Titans waive Zach Mettenberger

The Titans are moving on without quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

The team announced Monday that they have waived the 2014 sixth-round pick. They signed Matt Cassel to play behind Marcus Mariota earlier this offseason and also have Alex Tanney on their 90-man roster.

Mettenberger made six starts during his rookie season and generated some talk about a future as a starter in Tennessee or elsewhere while posting an 83.4 quarterback rating and averaging nearly eight yards per pass attempt on a bad Titans team. The Titans didn’t trade him after drafting Mariota, however, and it appears Mettenberger didn’t do much to help his value by struggling in four starts while Mariota was injured last year.

He’s still a young quarterback who has had flashes of promise, though, and it would be surprising if he makes it through the waiver wire unclaimed. If he is, we’ll find out on Tuesday where he’ll be continuing his NFL career.

  1. I’d love to see the Lions sign him. Better then professional system QB clipboard holder Dan Orlovsky.

  2. Tennessee had better hope beyond hope stick leg Marcus didn’t get hurt, or it’ll be Cassel time, which never works out for anyone.

  3. How will they manage? According to some clueless Titan fans last year, he was way better than Mariota despite coming into the league as the QB who squandered Beckham, Landry, and Jeremy Hill all on one team as his skill position guys.

  4. Agent: “Vikings on line 1 Zach, they say they are in desperate need of a starting caliber quarterback, not sure if you are it but you are better than what they have” !

  5. I’m not surprised, since they picked up Matt Cassel. I’m just surprised it didn’t happen sooner. I was hoping they could trade him and get something in return, but they waited too long for that, because any trade value he had likely went out the window months ago as he didn’t win a single game last season when Mariota was hurt.

…Hopefully we won’t have to see Matt Cassel starting any games this year.

  6. I thought he was supposed to be the new Tom Brady. That’s what all the media claimed. I mean they both have being drafted in the 6th round & all.

  7. I think he is definitely worth a shot as a back up due to his age and what we have seen, I am a little surprised they couldn’t get a late round pick for him.

  8. Titans will never be a good franchise just because of things like this. QB Russian Roulette. Instead of just, you know, building a team that can plug a QB into.

  9. I’m really surprised they weren’t able to find a trade partner. Seems like he’d at least be worth a 7th rounder.

  10. Matt Cassel over Mettenberger on a rookie contract? This guy has almost as good at swindling money out of GMs as Sam Bradford.

  11. Zach has all the physical ability in the world (except scrambling), but I never liked the me-before-team attitude that kept resurfacing. From his interviews undermining the leadership of Jake Locker (before the just-drafted Mett had even taken a snap!) to his demands to be traded within minutes of Mariota being drafted.

I won’t miss him. At all.

  12. Dude’s a beast!…every team in the NFL should be pushing hard to get Mettenbieber, the selfie legend himself

  13. Mettenberger age 24 who was 0-10 as a starter for the Titans apparently displayed a sour attitude at being Mariota’s permanent back up … Mettenberger apparently said to the Titans GM that he wanted to go somewhere he had a chance to start. Someone will pick him up due to his strong arm.

  14. He could spray himself with silver paint and be one of those human statues on Bourbon St.

  15. Alex Tanney has got to make the 53 man roster. Kid is very good…just keeps getting nudged out by Big NAMES from bigger schools. If Dallas had kept him, he would be going into year 4. He made it to the final cut that year. He’s one of those kids that was groomed to be a QB.

  16. At minimum a camp arm somewhere; to bad he did not get released at the start of the league year.

  17. There’s going to be at least 1 really bad team that loses out on a chance to get a capable #2 because they wouldn’t give up a 7th round pick.

  18. His fundamentals got a bit sloppy, after he had made them so outstanding in his senior year. With the right coach, at another place other than hapless Tennessee, he could do quite well.

Mariota is such a huge talent that it doesn’t matter he had no team around him, but Mettenberger really needs at least some competency from the rest of his teammates.

  19. DALLAS!

Doesn’t seem like a Hue Jackson type player to me. Perfect guy to hang loose in the crazy Dallas system. Playing behind Mariota was idiocy for both player and team.

Oh, but typical Titans, Cassel is SO bad at this point that the only thing he brings to the table is what Mett lacks: experience to help in the QB room on breaking down tape. Mariota misses any time and the Titans better hope those two new RBs can carry 35 times a game.

  20. Funny how so many wrote in for the Jets or Denver and it makes sense, but he is subject to the Waive Order and will never make it to them.

