Adam Vinatieri was one kick away from getting cut in 1996

Adam Vinatieri is, at age 43, the NFL’s oldest player, and he’s heading into his 21st season. He has now been with the Colts longer than he was with the Patriots, but it was in New England that he developed a reputation for big kicks in big games, a reputation that could get him into the Hall of Fame some day.

And his entire career almost ended just as it was beginning.

That’s the word from New York sports radio fixture Mike Francessa, who has long been close with former Patriots coach Bill Parcells. Francessa said on the air on Monday that Parcells nearly cut Vinatieri after Week Three of Vinatieri’s rookie season.

Vinatieri missed three field goals in Week Two of his rookie season, and in Week Three he missed his first field goal attempt and an extra point attempt. And so, late in the fourth quarter of a game the Patriots were winning 28-0, Parcells went to Vinatieri on the sideline with a little test to see how much intestinal fortitude he had: Parcells told Vinatieri that he was going to go into the game to attempt a 31-yard field goal with his job on the line. If Vinatieri missed, Parcells told him, he was getting cut. Vinatieri made the kick.

“I’ve had it with that kicker,” Parcells said, according to Francessa. “If he had missed it I would have cut him. And I told him, ‘You better make this kick’ before I sent him out there. And he made the kick, and he gained confidence little by little, and look who he became.”

What he became is one of the best kickers in NFL history. If he had missed that kick, it probably would have ended his career right there: Undrafted rookie kickers who miss five field goals and an extra point in their first three games usually don’t get a second chance. Two decades later, it’s a good thing for the Patriots, and the Colts, that Vinatieri made it.

  1. wonderful, another great player who Parcells wants to take credit for, lolol.
Without Belichick running your defenses you would have had no success, quite obvious at this point.
    go away already Bill.

  2. Much changed when the Patriots discovered that cave filled with magical power granting new uniforms.

  3. Can we get some verification from AV on this story? Since Francessa is close to Parcells, this story smells a little bit too much like Parcells patting himself on the back. It has a “I knew he had it in him, and I used my incredible ability to coach football and motivate players to drag that greatness out of him…” vibe to it.

Interesting that it comes out now, after there has been hot debate among the Patriots fans and writers about whether or not Parcells is worthy of the Patriots team Hall of Fame. So this conveniently sounds like, “see, this is just one more reason that I should be put into your HoF since I laid the foundation for his greatness in the biggest moments”.

Personally, I think Parcells did help turn around a losing culture, and he deserves a ton of credit for that. But changing the culture is not HoF worthy.

As Patriots head coach, in 4 seasons, he had a 32-32 record. He was 2-2 in the playoffs. He won 1 division title. And he bailed on the Patriots when the team needed him most, the week before the Super Bowl. He was working out a contract to leave the Patriots and become the head coach of the New York Jets during Super Bowl week. That alone is unforgiveable.

  4. Well I guess we can thank Parcells for all of his genius that created Automatic Adam. Oh wait, just like everything in his coaching career, this is only a story because of how great Bill Belichick is, and the fact he had Adam in position for all those clutch opportunities.

I love Parcells, but his legacy needs to be that he was nothing more than any other blowhard loud, a-hole coach, who happened to have one of the greatest football minds of all time working for him.

  5. Mike Francesa telling any story that involves a person kicking a ball will always be ironic as he is always known to me as the guy who did not know soccer players use both feet to kick the ball and was thoroughly surprised to learn (in 2014) that they do, in fact, kick the ball with the left and right legs.

  6. Sorry, Francesdope, we can look this up on ,you know, the Internet

Vinatieri missed a 47 yard field goal with 11 mph winds that day against the Cardinals

He then did a 31 yard field goal on 4th and 6

    He went 1 for 2

    uh, he’s a slam dunk.

You would think, but not necessarily. Just look at the current list of kickers in the HOF. There are 3, and I think 2 of them weren’t even kickers.

  8. I am a forty year season ticket holder and I remember clearly thinking that Vinateiri was a bust in his first few games..an unknown kicker from Montana I believe…eventually made everyone a believer.

Slam dunk?? Deserving or not it is next to impossible for a placekicker to get in the HoF. Vinatieri never played any position other than kicker and there is only one pure placekicker in the HoF.

  11. .
Parcells has a very short fuse when it comes to kickers missing routine FGs and I don’t blame him. Your offense fights and claws for 12 plays to get into range, only to come away empty handed. It’s demoralizing to the entire team.
    .

  12. Wow. Great story. If not for Vinatieri the Pats don’t beak Oakland and don’t beat the Rams and don’t start the dynasty and create the most annoying fanbase in football ( rivalled by Seattles of course).

    So now I hate Parcells.

You guys could bring drama into a discussion about the price of mile. He had missed a bunch of kicks, Parcells told him he better make that one or he’d be cut, and he made it. What’s the big deal?

  15. “Slam dunk?? Deserving or not it is next to impossible for a placekicker to get in the HoF. Vinatieri never played any position other than kicker and there is only one pure placekicker in the HoF.”

