Jon Gruden thinks the Eagles may have too many quarterbacks

Nobody loves anything as much as Jon Gruden loves quarterbacks.

But the former NFL coach and ESPN analyst does think it’s possible to have too much of a good thing.

Via Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Gruden seemed worried that using the second pick in the 2016 NFL Draft on Carson Wentz (or Jared Goff if that’s not who the Rams take) would give the Eagles an overabundance.

“The problem right now I see in Philadelphia is they have too many quarterbacks to be friendly with,” Gruden said. “How are they going to distribute any reps and get anybody ready when you got Sam Bradford making $18 million, you’ve got Chase Daniel who’s a backup making $7 million, and now you have the No. 2 pick in the draft?

“I don’t know how you’re going to get these guys reps and get them ready, but [coach] Doug Pederson will have to answer that.”

Of course, that assumes Pederson has all that much say in this operation, as de facto General Manager Howie Roseman has already reversed a previously held opinion about trading up to trade up aggressively, to create the exact logjam to which Gruden refers.

But Gruden’s concern was primarily about the time it will take for Pederson to install a new offense, and how to divide up practice time so anyone can be effective in it now or in the future.

“When you look at the amount of reps you can have with your team, that number is substantially less than it was five years ago with this new collective bargaining agreement,” Gruden said. “You’ve got a new head coach who’s running a new offensive system — he better get it in there quickly, because the games are about to start — so who’s going to get the reps and who’s going to get the leftovers?

“You don’t have time to get three guys reps. You just don’t. If you do, you’re not running a real sophisticated offense. It’s hard to get one guy to go today, let alone two. So there could be a trade. I don’t want to start any rumors in Philadelphia, but if they do draft a quarterback with all they have invested in him, I’m sure they’ll want to get him as many reps as possible, and that’s going to make somebody I think unhappy and perhaps expendable.”

Of course, Chase Daniel won’t need as many reps to do what Pederson wants, since he’s been doing in the last three years in Kansas City alongside Pederson. That’ll allow him to play stable pony for Wentz if necessary, but at three years and $21 million, that’s an expensive pony ride.

  1. Nothing would be happier than to see Jalen Ramsey get picked before Dallas is on the clock.

Philly or San Diego make it happen!

  2. Sam Bradford’s days in Philadelphia are limited. Too expensive – nice guy – overrated – under delivered since coming into the NFL.

  3. Chase is still cheaper than Bradford for 2 years. Especially if you can flip him for a high pick.

I swear I remember Gruden having 5 QBs on the roster when training camp opened when he coached Tampa.

  4. The Eagles are a train wreck, as per usual.

They’ll win a game against the Giants, and their fans will treat that as their Superbowl win, as per usual.

Hey yo Richie….. you mad bro?

  5. It sounds like Jon Gruden has been developing some kind of virtual reality gear for use by young QBs who are learning the ropes and wants the Eagles to try it out.

  6. If I live to be 100, I’ll never figure out why anyone care what Gruden thinks – about anything but especially about quarterbacks because he never did develop one in the pros. QBs were not his strong suit. He went through one retread after another before ESPN inflicted him on an unwary public.

  7. #1 Maybe Pederson is in over his head and will keep all 3. That will mean that the #3 (Chase Daniels) gets no reps, since they will obviously give them to the newly drafted QB.

#2 On the other hand – Its more likely they trade Sam Bradford.
Maybe to the Jets. That would take care of the Jets QB problems for a while. And it would save a lot of cap space, which the Eagles GM (Roseman) has done an excellent job of this off season.

I consider #2 far more likely than #1.

  8. Does anybody actually pay attention to what Jon Gruden says? Don’t get me wrong, I would love to live that man’s life, but come on… He’s been nothing more than goofy catchphrases since he stopped coaching.

  9. This is a pretty stupid thing.

All teams have three QB’s in camp.
The third QB will get less reps.

Remind me again when Gruden made a QB better?

  10. Hard to argue with Grudens logic on this one but then Howie spent the last year “being groomed” on “how to build a team” while doing every thing he could to make sure Kelly woud fail at it in Lurie’s eyes. We should all be “amazed” at the job he is doing, I mean, wasn’t the gist of Kelly’s demise, that he was blowing up the team and creating uncertainty amongst the players during free agency so that they couldn’t “trust” him anymore? Wasn’t it Kelly who rediculously overpaid free agen!ts and extensions??? Oh, but wait, in spite of it looking like Howie must have attended the same school of rebuilding as Kelly, we are expected to look at “the genious” of Howie’s free agency and draft moves. Well what do you think, 10 games this year? I mean, we are “rebuilding” in Howie’s image aren’t we? Looks like Pederson is the perfect puppet in this scenario.

