Vikings trio of 2013 first-rounders to learn fifth-year fate Monday

Monday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio included a visit from Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman. The topics of the day included the deadline of the day: Deciding on whether to pick up the fifth-year option for first-round picks drafted in 2013.

The Vikings had three that year, thanks to the Percy Harvin trade and a decision to trade back into the round. Spielman said that a decision has been made as to each of them — cornerback Xavier Rhodes, defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, and receiver Cordarelle Patterson. Spielman said that he’ll break the news to each of the on Monday.

Rhodes most likely will have his option picked up. For Floyd, it’s likely. For Patterson, it was doubtful before the Vikings added receiver Laquon Treadwell in the first round of the 2016 draft. With Treadwell on board, it becomes an even longer shot.

Patterson has been a very good kickoff returner, but he never has developed as a receiver. In 2016, he’ll likely have extra incentive to do so, since it likely will be his contract year.

  1. 1 out of 3 first round picks panning out. Tell me again how great Spielman is. And don’t try to tell me how great Rhodes is. Two picks in three years doesn’t cut it, not to mention he has to wear boxing gloves in practice because of all the penalties he commits! SKOAL!

  2. The Vikings have to keep Patterson, who else is going to mentor their 6th round pick from Germany on the fine intricacies of route running?

  3. It’s too bad. CP is a helluva athlete, great kick returner and does awesome things with the ball in his hands. He just couldn’t/wouldn’t learn the intricacies of the position. We could use his returning skills in 2016.

  4. And, everyone criticizes the Browns for their couple of blown first rounders.

  5. Why would they draft a WR this year? They had the best WR group in the league last year according to a pretty important person at this site.

are you calling rhodes and floyd a bust? even patterson was a 1/2 non bust cause he produces as a KR sucks he cant work towards becoming a better receiver.. i hear he has horrible work ethic

  7. Didn’tMeatloaf get inspired by the Vikings picking 3 times in the top 30 causing him to write the song “2 out of 3 ain’t bad”

  8. .
Patterson is the WR equivalent of former Patriots RB Laurence Maroney. You can see the talent with the naked eye, but yet it never translates into consistent game day performances. If Norv Turner can’t develop him, he’s a serious question mark.

  9. To all the GB Wacker trolls.. Neither Floyd or Rhodes are busts, and Patterson would immediately start for your team. You better worry about you own drafts. Your team is full of mediocre talent. The decade long decline has started

  10. Patterson had a probowl type rookie season. 9 total TD’s (4 rec, 3 rush, 2 return). Scored in many different ways. I wish his work ethic matched his natural talent. They need to trade Patterson. He has value just like Percy Harvin had value.

………….said every Viking fan every year for the last twenty-five years.

  12. Vikes traded back into the 1rst rnd with the Pats to pick Patterson. Pats used the pks on JCollins(stud), LRyan(starting CB), JBoyce(whiff) and the pick they traded for LBlount. For a KR. Nice job.

  13. Their 2013 draft class has about the same quality as their draft classes of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

The vikings will continue to be active in free agency.
