Packers release Nate Palmer

The Packers won’t be bringing linebacker Nate Palmer back for a fourth season with the club.

The team announced Friday that they have released Palmer, who joined the team as a sixth-round pick in the 2013 draft.

Palmer started 10 games at inside linebacker last season before giving way to Jake Ryan down the stretch and in the playoffs. He ended the year with 68 tackles and a sack.

Palmer missed the entire 2014 season after tearing his MCL during the preseason and played in eight games for Green Bay during his rookie season.

The Packers used Clay Matthews at inside linebacker last year, but plan to kick him back outside in 2016. Ryan, Sam Barrington, Carl Bradford and Joe Thomas are in-house options at the position, although the Packers may add others in the draft.

  1. Before the inevitable “Vikings will sign him” comments, please know that the Packers have the worst linebacking corps in all of football, including the high school level. Clay Matthews is the only linebacker who could make the Vikings’ roster, but they would never sign him because Alex Boone would beat him up in practice every day.

  2. Jake Ryan may be the slowest human being I’ve ever seen, but still was always there to make the tackle. You can’t teach that kind of instinct.

You really think that? Are you sure you want to say that out loud?

  4. I agree the Vikings have a better linebacking crew, but with a 3-and-out, 5 yd. “bomb” offense, they need it.

  5. PFT forgot to add this: …… “who will soon be signed by the Minnesota Vikings”…..
    The Vikings love Packers rejects.

And before Vikings fan start zinging me, I will ask one question: how many Championships have the Vikings won again?

    Heh heh heh……

  6. Whenever someone talks about the Packers LBs, it doesn’t take long for Jake Ryan to get brought up.

It has to be some sort of record for a Rookie drafted about 130th overall, who is learning the pro game and expected to be used in emergency, to get talked about as much as he has.

  7. I can answer that for you, nyneal since it is my favorite sports trivia question.

The Minnesota Vikings have won zero Championships.

    However, their linebackers are outstanding!

  8. Packer keep living in past !OK how did you do last year ? future is not great either

  9. All the inside linebackers for the are JAG or less.

I thought why not move some outside linebackers to the middle.

Then I read that Ask Vic article about this and he said that outside linebackers are to long.

But Perry and Neal seem to me like they have the body type to fit the inside. I don’t know but it seems to me that Ted is wasting A-rod time being to stubborn fix a glaring hole.

Fire Ted and we would win a Superbowl the next year.

    Go Pack Go

  10. But, but, but, but, but, but, but, packer fans were saying that Nate was going to take the league by storm this year and have 15 sacks by week 8! Ready to eat crow?

I always felt that you were one of the few respectable Viking commentator’s on this sight, but with your “high school” reference, I see you’ve sunk to the level of just another Viks troll.

  12. Surprised they released him quite honestly. He isn’t very good, but neither is Bradford.. And Thomas is strictly a nickel or dime LB. Ted must think he can get someone in the first couple of rounds of the draft. It’d be nice if Ragland was there, but it’s hard to believe he will be.

  13. But but but ariani/cody, show me one Packer post that said anything like that!!!!!

Sites like Bleacher report ranked the Packers LB Corp at 20 out of 32. They are bad but at least they arent in dead last.

Vikings were ranked 12th. Just so you know.

  15. Someone asked why Jake Ryan takes so much heat? That someone must not follow the Packers. Jake Ryan is the new AJ Hawk. A linebacker from the Big 10 not good enough to be an NFL starter but will be because the Packers GM was a former try hard not good enough LB/ST guy in the NFL.

AJ Hawk was worthy of every bit of the heat he took and Jake better get used to it. At least Jake can claim he wasn’t a 5th overall so the fans shouldn’t go too hard on him.

Ironically, Jake Ryan was Bill Polian’s favorite player in the draft.

  16. I’ve no idea how good Barrington is but they really, really need some speed at ILB. Ryan is similar to Hawk, smart and can tackle but not exactly a sideline to sideline terror and a little anxiety inducing in pass coverage. I don’t know how good Ragland is – was he a product of those two DL’s in front of him, maybe, maybe not but recent history has shown that the top ILB goes well before GB’s 27 or 28 pick so I wouldn’t hold my breath for Ragland.

