Mario Williams promises “the best attitude” he’s ever had

AP

Defensive end Mario Williams joined the Dolphins this offseason after a 2015 season with the Bills that featured complaints from and about him.

Williams wasn’t happy with the way he was used on defense in Buffalo and members of the team weren’t happy with the effort that Williams put forth on a weekly basis. Williams said earlier this offseason that he expects the defense in Miami to be more to his liking and this week he promised that his attitude won’t be an issue in 2016.

“The No. 1 thing that you can definitely look forward to [from me] is attitude,” Williams said, via the team’s website. “I think any year, no matter what happens previous, you can’t look at the future or anything like that, but you can handle right now. And my biggest thing, every day I wake up is going to be the best attitude I’ve ever had. And with attitude, everything is going to follow. I know for sure I’m going to be out there humming 100 miles per hour and it’s going to be full attitude.”

With Williams, Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh up front, there’s reason to think the Dolphins will be better up front under new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Of course, there have been reasons to think the Dolphins would be better heading into the last few seasons and the results have been uniformly disappointing once the games began so talk will only go so far in Miami this time around.

  1. The Dolphins are the ultimate prove it on the field team. They’ve been nothing but aggressive the last few off seasons with no tangible results.

  2. I’m think Williams will have a bounce back year in a defense that fits him. At least he won’t be abusing our O line like he has the last few years

  3. “every day I wake up is going to be the best attitude I’ve ever had”

Kind of sounds like a child who has an upcoming event that his parents threatened he wouldn’t be able to attend if he doesn’t start behaving correctly.

  4. Without a serious bolstering of the LB corps, having a nasty group of lineman doesn’t do a lot of good, as we saw last year. Adding to the backfield won’t do a lot either. Need aggressive, sure-tackling LBs or its more of the same…

  5. Williams wasn’t the only defensive player who was not happy with the defensive change in Buffalo last season, he’s just the biggest name so he gets the most coverage.

Of all the changes that have been made this off season, fans should be most excited about the coaching staff. From all accounts, it finally looks like the dolphins have a head coach and staff who understands football, understands how to use the talent and hopefully won’t be so predictable.

  6. To bad he won’t see the playoffs with this team. He goes from one team to another with no proven QB with a bunch of butt hurt fans

  7. So sad a 100 million dollar contract from Buffalo wasn’t motivation enough. There are thousands of people who would play NFL ball for 50k year, let alone 50k per quarter. Sad how many plays he took off last year. If he wasn’t agreeable to the new style of spdefense, be a professional and give it your all every play like your supposed to. Tanked his play in Houston also, phins can have him.

He probably will have a better year than last, because the phins will play him strictly as D-end. Dude didn’t want to have any other responsibilities other than teeing off on the QB every play. Wants to take the easy road.

  8. Thats to bad because you see Mario you are whats called a PROFESSIONAL player therefore you should give 100 percent regardless of what cards the coaches deal you….the amount of money you are being paid should and would remind any player and given the situation again theres no doubt in my mind you would go right back to half speed again ..its just a matter of time……

  9. “Now that I gave up on my teammates last year, let down the team that paid me $100 million, and forced my way out of town because I couldn’t get my way, and now that I get to play in the exact type of defense I want, I promise to actually start trying!”

Cool. Way to be an accountable professional.

  10. “With Williams, Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh up front, there’s reason to think the Dolphins will be better up front under new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.”

Actually, no there not reason to think they’ll be better up front. Wake is coming off a torn achillies, so it’s foolish to believe that his explosion will be just as good as its always been. Having Suh for the whole season is no different than last year. And they swapped out Vernon for Williams, even though Vernon had as many combined sacks and QB hits over the last 8 games of last year as Mario Williams has had in the last 2 full seasons. They are clearly older and worse on the d-line than they were last season (before Wake got hurt of course).

And the fact that Williams has to make such a big point to say his attitude won’t be a problem shows you exactly what kind of a guy he is. When things start to go south (and they always seem to at some point in Miami) he will pack it in and quit just like he has his entire career.

  11. When someone plays like he’s focused on the check instead of the job, it’s a VERY difficult habit to break. Personally, I think that the combination of Williams & Suh can be biggest failures in league history, unless they BOTH decide to expend their talent & energy on the field, not on South Beach.

  12. Well, good luck to Mario.

His having to come out and say it indicates that he is at least aware he has a problem, and you know the old saying: admitting you have a problem is the first step.

  13. his own old defensive coach in philly didn’t want him ,that speaks volumes about attitude

  14. “With Williams, Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh up front, there’s reason to think the Dolphins will be better up front under new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.”

