Are Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke already feuding?

AP

Sometimes, a reader will send a link to a story, I’ll read it, and I’ll decide that the best move is to ignore it. And then another reader will send the same story. And then another. And another. Until the only way to get people to quit sending the same link will be to write about the issue and be done with it.

This is one of those times. (Obviously. I mean, why the hell else would I have led with that?)

NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger recently said the following on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, via CBSSports.com: “I already hear there’s problems in the building between Chip [Kelly] and [Trent] Baalke.”

That’s fine, but NFL analysts hear a lot of things. And just because they hear things, it doesn’t mean those things they hear are accurate.

Who can forget, for example, former NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp declaring to the world that Jeremy Shockey was the “snitch” in the Saints bounty case? Also, ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski opted last December to dabble in the world of NFL reporting by declaring that the one-game suspension of Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had been overturned.

So I’ll wait until a reporter from NFL Network or ESPN or FOX Sports or CSNBayArea.com or the Sacramento Bee or the Bay Area News Group or the San Francisco Chronicle reports this before concluding that it’s true. Or I’ll wait until I’ve heard the same something from a sufficiently reliable source or sources.

While it may be inevitable that problems arise between a coach and G.M. whose marriage feels like a ceremony that involved a shotgun, it seems too early for problems to arise, especially since Kelly is smart enough to realize that he needs to conduct himself differently than he did in Philadelphia. But if there are indeed already “problems in the building,” it’s time for the team’s owner to clunk heads together and get guys on the same page, or start making plans to hit the reset button after what, based on the team’s schedule, could be another long, fruitless season.

  1. This is an ownership that have no people skills and no real direction. If there is a problem then it will play out to the determent of the team and the fans. 10 years of hell faithful

  2. “especially since Kelly is smart enough to realize that he needs to conduct himself differently than he did in Philadelphia. ”

One would hope so, but a common trait among people who are jerks is that they don’t realize they’re the problem, they think everyone else is.

  3. What Chip “I’m not GM but want full personnel control” Kelly is fighting with the real GM ???
    Couldn’t be–that’s crazy talk.

  4. Honestly, who cares? If they get along or don’t the organization is still in shambles and screwed up the whole trading of #7. Tomsula was the fall guy last year and it will be someone else this year when they end the season 4-12. The local media will begin playing Jeds famous quotes “were about winning championships” and hell be forced to fire someone else. and so on and so on.

  5. Given Kelly was only out of work for about a week I doubt he feels any need to act any differently than he did in Philly. But easy to imagine some resentment since he no longer has control over personnel and the owner and GM above him are notorious morons.

It’s they guy who thinks he can do no wrong and never accepts responsibility paired with two guys who can do no right and never accept any responsibility.

  6. Brian Baldinger is as accurate as his name is funny. He’s based out of Philly and they bent on throwing shade at Kelly any opportunity they get.

  7. Just when they say it’s a 95.7 fanatic in Philadelphia with the source you have to know that there hatred for Chip Kelley will be there forever lol

  8. That’s the Philadelphia Eagles for y’all always blame the coaches and never the owner and the organization I guess that’s why they have NO SUperbowls lol They did the same thing to Andy Reid and look at him now lol

  9. Baldinger is a Philly homer, and has no inside 49er info. If there was a ‘feud’ Kiwakami would be all over it, way before an outsider like Baldinger woul be.

Just another parting jab from a sour Eagles fan.

  10. From 49er fans who have been fans for years, it is an ownership problem. They can’t stand him, and with Chip Kelley who is an arrogant person, why are we surprised??? It’s a match made in hell I should think.

  11. Chip Kelly really didn’t want personnel control in Philly. But he didn’t trust Roseman selecting the players. He wanted someone he trusted in player selection. Roseman fired the guy Kelly trusted, Tom Gamble. Gamble happens to be Senior Personnel Executive of the 49ers.. If one connects the dots, it is conceivable to think that Kelly is pushing for Gamble to take over GM duties from Baalke.

  12. How long before Baalke’s daughter starts tweeting her disapproval?

  13. When I hear this from beat reporters like Tim Kawakami, Matt Maiocco or Marc Purdy then I will give it credence. Sounds like somebody has an agenda or needed some attention. Every NFL front office is arguing now about who to draft, trade up, trade down. Show me don’t tell me.

Ummmmm, Brian Baldinger in no way works for the Eagles. He’s a radio and t.v. personality. He wasn’t referring to Chip Kelly’s time with the Eagles. And you’re Andy Reid comment- yeah, how IS he doing now? Learn to read.

  15. All the trolls here commenting on gossip??

Yeah, we all know Brian Baldingers “I heard” is reliable.

There may be issues in the SF front office but I wouldnt rely on hearsay from an organization (Phil) that trashed him constantly

  16. “Don’t believe those dad gum Yahoo articles!”

  17. My two cents aint worth a penny but I’ve had this thought that Balke had visions of Kaperdink being the next great QB with the right coaching and I think he brought Chip in to resurect this guy. I think the whole focus is to get Kaperdink on the right track.
Hey the guy was one play from winning it all. Balke aint ready to part ways with a guy who may need a good coach to get on track.

  18. Baalke should have been fired last year, somehow he is kept around. He is garbage. He ran Harbaugh out of town, botched everything last year and hired that bum Tomsula.

