Quarterback Ricky Stanzi is participating as a tryout player in the Browns rookie minicamp this weekend.
A fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2011, Stanzi has never played in a regular season game. He spent two years with the Chiefs and has also been on the active roster with the Jaguars. He’s bounced around from camp to camp and practice squad to practice squad; he was cut by the Giants at the end of the 2015 preseason and then spent some time on the Lions practice squad.
Though this could just be a matter of convenience — Stanzi is a native of the Cleveland area — and the Browns needing a camp arm, with a new coaching staff in place Stanzi could earn a longer look. The Browns currently have a full quarterback room with Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw under contract and third-round pick Cody Kessler soon to sign.
The Browns have 46 players in this weekend’s minicamp after tying an NFL record with 14 draft choices. Stanzi is one of 14 tryout players participating.
