tough.”

Of course, if the Eagles wanted to make sure they got him, they could make a deal with the Titans, who are openly auctioning the top pick. Otherwise, it might hard to imagine Wentz being there, with the quarterback needy Browns (second overall) and 49ers (seventh) in front of them, along with the needing-an-eventual-replacement Chargers (third) and Cowboys (fourth) creating a traffic jam.

And there’s the small matter of the $34 million in guaranteed money they’ve thrown at free agents Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel this offseason, something which doesn’t seem to complicate Lurie’s pursuit of a new one.

  1. Aint gonna happen!!

Too many teams ahead of them

Not everyone gets the pretty girl

  2. Never happen. To get to #1 the Eagles would have to sell the farm. By winning 7-10 games a year you will never be able to draft a top QB. You always end up in the middle of the draft. Now, if they were able to do what their friends over at the Wells Fargo Center has done for the past three years, than there’s hope. Tanking, anyone?

  3. Reports indicate the Eagles were impressed with Chris Hackenberg. This guy won’t draw the spotlight and he will be there at #8 or even lower and his cost will also be lower. He is going to be a presence in the NFL for some team ……. .. or not ..

  4. Probably true, but it could be a smokescreen to get the 49ers to waste some picks to move up.

    Anything is possible with Howie.

  5. Where is the reporting on Pederson having an affair with his secretary in KC, and Reid & him lying about Pederson calling plays?

  6. Please keep Jeffrey out of it, we’re still trying to recover from “The Gold Standard” comment.

  7. So the top qb prospect, the most important player arguably on a team, is a guy from ND state. Qbs must be terrible this year.

  8. Nothing about this is complicated – just trade Bradford and his contract on/after draft day. There are enough QB desperate teams out there for this to happen.

  9. The Eagles only need to look in their division to see the folly of trading away multiple draft picks to move to the top to get a QB. The Redskins are still hurting from that strategy.

  10. PFT’s first mistake is citing a report from Eliot Shorr-Parks. The guy is known as the sad sack among the Philly sports media and has no credibility in the Delaware Valley. He also has no sources.

  11. It would cost them way too much, at least next years first and more. Goff has looked good and Paxton Lynch put on one hell of a show at his pro day, just draft one of those guys instead.

  12. Remember when the Eagles were going to trade up to get Mariota last year making the Eagles an unstoppable juggernaut?
Turned out to be the 50th time in a row the Lombardi went somewhere other than Philly.

  13. The Eagles should wait on the Browns and if they don’t take Wentz with #2, they should trade up with the Ravens for #6. They can probably get away with a second and maybe a 6th or 7th. That would be OK with Ozzie because if the Browns take Goff and the Eagles use the pick on Wentz, one of the defensive players the Ravens covet will be there at #8.

  14. Mortgage the future, give up 3 #1s.
Then have Wenz turn out to be a Tier 2 QB, a little better than Bradford.

Trade Bradford to Denver, where he can be a solid Tier 2 QB and have some success.

  15. No one is falling for this Eagles – Marcus Mariota trick again…

  16. The Eagles are in shambles with Lurie and the damage the Chipper did. Even the Browns, Niners and Dolphins are in better shape…LOL

  17. Why not just wait at 8 for Lynch? Same size, same arm talent as Wentz, maybe not quite as polished but especially after his Pro Day I don’t think there’s any argument the tools are all there.

  18. Don’t be that guy who trades away his entire draft for the one guy he absolutely has to have (see Ditka, Mike).

or 3 1sts (see Washington Redskins).

If he falls to you, fine, otherwise move on.

  19. Misinformation season is always fun. It seems convenient that the team drafting 8th “really wants” a player likely to go in the top 5, when their divisional opponent also happens to need a QB and is rumored to be taking their chances later in the draft.

It sounds like the Eagles are trying to call the Cowboys bluff and get Dallas to waste resources by moving up from the 4 spot.

But it is misinformation season. This is all wild speculation. Which is really all any reports are regarding interest in draft picks right now.

  20. I will be pissed if they do something like trade Fletcher Cox to get up to 1 or 2.

  21. .
The trade value chart shows the first pick to be worth 3000 pts. The eighth pick is worth 1400. Any trade the Eagles make, would almost certainly involve dealing next year’s #1 which is always a risky proposition.

Flipping Bradford elsewhere could help, but the cap charges may be prohibited.
    .

  22. Trade DJax, McCoy, DeMarco, Alonso and Chip Kelly for the #1 pick…just don’t tell the Titans they’ve already been jettisoned.

  23. Big brains there in Philly dontcha know. Hand out 35 million in guaranteed money to veteran QBs for one season and then turn around and give up two first rounders plus more for a Division III rookie QB. Stupid is as stupid does.

Doug Pederson comes across like a guy in way over his head. Your Eagles are going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL for a long, long time Philly fans. Get ready to become the new Cleveland Browns.

Jim Schwartz is the talent there. He’ll bolt to a new head coaching job in 2017.

  24. Weird that they want a QB round 1 when they gave that much money to Bradford. Who is not going to be easy to trade, what QB needy team is going to give up an asset for Bradford’s contract? Denver can’t afford it. Is Miami going to move on from Tannehill? St. Louis isn’t taking him back. I can’t believe the Niners are going to try and build their franchise around Bradford.

Better for the Eagles at this point to build a team around their two QBs.

  25. yess Philly trade the farm too Cleveland we move down too 7-8
    get 1-2 number 1s
and 2 maybe even squeeze a 3 outta them too
we end up saving $$ get lynch or etc and even have the option too flip 1 of those number 1s they give for picks in this draft
    possibilities are endless

  26. There was no “35 million in guaranteed” money haded out and both QB contracts are basically one year deals. That being said this is a smokescreen to get who the Eagles really want.

