Report: Broncos called about Sam Bradford, but price was too high

AP

At one level, Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford going public (through his agent) with a desire to be traded could make it harder to force a deal, since it reduces Philly’s leverage by making the whole thing a mess. At a deeper level, perhaps Bradford’s agent has decided that taking a public stand is the best way to soften things up for a trade.

Case in point: The Eagles apparently have opened negotiations by taking a hard line.

Mike Klis of 9News.com reports, citing a “prominent NFL source” (I won’t speculate on who that may be, but I can’t stop the audience from doing it) that the Broncos reached out to the Eagles about a trade for Bradford, and that the asking price was too high.

It’s important to note that the Eagles didn’t laugh and hang up the phone. They articulated a price. It was just too much.

So what’s the best way to force the price down? Back Philly into a corner by taking the fight public, perhaps.

The high road sometimes doesn’t get to the preferred destination. Eventually, the low road becomes the only option. That’s quite possibly why Condon has decided to tell the world that Bradford wants out — and it’s quite possibly why Bradford is now committed to staying away from voluntary workouts.

The question becomes whether the Eagles will stay on the high road, or whether they’ll resort to the low road, too. It may not be the smoothest way to head into the 2016 season, but it may be the best way to remind everyone in the locker room that the days of getting a one-way ticket out of town by not “buying in” are over.

Lost in all of this shuffle is that the broncos still need a QB, lmao, and please dont tell me they have sanchize.

How is it lost in the shuffle that the Broncos still need a QB when this article is specifically about them inquiring about the price of a QB that wants a trade?

  2. The eagles have already paid him 11 million. That aren’t giving him away for free. He may not like it, but he will suit up and play for the birds. Its in his best interests.

  3. It pains me to say this but with their defense it really doesn’t matter who their quarterback is. The Broncos defense will keep them in every game. All they need is a game manager at quarterback and they will be fine. I personally hope they ride out their season with Sanchez( not a game manager ) at least then the Raiders will have a better chance to win the West and finally get back to the playoffs…

  4. The low road taken last year by Dogra and Adrian Peterson didn’t didn’t get him traded.

  5. Not really sure why this is so hard, maybe Bradford needs a new start although with a new coach things will be different, still don’t know why Bradford wants out.
Maybe I’m wrong but the few times I’ve seen Daniels play he looked like he might be ready for a team of his own. And the new Boss looks like the old Boss. I think secretly Philly would rather play Daniels and let the new guy sit for a year.
Bradford isn’t the starter he’s the problem.

  6. Fine, sit out and get fined. I’m sure the Eagles won’t mind making some of that money back. He’ll report eventually.

    He has zero leverage.

  8. No way Elway bends for Bradford. Discussions started when we traded wfor Sanchez. Nothings changed on our end. Inquiry was to see if anythings changed on their end. No guarantees. No outrageous contracts. Get people who want to be Broncos and fight it out in camp.

Going to be hard to show more heart than Sanchez. That guy has slept on the couch in Dove Valley. Never seen anyone want it so bad. Comes down to what he does on the field, but gotta loves his desire.

    ____________

He isn’t holding out. He’s just not participating in VOLUNTARY workouts. Not a finable offense.

  10. If I’m the Eagles, I tell him to shut the hell up, or hand him a revised contract that calls for half of what he originally signed for, tell him to sign it and ship him Where ever for a draft pick.

  11. Am I missing something? Didn’t Bradford just sign a new, very generous deal? And before playing a down he’s already asking for a trade? They should tell him they’ll trade him if he cancels his contract.

  12. What is fair considering the Eagles will have to pay 11 million? I think a first round pick in this year’s draft or 2 2nds over the bext two drafts. We r talking about an above average starter.

  13. Bradford has no leverage and only one good leg to stand on,he is 100 million bucks rich for a guy who has played the system not the game, play a full season, produce then demand something mr.bradford!

  14. I really don’t get what the Eagle’s strategy is here. If they were going to draft a QB, why did they give Bradford a huge extension paying him starter money just a few weeks ago ??
I won’t even go into the fact that Chase Daniel is sitting in Philly too.
    What a mess !!!

