Ravens sign veteran cornerback Jerraud Powers

No team in the league works the compensatory pick market like the Ravens, and they’ve struck again today, adding to their secondary.

Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Ravens have signed former Cardinals cornerback Jerraud Powers.

Powers was an unrestricted free agent, but by waiting until after yesterday’s deadline to sign him, the Ravens avoided having his addition factor into the equation for future comp picks, which are doled out based on net gains and losses in unrestricted free agency.

Powers has been a solid if unspectacular starter for the Colts and Cardinals, and drew some interest from his previous team and others previously this spring.

The Ravens used a fourth-round pick on cornerback Tavon Young, but with Lardarius Webb moving to safety, they still needed numbers at the position.

  1. that’s a great depth signing for Balt. 52 tackles, 9pd’s, 1int, 2 fumble recoveries last year on a good D in Arizona. Nicely done.

  2. I was just looking at the free agent list and couldnt believe this guy was still unsigned. Like the article says, solid if not spectacular corner, in a pass happy league. Good signing by the ravens as long as its under 4mm a year.

  3. Cards would’ve resigned him but he wanted a raise which is understandable. GM Keim has to make the tough choices to sign Honey Badger. Good signing though for the Ravens.

  4. This dude was consistently burned while playing opposite of Patrick Peterson last year. The cardinals need depth a CB (outside of PP and TM) so I’m surprised they just let him walk.

  5. Is a good signing. Good player. Balty is always tough. They were decimated by injuries last year. I don’t like them, but you got to respect them.

No kidding. When you pay about $80M too much on your average QB, you have to be good at low round picks and udfa’s. Something’s gotta give.

    “Solid if not UNspectacular.”

You misread the sentence in the article. Basically, he’s no Champ Bailey, but he’ll get it done for the Ravens.

  8. Ravens fans – I have no beef with you guys.
However, Powers got lit up more than a Christmas tree in Dec. When you needed him to make a key stop on 3rd and long, he failed… many, many times. He loves to give an opposing WR a 10 yd cushion… When it’s 3rd and 7. I lost count how many times he doesn’t look at the ball when it’s in the air..

  9. That means more time in the starting lineup for Justin Bethel for AZ, and that means somebody is going to be catching a lot of balls wherever he lines up.

  10. theoriginalcardsfan – he presumably has two legs and can walk, meaning he would be an upgrade over what we had at points last year.
