Pederson says Eagles told Bradford they’d draft a QB

AP

The agent for Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford says he’s angry because they didn’t tell him their plans to draft a franchise quarterback. But Eagles coach Doug Pederson says Bradford was told in advance that part of his job would be grooming a rookie quarterback.

Sal Paolantonio reported today on Mike & Mike that he talked to Pederson, and that Pederson relayed the conversations he had with Bradford. Pederson claims he told Bradford all along that he’d be sharing the quarterback room with a rookie.

“He told me that he told Bradford and Chase Daniel up front that they were going to draft a quarterback, and they were going to try to nurture him for the future, and they expected Bradford and Daniel to be part of that, but that this year Bradford would be the starter,” Paolantonio said. “And they were shocked when they told Bradford that they were going up to No. 2 and they were making the trade and investing five picks, and Bradford’s reaction was one of anger, and he abruptly walked out of the offseason training program.”

Paolantonio also reported that Pederson tried to reach out to Bradford, but Bradford is ignoring texts from Pederson, other Eagles coaches and the front office.

It’s possible that Pederson is telling the truth but something got lost in the discussion: Perhaps Pederson told Bradford that the Eagles would draft a quarterback, but Bradford interpreted that as meaning a late-round quarterback, not a No. 2 overall pick who’s clearly expected to become the franchise quarterback by 2017.

Either way, however, Bradford signed a contract to play for the Eagles this year and accepted an $11 million signing bonus as part of the deal. Whether Bradford likes it or not, he’s teammates with Wentz. It would probably be wise to stop pouting, and start trying to prove himself good enough to keep Wentz on the bench.

  1. they told him they would draft a QB but didn’t say we’re going to leverage the future of the team and be forced to play wentz by game 8 regardless of how the team is doing

  2. Any guy that has been as massively overpaid relative to on-field performance (let alone just being able to be on the field for a season) as Bradford should just shut up and cash the checks.

  3. Bradford needs to man-up and serve the contract he signed. He needs to tell his agent to stop to public back and forth. What did he think he was getting into with a two-year deal?

  4. I’ve always thought Bradford was a guy who could succeed, but the combination of injuries, and playing for a team that couldn’t keep him clean was really holding him back.

But, for a guy who’s made absurd money for only occasional production, maybe playing this like a scorned teenage girl isn’t the best move.

  5. Both Pederson and Roseman have repeatedly said publicly they were going to draft a QB… It’s hard to fathom how this could possibly have come as a surprise.

Feels much more like a greedy agent realizing that Bradford might have gotten a bigger contract somewhere else and using this as an excuse to force a trade/contract renegotiation.

  6. Only problem here is the iggles did not draft a franchise Qb they drafted Carson Wentz

  7. I guess all those tens of millions of dollars didn’t educate him any on how to man up. At this point, I would just trade him and roll with Chase Daniel and Wentz. What a big baby.

  8. the guy missed two full season and now he signs an $11M signing bonus and he’s upset? Get over yourself Sam…..

  9. Sam, hike up your skirt, lower your ego, and at a minimum honor your contract, and, if necessary, fake that you are a competitor with leadership skills. It’s in everyone’s best interest to do so.

  10. I have really lost respect for Bradford through all of this. He should count himself fortunate to have a pretty good contract especially when one considers his NFL career is not one of sustained health and success.

  11. He said, she said…..

    The soap opera continues.

I really like Bradford, but if he’s gonna act like a brat, get rid of him. Division in the locker room sucks, especially when bringing in a new rookie in Carson Wentz.

Man up Bradford, it’s a team sport.

  12. They told Bradford they wanted him to teach the rookie everything he knows about NFL football. Bradford said, “It will only take me about five minutes to show him how to fill out injured reserve paperwork, then what?”

  13. I’m so sick of this politically correct BS. An employer doesn’t have to tell you that they’re hiring someone else. Especially when they’re paying you 22 million dollars. Is it a nice thing to give your employee a heads up? Yeah, sure. But do you have to do it? No way. You’re a grown man and a professional and whether or not they told you, just suck it up and take the next snap.

