Giants avoid Washington team name in official schedule posted on Twitter

Last year, the Eagles avoided using the Washington team name in advance of a Week Four game against their NFC East rivals. Until people noticed and the Eagles did an about-face.

Another NFC East about-face could be in the offing.

The official Giants schedule posted at the team’s official Twitter page lists the team name of every opponent except one: Washington.

It’s in there twice: at Cowboys, Saints, Washington, at Vikings, at Packers, Ravens, at Rams (London), Eagles, Bengals, Bears, at Browns, at Steelers, Cowboys, Lions, at Eagles, at Washington.

The same schedule, as posted at the team’s official website, includes the Washington team name.

It surely wasn’t a mistake or a fluke that the schedule released via Twitter doesn’t use a nickname that continues to be the subject of plenty of controversy. And whoever did it may have some tough questions to answer.

But if the person did it because the person believes the nickname is inappropriate — and/or because the person declines to use the name out of respect for those Native Americans who are genuinely offended by it — it’s an admirable position that hopefully won’t result in unemployment.

UPDATED 9:23 p.m. ET: And there’s the about face. A version of the schedule posted on Twitter after this item was published now includes the Washington team name. Which only makes the prior omission more glaring.

  1. Yet another bunch of cowards cowering to politically correct whiners.
I wonder how people with gigantism feel about the Giants as the New York team’s nickname?
Gigantism causes very serious health issues for many people and often leads to shortened lives. The tallest man in history, Robert Wadlow, suffered from gigantism and he grew to 8′ 11″ tall. He died at only 22 years of age.
So — hey Giants!! — your name is offensive, too!!
While we’re at it — how about these other sports names which are offensive:
Fighting Irish — if that’s not a stereotypical name, I don’t know what is.
Chargers — That’s offensive to people who are compulsory spenders.
Raiders — Raiders are Pirates who steal from others.
    Pirates — See above
    Buccaneers — See above
Indians — Ever look at the Cleveland Indians red-faced Indian on their logo? Tell me that’s not offensive!
Blackhawks — Check out the Indian on their logo, too.
Orlando Magic — Any hint of witchcraft, magic, or sorcery offends Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Padres — Separation of religion and sports is a must.
    Angels — See above
Braves — They still do that stupid Indian chant and chop in Atlanta. How offensive is that???

The point is, we can carry this stupidity as far as anyone wants it to go. For me — the Redskins will always be the Redskins and I don’t care if they change the name or not, I’m still going to call them the Redskins.
I still call St. Johns teams the Redmen instead of the Red Storm, too. The politically correct nitwits don’t realize that nickname came about because the players wore red uniforms in the 1920’s and had nothing to do with the color of anyone’s skin, initially.

  2. Some intern just got let go.
As a lifelong Giants fan I used to just call them the Skins but since all this PC crap has gathered steam I try to remember to call them the REDSKINS.
I fear the day SJW’s take up the cause of exceptionally tall people and campaign against my teams name

WWEK 4 – RGIII returns home to face my Redskins😦 That moment where you realize that RGIII is the opponent and your QB is a beady eyed choker😦

Just wait until they pay him $130 million haha

  4. Someone should just ask Mara what he thinks about the name. Then we’d all know what they should and will be called.

  5. Washington Wizards– veiled tribute to the KKK.
Imperial Wizard or Grand Wizard. Very offensive.
Must be a Washington D.C. thing.

  6. The PC angle is being used to “fundamentally transform” America. Everything is PC now. Look how people act these days. They are so worried about offending someone because they don’t want to be called a racist or a bigot. It is quite odd really. PC was a joke 10 years ago. Now it is how everyone must be or they are labeled. Everything has a PC angle now. It a disturbing. I think we have a lot bigger problems in this country than to worry if we are being PC enough.

  7. This topic is on life-support as it is. Just some millennial social media staffer with the Giants trying to make a tired point. Some people in the media don’t wish to use the name. Some don’t mind. Let it go.

  8. The “Washington team” name? Are you talking about the Redskins are the team from Seattle, Washington?

  9. F you Mara!! You can take our cap space, but you’ll never take our division championships!!!

    Hail

  10. I don’t understand why they are so intent ruining something that means so much to it’s fans.

Seriously…who da fuq are we hurting with this name? HUH?

Jesus effing Christ no one is going around harassing native americans calling them Redskins…

  11. They should just rename themselves the Tyrannies. Anyone that complains would be called a bigot.

  12. This is the dumbest issue in football. They are the Redskins. They have been the Redskins for nearly 90 years. The name of the team will always be Redskins. Anybody who protests this has too much time on their hands.

  13. Mike, you do know you look as silly as them by refusing to use the Washington team name, All 32 teams have a 2 part name not just 31, it is spelled REDSKIN’s if that helps you, bigot

  14. It’s a racist name and must be changed. And, for you racists and others who don’t know the real history of the USA (I recommend Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States), Native Americans were driven off their land, lied-to, starved and massacred by white Americans, and the treaties which the Native Americans were forced to sign are not being honored by the government. Think about that the next time you want to attach the “political correctness” label to this issue.

  15. Yeah, Howard Zinn. Great book. Ok, I thought about it. Washington Redskins it is.

By the way, since you feel the Natives have been so poorly treated then have you petitioned to have the Indian removed from the Minnesota flag? He’s riding a horse and carrying a spear. I mean that really has to bother you.

  16. As a diehard Cowboys fan, I hope they never change the name. They are the REDSKINS! I heard that the majority of Native Americans approve of the name, the people who are offended by the name are a bunch of pen pushing pansies and need to realize there are much more important things to worry about then a professional sports teams name.

it would be great if the REDSKINS listed the Giants as the “New Jersey Giants” Prove they aren’t!

And the Redskins as the “Landover, Maryland Redskins”

  18. …..Hail to the Redskins!!!!!!!…….and this is from a Eagles fan. NO matter how loud the whiney political righteous get….NFL fans will yell louder…….Hail to the Redskins!!!!!.

  19. How are the Cowboys not in controversy they are the ones who massacred these are the white people who ravaged and killed native Americans. Anyone that opposes the name REDSKINS Google what OKLAHOMA means and get a live REDSKINS REDSKINS REDSKINS REDSKINS! !!!!!

Your first sentence you assert an incorrect premise. Racial slurs have purposeful malice when used, the name Redskins has never been used in a malicious manner.

Your second sentence could be reworded as “if you don’t agree you’re a racist, and oh by the way here’s a documentary that has zero to do with the Washington Redskins.”

Sorry but this issue is mostly a bunch of wealthy casino owners trying to use the racism as an argument to assert copyright ownership over the Redskins trademarks and a bunch of media members who are being offended on another group’s behalf.

  21. At least here in New England we’re safe. They only accuse us of cheating. We’re off the PC Patrol’s radar.

  22. PC, always has been, and still is, and always will be ‘Garbage.’ Are the giants really the New York giants? Of course not. Why doesn’t Mara admit they are the New Jersey giants. He’s so bent on yielding to PC regarding the Redskin name, he doesn’t see or want to see the legal tricks and maneuvers he’s used to have the NY brand attached to the giants name. Just like a phony politican, tell the public what they want to hear, but do nothing. Go REDSKINS, beat and whip the phony frauds from jersey. Be interesting to hear his excuse if the giants make it five straight years, and no playoffs.

  23. Oh friend, if you only fought so hard against the “Fighting Irish” and their mascot. I mean, I understand due to the business relationship it can’t happen but your plight would not ring so hollow. Go Irish!

  24. That person you speak of clearly has mental health issues and should see someone immediately.
