Brandon Mebane: Chargers defense more talented than Seahawks

Defensive tackle Brandon Mebane was the longest tenured member of the Seattle Seahawks prior to signing with the San Diego Chargers this offseason. Mebane was a third-round pick by Seattle in 2007 and spent the first nine seasons of his career in a Seahawks’ uniform.

Now in San Diego, Mebane seems particularly bullish on the potential of the Chargers defense. He believes it’s capable of rivaling that of his former team.

There is so much talent on this team, it’s unreal,” Mebane said, via Eric Williams of ESPN.com. “I was telling guys there is more talent on this defense than there was in Seattle. If you look at the draft, you’ve got four first-round draft picks and you have five second-round draft picks all on defense.

“In Seattle, you only had two first-rounders and one second-rounder. Everybody else was pretty much down in the draft, or wasn’t drafted. So if we put it together, play together, and work on our skill, I think the sky’s the limit for this defense. It’s amazing, the skill and the talent level is there. All we’ve got to do is just believe in each other and play together.”

The Chargers certainly have expended significant draft capital on the defensive side of the football. Jason Verrett, Melvin Ingram, Corey Liuget, Brandon Flowers, Jeremiah Attaochu, Manti Te’o, Casey Heyward and Denzel Perryman were all selected in the first two rounds of the draft. The Chargers used the No.3 overall pick last month to add Joey Bosa to the unit as well.

However, draft slots don’t specifically equate to production. Just because those players were selected in the first 64 picks of the draft doesn’t mean they’ll be Pro Bowlers or cogs in a productive defense. The Chargers ranked just 20th in team defense in 2015.

The Chargers should be better on defense with their additions this offseason. Whether they can rival Seattle’s defense – who has led the league in scoring defense in four straight seasons – may be a bit overzealous. But there’s nothing wrong with a little optimism for your new team.

  1. mebane lol dont matter if its true are not the san diego chargers wont make the playoffs so take the constellation prize

  2. Before people get upset. Key sentence here, “So if we put it together, play together, and work on our skill, I think the sky’s the limit for this defense.”

  3. Sounds like he’s trying to pump up his new team mates and be the consummate locker room vet. Good for him.

All the rah rah aside… 1st and 2nd round picks don’t make a team great, that means they continually lose more than win.

  4. “In Seattle, you only had two first-rounders and one second-rounder. Everybody else was pretty much down in the draft…”

Yeah, like Sherman in the fifth. And for whatever reason, even Aaron Rodgers won’t throw his direction anymore…unless he wants the pass intercepted in the end zone during the NFCC.

    Hmmm.

  5. The Choo Choo Express looks good this time of year, too bad it won’t start.

  6. Your draft round doesn’t make you talented, so stop with all that crazy talk! Plenty of 1st and 2nd round talent that are doing nothing or are out of the NFL.

  7. Good try Mebane. Seahawks fans still love you. Can’t hate a man for trying to motivate his new team.

  8. Says the guy that for cut…. er, I mean signed a free agent deal. Yeah, that’s it…

  9. Here we go, this will start with an immediate butt hurt reaction from the Seahawks fans, who will all caveat their post with how long they have been fans, because even they know the bandwagon is strong in the northwest.

That will be followed by the Seahawks defenders claiming they don’t get the respect they deserve as the number one defense in football history.

That will be followed by the Broncos fans getting butthurt because the Broncos defense is the greatest defense in the history of football.

And then finally we will hear from Wade Phillips and TJ Ward that they aren’t getting the respect they deserve…

    Does that cover it?

  10. When you make claims that you are more talented (or whatever) than someone else, it usually means you aren’t–you just think you are.

  11. Hilarious. Someone should check this guy out for CTE.

Or… was that a very clever back-handed diss of the coaching staff?

Here we go, this will start with….

    ————————-

…it’ll start with some know-nothing rererepeating the bandwagon nonsense because it’s so much easier than coming up with an original thought.

‘Bane always gave it up for the team while he was in Seattle; we’ll miss him, but the Bandwagon has no problem with him giving it up for his new team.

    Now go polish your “Free Brady” tattoo, ( . Y . ).

  13. San Diego’s D is much improved. And there is a lot of talent on the team. Hopefully the players and coaching staff can translate that into wins.

  14. I have no problem with Mebane motivating his new team. That’s exactly what he is supposed to do.

And if a team has better draft choices than Seattle but still does much more poorly, that’s just bad coaching, bad draft evaluation, and/or horrible team chemistry.

There is a reason that the Chargers have great potential but still ended up selecting third in the draft.

  15. A look at the rosters shows he is correct. The thing about the Seahawks is they would get some big studs up front and then with the three great players in the secondary they would dominate.

The weak Niners and Rams offenses hides the Seahawks talent dropoff over the last few years, and the loss of Mebane hurts them further.

The Chargers LBs were already better than Seattle’s. Mebane makes the Chargers DL better than Seattle’s.

Of course the Chargers cannot compare to the Seahawks awesome trio in the secondary and it’s really those guys who make Seattle so great.

  16. They’ll be better than the raiders defense, (who isn’t) but they’ll still have the third best defense in the AFC West.

  17. The kid the Hawks drafted Jarren Reed will make EVERYONE forget about Mebane…..mark it!

Dude, if you’re going to troll an article, at least know what the heck you’re talking about. The Hawks just drafted first-round talent Jarran Reed to replace Mebane. They also signed FA Ahtyba Rubin last year…he’s way better than Mebane. Unfortuantely, Mebane has seen better days. Back in 2011 & 2012, Mebane used to get like 60 tackles. In 2014, he had 20, and 24 last year. His production has declined and his replacement Reed will probably get 50 tackles in hs rookie year.

Regarding LB’s, which of SD’s LB’s are better than KJ Wright and Bobby Wagner? Check out their grades on PFF. Perryman is a good LB…who else do the Chargers have? Teo and Butler are both horrible.

Talent dropoff? Please explain how the Seahawks are the only defense in NFL history to lead the league at #1 points allowed for the last 44 years straight. They don’t just play the Rams and the 49ers. They faced more playoff teams last regular season than any other team in the NFL.
