The quarterback depth charts for the Saints and Jets have a big difference on the top with Drew Brees still in New Orleans and the Jets still working toward a deal that would bring Ryan Fitzpatrick back for a second season with the team.
That difference is a big one, but both teams are showing a shared interest in doing their homework on the top draft prospects at the position. Michael Silver of NFL Media reports that both teams are scheduled to visit with Cal quarterback Jared Goff this week.
Just as Brees’ presence hasn’t stopped the Saints from checking out the quarterbacks entering the league this year, re-signing Fitzpatrick probably wouldn’t take the Jets out of the quarterback market. Even if Fitzpatrick secures the job for 2016, the Jets would have a need to develop a quarterback for the long term and their work this offseason suggests that they aren’t sold on Geno Smith or Bryce Petty for that role. The same could be said of the Saints and 2015 third-round pick Garrett Grayson.
Getting Goff might require a trade up the draft board for either team, however. Goff’s also slated to meet with the Eagles and 49ers this week, both of whom pick ahead of the Saints and Jets, and there’s been no shortage of other teams on the radar as potential landing spots for one of the draft’s top quarterbacks.
