Five former or current NFL players could compete in the 2016 Olympics

Five different athletes with NFL experience are vying to compete in the 2016 Olympics, with two trying to make Olympic rugby teams, two trying to run the 100 meters and one having a real shot at gold in the long jump.

The player with the best chance is Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who long jumped a whopping 27 feet, eight and one-half inches at a track meet over the weekend. Not only is that Goodwin’s career best jump, but it’s the best jump in the world this year by anyone. Goodwin is heading to his second Olympic Games after a 10th place finish in London in 2012, and this year he could bring back gold.

According to NBC’s Olympic Talk, two former NFL players, Jeff Demps and Jahvid Best, are attempting to run the 100 meters in Rio. Demps was on the American 4×100-meter relay team in London in 2012 and has a chance of making the team again this year. Best, who retired from the Lions because of concussions, is attempting to qualify for the Olympic team of the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia, where his father was born.

As we’ve previously noted, Patriots safety Nate Ebner has taken a leave from the team to try to qualify for the U.S. Olympic rugby team. And former 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne is giving up football to return to rugby, also with Olympic ambitions.

Several athletes have gone from the Olympics to the NFL, but Herschel Walker is the only player who has ever played in the NFL first and then competed in the Olympics (in bobsledding in 1992). This year as many as five players with NFL experience may compete in Rio.

  1. Ron Brown was close.
He was drafted by the Browns second round 1983, forgave that year for the Olympics and was traded to LA Rams in 1984 after winning 4×400 in LA.
Pretty good return man in the least.

  2. Hayne would have a hard time making a rugby sevens roster at this point based on team chemistry. He can qualify just to be selected, but I don’t think FIJI/AUS would give him the time of day, it would just ruin their respective teams chances and those two teams are top 3 in terms of potentially winning Olympic gold in Rugby sevens.

  3. Carlin Isles is on the USA Rugby Sevens team. He was on the Lions Practice squad in 2013. Isles had 40-yard dash time of 4.22 seconds.

He’s fast as greased owl snot but he has trouble hanging onto the ball.

  4. Rugby sevens is going to be awesome. I hope with the Olympic exposure it becomes more mainstream.

Someone call Steve Smith and get him to tryout.

  5. David Wilson was competing in the triple jump last year but he was well short of Olympic qualification standards and has not been competing this year.

  6. Hating this Jarryd Hayne “returning to rugby” talk.

Jarryd Hayne has never played rugby. He played Rugby League, which is an entirely different sport. Not that anyone cares except Australian’s.

Sounds like you may not know all of the details. Australia, first off, is not involved. Hayne is participating in Fiji’s camp based upon an invitation from the union. While he is not lock to make the 12, they have certainly already “given him the time of day”.

  8. Too bad Jumping to Conclusions isn’t an Olympic event, I know a lot of Viking fans who could qualify. But much like the Vikings themselves, they would ultimately fall short.

  9. I think Bo Jackson could have competed in something. He reportedly ran a 4.12 40-yard dash. That doesn’t necessarily translate perfectly to track (where the shortest event is the 100m dash), but I’m sure he could have made a 4×100 team.

Or maybe a decathlon. He was definitely better than “Dan and Dave” (for those who are old enough to remember!)

He was the best athlete I’ve ever seen. Bo knows, Bo knows.

Fun fact, the USA is the reigning Olympic gold medal champions in rugby (rugby union).

Also, you guys should watch some youtube videos of Carlin Isles in rugby 7s. It’s cartoonish how much faster he is than everyone else on the field (pitch?).
