Baylor’s Shawn Oakman arrested on sexual assault charge

Former Baylor defensive lineman Shawn Oakman, who was once considered a strong NFL draft prospect, has been arrested on a sexual assault charge.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports that Waco police arrested Oakman today. He is accused of sexually assaulting a female Baylor student early on Sunday morning. The woman says Oakman forced her into a bedroom in his home, forcibly removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her.

According to a police report, Oakman says he had consensual sex with the woman.

A 6-foot-8, 287-pounder with good athletic ability, Oakman was once considered a potential first-round pick. But he did not have a good senior season last year, and he has a history of off-field issues. He began his college career at Penn State, but coach Bill O’Brien kicked him off the team after he was accused of attempting to steal food from a campus store and grabbing the wrist of a cashier who tried to stop him.

The sexual assault charge means Oakman will almost certainly not be drafted, and may never play in the NFL.

  1. Good grief. What is going on lately? There are far too many top prospects who show incredible lack of vision and self-control. Considering that they are going to top-notch athletic institutions and playing with an eye towards becoming professional players, how can they be so stupidly short-sighted? Wow.

  2. Judge: Shawn Oakman, how do you plead?

    Shawn Oakman: Not Guilty

Judge: I concur, thank you for your time Mr. Oakman

Voted a thumbs up, but had to cut and paste and post this again as your spot on with the question? I wonder if there is anyone tracking the seemingly increase in these sorts of reports?

  4. At least he’s got a degree to fall back on after he leaves the Big House. Wait, what?

  5. Congratulations, muscleman, you’re now officially going undrafted. He was at best a fringe 3rd-rounder going into the combine, then dropped more after a combine where he displayed a lack of athleticism completely out of keeping with his physique, and now this. I hope his agent didn’t buy too many things on credit.

  6. As for the stealing, he should have went to FSU. Crab legs are free at the grocery store down there.

  7. You’d think he could control himself until after the draft and hopefully get whatever signing bonus he might get before acting stupid. He just saved a bunch of teams, perhaps all except for Dallas or Baltimore, from drafting him.

  8. Here’s a case where his past is going to come back to haunt him. He was already kicked out of PSU (which is pretty hard to do) for being a knucklehead. Who knows what else he did at Baylor that was covered up. Where’s Art Briles to give him a character reference?

  9. These guys can’t lay low for a few months to collect the biggest pay check of their lives. They don’t deserve to play in the NFL or collect big money. How stupid can you be. People like myself would kill to be in their shoes. Isn’t fair!!!! Use god damn brain, you guys.

  10. Very disappointing. I know where he’s from and know some of his family. Somewhere he went off the rails!

He was a very good HS basketball player…now he’s in the “he said, she said” game.

  11. He was a first overall candidate for the 2016 draft after the 2015 draft wrapped up.

2015-2016 collegiate year dragged him down to a 2nd round but high upside guy.
2016 NFL combine brought him to a 3rd-4th round talent.
2016 Sexual Assault charge drops him out of the draft entirely.

Unreal how fast you can fall in life when you aren’t smart and don’t put in effort.

It’s called athletic entitlement. It’s a syndrome that blinds the afflicted from the consequences of their actions. It is hardly a recent development it’s onset is usually presaged by a “Don’t you know who I am?” attitude

  13. next up we’ll be hearing that he’s rooming with Johnny Football to straighten his life out.

  14. It’s tough to talk fairly about this. There are a lot of women who endure crimes only to see guilty men not convicted. There are also a lot of men who are falsely charged. If truth mattered as much as hot takes, we’d read the police report before we assumed too much in any direction.

  15. These athletes get drunk and the demons come out of them. You’d think that during the most important time of their lives that they would avoid it. It can only hurt your health and your future. Oakman has a history of stupidity. Only gets worse with the drinking.

  16. Dallas can draft him. Remember, they have a program in place that can help young men like this. Just look at what they done for Greg Hardy. I’m sure any man would love to have Greg dating their daughter. Thanks Jerry for helping these poor lost souls.

  17. Fishy. Sounds like a woman scorned somehow. He will not be found guilty without any witness. His word versus hers with no apparent signs of struggle means he walks. What if your son was accused of rape or assault and he says he didn’t do it? We should let the court decide.

  18. Its a farce. The #1 pick over all last year was also accused of sexual assault and was also convicted of shop lifting food and it didn’t hurt his draft status in the least. So why all of a sudden, is this particular player going to not even be drafted for doing the same thing that Wiston did last year? Maybe he (Oakman) was only trying to climb all the way to the top of the draft board?

  19. The coaches and faculty along this young mans scholastic career are probably guilty of letting him get away with all sorts of things, resulting in what you have today. A guy who probably isn’t very book smart but has a degree and now won’t get drafted so what is he going to do? More than likely be in the system.

  20. Further evidence that not all collage players are stand up people just because they go to a big school and get a scholarship. Top programs want top athletes. They will look away from personal issues if they think you can help them win. Regardless of what the schools say to the press after such instances, they know the public will forget these kids down the line and that all the fans care about is winning. Some of these players couldn’t get a job as a bag boy at a grocery store! Yet they get a free ride because they can play ball. I give Bill O’Brien credit for kicking him off of the Penn State team. Sadly, many other teams were probably salivating to get this kid when he got booted.

  21. I was really rooting for this guy being as though he’s from Philly, but geez, just seems like trouble follows him wherever he goes. I saw his long winded apology after the PS mishap and got the sense then it would only be a matter of time before he would be on a blotter again…..

So we should let the court decide, but you’re going to go ahead and label her a “woman scorned”. Got it.

  24. Recommendations prior to draft.
No girlfriends. You are going to dump her anyway as you move on to other women once you sign that contract and she knows it. Wait until you are drafted and settled.
Hire a call girl if you must.
Don’t drink and drive. No pot.
    Take cold showers.
Understand bad press will jeopardize your future.
    Leave leeches behind.
    Lay low for goodness sakes.

  25. I assumed this was an old allegation now converted into an actual charge. No, no, no, no: Ken Starr, of the Clinton impeachment Ken Starr is currently the Baylor Chancellor.

Here’s hoping he loses his job.

    Cheers.
