Mike Shanahan: Dan Snyder and RG3 conspired to change our offense

Getty Images

Former Washington coach Mike Shanahan says quarterback Robert Griffin III and owner Daniel Snyder conspired on a plan to change the team’s offense after Griffin’s rookie year, with Griffin then sitting Shanahan down and informing him that he would no longer run many of the plays that Shanahan had called.

According to TheUndefeated.com, Griffin called a meeting with Shanahan, his son and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur in February of 2013 and told them to let him speak without interruption. He then informed them that there were 19 plays in Washington’s offense that he would no longer run because he believed he needed to be treated like a pocket passer and not a running quarterback.

Shanahan said he could tell by the way Griffin was talking that he had previously gone over the issue with Snyder.

“When Robert is standing there going through all of that, I know it’s coming from Dan,” Shanahan said. “When Robert talked about ‘unacceptable,’ that was a word Dan used all the time. He was using phrases Dan used all the time. There’s only one way a guy who’s going into his second year would do something like this: If he sat down with the owner and the owner believed that this is the way he should be used. He had to have the full support of the owner and, in my opinion, the general manager to even have a conversation like that. He just had the best year for a rookie QB in the history of the game. You got selected to the Pro Bowl. We went to the playoffs.”

Griffin was concerned about his own health, coming off a season that ended with a serious knee injury in the playoffs. But Shanahan says he was concerned about Griffin’s health, too, and was baffled at Griffin’s approach.

“We tried to get him to slide,” Shanahan said. “We tried to get him to throw the ball away. If he had told me he was hurt, I would have taken him out of the [playoff] game. To hear him . . . it was really incredible.”

Shanahan says he immediately confronted Snyder, warning him that it was wrong to use him as a pawn.

“I said to Dan, ‘Do you realize what you’re doing to this kid?’” Shanahan said.

Snyder refused to comment on the report, but it’s consistent with longstanding talk around the NFL that Shanahan felt undermined in his attempts to build an offense around Griffin. Ultimately, Snyder fired Shanahan 11 months after that meeting with Griffin. Now Shanahan is out of the NFL, Griffin is in Cleveland and Jay Gruden is coaching Kirk Cousins in Washington — hopefully without interference from Snyder.

  1. Why is this not surprising?

Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones will never win anything as long as they own their teams. They’re not really good football people and their egos are enormous.

They also have no idea that there is a salary cap.

  2. Well RGIII has no one to blame for his career spiraling into the dumps once it’s over…he thought he was something he wasn’t…and I was for drafting him and one of his biggest fans, however, I soon realized he, his act and lack of pocket awareness weren’t going to work…good luck Cleveland!

  3. Warden Mike Shanahan, speaking to the other prison guards:

“This is a conspiracy, that’s what it is.”

“One… big… damn conspiracy! And everyone’s in on it”

My question is – how many of the lies by both sides should we believe?

  4. Yeah, I could see this happening. Of course I could also see Shanahan lying b/c that’s what he’s done to protect his own tail too.

So where does that leave things?

…in the past, where it all belongs. Time to move on, Mike.

  5. Wait, Dan Snyder went behind the coach’s back and empowered players to run the asylum? And you are telling me “Pants and Picnic’s” Bruce Allen didn’t step in?

When did this happen? I’m shocked.

  6. “Jerry Jones will never win anything as long as they own their teams.”

You mean other than the three Super Bowls he already has?

  7. RG3 not wanting to run the zone read for safety purposes is absurd! He had a greater chance getting hurt in the pocket since he took forever to throw the ball. Shanahan was the best opportunity Griffin had to succeed with an offense tailored to his strengths but RG3 thought he was Aaron Rodgers and wanted to be a straight up pocket qb. He did this to himself. Wish RG3 the best but he better be open to running offenses he can actually run or he’ll be out of the league in no time. He has another chance to be great again with a new team but he has to understand he’s not a typical pocket qb. Run the zone, learn to slide and embrace what you’re good at!

    HTTR!

  8. Makes me respect Gruden more for essentially breaking Snyder by benching Snyder’s favorite QB for Cousins.

The fact Griffin was allowed to cry to the owner and demand a meeting to dictate to the coaches what he wanted is absurd.

