FOX has hired former NFL linebacker Chris Spielman as an analyst, beginning this fall.

A four-time Pro Bowler with the Lions, Spielman also played two seasons with the Bills before retiring with the Browns in 1999. Spielman began his broadcasting career with FOX in 1999. He’s worked for ESPN, primarily calling college games, since 2001.

The FOX news release said Spielman will work as an NFL game analyst and contribute to the network’s college football coverage.

A College Football Hall of Famer, Spielman has been living near Columbus, where he starred at Ohio State. He’s the brother of Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.

  1. Spielman is the antithesis of the “look at me” announcer. I’ll miss him doing Big Ten games, where he did a good job of being fair to the thirteen teams who aren’t the Buckeyes. Wish there were more announcers like him.

  2. Class act — great guy. It’s my belief that he was fired from the Lions for being smarter than the coaches. The year he was fired the Lions started out 0-2. Spielman called a players-only meeting to find out what the problems were. He then called another meeting, players and coaches, where the players unloaded on the coaches. The team did ok for the rest of the season and nearly made the playoffs. When the season was over, the Lions let Spielman’s contract expire and replaced him with some yutz that no one has heard of before or since.

  3. If magic is drafting a QB who throws 8 of his 14 TD passes against the Bears and Lions, and losing in the first round of the playoffs at home, then the bar is set very low for what is “magical”.

So I would say “yes”. Chris Spielman is “magical”. And so is everyone else.

  4. Great addition to FOX!!!
I was thinking the same thing about not having him in a Lions uniform! Funny thing is, both players in that pic are former Lions.

Also, some guy above complained about the guy who replaced Chris after he left the Lions and called him a yutz and nobody knew him. Every Lions fan knows Stephen Boyd and every NFL fans should know Pepper Johnson, that’s who “replaced” Spielman.

  5. Definitely an upgrade, some of their color analysts are horrific. But truth be told, some of their play by play men are worse.

  6. I forgot he played for the Bills and Browns. How is the photo not one of him in a Lions uni?

  7. Bills fans love this guy! The ‘football life’ about him and his family is very moving. He took a leave from the club to be with his wife while she was sick with cancer. He is the man!

  8. As a Michigan alum I always felt Spielman was as honest and unbiased as anyone on TV. When Hoke was making a mess of our Wolverines Chris called out the coaching, and rightly so, in a factual, intuitive manner. Never had ANY problems with his work. OSU was lucky to have him, and so was ESPN. Sorry he’s moving to FOX/NFL and away from B1G broadcasts. He will be missed, but NFL games he works will be more fun to watch. Seems like a genuinely nice guy. Really felt for him when he lost his wife….
