Dolphins sign Laremy Tunsil

AP

Eight days after sliding down the draft board to No. 13, tackle Laremy Tunsil is getting paid. But not nearly as much as he could have gotten paid.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have signed tackle Laremy Tunsil to a contract.

It will be, as all first-round contracts now are, a four-year deal with a team-held option for a fifth season. Last year’s 13th overall pick, Saints tackle Andrus Peat, received a four-year, $11.4 million deal.

That’s $7.2 million less than the Jets paid No. 6 overall pick defensive lineman Leonard Williams last year. And that’s reportedly where Tunsil would have been picked this year but for the gas-mask-and-bong video that showed up on Tunsil’s Twitter account not long before the start of the draft.

  1. That is a sad loss for this kid. But think about the massive loss of respect Brady gets for doing something exponentially worse and is now rightfully suspended.

  2. 1) If you’re gonna do something stupid, don’t record it.
    2) The hacker should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

  3. I like how this guy gets signed and he’s ready to go! He has to prove those other teams wrong for passing on him.

It wouldn’t have looked good to slide that far due to the video, then be a holdout.

  4. Nobody outside of the teams drafting ahead of the Dolphins know when he would have been picked so stop the speculation …

  5. Sources say Stephen Ross and Laremy Tunsil celebrated the signing with a bowl of the finest marijuana.

  6. I understand that the person releasing the information on his social media accounts was playing dirty pool, but ultimately the responsibility for Tunsil not being a Raven lies with Tunsil. He made the choices that he did during his college days. He had chances during interviews to make teams more comfortable with him and his past. And even if he had done all that, there is still no guarantee the Ravens would have taken him. Baltimore went with the guy who has been deemed the safer choice through the whole draft process.

While Tunsil was certainly put under the microscope at the worst possible time, it is not like he’s a totally innocent victim. These were not fabricated materials.

  7. I’m glad that he has sign his contract, 2.85 Million will keep him going for each year of the contract. Perhaps he will get his act together and put this weed business behind him and have a great career in Miami. Bill

  8. I’m a Jets fan and I may dislike the Dolphins at times but I really hope this kid succeeds. Gruden, Kolber, and Kiper gobbled that video up and trashed him like a bunch of classless buffoons before getting the entire story.

  9. Sure, he lost a lot of money. But, at the same time, $11.4 million isn’t bad for a 21 year old pot-head without a college degree.

  10. Wear a gas mask and smoke drugs all day, u get 11.4 million $

Wear a gas mask while raiding an enemy bunker and serving our country and u don’t even get a thank u.

    Pretty sad.

  11. Im telling you the Ravens, Chargers, Titans, etc are gonna regret passing this guy up. Potentially the most polished tackle since Walter Jones or Joe Thomas

  12. Why do these guys even have Twitter accounts? Has anything good or important ever come from an athletes Twitter account? As a GM one of my interview questions would be “Do you have a Twitter account and are you willing to delete your Twitter account?” Everyone who is intelligent enough to value their career over useless social media and deletes their Twitter account moves up on my draft board.

  13. The conspiracy theorist in me makes me wonder if Miami or other teams hoping to get him to slide to them in the draft were responsible for leaking that video….

  14. And that’s reportedly where Tunsil would have been picked this year but for his gas-mask-and-bong decision. There, fixed that for you.

Normally I am among the first to mock the tin foil hat crowd but it is Miami we are talking about and it did work when they drafted Marino so it’s not as preposterous as most conspiracy theories.

  16. If he gets a good financial adviser he will be set for life, financially. So after you buy your Mom a home, go easy on the spending. No bling, no fancy cars, etc. Wait for the second contract for that stuff.

  17. I wish all teams had the same schedule for rookies after the draft. Some teams have already signed their rookies, and some teams like the Titans have done nothing. I think their rookies disappeared or something. Derrick Henry might have moved to a cave. There was a lot of excitement from the draft abruptly followed by a full week of silence.

  18. Considering Taylor Decker, at pick 16, got nearly 11 million guaranteed, I assume he got more than last year’s 11.4 benchmark.

  19. Funny how a picture is worth a thousand words. Tunsil never failed a drug test while at Ole’ Miss or during the combine and draft activity’s, yet teams, analysts and beat writers are still questioning this guys character despite others drafted in the first 12 spots ahead of him that actually have failed drug tests while in college and more recently than Tunsil.

Oh well, Miami’s gain. They found their LT for the next 10 years.

  20. NFL truly is a place where the un-hirable get hired. Can any of you imagine going for an interview at a billion dollar company and having that kind of baggage in tow? A picture of you needing to use a gas mask to get the best weed hit! He really has been given an unbelievable second chance in life.

Just curious…Does he now make more than Gronk?

Google search, it’s pretty cool, you should check it out.

  22. I don’t think the gas mask video was the main reason he slid.
His feud with his stepdad, or financial advisor, or whomever else there is with this guy that is showing some real animosity towards him — that could be a major headache and media distraction down the road.
Miami finally got rid of Miko Grimes, thankfully, but they may stumble upon someone else just as bad, who knows.

  23. Thanks for the google tip looks you were right Gronk is way under paid. That’s expected in New England…always under paying their players.

Forgot they don’t have one …sorry chess players.
    —————–

Saw you guys finally got a QB in this draft. That has to be exciting for you chippy

  25. It is exciting. Not as exciting as that indoor chess career you have mastered but some what.

  26. Since 2000- Miami is 110-140. Patriots are 190-58 with four super bowl championships. I almost understand your frustration. Have a wonderful NFL season. i know we will.

  27. BTW, how much does your TE make? What’s his name again?

  28. Chesswhileyouplaycheckers must still be bitter from Tannehill being able to throw farther than 10 yards downfield, complete passes while not knowing the other teams play calls, or beating tammy 3 of the last 5 games. Therapy would help you dude.

  29. Got to be careful you haters, the Donald may be looking for your vote. Bill

I am not a veteran of the military, but common sense is common sense. How 33 people can say what this person wrote is “wrong” or “thumbs down” is beyond me! One of the 33 please tell me how he is wrong. Sure, he is mildly exaggerating the fact that our veterans do not receive thank yous because I believe public appreciation of our military men and women have increased especially since 9/11, but the bare facts of what he said is true.
Please explain and to the person who said this.I agree and salute you!