Now the second most cap space in the league heading in to free agency, other than signing DL depth on the team and the kicker. He has kept that cancer Ahmad Brooks, let Boone leave and replaced him with Zane Beadles. No improvement at CB, WR, Edge, ILB, QB, TE, or even RT because he seems to be screwing up Anthony Davis too.

Now by far the most cap space and still nothing but a Guard who couldn’t cut it with Jacksonville last year. Let’s not forget the complete botch with Kraperpick and now we’re stuck with an awful QB where it’s impossible as hell not to be a problem or distraction.

We’re supposed to trust him to rebuild through the draft, yet he’s drafted poorly each draft. His best 1st round pick was Aldon Smith and look how that worked out. Baalke has got to go!

Whether he’d fail or succeed, Chip Kelly has no chance to succeed in SF because Baalke has dug a hole and prior to that hole did nothing to improve the roster.

  19. The hardest thing to do is convince a narcissist that you don’t like them. imagine how hard it is when you have a herd of narcissists trying to run the show

Definition of the current 49er leadership

  20. To the dufus who said…

“Let’s see, Phil Dawson left the Browns 3 years ago to get a ring. Ho’w that goin’, Phil…”

He has won an NFC Championship, and played in a super bowl. How would that that have gone if he had stayed in Cleveland?

I mean seriously, who t he hell criticizes phil dawson. One of the most classy players in the NFL.

  21. How do you know Chip Kelly is smart enough? I’m so tired of this guy being anointed a genius. Where is the evidence of this great mind? He is an arrogant fool.

  22. this sounds like friction over kaep.

couldn’t happen to 2 nicer guys.

and I bet kaep would love to indirectly disrupt the niners org.

  23. ” I’ll wait until a reporter reports this before concluding that it is true”

Good thinking, because they’re never wrong

  24. While this whole story is likely fabricated by one of the 50M fans that hate Chip, at the end of the day what difference does it make whether they get along? The hole that the 49 front office has dug themselves is way too deep for even Chip’s ego to overcome. They’ve painted themselves into a corner, so Kap will start (as they need a fall guy) and they’ll eke out 5-6 wins and declare a successful rebuilding… Rinse and redo in 2017…

  25. and yet people bash Elway and the Broncos all the time. question is who would you rather have as an orginazation, the Broncos with Pat Bowlen and Elway or the 49s group?

  26. Wait “philly sour grapes” it sounds like you just don’t like philly. Now lets clear this up. Flat up cuts one the best downfield threats in the game. Than adds on with the phony gang ties story. Than has the nerve to say Kaepernick won’t be cut. “You don’t cut talent” Huh. Trades Lesean Mccoy for a bag of chips. Trades Nick Foles for Bradford gets fleeced in the trade. Overpays average dback, signs Murray than doesn’t use him right. Yeah all of this was Howie Roseman idea. If you can’t see the con game than you shouldn’t be commenting. Wait untill his new division gets finished with him. See if you will still be backing him than.

  27. Howie just can’t help himself. He keeps floating crap about Chip. Philly will be whining about Chip 20 years from now.

  28. This truly is the second coming of Snyder and cerrato. Don’t worry though SF fans; it only took Snyder about two decades to hire a real GM.

  29. York needs to make it perfectly clear to both of these guys…if it doesn’t work it isn’t an either or proposition, it’s both go. Egos need to be set aside, and in the case of these two…that’s a lot to ask.

    ——————–
That is a smart comment. Baalke is up next on the firing line, not Kelly. Kelly has a three year deal and York is still paying Tomsula. No way he’s paying for 3 coaches at the same time by firing Kelly.

  31. Chip Kelly and Jim Harbaugh are CEO type head coaches that need full roster control to be successful.

Jed York talks about he’s looking for a Bill Walsh type head coach. There is no way Bill Walsh could work for Baalke. Instead of drafting a Joe Montana or trading up for a Jerry Rice Baalke would have picked a defensive linemen or a Linebacker.

  32. This saga provides detail instruction for destroying a successful franchise. Just because you can’t get along with anyone. I wonder how many millions will get flushed down the toilet, before somebody wakes up. The new NFL circus, once called the 9ers.

  33. Isn’t it true that a few years ago Trent Baalke was considered a top 5 GM along with Ozzie Newsome, the GM of the Steelers, the GM of the Packers, and Bill Belichick? Now he’s considered one of the worst…

  34. I wrote a book to stop people from asking me the same question all the time. Two days to write my best-seller. See what some of us do to stop the emails?

  35. “Chip just found out that Baalke doesn’t know what he’s doing” @bert1913 Exactly!

  36. I’ve been a 49ers fan for a long time and I am still pissed off for them letting harbaugh go. The reason Kaepernick was thriving under harbaughs offence is because harbaugh is a qb guru. He can take a mediocre qb and make them look great. Want proof just look at what he did last season at michigan. He took a second string qb from Iowa and made him compete for the big ten title. I hate baalke and the York’s for letting him go.

  37. I’m I the only one convinced there are just as many idiot Bay Area Sport’s writers as there are idiot’s in the 49er front office? Kohn and Kawakami alone make me just SMH weekly. This article kind of touches on it.
