Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson gave the commencement speech at the University of Wisconsin on Saturday, and in it he referenced perhaps his most famous -- and worst -- play.
In giving advice to the graduates at Wisconsin, where he played his final season of college football, Wilson said that they should try not to throw an interception at the end of the Super Bowl, as he did two years ago.
“If you’re dating a woman that’s way out of your league, ask her to marry you. If you can throw a football 80 yards, for some reason, people think that’s pretty cool,” Wilson said. “And if you’re playing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl and you’ve got 26 seconds left and you’re down by four and it’s second-and-goal on their 1-yard line, try not to throw an interception. That’s purely, purely hypothetical, of course.”
Wilson acknowledged that a college degree may not be quite as relevant to his own career as it will be to most of the graduating class.
“When a 300-pound guy is chasing me down the field with a big ‘G’ on the side of his helmet wearing green and yellow,” Wilson said, “The last thing I’m thinking about is, ‘How do I use my liberal arts degree?’”
After his playing career ends, Wilson may use his bachelor’s degree, which is in broadcast communications from North Carolina State. He also has a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy analysis from Wisconsin.
