Fitzpatrick, Jets talks could quickly get interesting

Last year, quarterback Brian Hoyer chose the Texans over the Jets. This year, the Jets are still looking to sign a quarterback. And that quarterback could be Hoyer.

With the Texans not getting any trade offers and likewise unwilling to risk owing Hoyer $4 million if he drops a dumbbell on his foot on the first day of offseason workouts, the veteran is once again a free agent, able to sign with any team.

The Jets, who currently are at impasse with 2015 starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, could make a quick move to get Hoyer. Or, alternatively, the availability of Hoyer could get Fitzpatrick and the Jets to find a way to make the two circles of their Venn diagram smooch.

The Broncos also could make a play for Hoyer, who was the starter in Cleveland before winning the starting job last year in Houston.

60 responses to “Fitzpatrick, Jets talks could quickly get interesting

  1. Smart move by the Jets not to sign Fitzpatrick to what he demanded. They hold all of the leverage right now, they could sign Hoyer who would be cheaper and could give them the same production Fitz did or they can simply look to the draft.

  2. When did Fitzpatrick turn into Joe Namath? Yes, he had a very solid year in 2015, but the Jets still missed the playoffs. He’s never had sustained success as a starter. You get paid on what you’re going to produce, not what you did produce.

  3. Honestly Fitz is better than Hoyer, but if Hoyer is $10 million less, I’m sure the Jets would give that some thought. This should drive down Fitz’s price though. I don’t see any other teams beating down his door.

  4. That kid from Alabama will be available to the Jets. He’s got canon for an arm and he played for Jimbo Fisher before he went to Bama. Jimbo Fisher runs a pro style offense.

  5. Fitz better wake up. He was the beneficiary of the best wr tandem he has ever played with and is now trying to act like we don’t remember what he played like 9 out of the previous 10 years

  6. Finally, the Jets have upside negotiating with Fitz now, plus draft upcoming very soon.

Its either Fitz to wake up soon and sign with Jets asap, or he gonna lose his starting job waiting for him.

I don’t think there any team but Jets that has starting job ready for him.

    Patriot has 0.

Nobody respect Patriots anymore since they multi cheating so many times and caught 3 times…

Well, in all fariness, Namath wasn’t really that good either….

  9. Fitz is better than Hoyer and should not let the fact that the Jets want to talk with Hoyer alter his strategy. Hoyer is a normal back up and Fitz is a better/quality back up with starting potential. Fitz would be who I signed for money between backup and starter money. I would then look for a potential quality QB for the future in this draft or the next.

  10. “I rather to support any teams that has honor, integrity, and respect to the game.

    Uhhhhh……What?!?

  11. Jets need to sign Fitz. He had a great year. Best QB we have had since Pennington.

Admittedly that is a low bar, with Sanchez, Geno and broken Brett Farve the only long term starters since Pennington, but I don’t think Hoyer comes close to knocking Fitz off the perch.

  12. Thanks Mrs. Fitzpatrick. Ryan is better than Brian, just like you said. But can you ask Ryan to trim that beard, it’s not gonna prevent concussions any better, and it clearly is very un-hygienic

  13. Hoyer is a competent back-up. Not much to come and go on between the pair. Hoyer will accept less money, I guess. Fitz has no chance of getting the long term big money deal. Maybe a 1 year $12-15 mil. Possibly a longer deal to wow the media, but not guaranteed.

  14. I don’t know if anyone saw Hoyer play lately, but if any team tries using that for leverage vs. Fitz, he and that Harvard Education will probably ask for an extra 500K.

  15. Fitz is a smart guy but I believe Todd Bowles has a very good football mind; I do not know what the endgame is here and who in the Jets front office has the final say. I will say that the last game of the year for Fitz and the playoff loss for Hoyer where both very full diapers and they have both had chances (11 teams between the two of them) before now. I do not think the Jets should overpay either but like grandma used to say “dolly you buy cheap you get cheap”.

  16. Fitzpatrick is a Harvard grad married to his Harvard sweetheart for the past 10 years, since not long after graduating. He and his wife have five kids and live a happy suburban lifestyle.

Fitzpatrick has earned $39 million in his career. He has a personal net worth today of close to $20 million. He is in good health. He doesn’t need to work another day in his life. He has no reason to sign with the Jets or any other team if he feels the money is not worth the health risk to him and his family. He’ll never be Hall of Fame or be considered one of the best in the NFL. He’s proven to be a capable, 10 year NFL veteran. He could easily just move on to a post-NFL career. He isn’t seeking to prove anything to fans who dreamed of even playing college football, let alone QB in the NFL for 10 years.

  17. The Jets have a much harder schedule and have no hope of making the playoffs.
I’ll take Fitz for 7MM, but if he wants 12+, then I’ll take Hoyer for backup money.
Hoyer may be worse, but it doesn’t matter. No playoffs this year and probably not for a few years.

The Jets need to rebuild, and thats more than just QB. They are an old team with many needs.

  18. I rather to support any teams that has honor

Not a big Patriots following in Romania huh?

Fitz outlplayed Hoyer last year, it would be a step backwards for the Jets.

    So they’ll probably do it.

