Jets, Saints slated to meet with Jared Goff

The quarterback depth charts for the Saints and Jets have a big difference on the top with Drew Brees still in New Orleans and the Jets still working toward a deal that would bring Ryan Fitzpatrick back for a second season with the team.

That difference is a big one, but both teams are showing a shared interest in doing their homework on the top draft prospects at the position. Michael Silver of NFL Media reports that both teams are scheduled to visit with Cal quarterback Jared Goff this week.

Just as Brees’ presence hasn’t stopped the Saints from checking out the quarterbacks entering the league this year, re-signing Fitzpatrick probably wouldn’t take the Jets out of the quarterback market. Even if Fitzpatrick secures the job for 2016, the Jets would have a need to develop a quarterback for the long term and their work this offseason suggests that they aren’t sold on Geno Smith or Bryce Petty for that role. The same could be said of the Saints and 2015 third-round pick Garrett Grayson.

Getting Goff might require a trade up the draft board for either team, however. Goff’s also slated to meet with the Eagles and 49ers this week, both of whom pick ahead of the Saints and Jets, and there’s been no shortage of other teams on the radar as potential landing spots for one of the draft’s top quarterbacks.

This better be a smokescreen or Loomis has lost his mind…”

Why? What have you, in your professional talent evaluating expertise, have you seen that would lead you to believe the Saints shouldn’t select Goff?

  2. If he’s available to the Saints at 12 you have to consider taking him.

I’m a firm believer on BPA and he fits the bill if he falls to 12

    Brees isn’t getting any younger…

  4. Brees is in full decline. His past 2 seasons have been far below “elite” status. Still good but at the cusp of being done.

  5. If the Jets can get him at 20, then go ahead.
They have too many holes to burn draft picks.
Getting a young QB who turns out to be Tier 2 won’t help much.
They are an old team that drafted poorly for 6 years.
That needs a long term rebuilding. Trading up to get a QB who may be over rated isn’t the way to go.

  6. Bet this guy thought that the packers taking Rodgers was the worst pick ever. Drafts aren’t always what can you do for me now. If Goff could sit behind Brees for a couple years, he would have a better chance at an NFL career then if he gets selected by a team that needs him to compete now.

    Needs.

We don’t NEED a QB, we have one of the best in the game and he wants to retire a Saint. QB is one of the few positions we are in good shape at.

There’s a single letter that describes what we NEED in the draft, in every pick-

    D…

  8. But why? Brees is going to play until he’s 45. And the team is about to pay him like he’s 25.

  9. Could there be a better situation for Jared Goff than to learn behind Drew Brees for a year or three? That would also give him time to bulk up with an NFL training regimen.

More QBs should get brought in that way, IMO.

  10. The Jets QB situation stinks. Fitz is slightly above average but not clutch and Petty is at least 2 years away. He is a 1 read and throw guy, which is a recipe for disaster in the NFL. And Geno…I assume this new regime has no interest in him. If they think Goff is the solution – then go get him. Nothing on their current roster is getting them a sniff at the Super Bowl. I don’t care how many All Pto D lineman they stack up.

I’m right there with ya on BPA regardless of what you already have, but man you guys have been spoiled having Brees for so long. What until you don’t have a QB, that is when it REALLY gets miserable. Just ask a lot of teams including the Jets who think Fitz is really decent.

When you have the opportunity, don’t turn it down because it will bite you in the ass. I think Denver may find that out this year.
