Bears promoting from within to replace college scouting director

AP

After losing their college scouting director after one year, the Bears are going in-house for a replacement who has been there a while.

According to Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears are promoting college scout Mark Sadowski to replace Joe Douglas, who is leaving for a personnel director job with the Eagles.

The Bears had the option to block Douglas from leaving, since the new job doesn’t include final say over the roster decisions, but opted to let him leave a year after joining Ryan Pace’s staff.

Sadowski has 17 years of experience in the NFL, the last 10 with the Bears. He was their senior national scout last year, and worked previously as their Southeast area scout.

  1. So he spent the last 10 years with the Bears which means he was partially responsible for the failed drafts of Phil Emery and before him Jerry Angelo…well doesn’t that just give me a warm fuzzy feeling all over…NOT!!! This was the “cheap” way out, I thought with this new regime of Pace/Fox that we had learned our lessons from past failures and turned the page on this type of backwards thinking…apparently not :(.

I had my concerns along the same lines, but if the GM doesn’t go with his scouts’ recommendations, what can they do? Apparently this guy was good enough to survive two utterly inept GMs before Pace and not only not get canned by Pace in the regime change, but now promoted. Pace has been a lot more “on” than off in the decisions he’s made so far and Sadowski is highly regarded in the scouting fraternity so I’ll go with Pace’s gut on this one.

  3. Sadowski is a stand up guy and local (St. Rita High) if I’m not mistaken he was responsible for the Bears drafting of Matt Forte as Sadowski is also a Tulane alumn. Don’t talk smack about nothing you know about. Scouts give recommendations and grades GM’s decision to make final call.

  4. It’s funny how some fans act as if they know more than the guys who do this for a living. Some of these same fans who were clamoring for Ashawn Robinson at #11 and saying that was the smart pick and how we were making a mistake if we didn’t take him there. The same Ashawn Robinson who was there 10 picks deep into the 2nd round. Stick to your day job
