Gronkowski chosen for cover of Madden ’17

AP

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will be on the cover of the 2017 version of the popular EA Sports Madden NFL video game, it was announced Thursday.

And, yes, his signature Gronk Spike will be prominently featured on the cover.

This is the first year since 2010 that a fan vote did not determine the player who graced the cover of the game, which is usually released each August. Odell Beckham Jr. (Madden ’16) and Richard Sherman (Madden ’15) were on the cover of the last two editions.

EA Sports has had the exclusive NFL video game contract since 2004. The first game in the John Madden Football series dates back to 1988.

Gronkowski has become of the NFL’s most popular players for his ability to dominate games on the field and party like crazy off the field without getting into trouble. Gronkowski has done his share of magazine covers — wearing more clothes on some than on others — and receiving this honor probably was only a matter of time.

  1. I don’t think Gronk has become so popular because of his party like crazy off the field in any way shape or form,as if working hard and having passion for his game would give him a pass and lend to his popularity. He is a parity of himself who happens to be gifted ,gritty and playing with the greatest quarterback and leader of all time

Should have a picture of him on the cover with a brew in one hand and a showgirl in the other.

How about shirtless on the cover of GQ with Hailey Clauson on his shoulders instead?

Yes folks it’s the Summer of Gronk It’s good to be the Gronk, let the jealous tears flow…

  3. Gronkowski isn’t worried about the “Madden curse” creeping up this season, either.

“It’s definitely reversed itself from back in the day,” Gronkowski said. “You have to look at the players that were on it recently. You have Odell, who had an unbelievable year last year. You have Richard Sherman, who went to the Pro Bowl the year he was on it. Calvin Johnson, who broke the receiving record when he was on the cover.”

  4. Generally not a curse guy. So instead, I’m just gonna call it the Madden Cover’s Ridiculously Unsettling History of Coincidental Maladies.

Somehow this one concerns me a bit as a Pats fan 😳

  5. greatest te of all time. his numbers are jawsdropping as his blocking.

lots of jealous losers on here i see.

    the jealousy is a delight!

  6. He’s all but finished. Sorry, Rob, you’re a beast of a player, but the best you can hope for right now is a mediocre season.

  7. Guess we’ll have to wait for his second autobiography to find out how he feels about this

  8. They should have put a player with some class on the cover… maybe Peyton Manning as a retirement gesture… DeAndre Hopkins… Demaryius Thomas? Having Gronkowski on the cover is sending a bad message to kids everywhere… If you are part of a cheating team, or reside in a cheating culture you’ll flourish.

  9. Best tight end to ever play the game.

    And it’s not even close.

Thank god I’m a Patriots fan.

We have no classless players and we play with class and integrity.

    The dynasty continues.

  10. This is terrible. Now while playing video games in your mom’s basement, hater has to consistently see a great Patriot. Get out and talk to a girl instead. On 2nd thought forget that. You got no chance. Stay in your hole pasty losers and seethe about the Pats instead

  11. The people on here accusing others of being jealous of Gronk, and spouting “It’s good to be Gronk”, are not Gronkowski, but are themselves wishing they were Gronk and are living their sad lives through him.

This years version of Madden comes with triple the amount of cheat codes.

    ———-

I’ve got to give you credit for at least being somewhat original

  13. The NFL is now putting the Patriots best player on the cover of madden in the hope the madden curse is real. Does the NFL have an entire department devoted to trying to cheat against the pats and then try and shift the narrative through the media to make it seem like the pats are the cheaters and not the other way around.

  14. Much deserved…. One heck of a great player….
    Best TE in football….EVER

Gotta frost a Miami fan that NE is taking a $6.5M cap hit for the best TE in the game and the Fins are paying a stiff like Jordan Cameron $8M

  17. There is no “curse” you dolts. If there ever was a “curse” it was broken years ago by Calvin Johnson..but whatever keeps your little typing hands happy.

  18. Gronk is a beast so I have no issue with him being on the cover. The man is one of the most dominant players in the league. Also, thanks for acknowledging his off the field activities. I’ve see people claim he’s just having fun but it’s absurd to think someone on the party scene like Gronk doesn’t partake. He doesn’t pee dirty so more power to him!

Manning only retired so he would not have to face the HGH PED investigation. That is the definition of NO CLASS!!

  20. “Damian Woody said Tom Brady cheats.”
    ===================================

No, no he didn’t. He is the closest to a ungrateful D-bag you will find though that played with NE.

I DO believe he implied he didn’t believe Brady about deflategate, or said something to the effect of: “There is no way any QB doesn’t know what is happening to the balls.”