You’re right in that it is though for kickers to get in.

What I will say about Vinatieri is he was more than just a kicker. When he played for the Pats he made quite a number of good tackles of kick returners that had broken through and if he hadn’t stopped them would have given up a TD.

Adam is a well rounded football player not just a kicker. I think that gives him an edge a lot kickers don’t have.

  16. Parcells quit the Giants when he realized Belichick would not return as DC in 91, he knew he would be exposed without BB’s great defensive schemes.
Without BB Parcells is Marvin Lewis.

Which is exactly what was described. But yes Francessa is a dope

  18. This is the same year the entire Ravens fan base wagon jumped from other teams such as the Redskins and Jets….

  19. “developed a reputation for big kicks in big games, a reputation that could get him into the Hall of Fame some day.”
Really? He missed two in the same SB game. The facts don’t support the reputation.

  20. That settles it. Bill Parcells needs to give Vinatieri’s HOF induction speech.

  21. am dunk?? Deserving or not it is next to impossible for a placekicker to get in the HoF. Vinatieri never played any position other than kicker and there is only one pure placekicker in the HoF.

that doesnt mean he is not worth it.

  22. I don’t see how people think Parcels was trying to take credit for Vinnateri’s success base on this story. If anything this story gives Adam all the credit for making a kick knowing his career was definitely on the line.

If Vinatieri isn’t a HoF kicker, no one is or ever will be

Wish he’d stayed in NE but I don’t blame him for moving on

Win/win on him leaving NE – the Pats got another great kicker for less money and less miles on the leg

Adam got his $$ and still got an extra Super Bowl ring by defeating a juggernaut Bears offense led by Rex Grossman!

  26. ( . Y . ), sometimes “changing the culture” can be enough to get you into the Hall of Fame, just look at Tony Dungy and all the credit he gets for a defense that Sam Wyche built.

  27. Vinatieri will absolutely be in the hof, unless goddell the dictator tries taking that away from the patriots also. Adam is clearly the most clutch kicker in league history with some of the most memorable kicks of all time. If you think any differently you are just a hater. Usually kickers don’t get in. This one will.

  28. The kick in the snow to beat the Raiders in the “tuck rule” game was quite possibly the most clutch kick in NFL history. Moreover, Adam is one of the few Patriots BB let go that has gone on the have a decent and longstanding career elsewhere. But when Adam is indicted into the HOF….it WILL be as a NE Patriot no doubt.

  29. whoops, yes we can look it up – he missed 3 the week before in buffalo

A rookie kicker can almost be excused for missing 3 kicks in Buffalo in october. That stadium is notorious for screwing with kickers and punters who arent in it regularly

You’re missing the point though… The best HOF test is to quickly answer the question without thinking or looking at stats… “Was that guy a hall of famer?”

Vinatieri definitely passes that test. Too many big kicks in the post season.

  31. Pats fans were okay with Vinatieri at the time, since this was only three seasons after we suffered through the Scott ‘Missin’ Sisson season and his 53.8% kicking percentage

  32. I believe this one because Parcells stuck with Scott Sisson on the ’93 Patriots for too long. Matt Bahr was still out there in ’96, and if Parcells was going to bring him back, sooner would have been better than later. Bahr was old but could still make the extra points at least.

  33. When it comes to Parcells Francessa has a round mouth. By contrast, even after Vinateri left the Pats for the Colts, Belichick refered to him as their “best player” in their first super bowl winning season, he didn’t take credit for Vinateri’s success.

  34. Great story! don’t bother listening to these dopes who think its all about Parcells ego.

    ============================
What’s the big deal? What’s the big deal, you ask? I’ll tell you what’s the big deal.
But first I need to know what you are talking about.
If your statement is truly about the price of mile, then the drama could go off in many directions eg, did you mean the price of a mile, in which case it also depends on where that mile is located and what the mile contains. Swampland in Alabama doesn’t cost as much as the Gold Coast in Australia.
If a battle won mile in war, then depends on whether you are a heavy metal band Sabaton from Sweden enthusiast and are referring to their Art of War album or about war in general.
But if you are talking about the price of milk, well you see that is a drama of a completely different kind. The Price of Milk the movie or just the rhetorical question.
So yes, there is much drama to be had. But the correct drama only after a clarification.

Parcells as Dolphins GM ruined the franchise for 10 years with his sidekicks Ireland and Sparano, nice job Bill.
    =======

The Dolphins haven’t been relevant for over 30 years. Shula had one of the top 5 greatest QB’s of all time but couldn’t put anything together around him. Jimmy Johnson couldn’t build a winner there either. So, Head Coaches with 5 rings total must be the problem.

  37. Parcells…selfish traitor, now irrelevant has-been needs to keep his mouthful of huge fake teeth shut and just fade away into the woodwork.

No wonder Belichick did everything in his power to get out from under him and leave the Jets behind – probably fearing a knife in the back like the Patriots and their fans got from him in ’96.