  9. Mike is like that bitter ex who uses every chance to speak badly about his relationship and never take any responsibility.

  10. Prob a lot of people will disagree, but Shanahan’s offense was perfect for what Griffin is. He built it around his talents and RG3 screwed himself when he ran Shanny out of town. I think if Griffin would’ve learned how to slide, his career would’ve ended up a lot differently and Shanny would’ve eventually transitioned into a more tradition passing offense, but dude was convinced he could run over linebackers at the NFL level and also thought he was T. Brady in the pocket. Best of luck in the Factory of Sadness RG.

    #youlikethat?

  11. Didn’t Shanahan have a clause in his contract specifically stating that Snyder was not to interfere with players? All those blaming Shanahan for “ruining” RG3 are completely wrong. They needed to point their finger at the top.

  12. DC is a mess. It is the site of our dysfunctional government. It deserves a team equally dysfunctional, and that is what it has.

  13. Well, Griffin is getting a fresh start. How it works out will tell us a lot. If he fails to develop, alienates his teammates, and throws everyone else under the bus, we’ll know he was the problem all along. But if Hue is able to develop him into an NFL caliber QB, then Shanahan will take the blame for the failures in DC and probably never get another NFL job.

  14. More bullcrap from The Rat himself, Mike Shanahan.

Just like when he explained leaving RG3 in injured and then said “He didn’t want to come out of the game.”

Everything is on you, Mike. Now go away, once and for all.

You do know Jerry Jones has 3 Super Bowl rings, right?

  16. Dan Snyder is such a dysfunctional egomaniac who brings out the worst in those around him that I’m surprised he’s not the Republican nominee for President by now.

  17. This is shocking — the Redskins had at least 19 plays in their playbook?

  18. I tried to tell people this happened when Robert went to Cleveland but no, everyone was convinced hue Jackson is gonna turn him around and do more with him than the skins did. Rg3 is trash.

  19. Dan Snyder has spent the first 15 yrs of his ownership of the Redskins meddling, micromanaging and creating personal relationships with players that resulted in problems with coaches & the locker room. Has he finally learned that everything he touches turns to coal? Hopefully, he’s learned his lesson and lets Scott McLovin do his job without interfering. Time will tell…

  20. Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones will never win anything as long as they own their teams. They’re not really good football people and their egos are enormous

Jerry Jones has 3 Super Bowl wins under his ownership…

  21. Dude they gave RG3 plenty of time to succeed, Jay Gruden put his job on the line while going with Kirk over Robert. Maybe Shanny would still have a job if he did the same. All this proves is Shanny wasn’t right for the job. Shanny couldn’t even get McNabb to wear a wristband. Dude our money pays your network to cover the league, Redskins is what we are called for now, if your gonna call us all the new “governor wallaces” it’d be nice if you’d stopped using all mascots that are offensive and not just ours, if not, put your money were your mouth is and print the recent poll which shows 8 out of 10 Native Americans aren’t offended, Thanks ESPN

  22. But … but … Little Danny has “changed,” right?

Gruden better hope this season Cousins doesn’t make last year look like an outlier.

  23. If I owned a team, it would certainly be tempting to butt in, with the whole My-Money/My-Team approach. Those with that philosophy will always be doing it. No matter how desperate they are to win, it’s just too tempting. Dan Snyder, Al Davis, Jerry Jones and several others cannot get out of their own way … those teams will have those problems probably until there is a change in ownership.

I’m a Dallas fan and I’m sure nobody in the universe wants to win more than Jerry. But he didn’t get wealthy by following the advice of others, it is just not in his nature.

  24. Say what you want about Shanny, he knows how to build a successful offense around the players/QB he has. Jake Plummer had the best season of his career with Denver, Cutler was playing at a pro bowl level and had TD not gotten injured, my Broncos would have won at least two more Super Bowls. I like Redskin fans. A million times more classy than Pat fans…

  25. Jimmy Johnson has two superbowls and Jimmy’s players have the other one.Jerry dont have any claim to those except he owned the team.Jimmy Johnsons was the brains behind that era of cowboys.Jerry’s brain on football is about the same as mashed potatoes

  26. People seem to forget,?he got a quarterback he did not want , the one he did want in round 3 is the starter now, he had not draft picks for the next few years and could not get free agents because they were penalized because of what happened during the lock out , and he still won game, What coach could of done better?