  15. About as obvious a trade move for two teams as I’ve seen in ages. If you’re Denver, you are dumb to not do this. Pay up, you might win another Super Bowl.

  16. If Bradford would agree to pay back the $11 mill signing bonus he got the Eagles would trade him per his demand. Otherwise show up for the mandatory ota’s and training camp or pay the maximum fines. (those fines WILL NOT be forgiven).

Teams need to start enforcing the fines that the CBA allows for on the players.

  17. .
Philly would have been better served if they had the Bradford trade in place prior to their deal with Cleveland. It’s not as though this drama comes as a surprise.

As far as Denver goes, I have no idea who will be starting at QB, however it’s most likely someone who’s not currently on their roster.
    .

  18. I can’t imagine Philly getting anything better than a low 4th round pick for Sammy. Being a Philly fan, I would like them to get more, but just don’t believe Bradford is worth it. I would take the first offer and run.

  19. “It’s important to note that the Eagles didn’t laugh and hang up the phone. They articulated a price. It was just too much.”

So much for Howie Rosman’s proclamation that Bradford is the starting QB. If he is, you DO hang up the phone.

  20. Oh, thank you God!!!

Of course, I think $1.35 is too much to pay for Bradford. Average, often injured, are you telling me he’s an $11 million upgrade over Mark Sanchez because I don’t think he is.

Quite frankly, you got big questions with all of ’em: Brock, Sanchez, Bradford. $18 million a year for Brock? You go first.

  21. Just imagine the mess Philly would be in if they hadn’t found a sucker to trade for Sanchez.

Philly is one of those franchises that always lucks into to a sucker willing to trade for their trash. Someone will get duped with Bradford. Get tired of teams bailing this ringless franchise out of a jam!

  22. Why anybody would want Bradford is confusing to me. He could never establish a rhythm in Philly, he couldn’t stay healthy in St. Louis. Honestly who wants a glass quarterback how does he have any trade value at all?!

Drafted as a franchise QB, traded for a washing machine. Got his next coach fired and at the first sign of adversity looking to get moved.

  23. And here we go with the Elway horse teeth jokes. Wow, so original. Hey haters, since being GM, Elway has 5 out of 5 AFC West Crowns, 2 SB appearances, 1 ring. How is your GM doing?

Badford, sorry. Really, his only claim to fame was OU and how many years ago was that?????? Exactly!

Ol’ Horse Face knows better than to pay a markup for a medicore QB with a high health risk. He didn’t get into Stanford just because of football.
    —————————

    Yep. There was baseball too.

  25. I don’t understand why Denver just give up a 2nd for him, I know that seems high BUT with an average QB, that team could easily make another run with that D, they only have to pay 7 million and I know the 2nd seems steep like I said but isn’t it worth it given the state of the team? 2nd rounders don’t always pan out and you know you’re getting a guy that can manage the game with that d and currently, that doesn’t exist in Denver at the qb position

  26. At some point, people are going to come to the realization that the price for any “veteran” QB is too high for the Broncos. They simply don’t have the money or the firepower.

Why all these stories about the Broncos sniffing around Kaep and now Bradford is so newsworthy is beyond me…unless it’s a draft smokescreen, which would make total sense.

  27. That’s just John Boy Elway, who spent a long career as a used car salesman. He has to have some BS on his hands, before he can spend a nickle. I kinda hope he has to dance with Sanchez all season long. Let hi feel the bern.

  28. I can’t believe how much attention Bradford gets. He has been a bust since he was drafted. He is so damn fragile until it’s time to sign a big contract. Teams keep writing checks. He’s not worth the time for any team to waste. Stay away from this one Elway!

  29. We want a garbillion draft picks for this dude whose shoulder goes out every year. I hear his agent is a damned genius.

  30. …..in the public eye Bradford is delusional and unprofessional. He has done nothing substantial and been paid MILLIONS. HE ALONE was psid so much money that rookies now are locked into moderate 3 year deals at the beginning of their careers. He needs to just shut up and play andshow everyone why he thinks he’s a superstar.