  11. Of course they will trade one of these QBs. Much ado about nothing. So much hand wringing over a decision that the Eagles know they must make. What is with the press and statements of the obvious?

  12. No way Elway trades for Bradford. He’s making 18 per. Elway has made it clear he’s not gonna overpay a mediocre QB. With the exception of last year.

  13. Bradford has had at least one serious injury — requiring surgery and months of rehab and downtime — to each of his four limbs going back to high school, in addition to numerous smashups causing rib and back ailments.

There is literally no way he could land without re-injuring multiple body parts.
Even Wile E. Coyote couldn’t possibly last 20-plus games this season in Bradford’s cleats; two solid contenders to keep the pocket warm a game or few here and there is the cost of doing business with Bradford, not overkill.

  14. Mark my words…Sam Bradford is the Alex Smith of this generation. Once he finds a good situation, with a team that can pass block and competent receivers, he’ll have some success.

  15. I don’t think the Eagles are trying to trade Bradford this season but a new team would only be responsible for 7M of the 18m he will earn. The Eagles already gave him the other 11m when he signed.

  16. Every team has three, and some have four or more QBs on their roster during camp. How do they manage? The horrors. Seriously, Boy Genius is getting alzheimer’s. The rookie QB in Philly will not play a single snap in 2016.

  17. The Eagles would eat 11 mil this year on Bradfofd, So he can still be in play. Elway tried his hardest to pay a less then mediocre QB for more years and a little less money, before the Texans saved his butt. The only reason he didn’t is he couldn’t fit under the cap.

Yeah, if they block to the point where he doesn’t ever get touched at all. Dude could injure himself taking his own pads off.

  19. I still don’t think the Eagles are picking a QB at #2. I think it’s a smokescreen arranged with the Browns during the trade. They probably agreed to appear to want a QB so nobody else tries to trade up and get one in front of the Browns.

If having Bradford could “take care of” anybody’s QB problems for a while, why wouldn’t the Eagles keep him?

So you think the Eagles were worried the Rams would actually trade back down out of the #1 spot? Then would it not make more sense to pretend they don’t want a QB?

  22. I am pretty sure that the Eagles have always had 3 QB’s. As a lifelong Eagles fan, I know that we have carried at least three QB’s for the last 20 years — going all the way back to when McNabb took over for Pederson. When McNabb was our QB we had him, Detmer and Feeley. Then it was McNabb, Feeley and Blake. Then in 2005 it was 4 QB’s! McNabb, Detmer, Hall and McMahon. Then 2006 it was 4 again, with McNabb, Detmer, Feeley and Garcia!

This is a trend on the Eagles, guys. We did this with McNabb, Kolb and Vick. We did it with Vick, Foles and Edwards. We did it with Foles, Sanchez and Barkley. We did it LAST YEAR with Bradford, Sanchez and Stephen Morris.

  23. I think Monday Night Football has too many broadcasters. They should get rid of Gruden and Tirico.
Then let Larry The Cable Guy call the games. That way no one will fall asleep.

  24. Trading Bradford to Denver would be hilarious given it’d give the Broncos the same 1-2 punch the Eagles had last season. But that seems unlikely given the Broncos balked at paying Osweiler $18 million so would probably also think that was more than Bradford is worth.

  25. Chase Daniel will get next to no reps. He was brought in to be a coach on the field. In a time when coaches are restricted in talking to their players thanks to the CBA, there is no such restrictions on players talking to other players. Chase Daniel has been teaching the playbook to his team mates since he arrived in Philly. It was a smart, albeit expensive, move by the Eagles.

  26. Roseman agrees. He might not pick a QB, but he also said he was making these moves for the future. So even if he drafts Wentz or Goff, they can learn from a pro like Sam Bradford this year, see how he prepares himself day in and day out, then the following year have an open competition. If the new QB wins out, they let Bradford go and Chase Daniels is the backup. Jon Gruden was a decent coach, but personnel woes are the reason he’s a TV personality today. He knows his X’s and O’s, but maybe not an expert on the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s.