  21. Matt Cassel is an excellent QB.
I greatly enjoyed watching him play for Dallas after Romo got injured.

PS – I follow the Giants and Eagles. Cassel sucked win. I’d keep Mettenberger over him, since he costs less, unless Mettenberger has a bad attitude.

Alex Tanny couldnt beat out such stiff competition as EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel or Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo. Two of the three were actively being bood out of the city by the fanbase.

  23. Just another big guy with a strong arm who will never be a winning NFL QB. His arm is impressive enough for him to bounce around for a while, but it’s probably in his best interest if he just stays a backup, and doesn’t get into too many games. It’s when he actually gets on the field against a live defense, that he looks bad. The biggest surprised to me is that a team actually signed him out of college. The tape never lies.

  24. Matt Cassel went 11-5 as a starter at New England. What has Mettenberger done?

I hate to pile on the kid, but the three guys you named have all looked better in the pros than they did in college. That’s almost unheard of.

  26. Feel bad ….thought he had a future. If the Titans picked Cassell over
him then he is in trouble. Anyone who watched Cassell throw last year
knows his arm is gone. Slow to read with no arm equals no wins.

  27. This guy played under Whisenhunt and Mularkey and did alright on pretty bad teams. If he were to get a shot under Gailey or Kubiak I could see him shining.

  28. Not a good move for my Titans. Cassell has proven he’s not a capable backup & keeping Zach around would’ve been some insurance just in case our line still isn’t up to par and Marcus has to miss a play or two(God forbid a game or two)

  29. Way to go Titans!!!!!

Zach was some insurance when Mariota goes down again…still searching for that first win in the NFL….

Matt Cassell as backup…..well he showed Dallas that in eight games last year that he could throw 5 touchdowns while tossing 7 interceptions….at least he won one game…I guess….

    I don’t think I could even call this a lateral move…..

  30. I was surprised when the Titans picked up Cassel and now I’m surprised again. I think ZM is better that his career in Nashville allowed. Somebody will give this guy a shot and will be glad they did, meanwhile it’s a good thing Tenn brought in more protection for MM.

as a complete and utter failure, this guy has Bills written all over him

You mean the team you root for the Cleveland Browns, you rip on the Bills every thread, and your team is the Browns……….Heck, Mettenberger would start not only at QB on your team, but would be the best RB and WR too.

  32. I wouldn’t mind the Chargers getting him, but they have been getting men with great attitudes and lots of fire in their bellies. Would Rivers put up with a me first guy?

  33. I think this is a bad move by the Titans. Maybe he’s a bad locker room guy. Either way, I expect the Patriots to sign him to a cap friendly 1 year contract and see if he can compete for the starting job while Brady is out.

This kid has never been in an opportunistic situation.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………….

As a real Giants fan I find this disgusting……

  35. I think he might be a decent pickup for the Texans. I think he’d do a decent job of pushing Brock Osweiler. I don’t think he’s better than Osweiler but he’d much him.

  36. If he cleans his attitude up, I think he could be a serviceable QB on a team with a decent OL and RB.

  37. Can’t see the logic in this move. Matt Cassel just hasn’t played well in recent years, and Mettenberger has shown some promise despite playing on what has been, up to this point, a crummy football team.

I can’t believe there aren’t at least three teams that would have traded a low round draft pick or a serviceable backup player for Mettenberger’s services. He could probably go to Cleveland and win the starting job.

  38. With the right attitude, plus a team with a good OL and running game, he could be a serviceable backup. Sounds like he ran himself out of Nashville. Too bad; there are far worse jobs to have than being Marcus Mariotta’s backup…

    Andy Dalton’s sphincter just tightened”

Because Mettenberger will push him more than AJ McCarron?
C’mon man, think before you post.

  40. Zachary was still on his rookie contract and we cut him in preference to Matt Cassel?? Hours later I still don’t see the logic. My guess is that there’s some maturity issues and Titans brass feared he’d rub off on Mariota. Other than that I’ve got nothing. Put a good o-line in front of him and he’s a starter in this league. I’d take him over Bradford,Tannehill,Osweiler,Fitzpatrick, and whomever the qb in Buffalo is.People give us time and we’ll be contending for the AFC South title. Robinson’s doing a hell of a job

  41. Zach Mettenberger is officially picked up by the San Diego Chargers he will do well with them over time…watch. He throws the deep ball very well which Ken Whisenhunt likes in his offense.

Good luck Zach! I liked your rookie year with the Titans I thought you showed promise at times…