Why is that exactly? Vernon > Williams and Wake is coming off an Achilles at 34. The biggest defensive improvement that team could make is to have an offense that doesn’t rank 30th in TOP and 27th in PPG but of course once again they are focusing on the opposite side of the ball

  15. I can’t stand Manziel – he’s an enabled lowlife who only escapes prison time because of his daddy’s wealth and political ties.

However at the same time, as someone who can’t stand the Denver Donkeys I’d love to see Von Miller extend his defiance of Lord Elways offseason program by joining his buddy Manziel in his ‘escapades’. A great way to watch a divisional rival implode on & off the field.

  16. Yeah, I’m sure his attitude will be “great”, until something doesn’t go his way. Then he will pout like a little baby and quit on his teammates.

I still expect him to have a rebound season though, because he will probably be motivated to prove some people wrong. At least for a little while anyway, and it probably won be every game that he gives full effort, but certain games and certain plays maybe. He’s not the type that gives all out effort 100% of the time. That’s just not his style.
And all he can do is bull rush. If he’s not bull rushing, he’s totally useless.

His above statements confirm that he quit on the Bills last year though. I mean, it’s not like that wasn’t completely obvious before, just by watching the tape. I honestly don’t understand why Rex didn’t glue his a** to the bench last year…
If 100 MILLION isn’t enough to motivate you, then I don’t know what is.

  17. Man he sounds almost as bright as Hillary in the statement at the bottom. The 06 draft was awful.

Man he sounds almost as bright as Hillary in the statement at the bottom. The 06 draft was awful. There, I fixed that for you.

  19. idk he did better than well the first 3 years in buffalo, as did that whole D-Line when he arrived. Rex came in and we saw every single player on the line regress. I get it though, you have to play, you have to go 100%, but forwhatever reason they just didnt buy in. we know those players can produce, and we know rex’s scheme can produce, but for whatever reason it just didnt mesh.

We rag on Mario for last season but what about darius and hughes aye?

I think this old dline of wake and mario and suh will be pretty good in miami. they seem hungry.

The dolphins have gone 20 YEARS without a playoff win.

    They are a broken organization.

Not true. Used to be a Colts fan, and still remember losing to Jay Fiedler in a playoff game where the best kicker in history missed another playoff fg-Vanderjagt.

Williams got drafted in 2006. You aren’t going to see anything different now.

  21. Defensive end (Von Miller) won the AFC championship by smacking down Tom Brady and then the that same position won the Super Bowl. If Wake gets healthy Mario could have a big year.

  22. It’s been quite a while since the Dolphins were relevant in the postseason. That said, it’s been not nearly as long as it has been for the Bengals. And neither team looks to be relevant again this season.

  23. Real pros don’t have to make statements like this. They prove it every season and every game.

I rounded up to 20. Close enough for a Sunday in the off season

  25. Fins have been so bad that their Superbowl or playoff game is trying just to beat the Patriots in the regular season. I think they have beaten the Patriots the last 3 out of 5 times.

  26. Jus watched film of jakeem grant and thought he’d be a nice late pick or undrafted gem for mia and jus found out we bringing him in for a visit. Yeeeeees . I know that was of topic jus nice to know the brass is finally using their eyes and on point with the fans

  27. I think he may very well have a good season work Miami, especially since their new coordinator doesn’t have a lot of experience; so they’ll probably want to run a base 4-3 and keep rtp things pretty simple. Buffalo will probably run the ball to disrupt the pass rush and work the flats to prey on his unwillingness to drop into coverage. He’ll be good but I’m not gonna be worried about the fins untiI they can stop our defense #GoBills

  28. Mario Williams has made sooo much money – good for him – but really, he’s gonna have a positive attitude?

C’mon man! Just play the game at the highest level. That’s how they pay you.

  29. Right up until they’re like, Mario, you actually have to try on this play….and the next one…then he’ll be like, “These coaches are stupid.”

  30. Do yall even follow the Dolphins we didn’t even win the offseason shut the hell up. We took a different approach and yall still talk trash. To the person that said it’s the same defense no its not

  31. Bad bad decision for Mia to let Vernon go over soon to be 31 y.o Mario, who played like a struggling 4th round rookie last year…
Even in his best year, he would put together 3-4 games with 2-3 sacks and disappear too frequently.

The one clutch play he actually made was The Billsupset over GB where he strip sacked Rogers… Other then that, very inflated stats… I can’t front, he is still very good against the run

  32. Mario never panned out in Houston or Buffalo so why should he become a star with Miami? Former # 1 pick should have had a better career!

  33. The old Dolphins farts that went undefeated won fewer games than the Patriots the year the Giants beat them in the super bowl. I hope that someone goes undefeated before all those old geezers are dead!