  17. In other news. Packers CB Demetri Goodson was suspended 4 games for HGH use .
He must have been at Mike Neals house when Peytons dealer spent 3 weeks in Green Bay WI last summer.

  18. I will admit, Nate Palmer really digressed over the course of last season to the point where the Packers had to cut him and he might have fallen so far that the Viking’s aren’t even interested. That’s a historic decline in play if there ever was one.

But its difficult to say the Viking linebackers are better since the Packers won more playoff games in the last two years than the Vikings have won in the last decade. Maybe that’s cherry picking stats since the Vikings are as bad at winning playoff games as Nate Palmer is at line backing since both are historically bad but Nate Palmer has one distinct advantage, he hasn’t been bad for 54 straight years.

Hey, just a question, how does crow taste? I’m asking you because you should know, you and so many other Vikings fans lay claim to the Superbowl at the end of pretty much every offseason…

  20. Given a team is allowed what, 90 guys at the start of camp and that keeping him into camp to see what he has doesn’t hurt anything – Ted must have something cooking where he needed the space.

  21. Jake ryan what a joke..anyone who saw him play at michigan saw he lacked lateral speed and often was out of plays due to closing ability.

  22. It blows my mind that Viking fans don’t understand that they haven’t won anything for 50 years. I mean the last time you were close, a Packer great was your QB. Your team sucks, has sucked and will suck.

  23. Ryan can be a solid inside “thump” linebacker and very solid if they can procure a solid inside “chase” linebacker to play alongside him. Peppers and Matthews on the outside is about as solid as a duo can be.

This will be the big year for TeddyPonderJackWater and his ranking of 23rd. Without drastic improvement, he’ll be just another bust and the same old infighting will commence, culminating in Teddy on the bench and the mighty Zim unemployed. In other words: Business as usual in purple purgatory.

Its not a claim that he wasn’t Fifth Overall pick, its a FACT. Another fact is that AJ Hawk was one of the top 2 Pro-Ready players in that draft the other being D-Brick. The other thing well known about him, was he didn’t have much upside.

I can’t pretend Ryan, is as good of an athlete as Barr, Kendricks or EVEN Hawk for that matter, He isn’t going to be a play maker with 10 Sacks or 10 INTs a season, but no one has ever said he would. If he can be like Hawk and have around 100 tackles each season, be available every week, and do his job in the defensive scheme. He can have a solid career.

  25. Amazing how fans of a team that has been absolutely owned by the Packers this past decade are incapable of seeing a Packers story and trolling with rude uninformed comments.

Get a new shtick. Every offseason, they boast about how great they look on paper and every January (or more commonly, every November), they’re talking about how next year will be better and then settle in to r0ot against the Packers as their team is no longer playing meaningful games.

  26. It’s kind of remarkable how the cheeseheads remember championships of years long ago, but nobody brings up the late 60’s, all of the 70’s & 80’s. Let’s hear about it.

  27. Ariani, why do you bother with the codythao alias? You post the exact same way under both guises and don’t even make and effort to hide the fact your the same guy. What’s the point? It’s not like we know who ariani is (other than being a very immature 12-15 year old) so why not do all your trolling under the one umbrella?

  28. What I can’t understand is how all these Queens fans come on this site on a daily basis and continually talk trash? The Packers have owned your team. Your mediocre team has never won anything important, and probably never will. I guess jealousy makes people do and say dumb things.

  29. I love how questions such as “I can’t believe how much the Vikings fans are talking…in the past we have beat them…”

What…Viking fans are supposed to be silent because of what happened in the past?

Keyword, past. Vikings fans live in the present unlike the little sisters to the east.

The Vikings have turned the tide, retaken the North, and have a better outlook in the future than the packers.

But please…keep looking back at yesterday because surely that will have an impact on today and tomorrow. If you feel comfort living in the past the by all means, keep living there.