  19. He has no reason to sign with the Jets or any other team if he feels the money is not worth

    That you, Ryan?

  20. When did Fitzpatrick turn into Joe Namath?

Namath wasn’t really that good??? Just good enough to win a super bowl and be the mvp of it. Not to mention he was selected for the hall of fame. Super bowl mvp/hall of fame… What kind of company does that put him with?

Who said anything about him having to prove something to fans? Fitz’s legacy will be that of a mediocre NFL QB. No one here cares how much money he makes or has made, outside of how his contracts pertain to football. Btw, your post reads like you’re his mom.

  22. Why do fans in possibly the greatest city in the world think low balling the leader and QB of their team makes their team look better than their record?

  23. If the Jets sign Hoyer, is he going to start over Smith? IMO Geno is a far better QB than Hoyer who is garbage and not worth more than 3-4 million per yr. With the brutal schedule and no reallly good QB options out there, it is Smith or the draft…

  24. What’s funny is it takes the Texans cutting a guy for the Jets to get leverage on Fitz.

Meanwhile Geno’s sitting in the locker room with a catcher’s mask on to keep his jaw together….

  26. The Jets should sign Easley. The Jets should draft Smith. The Jets should vote for Trump. The Jets should pee in the ladies room. I’ll stop voicing my opinions here as soon as trolls like you and your ilk play by YOUR rules. Clown.

Who the hell is Bruce Petty this board keeps referring to??? I know of a BYRCE Petty, but Bruce??

    ———–
Yes…..thank you Mr. spell-checker. Now, why don’t the Jets give the kid a shot?

  28. Fitzpatrick is no world beater, but he’s better than Hoyer and for that matter better than Manning was at the end of the year for the Broncos. The Broncos could actually contend again this year if they signed him. Is that worth $12-14 million on a one year deal? Yes and he’d probably take it.

  29. Id still rather McGloin and I think he is a FA. Sign McGloin and draft 2 guys. Make it an open comp in camp best 3 make the team then put one on the PS. Fitz and Hoyer arent worth the extra resources be it money or otherwise. Id rather see Geno get a shot then spend more money on Fitz. No more patch work youll never find a QB using other teams cast offs.

  30. Hey, relax! They have Darrelle Revis. The rest is just window dressing and so what if they overpaid him. The Jets really stuck it to the Pats on that one.

  32. Hoyer: save 10 million bucks, have a forgettable season.
Fitz: spend 10 million more, have an intriguing season and have a chance a the playoffs

I don’t understand why a Jets fan (that had a life) would even buy a ticket with Hoyer at the helm.

  33. The Texans are paying Osweiler, what, $18 million –and he’s got virtually nothing to show for his career. Is the Fitz holdup the money or length of contract? He’s certainly worth $10-$15M on a one year deal, maybe two. Somebody’s going to give him $12+ this year, it’s just not clear yet who.

So, I should ignore your thoughts on the Giants, Broncos, etc? And through your logic Pats fans should ignore your instructions to go elsewhere and your comments about there team since you are a rival fan, right? You may be missing the entire point of what goes on here, lol. If all we did was discuss our own teams with it’s own fans things would get real dull real fast around here. For me it is Giants first but I’ve been a football fan for over 50 years and do follow the game beyond my own team as many regulars here do as well.

  37. With Hoyer on the market, the Jets can gain leverage in Fitz negotiations by keeping a big secret…………………

    Hoyer is awful

  38. Didn’t the Jets draft a guy named Richard Petty a couple of ears ago? Give him a chance.

  39. Not to worry Jets fans – Roger Goodell is still, amazingly, the Commissioner

Last time this happened he coaxed Brett Favre out of retirement and sent him to the Jets

Perhaps this time it’ll be Peyton? With TWO Mannings in NY? (Sorry, New Jersey)

Don’t laugh – Goodell knows no boundaries when it comes to trying to give the Jets an advantage

  40. All you people dissing Namath have obviously never seen him play. He had s howitzer for an arm, He might not have the completion % but rules were much different then. You could mug receivers and offensive linemen couldn’t use their hands to hold. H was a great quarterback,

  41. This guy ripped off the Bills and now is looking to do the same to the Jets. An AFC East killer this guy is… Probably getting a side check from Belicheat.

EXACTLY THIS! Fitz was the reason Carson Palmer was able to tell the Bengals to stuff it. Carson had $50+M in the bank in cash based on Fitz’s financial planning. I’m sure Fitz has plenty of cash to never have to work again if he doesn’t want to, and with the current air of player safety, it wouldn’t shock me if Fitz says ‘I’ll play for $X, any less and I’ll go sit at home with my wife and kids.’

Fitz doesn’t need the Jets or the NFL. The Jets need Fitz or comparable production and the NFL needs competent QBs.

  43. Fitz had a great year and imploded in the playoffs
With the WR tandom and adding Forte they could be pretty good with a decent QB. Fitz should lower his expectations a bit and they could be a force. The window is closing on all of them. Hoyer better then Geno Smith? Really? If I’m Geno….I’m looking elsewhere

  44. Mr Hoyer, that 303 area code coming in on your phone is John Elway. Take the call. Broncos win, Jets back in control, and 49ers continue to melt down.
