Goodell on Vegas: “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling”

As if Raiders owner Mark Davis offering $500 million toward a stadium wasn’t enough of a sign people were serious about the possibility of the Raiders actually going to Las Vegas, the league’s continually softening stance on Sin City should be.

Via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was asked on ESPN Radio whether gambling concerns would be enough to prevent a Raiders move.

All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling,” Goodell said. “To me, where I cross the line is anything that can impact on the integrity of the game. If people think it is something that can influence the outcome of a game, we are absolutely opposed to that.”

The idea that gangsters are going to lean on players to influence outcomes of games is a paranoia of another era. As gambling on sports has become more popular and more available, the stigma of Las Vegas as a destination for the league has receded.

The league’s also perfectly willing to push the game in London, where gambling on sports is not only commonplace, but endorsed on the fronts of jerseys in England’s top soccer league.

So it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that the league seems to be warming to the idea of Las Vegas. If nothing else, the Rams going to Los Angeles required them to come up with another city to use as leverage in existing stadium negotiations.

  1. I just keep hearing that O’Jays song “Love of Money ” in my head. The NFL would go to Syria and Iraq if the expansion money was there.

  2. Goodell throwing the last bit of the NFL integrity away to cash in on Vegas…..my over under for the NFL version of the black sox scandal is 8 yrs once the Raiders move there…..my money is on the under……

  3. More like MD would bring up all the Fan Duel crap plastered all over the NFL and casinos in so many states with teams….You can walk from Arrowhead to a casino

  4. You have to admire Goodell for just how crass he is. This is the NFL squeezing Oakland’s nether regions, nothing more. The sad part is that it will probably work…

  5. And he managed to throw integrity into the conversation. He always does. Its sort of weird to be honest.

And I cant speak for everyone, but I immediately become suspicious of anything that keeps getting repeated over and over and over and over.

For example, not to go political and drag the convo down, but the Affordable Care Act. Over and over and over we kept hearing, “If you like your plan you can keep your plan”, and “Every one will save $2500 a year” over and over and over and over. Which made people suspect it was BS, and it has turned out to be BS. I don’t know a single person who saved $2500. I don’t know a single person who didn’t have his cost increase.

So that is where we are with Goodell. He wants us so badly to believe he is a pillar of integrity. He just keeps repeating it. And then Judge Berman unseals the transcripts from the Brady appeal to Goodell and he flat out lies several times about Brady’s testimony. If he came to the conclusion he came to (and no matter what, that conclusion was reached loooong ago, the appeal wasn’t going to alter that) and his “written decision” didn’t include lies, people could live with that. But it really makes you wonder what else is going on behind the scenes, when Brady says “I talked to them about two things, the air pressure issue, and the Super Bowl ball prep” and Goodell writes that Brady said “I only talked about the Super Bowl game ball prep”, that is a problem

  6. I love the Raiders is Las Vegas. Makes sense. My youngest bro is a fan (Tim Brown is his favorite of all time, which rules). Would love to get the brothers together for a weekend in Vegas where we cap it off with a Raiders game. Not even on some debauchery nonsense – this idea legitimately seems really fun.

  7. The idea isn’t that “gangsters are going to lean on players to influence outcomes” isn’t the issue.

The thought is that if there is legit money to be made on the outcomes, players will be paid off.

    See: soccer/tennis scandals of late

  8. “To me, where I cross the line is anything that can impact on the integrity of the game.”

Dude crosses the line every time he utters the word integrity. In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, “You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you thinks it means.”

  9. They must have programmed Goodellbot to mention “the integrity of the game” every time words come out of his speaker.

  10. They might as well say they’re Ok with it and save face because Davis do it without their approval.

  11. I love it how Oakland is all about family, once a Raider always a Raider, yet every time they think there is a better deal to be had they turn their backs on the faithful that has stuck with them through thick and thin. Family? Loyalty? As Raider Nation, ask Marcus Allan, ask Timmy Brown, ask Rich Gannon. They have all been shunned by the Raider family.

Oakland Raiders……………….always will sell out to the next highest bidder.

  12. Vegas is closer to Disneyland than gangstaland now.

Y, I saved more than 2500 a year if that makes you feel any better.

  13. I would be willing to bet that a near term recession will squelch this idea pretty quick.

  14. I can see the NFL putting a team in Vegas at some point – but I can’t see them letting Mark Davis and Sheldon Adelson working together on a stadium deal. Davis is not the most experienced owner in the league to navigate the pitfalls of a Vegas deal, and Adelson and his deep involvement in the Chinese gambling markets will scare the heck out of the other 31 owners.

Goodell will let the Raiders flirt with Vegas with the hopes of getting them a new stadium in the Bay area while signaling the Vegas market is open for business to the right owner – but the NFL doesn’t let this deal go forward.

My cobra payments were 856 a month when I went into business for myself, now I am paying 550 a yr for better coverage…..you do the math….the program works, …. at my age I would not have gone into business for myself if it wasn’t for ACA …..and there are millions more out there like me…..

  16. “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling,” Goodell said, “And we [the league] can make a even more money and get another free stadium. What could possibly go wrong?”

    Welcome to Las Vegas.

  17. The commissioner’s job, the very reason for existing, is to protect the integrity of the game. He’s not wrong about that – it’s why the first commissioner of baseball was hired after the Black Sox scandal.

Goodell just says it so often and then does everything he can to undermine the integrity of the game. Random penalties, inconsistent enforcement of rules, complete lack of transparency… I’ve always scoffed at the idea that NFL games are fixed, but at this point it wouldn’t surprise me.