Never said anything about anything before or after Framegate. Being that science and common sense/evidence proves nothing “happened to the balls,” his comment is irrelevant, now isn’t it?

    ————————-

That would mean zero then, considering there haven’t been any cheat codes in the game for awhile now.

  22. Gronk seemed excited! I’m happy for him. I don’t believe in the curse. At least I’m trying to convince myself of that.

  23. I hope he escapes the Madden Curse for one simple reason.

    Gronk good for football!!!!!!

Plus he seems like a damn fine professional. Already the best TE in Patriots history and that’s saying a lot considering that includes Ben Coates, Daniel Graham, and Benjamin Watson.

Will likely be the best TE to ever play the game when it’s all said and done. He has a Calvin Johnson/Randy Moss like catch radius.

  24. Tell us how much better DET treated you Damien, did they enable your fat laziness, and bad shotgun snapping?

How did that workout for you btw?

  25. Gronk deserves it after all the injuries he was put through…he is no glass doll. If you refer to numerous highlights, going high on him was futile, he’d either drop you or drag you wherever he needed to go. So, everybody went low, way low. He was watching for it, but if your feet are planted and someone rolls into your ankles, your getting injured, no matter who you are. Also, the Pats had a short throw philosophy that usually meant Gronk was in a thicket of defensive players. I got the feeling they started to go long on him post injuries to limit the tag team tackles…

  26. I continue to be amazed at the amount of time and energy some people spend to post inane, juvenile drivel about “cheating” on every single post even remotely related to the Patriots.

What a sad life that must be.

As for Gronk, can you name any other player who dominates his position like he does, and enjoys being a young stud, without even a hint of bad or criminal behavior?

    I thought not.

  28. Please don’t remind me how long EA has held the NFL license. I just played NFL2k5 with a friend the other day. That game was stacked with features that were considered “new” in this years Madden. The game was amazing, still holds up, and was $29.99. Eat a bag of Richards EA.

  29. From the same place that already broke an 86-year Bambino curse. Ring #5 is well in hand. It’s what happens when you hail from a championship culture

  30. Will he be pushing off in the picture? Hard to pick one from all those choices. Start with any play where he’s spiking the ball or making a catch. Five seconds before that is your cover pic.

Good idea. Put an old retired guy on the cover of a video game. You are very in touch with the youth.

  33. Well deserved.

Laughable that Patriot Hater actually thinks their joke of a team deserves such an honor.

  34. Let’s hear it for Tom Brady, the greatest QB that ever graced a football field with his presence!

    ALL HAIL THE KING.

    ALL HAIL THE KING.

    ALL HAIL THE KING.

    ALL HAIL THE KING.

    ALL HAIL THE KING.

  35. I’m no fan of the Pats at all but fair play to Gronkowski.

Plays very well, parties hard, doesnt get into trouble with the police or doesnt drink drive etc. Just a young player enjoying life on/off the field. Not to a crazy level like Manziel

  36. Madden was getting better and better in the last few years and then they ruined it with those stupid catch buttons. It happens way too much and everybody cheeses with it. I played a few games online and as soon as I saw what was happening, I traded it in. Garbage game.

  37. @u4iadman
    @darkneptune73

Madden was so angry that Sherman made the cover after being nabbed for Adderal, that he rolled out a new policy banning any player caught violating the PED rules of the league.
That eliminates Von-PED Boy – Miller from ever being on the cover.

Yeah it had nothing to do with not being able to actually throw the ball anymore. I’m sure Manning was taking HGH. Just like I’m sure Brady (who is playing his best football after age 35) is doing it. Just like I’m sure 80% of the league is doing it. Just like I’m sure 80% of QBs are deflating or over inflating footballs.

But your obsession with Peyton Manning is concerning.

  40. Checkers man is right for once. Patriots refuse to pay this star player. If they can get away with it and he’s not smart enough to ask his true value…. If he gets hurt it’ll be too late.

    ==========================

How do you even arrive at this conclusion?

  43. After thinking about it, I have to admit it’s a brilliant choice. Who better epitomizes the phrase “work hard, play hard” than Gronk? Gronk clearly enjoys his work and enjoys his play. And isn’t the point of Madden Football to enjoy it?

  44. Has Cam Newton been on there? Shoulda been Cam

    ———————————————–

Given all the free advertising he’s done for the game, I’m actually inclined to agree. Seems like they owe that to him.