  27. This story is getting so twisted. The reason why Griffin didn’t want to run those plays was because he didn’t want to get hurt any more then he already had. Can you blame him? Yeah, he never slid or never got out of bounds but the play were Hiloti Ngata hit him came on a weird play and he didn’t want to take that risk again after a 2nd ACL surgery. Just let this crap go, Griffin is in Cleveland, Shanahan is gone and the REDSKINS are becoming a contending team.

  28. People saying Shanny’s lying on this – you do realize he listed about 5 other people that supposedly attended Robert’s manifesto unveiling….

REALLY not that hard to understand you don’t say “Steve, Jeff, Dave, Pete and Lou” were all there if they weren’t because SOMEONE will ask them eventually.

If Shanny was just looking to do a burner – he’d not have said others were at this meeting.

    ______________________________
very true Jerry does have 3 rings but those are more of a result of Jimmy Johnson as they are Jerry.

  30. if Shanahan needed to be told by RG3 that he was hurt in that ’13 playoff game, then Shanahan had no business being a coach. I’ll remember screaming at my TV in complete astounishment:

“how can they send that kid out there when he can barely walk?”

It was obvious to everyone else on that field and most independent observers of the game.

  31. Fans of team know the deal, fans of “A” player, just like the player live in denial. For 52 years I’ve been a fan, didn’t matter who’s name was on the uniform, it was the uniform and team I rooted for, so when a player isn’t getting the job done, next man up, RGIII is/was no different and any true football knowledgeable fan would and could see that Cousins and McCoy ran the offense much better. At the end of the day all that matters is getting the “W” I don’t care who’s name is on the uniform.

What we’ve learned is yes Shanahan admitted he will lie, we’ve learned that RGIII was about his brand and didn’t put in the necessary work to become a better pocket passer, and yes maybe Snyder got too involved, but as someone stated earlier that’s the past, there’s a new Sheriff in town and he’s policing things as they should be…

  32. For all of us who were wondering why nobody was willing to sign Griffin, despite how cheap he came, this says it all.

Has he grown? Has he matured?

    Has he changed?

The point the post above says about Gruden is significant. Gruden’s standing up and showing leadership probably did more to establish credibility within the locker room and the organization than any performance, by any player last year.

The “Quarterback Whisperer” (who has never really whispered any quarterback, but lets pretend) is now responsible for humbling and developing Griffin into a NFL Quarterback.

It can be done. But, Jackson and Griffin have no idea how hard its going to be, and how much adversity they are going to have to overcome in order to do it. It will take a very special coach and quarterback to weather the storm and turn things around in Cleveland.

    Are they up for it?

  33. It’s no secret that Joe Theismann and Joe Gibbs didn’t get off on the right foot–until they had a straight-up conversation after starting out 0 and 5 together. Now, imagine after that first 8 and 8 season, if Theismann (already a veteran) had gotten permission from Jack Kent Cooke to confront his rookie, unproven coach like RG3 did the Super Winning Shanahan.

Theismann: “Coach Gibbs, there are several QB bootleg and sneak plays that we have in the current playbook that need to go. I will no longer run those plays.” (Never mind that flea-flickers are the plays Joe should be worried about.)

Think about it: The Cooke-Theismann-Gibbs scenario should actually be more conceivable than the Snyder-RGIII stunt–if not for one variable: the 51-year-old Snyder. He’s still “Danny Boy” playing with his expensive toy.

  34. Shanahan always has blamed others, a trait his son has inherited. The good news is RGIII has new life with a coach that maybe able to help his realize his immense talent. Also Cleveland has an owner that won’t interfere……no wait scratch the last part.

    Its a conspiracy!

They were out to get me!
    ===

If you’re mocking this or insinuating that there is no way it happened, you’re obviously not very familiar with Dan Snyder’s modus operandi. Doing something like this is right in his wheelhouse.