  14. Remember the last time your boss called you in and shared every single future plan that might impact your job? Me either. Now, whiny Sammy can go out and earn his pay just like everybody else does.

  15. He simply needs to play well to keep his job. He’s mad because even he knows that is not likely to happen. He has had time to develop and got paid. Now it’s time to perform.

  16. Is that a tear in your eye, Pam Bradford? Did the Eagles hurt your feelings? Took your ball and went home? That kind of behavior exactly demonstrates what is wrong with him, you need thicker skin to be the face of a franchise, Pammy. Man up.

  17. Bradford is horrible. Play Chase Daniel instead. He’s never had a fair chance in the NFL.

  18. Bradford is either going to play for Philly or end up costing himself a lot of money. No one is going to trade for that contract, and Philly isn’t going to eat the signing bonus. He either plays for them, or he agrees to give back the bonus so Philly can cut his lame butt and he can go get a lot less money somewhere else.

Bradford has no self awareness. He isn’t very good but he doesn’t seem to realize it.

  19. Sham Bichford.

the antithesis of a franchise QB.
    No heart
    No competitiveness

  20. Lets look at this from Bradfords point of view.

With the $78 million he made from his first contract, plus $22 million more from the Eagles, thats $100 million.

How is he supposed to survive on a mere $100 million, being a so-so QB? The Eagles OWE it to him to start him for 2 years, so he can make more money from another team, and feed his family.

You don’t want Bradford and his family to starve to death, do you? You and the Eagles are heartless. Poor Sam is entitled to being the starter and well over $100 million.

So players shouldn’t care what their team does? Shouldn’t care about whether they are surrounded by talent and a chance to win?

This ain’t McDonalds bro. Bradford needs to man up and follow through on his contract. But to suggest that players shouldn’t care what their team puts around them is asinine. Players play to win.

  22. He has never led a team above 500, let alone a playoff game – or playoff win for that matter. He’s never made a probowl…yet he has “earned” over $100 million dollars in the NFL.

What does he expect? Excuses have always been made for this guy not reaching his potential. You want to be treated like a franchise QB? Then actually produce for once in your career. They didn’t mortgage the future. Howie filled just about every hole on this roster in free agency, its not like he is leaving the guy with a team in shambles. The biggest glaring need on this team is running back, which I am sure they can get one in the third round.

Get over yourself and produce and all the rest will fall into place.

  23. Nice functional franchise here. Now the coach is throwing his QB under the bus? It sounds to me like they’re trying to get Bradford to walk away from his contract. Let’s see if Bradford takes the bait.

  24. There is a big difference between drafting a QB later in the draft, and trading the house away to move up to the number two pick. Bradford was ok with competing for the job, but it looks like the job is going to be handed to Wentz. They didn’t tell Bradford all that. Sounds like lawyer talk to me.

  25. Bradford hols out on a fresly minted 20 million one year deal and is afraid to compete with a rookie? Sounds like just the guy I don’t want as my QB.

  26. This just in: Mark Sanchez is reportedly miffed that Denver drafted Paxton Lynch. Won’t participate in OTAs. Same goes for every player on a team that drafted a first-rounder at their position.

  27. So…basically…the entire *culture* of football is telling Sam that he’s gotta grow up and deal with this. The press, the fans, his coaches have ALL basically sided with the Eagles on this one.

Sam, you haven’t got a leg to stand on (so tempting to make an injury joke here).

Look inward, Sam. Man up, and come to camp ready to be a big brother to this supremely gifted kid your team just drafted. He’s gonna need you if you’re man enough to do it. But if you’re not, then maybe you should just stay away.

    It’s called being a teammate.

  28. This might come as a news flash to Bradford, but in those rare moments when he has been healthy enough to take the field, he hasn’t been that good. He should count his lucky stars that he bamboozled the Eagles into giving a ridiculous amount of money to a QB with a career record of 25-37-1 and a passer rating of 81.0 while missing more than a third of his team’s games. His 86.4 passer rating last season ranked a dismal 26th among starting QBs.

  29. This happened to Kurt Warner twice. What other positions do you have to notify. Did the chargers tell their DEs they were drafting Bosa? Did the cowboys tell McFadden they were drafting Zeke? The concept is just dumb. Hey we are going to draft a QB. We may have to move up to get him. Is that ok Sam?