  45. firstly i dont believe the “curse” is a huge deal like it used to be…with that said, i’m really surprised by this. is Gronk deserving of the cover, yes, BUT i think it should’ve been Cam and not because Gronk isn’t deserving of it. Cam Newton has wanted to be on the cover for not months, years and has even advertised the game online at least twice!! EA has never had a more hotter opportunity to give this to Cam than now because Cam just came off the best season he’s ever had. they should’ve let him be the cover guy for this year….i doubt he’ll ever become the Madden Cover man unless he has another great year like he did last year.

  46. Well, EA just lost a sale.

    ———————————
Cool I’ll buy your copy. Haven’t bought a Madden since 2010 so it’s time.

For the should have been Cam club—
Tom Brady or Payton Manning have never been on the cover, or even asked.

Think about that, the most dominant QB’s in football history.

The reality is Madden does it not for ‘talent’ or ‘deserve’ but by demographics and targeting.
Gronk appeals to dude bro’s who play sport games.
Same if you go back and look at the covers going back.

  47. theparadoxx82 says:

Granted, it SHOULD have been Cam…
    ===============

The current perception of his being a poor loser kind of precludes that choice. It probably should have been Miller but the testing fiasco did for that one. From a marketing standpoint Gronkowski is a no brainer.

  48. hugeheavywoman says:

When asked if Tom Brady was considered for the cover Madden crowed “Man purse boy!! Get out of here!!”
    ——————————

So, you were the one asking, and the one that Madden referenced in his answer?

  49. Cam won’t be seeing a lot of new endorsement enthusiasm since he debuted his unpopular new dance move, The Coward Shuffle.

I gave up Madden after I saw the franchise going the way of baseball and basketball games before it…adding new features/buttons/functions every year, because it’s a new year, until it just wasn’t fun any more. The last baseball game I enjoyed was either RBI II or Baseball Stars. Last basketball game was maybe NBA2K or so. Last Madden was ’10.

Anyway, Gronk is a no-brainer. Oh, I meant to say, it is a no-brainer to put him on the cover. I understand the confusion though.

But, hey, everybody, in 10 years they won’t be selling video games this way. You’ll buy the “intro” or whatever, then subscribe to the updates, which will be bi-weekly I imagine (Tuesday morning/Thursday afternoon). It’s all you jerks who care about who is on the cover and pre-ordering and all that, that prolong this BS business model they are feeding you.

  50. Good idea. Put an old retired guy on the cover of a video game. You are very in touch with the youth.

Broncos organization, both currently and historically are STOCKPILED with cheaters (ie late 90’s front office, Romanowski, Schlereth and the O-line, Manning, Vonn Miller), so you can quietly put your hand down, no one is calling on you.

He plays for the 4 time Super Bowl Patriots, NOT the Denver team that twice after winning super bowls cheated the salary cap, has the HIGHEST number of PED violations, and one player who tested for marijuana then, had his 4 game suspension increased for cheating the urine testing system(Von Miller).

  59. Patriots just don’t pay. Look at Brady’s pay. If he’s the best why is so far down the list in pay? Brady and Gronk’s check together doesn’t equal one of Eli’s checks.

Freaking Hilarious! Denver has never been fined $1M by the NFL, not once or twice like the Pats. Denver has never had a HC fined for any amount, let alone $500,000 for cheating. Denver has never had a HOF QB suspended for cheating and said suspension being upheld the the 2nd Circuit! Denver has never had a star player convicted of first degree murder. Should I continue? The list is long!

  62. Me Gronk. Me like catch little balls and spike really hard. Richard Sherman made the pro bowl? No Gronk no. Sherman didn’t play in the pro bowl. Sherman was getting Tommy John surgery for his busted elbow. And since he was so kind to say his team-mates should grace the cover also, they didn’t grace the cover but shared The Curse. With a healthy secondary, the Seahawks beat the Patsies easily. The Curse has begun already. Brady suspension.

  63. The Giants finished 2015 with the worst defense. The only reason they finished 6-10 is because of the NFC Least. OBJ was suspended for one game(should have been more), Burfict was suspended for three games. How ironic, the Redskins won the division and conveniently landed Josh Norman. Good luck with the overpaid free agents. How about drafting Apple at #10 without the need for CB and better ones on the board in a defensive loaded draft. And the Texans trade up one spot for Will Fuller. The Redskins said we’ll take Josh Doctson and a 2017 6th round pick. Move over OBJ The Curse is real.

Denver was fined $968,000 in 2001 and $950,000 in 2004 for salary cap violations. That’s close enough to $1,000,000 for me.

They also lost a couple of draft picks for those violations.

Their HOF quarterback got the heck out of there before he could be investigated for taking HGH, for which he certainly would have gotten suspended.
