Teammate thought Calvin Johnson retirement talk was a joke

Calvin Johnson told at least one Lions teammate last season that he was planning to retire, but that teammate didn’t believe it.

Lions receiver Corey Fuller says Johnson talked to him early in the 2015 season about retiring, which Johnson officially did after the season ended. But Fuller didn’t believe Johnson was serious about it.

“Every time he mentioned it to me, I kind of took it as a joke,” Fuller told MLive.com. “Like, ‘Yeah, whatever. No you’re not.’ It wasn’t until close the end of the season, when he said it — he said it like two or three times — like, ‘Are you for real?’ Then after the season, when it came out, it was for real.”

Fuller says he’s going to miss Johnson, not only on the field but also in the locker room.

“It still hasn’t hit me all the way yet,” Fuller said. “I’m definitely going to miss him. Miss the jokes. Miss his presence.”

That’s how Lions fans feel. There’s nothing funny about one of the greatest players in franchise history walking away.

  1. It would have been painful to watch two more years of declining skills. Smart move Calvin. Tell cuz Andre Johnson to join you poolside.

  2. It would have been nice to see him in a Patriots uniform, but would probably be a waste with Tom’s arm getting weaker every year. Older quarterbacks go down hill so fast.
Tom was looking so bad last season and this year might be even worse. We are one the oldest teams now, trying to fill the roster with other teams castoffs

lol. nice try troll. we have one of the youngest teams in the nfl average age wise, and yea brady was awful last year. had less than a second to throw in afccg yet still almost pulled it out. do people actually believe what they type?

  4. Nice try gem.

Up until the injuries hit Brady and the Patriots were on a record breaking pace.

Wish Calvin the best. It’s the Lion’s that wasted that great talent.

  5. “I thought it was a joke! I even wrote it down in diary, ‘Megatron made a funny joke today.’ I laughed at it later that night!”

Did you even watch football last year?! “Tom looked so bad last season”? What the hell are you talking about. He lead the NFL in TD passes, finished 3rd in passing yards and was a runner up for MVP. Are we even talking about the same Tom?

  7. He made more than enough money, holds an engineering degree from a reputable organization and avoided serious injuries…he’s the exception and more power to him for it!

  8. His poor ankles must be hell at 30 years old. I don’t think many of you guys appreciate the beating on the body that these gentlemen take for our entertainment. I’m almost 34 and in reasonable health and still have ailments from youth-highschool football. Never playing with guys as big and strong as fast as these, I can’t even imagine.

Kudos to him for walking away while there’s still some hits left in him. I don’t think that many of us have that kind of fortitude to walk away in the face of all of that money on the table.

I wish him the best in any endeavor he decides to take part in his life after-football.

  10. “There’s nothing funny about one of the greatest players in franchise history walking away.” True, but there is something very familiar about it happening to this franchise.

36 TD, 7 Int, 4,700+ yards. If that is Tom looking bad all season I would shudder to think what a good season would look like.

  12. The Lions are the most pathetic and embarrassing team the NFL. So glad Calvin doesn’t have to suffer anymore on that dumpster fire team in Detroit!