  30. Sam Bradford has never done anything in this league yet has made a boatload of money. The Eagles should sue him for the $11 mil signing bonus and move on. Then Bradford can try to get that cash from some other team. Good luck with that.

  31. >>It would probably be wise to stop pouting, and start trying to prove himself good enough to keep Wentz on the bench.

People need to stop staying stupid things like this.

There is NO competition, there is NO fairness, there is NO keeping a 5 draft pick no.2 overall pick off the field.

It makes NO sense for Bradford to ever play a snap for the weasly Eagles.

You can’t compete where there is no competition in the first place. That’s the fallacy in all these anti Bradford posts.

  32. …….Sam Bradford WILL show up at the eagles mandatory procatices because he doesn’t want to lose a penny of the free money he swindled from the Eagles. He’ll go through the motions and pout. When he does play, he’ll get injured because that’s what he’s good at.

Eh, I don’t think you’d find many QB’s that you would want leading your team falling into the ‘good teammate, help tutor’, being ok with not winning (which the Eagles won’t be doing for at least 2 – 3 years). They’re generally hyper competitive.

  34. Bradford is a solid starter until Wentz comes around. Bradford hasn’t done anything in his career to prove that he’s a franchise QB. I don’t blame the Eagles for holding on to Bradford until Wentz develops.

  35. Since Pederson has been hired they said they were going to draft a QB. It’s been in the media enough. And the reason why Bradford signed a 2 year del with the Eagles is because Condon DID survey the field before FA started and there wasn’t a team out there that was going to pay him what the Eagles did. I can’t believe a 7 year pro QB is afraid to compete–and actually he’s NOT competing with Wentz–both Roseman and Pederson have said numerous times he’s the starter.

  36. Badford is quickly becoming the most unpopular player in the league. His agent and PR department need to do some major damage control.

There’s also a 50/50 chance Wentz doesn’t develop into a solid starter. But, that revelation would come after Bradford is gone.

  38. I say make him a 18 milliin dollar backup this year and send his future options down the drain for being a big baby.

  39. I was all on board with Sammy B. was going to be a great year for him. Finally a team that he could excel in and built around him, an offensive line. pass catchers, runners..

But Sammy, you got greedy and forgot, most of us who are fans will never make a million dollars in a single year, let alone 10..(though possible).
So after taking my birds 11 mill just for signing your name, you better get your A** on that field and lead the way like George W crossing the Delaware!

Get on board buddy, this BS ain’t gonna fly in this town.

  40. So maybe Sam should give back any money he’s received under the new deal and absolve the team of any guarantees?

  41. I think what’s lost in translation is that the Eagles ONLY gave up 3 pick. A third this year, a first next year and a second in two years. The 8th and 2nd picks were swapped therefore cancel out. This year’s Philly 4th was traded for next year’s Cleveland 4th, another swap. They gave up bad contacts to get the 8th pick and the 4th rounder by (again) swapping picks.

If they were trading him or releasing Bradford after the year next year’s 1 doesn’t matter and neither does the following year’s 2nd. In his year here they essentially traded a 3 because they traded their 2 to get him.

  42. If Bradford makes the Eagles competitive(it is the nfc east) and doesn’t get hurt, he will play all season. Romo won’t stay healthy, Washington hasn’t had back to back winning seasons in 25 years and the Giants just suck.

  43. cannot stand sam bradford and the persisting idea that he can be a high level starter in this league. he can make all the throws which is why he was drafted so high, but he clearly lacks “it”, and this is yet another example of that.

But they used a total of FOUR picks on Wentz. Because they spent one of those canceled out picks on him. It was still a big haul for the Browns.

  45. The Eagles did not tell me they were trading up for a QB either. I have taken the Eagles to as many playoff appearances as Bradford has, so I feel like I should have been told too.

  46. When, and if, Bradford comes into camp, I’d start him for several games while Wentz sits and learn. Then I’d start Wentz around game eight or nine and let Bradford hold a clipboard for the rest of the season. Next season, I’d trade or release Bradford before the salary cap hit. Paybacks a motha.