  36. When I look at Dan Snyder I think damn. Thank goodness Stephen Ross owns my team. DOH!!

  37. As a Giants fan I’m glad this all happened cause it wouldn’t of been long till RG3 got exposed and Shanahan got a chance to work with Cousins which would of been bad for the rest of the east

  38. I’m glad my Raiders’s 13 years of circus has ended. Redskins, i’m sorry to say but it looks like you guys are about to have a few years of set back if Kirk Cousins and Josh Norman developed into elite clowns.

  39. But Shanny got back at him by sending him out for that playoff game on an already blown-out knee, so all is even.

  40. Translation: RG3 got uppity on us.

Seriously, who is Shanny? What’s he accomplished other than lucked out with Elway and a loaded team in Denver? Hey Mike, there is a reason you are not in the league anymore.

  41. when is Shanahan going to go away – Didn’t he get fired like 3 YEARS ago? Why is he still talking? I’m sure this will help him find a job, well or not.

  42. ______________________________
“very true Jerry does have 3 rings but those are more of a result of Jimmy Johnson as they are Jerry.”

Actually Mike Lynn should get the most credit.

  43. Can’t blame Snyder or RGIII. Everbod saw how Shanahan was willing to risk RGIII’s career in that knee-blowout game.

Snyder’s mistake was hiring Shanahan in the first place.

All water under the bridge at this point– Scot McLoughan has that team going in the right direction and they will be a playoff team for the next several years.

(While Niner and Seahawk fans slowly realize who was responsible for getting all those great players.)

  44. Any QB that would pull rank on his head coach is just asking to be Mr. Pinata when the season starts. Ironically, that is what RG3 became. Hmmm.

  45. I don’t believe Shanahan. If I’m the coach I tell the player to run whatever I call. If he won’t run it I’ll bench him. If the owner wants to fire me, let him.

  46. The sad part is that I really believe this. I can’t help but think of a lyric to an Elton John song that reads, “It’s funny how one insect can damage so much grain.” Dan Snyder has done so much damage to this team and has caused so much embarrassment for its fans that it’s criminal. At this point, all I can say is that I’m glad I got to see three Super Bowl Championships. Even though Scot McCloughan is finally righting the ship, stories like these and seeing Danny’s smiling mug around the players remind me as to why I gave up my seats almost 10 years ago and haven’t looked back since.

  47. “We tried to get him to slide,” Shanahan said. “We tried to get him to throw the ball away. If he had told me he was hurt, I would have taken him out of the [playoff] game. To hear him . . . it was really incredible.”

    – This one statement shows that Snyder was right and explains why Shanahan is no longer in the NFL. Shanahan was literally the only person watching that game that didn’t know RGIII was hurt. When your rookie QB has to take himself out of a game and then go to the owner behind your back about his health the problem isn’t the owner or the QB it’s the stubborn coach who had no faith in his own coaching skills to believe he could get a playoff win out of Kirk Cousins. Then you wonder why there are so many injuries in the NFL. Questionable on the injury report used to actually mean that. Now it means “he’s going to play but just not very good cause he’s hurt”.

  48. Dan Reeves was none to happy in Denver when his OC, Mike Shanahan and QB, John Elway worked against his coaching directives.

  49. This story isn’t exactly news. We knew even while Shanahan was still on the job that RG3 had access to the owner. And yes, Shanahan has made his share of ‘anonymous’ leaks to the press over the years. But what RG3 did here was incredibly inappropriate – and that Snyder created an atmosphere where RG3 was given rock star treatment continue to underscore the fact that the man isn’t temperamentally fit to run an NFL franchise.

  51. Griffin’s injury wasn’t caused by called running plays. It was caused by terrible field conditions, conditions that caused at least two other serious non-contact injuries (Chris Clemons, Steven Hauschka) in that 2013 playoff game.

  52. Shanny was an egotiistcal, arrogant sob but he was a brilliant game coach. He was a terrible GM which led to his demise in Denver. His best days are long behind him.

  57. Does this guy think running his mouth and talking tough (he really called up the owner, his boss, and warned him about meeting with another employee?) is going to get him another gig? Shanahan is done. Accept it and move on, rat.