    ===========================
No the only thing everyone is sure about is that the Rams are taking a QB at #1. Especially if they think the Eagles are taking on at #2, they won’t trade down. If the Eagles keep everyone thinking (up until their actual pick) that they are going with QB…and they don’t. There will be a mad dash for #3-7 to shop their picks to another team wanting whichever QB is left. It would make sense for the Browns to tell the Eagles to hold their hand close to their chest until the draft so that there is less of a chance for a team to move up and steal their guy. The Browns probably think their QB (Wentz) is going to fall to them at #8. The only team they have to worry about taking a QB in front of them is San Fran. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade with the Cowboys to move up 2 spots if this plays out this way. They’ve traded with the Cowboys in the past and probably feel comfortable that they can do it again.

  28. This is a made up problem, even if the Eagles don’t deal Bradford.

As the starter, he will get most of the reps. Daniel is a backup who will get less. The QB they pick at 2 is being groomed over the long term and will get fewer, while steeping himself in the playbook and carrying the clipboard. He doesn’t need a lot of reps.

This is standard procedure for teams that carry three QBs on their roster.

  29. No way Elway trades for Bradford. He’s making 18 per. Elway has made it clear he’s not gonna overpay a mediocre QB. With the exception of last year.

Sam’s salary this year is 7 million. for a #1 pick, the eagles will eat his signing bonus, which was 11 million. you would make a great sports blogger, no research and big mouth.

  30. Can we wait until the end of the draft and free agency to see how the rosters shape out before making assertions. It has been reported by multiple sources that Bradford will probably seek a trade. If a trade is imminent then Gruden’s opinion is moot.

  31. They need to dump Bradford but he’s overpaid even if you discount the signing bonus. He can’t stay healthy Denver wouldn’t pay him 2/24 and definitely won’t give a draft pick for him making that money.

  32. If I live to be 100, I’ll never figure out why anyone care what Gruden thinks – about anything but especially about quarterbacks because he never did develop one in the pros. One of those “retreads” was Rich Gannon.

  33. “Sam’s salary this year is 7 million. for a #1 pick, the eagles will eat his signing bonus, which was 11 million. ”

Denver’s pick is the last one in the 1st round. That’s really not as valuable as one would think if it’s just described as a “#1 pick”.

    It’s indistinguishable from a high second-round pick.

  34. whisperd says:

“Denver’s pick is the last one in the 1st round. That’s really not as valuable as one would think if it’s just described as a “#1 pick”.

    ——————-

Well, considering that the Eagles already have a high first round pick, and have no second round pick, having a late first rounder that’s “indistinguishable from a high second” isn’t such a bad thing now is it?

  35. Gruden makes sense…. Its not just a third QB like people are saying .. its the number 2 pick in the draft that the eagles just traded a lot to get. He’s getting reps. Chase could play so needs them too. I just don’t see a way with a new system you can have this set of 3 QB’s.

I think Bradford to Denver is the best solution. Denver gets a guy who is better than Manning was last year and fits what they do. They also then don’t have to add a first round salary to their cap. The eagles get a late first which i imagine they trade back to gather more picks. This is a win win.

That being said, as an Eagles fan, i’m not thrilled about Wentz or Howie for that matter ..

  36. Most of you people, criticizing peeps, are more clueless than them.

    A. The Broncos aren’t trading for Bradford. They are already pressed against the cap and have no ability to add in another 12 million in cap room.

    B. Three quarterbacks IS quite common. Paying 1/5 of your cap to a consortium of 3 qb’s without ANY of them being a proven commodity… that isn’t. Having 30 million tied up in the qb position this year would give the Eagles the MOST amount of any NFL Team tied up at the position, with nothing but unknowns.

    C. Trading up to get Wentz (or Goff) isn’t a terrible idea, IF that pick hits and you have a franchise back. But to trade away 6 picks to pick up a “potential” qb on a team that needs depth in many positions with 25 million already committed to two qb’s on the roster, is illogical at best.

    D. I guess Philly fans will just have faith in all the success that Roseman has had in this league.

  37. @ igornathanhiggers says:

“Nothing would be happier than to see Jalen Ramsey get picked before Dallas is on the clock. Philly or San Diego make it happen!”

Seriously? Because Dallas is absolutely slated to take Ramsey, right? Child, please. You haters are so predictable and inept.

