Patriots release defensive linemen Jones, Kitchen

The Patriots announced Friday that they’ve released defensive linemen Chris Jones and Ishmaa’ily Kitchen.

Jones, who was due to make $1.67 million in 2016, missed all of last season due to injury.

A sixth-round pick of the Texans in 2013, Jones was cut and was briefly with the Buccaneers before being claimed by the Patriots and starting 23 games at defensive end in 2013-14.

Kitchen was signed by the Patriots last December. He started last season with the Browns and also played for the Lions before landing in New England. A nose tackle, Kitchen played three seasons with the Browns after initially signing with the Ravens as undrafted free agent in 2012.

Jones is subject to waivers. Kitchen’s contract was terminated and he becomes a free agent.

The Patriots also cut defensive lineman Dominique Easley earlier this week.

  1. I thought it was kind of strange the Pats had so many DT FAs in for visits this offseason, at a position they seemed relatively ok at. Shows what I know. Now it’s obvious, after Branch and MBrown, they just didn’t like what they had. Now it’s Potroast and Kuhn, and probably a pick in a draft deep in DTs.

  2. I don’t see how this has much to do w/Easley. More about picking up Potroast, Kuhn and Kearse. It only cost them about a mil more to cut Easley than it did to keep him. They are a little tight w/the cap, and did save about 2.5 with those 2DTs, but I still think they’re gonna do something w/Amendola and MCannon’s big numbers. They don’t need much for the rookie pool either.

  3. Chia-pet….is just your garden variety tool, nothing original. Pats picked for the SB again..G.O.A.T. torching his team for almost 2 decades.

  4. Guess ol’ Bill figured since they have enough Pot Roast there was no need to go back to the Kitchen

  5. I know Terripet, its hard to be a fan of such an awful collection of poorly managed bottom feeders like the Bills.

I know how sad it makes you feel to watch your team miss the playoffs year after year after year when the Pats and their fans are laughing at that pathetic organization.

I know that all you have left with football is to make sad little claims on pft about the Pats. Must be a rough way to watch a football season, seeing your team play like the losers they are every year.

Maybe you should go find a “sport” that someone up there might be able to win, like curling, tiddley winks or junior hockey.

  6. Why would anyone be a fan of a sport where they TRULY believe a certain team has been cheating and beating their team for over 15 years? They wouldn’t or they are the biggest suckers I can think of.

  7. WE NEED A COMPLETE MAKEOVER .

Bad drafts and poor personnel decisions have crippled this team.

Even with Peyton out of the picture we don’t stand with this geriatric team and Grandpa Bradys noodle arm.

Play Jimmy … he is better looking too.

  9. So tiresome. Bunch of laughable schmucks who would fire their coach yesterday if Belichick became available.
Keep it up jamokes. Hey, maybe your teams’ time will come before you kick the bucket. If not, well…

  10. Try as you might, the Patriots legacy is cheating, despite the pithy little quips the Patsy faithful try hard to beat down opposition to. The are the only team to lose 2 1st rd picks for cheating. Fined $500,000 for cheating. The “Deflator”. Counting on the courts to let their QB play, instead of the league, where it belongs. Cheating. Thy name is Patriots.

    Hee Hee Hee….good one catnap!

  12. Hey cat quick: you have the Pats confused with Denver who lead the league in PED violations & were fined a total of $1, 918, 000 for violating the salary cap!!
Besides scientists have PROVEN there was NO Tampering!!

  13. Gotta love the Hatriots!

If these guys were prosecutors they’d give a guy the death penalty despite the appearance of a live murder “victim”

Um guys – Roger Goodell thinks you’re all stupid and gullible enough to buy his story that the Laws of Physics don’t apply to the NFL

That’s GREAT circumstantial evidence you got.

But the footballs were never deflated – it’s a fact

  14. If you can’t beat them, call them cheaters and/or change the rules- Ravens/Colts/Rams/Pittsburgh Executives, Coaches, Ex-Players and Fans

  15. Terripet- you should move to the Boston suburbs with us and enjoy a lot of wonderful Fall weekends raking leaves and enjoying campfires while listening to the Patriots invariably stomping some poor AFC East opponent. You’re missing out. It’s fun. It really is. Really.

  16. Please explain why was a crew of referees was only able to gauge 12 of the Patriots balls and 4 of the Colts balls during a 15 minute half time break? (The “Patriots cheated” haters claim that Jim McNally both “deflated” & gauged 12 balls in 90 seconds. Makes is seem like the NFL stopped checking after the first 4th Colts balls because the results were indicating that both teams balls had lost pressure due to the cold and rainy weather conditions. In law they call that “exculpatory evidence” and it is not supposed to be ignored.