  58. Why is it we only ever hear one side of this story and Shanahan always ends up smelling like a rose? The guy was fired “for cause” by the LA. Raiders. He had issues with Jake Plummer, Albert Haynesworth, Don McNabb and finally RG3, yet it’s everyone else’s fault???? It’s about time some of you clowns wake up and realize Shanny is the problem. It could be argued that RG3 is the best QB he and his goofy son ever had the privilege of coaching.

  62. As much as it pains me to say it, I hope terry and Kim Pegula follow in the steps of Kraft not jones or Snyder. Own the team, make yourself known and fight for the team but let the people you hire do their jobs. If your gm needs to go over things before doing them fine but don’t become the defacto gm, Jones has proven for 20 years he can’t do as well as he thinks

  63. “Jimmy Johnson has two superbowls and Jimmy’s players have the other one.Jerry dont have any claim to those except he owned the team…”

…and hired Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy was the brains behind putting the Super Bow teams together, there is no question about that. But, without Jerry’s money to sign players or the fact that Jimmy was hired by Jerry, those teams might (wouldn’t) not have happened. So yes, Jerry has 3 rings.

  64. It is so fitting that the Great Gimmick is now a Cleveland Dog Pile QB. Cleveland deserves nothing less than the infection that this JERK brings to a team.

  65. Que all the tired “same old Redskins” comments. We all know Dan Snyder is a dummy. This is old news. Old regime. If you think this team isn’t different now, you haven’t been paying attention.

  66. “If he had told me he was hurt, I would have taken him out of the [playoff] game”.
This is 100% untrue. You could see Griffin III out there stumbling around and limping horribly, but you both were dreaming of that story book ending that ending up getting him hurt very badly and thus losing a step. Qb’s in the NFL CAN’T run because they will get busted up. Also, it was known that Griffin couldn’t p[ick up Kyle’s psychobabble offense because he’s not that bring and that offense is too complex.
More then enough blame to go around.

Thanks to Jimmy Johnson. But……the difference is that Jones as the GM actually have football acumen. Snyder is a nerdy rich guy who played fantasy football. He knows nothing about the game.

  69. The working relationship between Shanahan and Griffin went south, but I blame Snyder more than these 2.

I think the much bigger concern with RG3 is not his maturity level, but if he can master a pro-style offense. Otherwise he seems stuck just like Colin Kaepernick, it’s just that his reversal was much faster.

Has he grown? Has he matured?

  70. “Acountability”… A word not in Shanny’s vocabulary.
Let it go already, it was 3 years ago.

  71. Huh?? So Snyder told the QB to ask the Coach to call plays you are comfortable with? Snyder is bad for that?

RG3 and his dad are the ones who demanded to be a dropback QB. Snyder told them to talk to Shanahan. RG3 gets his wish and fails.

    Snyder is to blame?! HUH??

The complete article details other events which point out RG3’s role in this and Shanahan’s that PFT has conveniently omitted. Skins fans are happy with Cousins. RG3 was stupid for asking to change the offense after winning ROY of the year. According to the article, he was jealous that Cousins could play without the read option but he couldn’t effectively.

  72. I kind of feel sorry for RG3 because as a HC, Hue Jackson has a lot in common with Shanahan. Like the Rat, Jackson is a control-freak who has a track record of throwing his players under the bus to provide cover for his own deficiencies.

  73. Shanahan really needs to let it go, seriously. You got paid $35 million and you’re STILL whining, damn!

  74. And I do not blame Dan Snyder, AT ALL. If I own a damn team I’m going to be involved as well and if I pay you $35 million and then I axe you, YOU should be man enough to move on and thank me for paying you so damn well! I would work for Dan Snyder in a heartbeat and any of you deadbeats that claim to be holier than thou is a LIAR! AND you would gladly take the money and any punishment that goes along with it, PERIOD, because you know that those checks don’t bounce!

  75. Al Davis had a bunch of Super Bowl wins too.
But he was stuck on his old ways. It was Jimmy Johnson all the way but Jerry felt he was the reason those teams won. Ha! I’m from Chicago and the same thing happened here with Jordan. Ownership said Championships are won by management. You see how that is working out just like Dallas in Football. Blah blah blah every year. Same coming up tho nice pick at RB

Have to give Gruden a lot of credit going with Cousins cuz if he failed Gruden would have been gone. Hope Cousins is not another Foles one hit wonder.