Dallas will end up most likely trading the 4th pick REGARDLESS of whether or not Ramsey is there as long as the trade offers make sense. SD will likely take Tunsil anyway, as he is a consensus top 3 pick anyway, and some have him as the best overall player in the draft. If SD does take Ramsey and Tunsil falls to the Cowboys, Tunsil may draw even more compensation for Dallas as a trade. Dominant OT’s are very valuable in this league, and Dallas makes out regardless. Many teams are in need of a plug and play Rt Tackle (including Dallas), but Dallas has Free and Chaz Green there, so they likely trade with another team for Tunsil if SD passes on him.

Dallas has a likely trade partner in the Dolphins who have nobody at RB at the moment. They let their young RB walk for more $, and they have struck out so far in FA with RB’s. Elliott will be very tempting for them, and as long as they offer up pick #13, #42 and #73 to move up to pick #4, they can have Zeke.

Tunsil, Bosa, Ramsey, Elliot, and Buckner are all possibilities for SD, and then 4 of those 5 are potentials for Dallas. Sorry to disappoint you bro, but Dallas makes out regardless. Get used to it.

  38. @ gomybirdsgo says:

“I think Bradford to Denver is the best solution.”

I highly doubt Denver picks up Bradford’s 2 year, $22 million guaranteed contract. Why would they do that if they weren’t going to pay Kaepernick a similar amount – it was already reported Kaepernick would have to take much less than his 11.9 million to land in Denver. Bradford is not much of an improvement over Kaepernick anyway, IMO. It won’t happen at full contract price.

Secondly, Bradford is not much of an improvement over Sanchez, either. Bradford has a history of injuries, and besides, Bradford is the slated starter in Philly, and gives Philly the best chance to win.

It is likely Philly drafts Wentz, and they give him clipboard duties for two years until Bradford is off the books, as he is also guaranteed $11 million next year. Unless Bradford has a stellar year (unlikely), nobody will want to trade for the second year contract either. Maybe Philly ultimately cuts Bradford next year, but either way they pay him $11 million. Philly made a big mistake signing Bradford to that amount, as well as paying Chase Daniel what they paid him. Now they will have to pay Wentz quite a bit to sit and learn.

Oh well. I am a Cowboys fan. I am certainly not upset seeing Philly and Washington spinning their wheels by spending big $ on big contracts and likely not getting commensurate results in return.

  39. So howie takes a chance on kelly, kelly just cuts djax, gone are foles, mccoy, and draft busto in the second round, kelly needed a qb, enter bradford, does ok….Oline sucked to a level in the first three games last year, that I was at my lowest point as a 50 year fan…thats what friggin happened.

So any moron knows you need a oline first, d line second. romo has had good lines, and at times great lines and big receivers…. YOU assemble a pro bowl line, you win. romo is the only toad that could screw that up….foles would be a super bowl champ if he played BEHIND THAT O-LINE.

The center and both guards have to go , and we need a tackle to back up mac daddy. 4 great O -lineman ….thats how far away we are from competing for a superbowl…

Would love to see our D COORDINATED take over has co head coach. He is our best chance …so glad we have him.

  40. I guess that’s one way to do it!
Philly’s theory is to sign EACH AND EVRY QB so other teams just can’t use them against Philly.
Who said Howie Roseman is not a genious!

  41. whispersd says:

And good ol’ RICH, threw 5 INTs in the super bowl, FIVE!!
    Not good Jon, NOT GOOD!

Albeit, at the time (of the 5INT superbowl), Jon, the former coach of the raidas, had been traded to the Bucs. So it did help him, just not the way he thought it would!

  42. I really didn’t think Bradford was the problem last year. He had two marginal backup guards starting in front of him – the o-line was in shambles all season. Not to mention no starting caliber RB to speak of, and WR’s that dropped every ball thrown their way. He was accurate most of the time and remained relatively healthy.

Having said that, there’s also the very real concern that Bradford has only ever made it through one season in the NFL without missing time due to injury. He has never won above .500 in a season, never won a playoff game, and was contemplating retirement just two seasons ago.

Can you build around that for the long haul? Sure, he’s talented. But do you have enough confidence that this guy can be your long term QB? They have far too many holes and not enough superstar talent for them to truly compete for a Lombardi for at least another 2-3 seasons – and that’s being optimistic. I don’t know if Bradford has the staying power to remain healthy for 3-5 seasons, and I really don’t think this team will be ready for a run until then.

He would be a much stronger fit for a team that is genuinely built to win now, like the Broncos. If I were Elway, I’d trade a 1st rounder for the guy. He could bring a team built like that another championship. He’s a good QB, but he needs to have the talent around him, and he needs it now. He won’t be the kind of guy playing into his mid to late 30’s.