Remember according to what some claim Jim McNally did – the NFL should have been able to check 24 balls in less than 3 minutes. Plus the NFL didn’t have to take the extra time to remove any air. (Only had 8 more Colts balls left to check so what harm would taking less than 60 seconds more to check the remaining 8 balls to preserve the integrity of the game? Show one more commercial if you have to.

  17. The integrity of the game will forever be tainted if the Patriots don’t get the stolen draft picks back that were taken after the Patriots were blamed because the pressure of gas in sealed containers is lowered when the container moved from a warm environment to a much colder one. Like from a 70 degree locker room to a football field that is 49 degrees, as it was during the infamous game. Plus it was raining during that game. Anyone with even half of a brain could understand that leather would stretch when wet and shrink with it dries. So if the football stretches slightly when it gets soaked, the pressure inside would drop slightly. Add that drop to the natural drop from the temperature and that vindicates the Patriots.

Anyone with even a modicum understanding of science would immediately recognize a major problem with the way the NFL officials measured the 12 Patriots footballs and the 4 Colt’s footballs. Measuring all 12 of the Patriots footballs while allowing the Colts balls to warm up after bringing them inside a building during the halftime break would invalidate the results. Anyone but the most gullible would not have been duped asked why didn’t the NFL alternate and measure one football of each team and then repeat until ALL 24 FOOTBALLS WERE MEASURED. Alternating and measuring all the footballs would have been a more scientific approach that could be understood by a 4th grader. The way the NFL measured the PSI in the footballs was either a deliberate scam or a moronic blunder.

Anyone still supporting the Patriots loss of draft picks or the possible suspension of Brady is either one of the gullible suckers or is a participation trophy “earner” that would be happy with one of the 31 other teams being handed false wins after the Patriots are handicapped by the NFL after being blamed for something that was already explained by science. (PV = nRT)

  18. You Patriot fans are just completely delusional, it’s totally ridiculous.

Look, boast about all your success and trophies all you want, but stop living in denial. The Patriots have created a culture of cheating. It’s no big deal at this point, they get away with it and they win year after year. They bend the rules to the absolute brink and sometimes they go too far and get busted. It happens to successful people every day in this country.

You guys protest that all these executives on other high end teams and former players are just “jealous” and “bitter,” just give it a rest already. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. These guys have better things to than go around whining. They do it because the know what’s going on.

This is not to say Bill and Tom aren’t great, they definitely are. However, they both clearly will do whatever it takes to win, and that can be a good and bad thing. They will not accept failure, so they take every advantage they can get.

Don’t worry, this is America, and the Pats are no worse than our own politicians. Greasy, slimy and corrupt. Making their own rules and doing whatever they have to in order to stay on top. But it’s cool, because as long as you pander to the right people and cover your tracks, you’re golden.

Hey, if you get fined every now and then and lose a first rounder here and there in the process, it’s no biggie. Just all part of the “haters going to hate,” thing, I guess.

  19. Making moves to sign this years draft picks, maybe a roster spot for a guy like Jamal Charles in a potential trade? Any which way, I like to roster on paper, hopefully bringing Scarnecchia back will help the problems on O-line. Can’t wait for football to be back.

  20. Jones definitely has potential, so hopefully the plan is to re-sign him to a minimum contract? Maybe he refused to take a cut so he could test the market and he’ll find a better contract somewhere else, or we’ll get him back no harm done for less money.

  21. You guys protest that all … are just “jealous” and “bitter”

When all they say is “I hear they cheat” without providing any evidence of it, it comes across as jealous and bitter (and petty and tiresome and extremely weak). Just saying.

    ===============================
Wow, all that hate and breakfast isn’t even over yet. I hope your day gets better than its starting out to be.
One thing about being a Patriots fan. We get to look forward to how they will dismantle the opposing team cause it’s always different. And that’s exciting. Unlike I suppose, knowing your team is going to be dismantled and not being able to do anything about it.

  23. P.S. To the haters who are convinced the Patriots deflated the AFCCG balls because a guy called himself the Deflator in the middle of the off-season:
The Deflator either went to all the trouble of deflating the balls by 1/2 PSI (worst-case Wells Report theory), or he didn’t deflate them at all (best-case Wells Report / Referee Anderson’s Gauge testimony / Ideal Gas Law explanation). Which means Tom Brady either directed him to deflate the balls by ONE HALF PSI…or he didn’t tell him to do anything at all… So the entire Hater Theory of Deflategate Cheating hinges on the assumption that the evil plan was to let out ONE HALF PSI from each ball. I can see why all the Haters are so obsessively convinced there was an evil plan…the Patriots cleverly chose to take a very small and imperceptible advantage instead of going for something like 2 or 3 PSI that would have actually made a difference in ball grip, etc.