  76. The fact that a second year QB would do that to a coach is incredible. Can you picture RGme doing this to Ditka or Lombardi?? Shanny should have told him to shut up and sit down after about two minutes. If the coach can’t call the plays he’s not the coach!!! It does appear Snyder has finally wised up (only took him about 10 years!!). I think he knows now to let football guys run the team.

  77. What was his excuse for ending Donovan McNabb’s career?

    Mike likes:

    John Elway and
QBs he and his son had absolute control over.

    And that is it.

  78. No one in football was blaming shanahan for this mess except maybe dan snyder or rg3 and some on his fans. As skins fans we all know our owner sucks…..but we are stuck with him for now. I had alot of respect for shanahan but jeez man let it go. This is old news. You look like a jaded little girl. Other teams are watching and maybe that plays a part to why you are unemployed. You got paid alot of money to help us and all you have done the last year is take shots at our organization on the way out and a year later still.

  79. I don’t understand. How does this make sense as a conspiracy? What probably happened is RGIII complained to ownership and the owner correctly told the player to talk to his coach about the plays. This does not a conspiracy make.

Unless it was coming from Snyder all along…. STRAIGHT TO THE TOP! However, if you are the owner of the team, why conspire with anyone if you don’t like the playbook? Just ask your employee yourself. The idea of a secret meeting between owner and quarterback(which would be necessary had this been an actual conspiracy) to change coaches playbook is pretty comical. It almost sounds like it came from the mind of a paranoid, bitter old man.

Jimmy Johnson has two superbowls and Jimmy’s players have the other one.Jerry dont have any claim to those except he owned the team.Jimmy Johnsons was the brains behind that era of cowboys.Jerry’s brain on football is about the same as mashed potatoes

Johnson needed Jones’ permission to trade Walker. Clearly there are two sides to the story, but if the owner wanted Walker to stay then “The Great Train Robbery” would just be an old movie. That fact alone negates your entire post.

    Why is this not surprising?

Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones will never win anything as long as they own their teams. They’re not really good football people and their egos are enormous.

They also have no idea that there is a salary cap.
    ——————————————————————-

Dan Snyder will always sabotage the Redskins. He and Jerry Jones are two morons who don’t know how to stop trying to run a business they know nothing about.

Just because I bought a barbershop doesn’t mean you want me to cut your hair does it???????

  82. Now Shanahan is out of the NFL, Griffin is in Cleveland and Jay Gruden is coaching Kirk Cousins in Washington….

    ——————-

You could have saved everyone a lot of time by opening the article with this line, then never ever writing another article on the subject.

  83. Lots of people blasting Shanahan for keeping an injured RG3 on the field.

I suspect a lot of these same people blasted Jay Cutler for sitting out the second half of a 2011 playoff loss after injuring his knee.

So which is the correct decision? Do you put an injured player on the bench…..or have him play through it? You can’t have it both ways.

  84. RGIII is as phony as they come.

Shanahan has something RG will never have — Super Bowl rings.

RGIII is a coach killer, that’s all he is.

  85. My response to Griffin would have been “Grab a clipboard and and ask Kirk to come in here so we can discuss his responsibilities as the starting quarterback”

  86. Everyone that is saying “Jerry Jones has 3 Superbowls” needs to stop missing the forest for the trees….had he not meddled & ran Jimmy Johnson out of town, it could have been 5 possibly…now having said that, as a Broncos fan I only hope he is right about Paxton Lynch. Ive been so worried since the draft. If Jerry liked him so much, he’s sure to be a bust!

    —————————————————————

The play with haloti ngata is best example of how frail RG3 is- his chicken legs basically broke in half just from contacting ngata’s belly basically- and BTW this was like 15-20 yards down field where he could have already slid down for the 1st down.

    100% RG3’s fault and avoidable

What was his excuse for ending Donovan McNabb’s career?
    ————————————
Why did Leslie Frazier end McNabb’s career in Minnesota??? Because he was DONE!

Wow, you can’t make this stuff up. Perhaps it wasn’t a conspiracy and it was just that Shanahan’s offense sucked.
    ————————
Nope, his offense wasn’t the problem… Maybe the QB was??? Hmmmm