I know how anxious you are to bash the Eagles, but could you wait until they at least do that before you kill them for it?

  28. Assuming Connor Cook’s shoulder is healthy, he is going to be the QB steal of this draft.

  29. Gonna take a ton to get that guy because you will have to move to 1 or 2 to do it.

Teams love Wentz and Goff a lot more than the are letting on.

Those two will go first and second.

The interesting pick is #3– Will the Chargers pick Tunsil or a defender or trade out??

  30. What a shocker! They have interest in another player who is projected to go in the top 10!

How is this even a story? So far they’ve had “reported” interest in Conklin, Goff, Hargreaves, Elliot, Stanley, Wentz and Jack. I may be missing a few. Anyone who knows anything about the Eagles knows they can’t trade up that far to get Wentz. They don’t have the trade resources that other QB needy teams have. And please stop throwing Fletcher Cox’s name out there as trade bait! Think about it logically for a second….What team is going to trade for a player who’s playing in the final year of his contract before he’s about to break the bank?

  31. Its not a difficult deal to make, it will be a difficult deal to swallow though.

1.1 for 1.8, 3.77, 7.233, 2017 1st, 2017 4th. All for your Franchise QB. Considering the Eagles don’t have a 2nd round pick this year(Bradford trade), you would be emptying the piggy bank. But its likely less than they would have paid for Mariota last year.

The Eagles are certainly in an unenviable position. If they pull the trigger, you grab your QB(who can sit behind Bradford for a year(but likely a week or so when Bradford goes down)) and left with a gutted roster of the recently deposed Mad King.

Honestly, you have to let the draft come to you, you are better off just letting this season play out the way it is destined and grab DeShawn Watson next year.

  32. Just for the people ripping Wentz for coming from North Dakota… it’s not always the 5-star blue chippers who become the best QB’s. Just look what happened to Hackenberg (though I think he could work in the right situation). Romo came from Eastern Illinois. Roethlisberger came from Miami of Ohio. Bortles came from UCF. Carr from Fresno State. Cutler from Vandy. These are not powerhouses we’re talking about. Individual skillset is more important than competition. Would it be better if he was coming from OSU or Bama? Yeah but it’s not the end of the world.

  33. The Titans should trade Mariota to the Eagles and then draft Wentz. Wentz will be much better in the long run.

“Those two will go first and second.”

Think before posting… NO WAY the Titans pick a QB! They just used last years 2nd pick on Mariota! DOH! They’ll pick OL or DL.

  35. Cleveland will take Wentz at 2. Hue Jackson isn’t stupid. The Titans are the Eagles only shot to get him and they will want more than the Eagles have to give.

I bet Dallas moves up to 1 to take him ahead of Cleveland. Titans move to 4 and trade that again for someone who wants to get Goff.

Titans walk away with a lot of picks in this draft and next from both trades.

It’s easier to sell a team when you already have a franchise quarterback and a sh!t ton of picks.

  36. The Harvard Geniuses in Cleveland are playing “moneyball” with the MLB guy. I expect them to move down to the middle of the pack, and pick up additional lower round picks. They will try to replace their pro-bowlers with picks in rounds 4-7. Browns seem like the softest target to trade with.

Remember, Truckstop Jimmy should be going to jail, and the owner, Dee Haslam, wants to redo the mansion back in the hills of Tenn.

Browns are the Indians of the NFL…cheap!

  37. Maybe they shouldn’t have won the final game of the season then. It was a meaningless game that dropped us down 5-6 picks in the process.

  38. This is old news that happened early in the week, the Eagles don’t have the ammo unless they’re willing to let go of cox which on some levels might make sense if they don’t want to tie up as much money on the DT position as they’ll have to when it’s time to resign him

  39. If they really want him, I don’t think they even need to get to Number 1…Send their first and second to Cleveland with a player or a future pick and I think the Browns would be stupid not to trade back…they have too many needs. Even if Wentz and Goff are gone by the 8th pick.

    Truth…

  41. “the Eagles don’t have the ammo unless they’re willing to let go of cox which on some levels might make sense if they don’t want to tie up as much money on the DT position as they’ll have to when it’s time to resign him”

But if they can get the Browns to accept Sam Bradford and their #8 pick for the Browns’ #2 pick, the Eagles would save enough money on Bradford to pay Fletcher Cox. Hell, the Eagles can even throw in another draft pick if necessary, if they’re so hell bent on getting Carson Wentz.

  42. If he is still there at 3 the Chargers will use that as an opportunity to trade down. I think there are several teams that will be looking to move up to that spot for a number of players… once Titans and Browns are off the board. What do the Eagles have to offer … let the bidding begin …and we are not interested in Bradford.

  43. If this is true, and it could be smoke from Howie’s exhaust I’d offer that MY EAGLES can sit tight. Draft day will come and I see Browns fixing a problem other than QB, the CHARGERS got too many things wrong and a replacement is not smart @ 3, the BOYS are a wild card but I believe they go DEFENSE.

Now here is where HOWIE GETS WOOD. He can jump from 8 to 6 by doing a deal with his buds down in RAVENVILLE. The BIRDS get WENTZ and “F-CHIP” who goes at 7. WIN. WIN. INSERT BLADE AND TWIST. SMUG PRESS CONFERENCE.

    100% MAN

The NFL is not MLB… rules prevent teams from being cheap. The Browns have many warts but spending money unfortunately isn’t one of them.

Nice try though with all the Browns bashing cliche’s. Original thoughts are welcome…
