Jameis Winston on losing weight: You have to show the guys you’re working

Quarterback Jameis Winston’s physical condition has been the talk of Buccaneers minicamp this week with wide receiver Mike Evans asking where Winston’s belly went since lest season and cornerback Johnthan Banks chiming in that Winston looks like he should be running drills with the rest of the secondary.

“This guy was fat last year,” Banks said, via Pewter Report. “He came back looking like a DB. You can tell Jameis worked his tail off.”

Banks went on to praise Winston’s leadership, saying “he’s going to be one of those Peyton Manning-type guys” and Winston pointed to his weight loss as a way he wants to help set the right example for everyone on the roster.

“As a quarterback, you have to show these guys that you’re working,” Winston said. “I didn’t want to come back and have them say, ‘Oh, Jameis looks the exact same.’ I had to give them something to talk about, right?”

Winston added that if you look good then “you play good.” If Winston’s play improves along with his appearance, the Bucs will be pretty happy with where things are headed with their franchise quarterback.

  1. Fat Josh Freeman was the 2nd coming of Big Ben, he really was – he had a ton of 4th quarter comebacks, he could drag tacklers turning sacks into first downs, he was durable, etc. Then one year he came to camp down about 40lbs and he wasn’t the same, he was in great shape, but no longer could take a beating, no longer could drag tacklers, no longer did he truly make big plays.

Skinny Josh Freeman made me not care in the least about the shape the QB is in because Fat Josh Freeman was a vastly superior player.

  2. If he keeps his head he has all the talent to be a great player in this league. Let the past be the past be the past.

  3. The Bucs are winning that awful division. Just don’t draft Eli Apple who can only cook disgusting grease filled food and tempt Winston off the wagon.

  4. DAMN! All that talk about Jameis being the next JaWalrus Russell is all coming true!!! Hold on, what? He’s made a probowl, is a team leader, and is in shape? Nevermind.

  5. He’s listening to somebody ……. and becoming a real franchise QB. May not leave Luck and Mariota in the dust but will be right in there with them and 2 or 3 others.

  6. What dorsiaonafriday said.

And aside from a developmental RG…time to turn focus to defense tomorrow…and the day after..and day after that.

    Owe it to McCoy

  7. 4-thousand yard rookie season with both starting receivers and TE injured part of the year. Emulating the QB’s that he maybe didn’t deserve seeing at the Pro Bowl. Working hard to be the team example.

    Gotta like it, Bucs fan.

  9. As a Saints fan, I WISH Jameis Winston had JaMarcus Russell’s work ethic but he doesn’t. Last year, if all the Winston naysayers were reading reports from non-team sources, they would have seen that he was WORKING hard to be a leader and that carried on through the season. Before EVERY game last season, WINSTON would shake the hand of EVERY player and team personnel and thank them for three contribution to the team. DANG, I wish Winston wasn’t WORKING hard to be a leader and great player!

  10. As a Carolina fan, I am happy to see this guy putting in effort and seemingly not becoming the guy people feared he might. Its only been one year, but best to luck to Tampa and their fans.

  11. I used to think this guy was the next Jamarcus Russell but he’s turning out like a decent Guy. Never hear about him, shows up to work in the best shape of his life, and he’s a die hard competitor. I can root for him.

  12. Winston had a rough start to the season last year but he quickly adjusted and by mid-season he was a legit QB.

A lot of people (myself included) are due to eat some crow on this guy. I thought it was clear as day that he was bust-bound but I’m a big enough man to say that I was wrong, that Winston showed he belonged on the field, and now he’s showing that he’s putting in the work.

  13. Good for him; always important that your team leaders get in front & lead. But “if you look good, you play good?” Reminds me of “Looking good, Jameis!” “Feeling good, Billy Ray!”

  14. “if you look good, you play good”

    Same as

    “Dress for success”

Winston isn’t just in shape. He’s been doing many things off the field…going to schools and reading/speaking to children, supporting charities.

And he hasn’t been making a show of it, trying to get the media behind him. You actually have to dig to find out what he does…so he’s not a glory hound. It’s not a PR stunt.

As a Bucs fan, I wanted Mariota first…Winston as a second choice…last year. I had a large number of concerns over Winston.

He’s been putting those concerns to rest.

The adversity last year…losing the first game…losing the last 4 games. I was certain the real Winston would show up. And it did. It just wasn’t what I expected.

The kid seems like a good player and a good person. Which makes me wonder if the whole Rape thing was actually a lie.