  31. Why wouldn’t the price be sky high? They haven’t even gotten a chance to try to play the Jets and Broncos against each other yet. If you are going to let him go without attempting to start a bidding war, you may as well ask for more than you think you’ll get

  32. Take a 3rd if you can get it.
Bradford has zero leverage and the Eagles can screw him if he acts like a malcontent. Simply tell his agent if he doesn’t quit complaining he’ll back-up for the year. See what his market is after not playing in 2016. They are on the hook for 11 mil regardless.

It’s in both their interests for Bradford to shut up and play well. It maximizes Bradford’s value in a trade and his future contract.

  33. Conversation must’ve sounded like an episode of Pawn Star

Elway: So how much are you looking to get out of him?

Roseman: How about a 2017 1st round pick, OR a 2017 2nd round pick and a 3rd round of your choice of year?

Elway: How about one of my equipment manager?

Roseman: No sorry, i can’t do that. Chip Kelly would be ashamed of me.

  34. Why should he give back the $11M that the Eagles were dumb enough to give him? That was their mistake, not his. If he was told he would be the long term starter if he played well it’s understandable why he’d want out. But in no way should he let the Eagles out of their dumb mistake.

  35. Sammie wants to be traded because he thinks he should be the franchise QB of the now and the future for a team. I remember feeling the same way when the team I was on drafted a QB and he ended up being week 1 starter in 2010. Suck it up.

    >>>>He didn’t get into Stanford just because of football.

No it was Baseball and his dad was the coach 🙂

  37. Screw Bradford. If he wanted to be involved in a teams long term plans, he should have looked at signing with a team for longer than a 2 year contract, which is really a 1 year contract with a second year team option.

Whats that? Oh…there was no interest in FA, and nobody wanted to offer you more than a prove it contract?

Then what the heck are you complaining about? Good luck with your “demands” Bradford. Personally, I don’t care about the locker room. Let him be a whiny baby. Youre 6 years into your career and have a losing record, and have never won a playoff game. At the first sign of competition (from a 1-AA college QB) you get scared and want to run away.

Good riddance when your year is up Bradford.

  38. Eagles Front office is looking amateurish. Why in the world would you give Sam Bradford a 2yr contract for 18M/yr with much of it guaranteed if they are going to draft a qb in the first round?! If they thought that they would sit Wentz for a year and let Bradford play the entire season then that is naive. The first time Bradford throws a pick or his play dips all of the Eagles fans are going to pressure the team to put Wentz out there. Now Bradford will likely be gone and they will have to eat a portion of his contract. If they hold on to him he will be a headache for them all season long. Roseman will not be much better than Chip when all is said and done.

  39. Good God! The Eagles should just get it over with by sending a 4th Rounder and, worst comes to worst, pay $3-4 million dollars to Bradford while he earns the rest from Denver.

You know how nearly everyone’s agreed that Sam Bradford did this to himself. Well, the Eagles made it no better. If Jeffrey Lurie was willing to waste a then future second rounder on him, why not let him walk and get a compensatory fourth rounder in 2017?

The Eagles likely paid him more than most teams would. How can he move when the Eagles made him too expensive for others?

  40. Yes…The Broncos have made it obvious that they only want low-rent QBs.

    Stay classy Denver.

  41. Broncos see to want everything at cost. They are the Super Bowl Champs but letting the most important position walk and key defensive players they look to be 3rd in their division coming this year.

This trade is a no brainier for a 2nd round pick what Philly traded to 49ers along with Nick Foles.

  42. Zero Games above .500
    Zero Playoff Appearances
    Zero Playoff Wins
    Zero ProBowls

And yet he has been payed well over $100 million dollars for what by all accounts would be considered a below average, mediocre, marginal pro career.

He signed the two year contract. He certainly didn’t have to. He gladly took the money. The Birds front office have been saying for months they feel they need to draft a QB. They clearly have no intention of rushing that development, so Bradford has every single opportunity to not only start, but to prove his doubters wrong. Now he doesn’t want competition?

The stance he is taking makes him look so bad in all of this. It makes him look weak. Dude, go out there and actually accomplish something for once in your pro career.

The Birds don’t have to trade him, nor do they have to give him away for free. I hope they don’t give in to his temper tantrum.

  43. Eagles Management = Keystone Cops. Elway will make this happen AND get the right price. Philly just can’t help itself! LMAO every year at them.