Goodell should run for office. What a fraud.

    _______________________________
On the relo side, he was an a-hole for not liking vegas. Now he is an a-hole for warming to vegas, which he doesn’t even need to warm too.

On the business side, he has 32 owners to talk to and clear a lot of things with them like deflategate, dv’s, suspensions, the CTE mess, Refs, NFLPA, etc..

I would really like to see any of us do this job OR run for a political office. You just will NOT please everyone and will need thick skin. Not defending him, but many of you need to get off the “goodell is an a-hole” bandwagon. Its getting old and I know you love the game or you would not be here. So can we get back to bashing each others teams?

Meanwhile we have like 90 odd days till preseason FOOTBALL, and 120 till the SEASON OPENERS !!!!!!

  20. The Las Vegas Gamblers, brought to you by FanDuel. Goodell’s eyes probably turn into dollar symbols while thinking about it. The FanDuel/DraftKings commercials will go from once every 2 minutes to once every 30 seconds.

  21. Jeez, it’s almost like nobody realizes that there’s a rather large casino at the Hollywood Park site that will remain there after the Rams finish building their stadium.

Oh wait, nobody does realize that!

Just to make sure I’m not crazy, I went to the developer’s website to confirm that is still in the plans. Sure enough, their website does mention a “revitalized casino” as part of their development, which they plan to finish in 2023.

  22. It doesn’t matter if the NFL supports gambling or not. If there is something impacting the integrity of the game then it is happening regardless. Might as well get on the gravy train.

  23. Las Vegas is a weird place. You have the strip, which technically isn’t in Las Vegas (the southern boundary of the city is Sahara Avenue, just north of the strip), and you have the rest of the city, which might as well be in another country. It is also one of the few places left where you can make a decent living without a college degree, and the only place I know where the desired shifts are roughly from 4:00 pm to midnight. On the weekends, you can see more California license plates on the strip than in most of Los Angeles and where at 2:00 am, you can actually walk faster than traffic.

  24. Nope Roger, the world has evolved in relation to gambling, you are one of the dinosaurs, although more like a hypocrite.

  25. “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling,” Goodell said.

Means we are all getting better at it so lets put a team in Vegas so I can go to the casino more. Next he will move the league offices there as well.

  26. and by “evolved” Goodell means:
paid by the likes of Fan Dual…
and yet to be paid by the casino’s in Vegas.
He is so transparant it’s ridiculous.

  27. Goodell on Vegas: “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling”…of course we have, I mean, just look at Wall Street taking its share of gambling…wag the dog…

  28. “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling”

I ran that through Google Translator, and this is what came out:

“We have figured out we can make money on it.”

  29. Goodell: “To protect the integrity of the game, there is no way can we let any NFL team move to Las Vegas.”
    Davis: “I’m pitching in a half-billion dollars.”
Goodell: “OMG, what’s happening to me? I’m…I’m evolving!”

  30. There are casinos all over. We have 4 here in Kansas City. They had them in St. Louis as well.

Of course, no one cares about casinos. What they were allegedly worried about was sports gambling, which is only legal in Las Vegas.

  31. Oakland has had over ten years to resolve this stadium issue. They just don’t have the economy to help fund a new stadium. Mark Davis should do everything in his power to make this Las Vegas move a reality. It is a high growth market. So many hotels/casinos would buy luxury suites.

If Davis wants to be in LV in 2017, they will have to expand and upgrade Sam Boyd Stadium. With only seating 35,000 people, it would not be an adequate temporary venue.

Thought I would share my experience.

I just looked at my W2 forms for 2014 and 2015, both of which show the total health insurance paid (I paid 50% of it, my employer paid the other 50%). Both years were the exact same plan.

    2014: $21,385.00
    2015: $17, 453.00

I wonder: at what point in the season does Vegas tell the NFL which team needs to win the SB?
    ———————-

The NFL doesn’t need anyone to tell them. They’ve already got it covered.

  34. it’s a global economy and that goes for gambling too. where you’re physically located makes no difference if you really want to gamble. these days most gambling is done on the internet anyway…so what’s the point of banning an NFL team from Las Vegas?….may as well kick the Niners out of Santa Clara/Silicon Valley because of the scary internet and gambling.

  35. First if gambling were possible to affect the NFL, it’s happening already.

2- It’s such a team game it would be near impossible as with the exception of maybe a QB or LT, or MAYBE a RB one player can not affect the game enough to have it be impactful. Plus they guy is prob gonna get benched during the process.

3- Players salary’s are so high now, the amount that you would have to pay them, and in turn bet on a game to recoup it, would throw up a red flag. I think it would be tough to get a player to throw a playoff game, and some joe schmoe throwing like 200k on a random regular season game would throw a red flag and eventually it would come to light.

Just make it so you can’t gamble on the Raiders just like you can’t bet on UNLV. It’s such a non issue now it’s comical.

  36. NFL Integrity VS NFL Gaming Dollars…guess which way the scale is tipping? Cry me a river Roger…a Texas Hold’em River is more like it.

  37. Now if the Raider fans could evolve from the knuckle dragging group that they are now, that’d be great.

    Just Vegas Baby!

  38. All this talk about Raiders to Vegas is laughable is anybody paying attention?? Raiders are waiting for the Chargers Dean Spanos, if he stays in SD, then LA is open and trust me Mark will pick LA over Vegas. If Chargers move to LA, SD could be diserable Mission Valley and real leaverage, NFL wants growth and proximity to Mexico, hence Raiders Mexico City game. Last time I checked there isn’t a Stadium in Vegas, I saw pictures online looks like a sand lot for now.