  44. A healthy Bradford would be a Probowl player with the receiving core the Broncos have. I know the birds want two 2nds, but more realistically, they would be good be with a 2 & conditional 4. We need help at wideout as well and Denver needs RB help. Bradford (on a reworded deal) & Ryan Mathews for the last pick in the second rd and a conditional 4th rd pick in 2017. It could be a win win.

  45. Broncos see to want everything at cost. They are the Super Bowl Champs but letting the most important position walk and key defensive players they look to be 3rd in their division coming this year.
    ————————————————————————
HAHAHA you have no idea what you are talking about.

  46. This would be the 4th time this offseason the eagles are dealing from a point with no leverage.

    I’m not in.
Don’t give this clown what he wants.
Set your price and don’t waiver.

Worst case scenario, he holds out and you get all your cash back.
Best case scenario, Denver realizes he’s the cheapest and best chance at getting back to the playoffs.

I usually side with players, but Sham Glassford is a spineless pantywaste.

  47. Whether Bradford deserves the money he’s getting or has gotten is another story (he doesn’t).

Bradford, in all likelihood, was mislead by the team prior to signing his contract. He was probably told he’s their guy going forward and they didn’t view him as a placeholder. So assuming management lied to him, I have no problem with his requesting a trade.

The Eagles screwed up giving Bradford a large contract with plans to draft a QB. While Bradford will end up reporting to the Eagles camp, he’ll play lousy because he doesn’t want to be there and his teammates know he doesn’t want to be there. That leaves Daniels and Goff/Wentz while your expensive QB gets paid to hold a clipboard. Chase Daniels is trash. Their best option is to trade Bradford for whatever they can get (it’s best to eliminate the distraction as soon as possible) and start Goff/Wentz.

  48. Whatever, Bradford. Don’t let door hit your ass on the way out. Hold out…don’t…don’t care. You won’t be here next year anyway…

  49. “Iow cannot re-iterate it enouf, S-ham Brad-fword is ouwr starting qwarterback, that is that – sheesh! And, by the way, it’ looks like you have too much tuna fish on your plate, Gil Faison!”

    – Howie Roseman

  50. Because the Eagles FO didn’t think they had a snowball’s chance in hell to get up to the top of the draft. But 13 became 8, got an extra 3rd round pick and then there was ammunition.

  51. On behalf of the citizens of Philadelphia I would like to apologize to the rest of the world for the amount of attention that has been given to one Sam “Sammy Sleeves” Bradford. We recognize that he is not of the caliber to warrant said attention and would like to point out that this whole situation was created when Chip Kelly traded a 2nd round pick AND a starting QB for Sam Bradford. Don’t hate on Philly this is all Chip Kelly’s fault.

Also Sam Bradford has crazy eyes.

    ——————————————

Exactly how strongly are you saying “your my guy” with a two year contract?

  53. Sam Bradford has no leverage. The Eagles will have 3 QBs and not enough reps to go around. At voluntaries they can give reps to the rookie and Daniel and when he shows up he can get the reps as the current starter.

I think the Eagles would LOVE for him to hold out and better yet retire because then he gets fined or better yet pays back his signing bonus.

Serious question for PFT reporters: How much cap room would the Eagles have to clear to trade Bradford? I don’t understand how it works but the way I see it now they are at the cap right now so trading Bradford would put them well over.

  54. Since when do the Broncos care about cheating the salary cap?

If Bradford is too expensive, who the hell can they sign?

Most importantly of all, will we see an AFC team (besides the Ravens) win a SB this decade WITHOUT cheating?!

    These are questions.

  55. By the end of the year, Bradford will be backing up a rookie.

The dumbest thing he can do is sit out, and not learn the new offense being implemented.

Lets face it…Bradford has peaked at average. Some rook is going to come in, get 75% of the snaps all preseason, and will look 100% better than Bradford (with no injuries to boot) by week 6 at the latest.

Bradford is afraid of competing against a 1-AA QB that has never been in the NFL before. That’s embarrassing. That certainly isn’t a mentality that inspires confidence in his leadership abilities. How many OL will stand in the huddle and look at Bradford and just shake their head?
