Gary Kubiak is “really excited” about Trevor Siemian

With all the chatter regarding Denver quarterbacks focusing on the guys who left (Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler), the broken-glass emergency addition (Mark Sanchez), the flirtation gone nowhere (Colin Kaepernick), and the first-round rookie (Paxton Lynch), no one is talking about the guy who, in theory, could end up winning the job.

He’s Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick in 2015 from Northwestern who has a season in the system and a year of learning from Manning and Osweiler.

“Not many guys are asking about him, but I’m really excited about Trevor,” coach Gary Kubiak told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s got a chance to be a really good player. He knows exactly what he’s doing. He basically took the first group today. With what you guys got to see, he’s practiced very well. I think Trevor has a lot of confidence in himself right now.”

If Siemian has plenty of confidence, he’s keeping his cards close to the vest.

“I tried to learn a lot last year,” Siemian told reporters. “I wasn’t playing a ton but I had 18 in the room and I had Brock, so I was learning from those guys. . . . I’m ready to get back to it and knock a little rust off but I feel good.”

It could be a good thing for Siemian to fly under the radar. There’s a chance he won’t be for long.

There’s a chance he’ll be the starter when the Panthers come to town to start the season.

There is a chance I will win the lottery too.

There is a much better chance that neither of these comes to pass.

  2. Let me be the first one to use Trevor Siemian’s name in the same sentence as Kurt Warner and Tom Brady. I also want to be the first one to use Trevor Siemian’s name in the same sentence as Joe Montana. In fact, I’ll go as far as using Trevor Siemian’s name in the same sentence as every Hall of fame QB. This Fun! Everyone can try this at home!

  3. Siemian’s college career was so mundane even the folks at Northwestern were stunned when he was drafted. He had a few of the preseason garbage time flashes that get neophyte fans excited and give sportswriters the opportunity write another preseason column about potential. Elway’s no fool and neither is Kubiak. If there was really anything there worthy of true excitement the Broncos wouldn’t have spent so much effort looking elsewhere, brought in Sanchez or drafted Lynch.
It’s that time of year (sigh).

  4. Kubiak is promoting competition and nothing else.
For the first time since Manning arrived, The Broncos have an open field in the QB position.
Competition breeds bringing out the very best in players and thereby makes the team better.
    Coaching 101.
Siemian should look good, he has been a student of the offense for a year, compare that to the other guys.
No real story here…..but for us NFL starved fans, we’ll take it.
    Thanks for the story.

  5. Lol! The haters are going to eat their words on Trevor. Truth be told he looked better than Peyton or Brock in camp and preseason last year. His skill set is a perfect fit for Kubes offensive scheme. He also has a far more knowledge on this offense and a year learning from Manning.

  6. Time for Denver fans to admit that Elway screwed up letting Osweiler walk in free agency. Should have at least franchise tagged him for this upcoming season to see how he performs.

  7. People hating on Siemian either haven’t seen him play or just looked at where he was drafted. He is miles ahead of where Osweiler was with the Broncos at this stage in their development. The Broncos are one of the few teams who are not afraid to go with unproven players who were drafted late or not at all. Current players like CJ Anderson and Chris Harris are testament to that. The kid has a strong arm and is the most familiar with Kubiak’s offence who has a history of getting the most out of his qb’s. Don’t sleep on Siemian.

Osweiler was going to walk regardless. And he’s certainly not worth $18M per year. The Texans will regret that contract in year 1.

As for Simien, there were many observers (fans and media alike) who watched training camp and preseason games last year intently and believed that Simien outperformed Osweiler. He’s going to push for the starting job.

There is a reason why Elway is a Super Bowl winning GM.

3 starts in a row Brock couldn’t muster one single point in an entire half of football. The 4th week he put up 3 points in the first half. Elway won’t put up $18 million for that, most good GM’s won’t either. Still, the Broncos went 5-2 with Brock doing nothing more than managing the game and some people think (hope) the Broncos will fall to a 5 or 6 win season. Probably the same people who didn’t think the Broncos had a chance with an ageing QB who couldn’t throw anything other than very short passes.

Doesn’t say much for Lynch who in my opinion should have been no better then a 3rd round pick.

Maybe you should look at OTA reports by the local press. According to them he had good day.

  11. A second year quarterback in the system, beating out Mark Sanchez and a borderline first round rookie quarterback who didn’t line up under center. I could see this happening.

  12. Sanchez Looked Polished but un – inspiring physically, its almost as If Mark Hit his Physical Peak in 2008-2010 and the shoulder surgery really changed his ability to throw. Sieman is young and eager.

  13. Siemian has was certain vibe about him. It’s nothing you can put a finger on other than to say he has that calm unflappable confidence the most great QBs have. For the better part of three years, Oz approached the LoS looking like a kid right before his first roller coaster ride. I’m not holding my breathe that he’ll be the Broncos starter, but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he cobbles out a respectable career as at least an A list backup.

  14. I personally like this guy alot. The Word was that he was the Broncos next big thing. Now with the drafting of Lynch, signing of Buttfumble, Trevor is nothing but camp arm history.

He is a good dude and could start today for about 5 NFL clubs. He simply wasn’t good enough for the Broncos’ standards and that is why Denver has 3 rings ane your team has none.

Good luck Trevor. Stay away from Joketown and Cleveland, you here!

  15. Everyone knew they had a chance with that defense. Everyone was waiting to see if that aging QB was going to lose the game for them.

  16. Siemian was far better than Brock last TC and preseason. Small sample size I know, but the difference was clear. Throws a great ball, is cool under pressure and know where to go with the ball. Simply said he had that “it” factor.

Brock, while a master at meeting with the press, will not come anywhere near meeting expectations in Houston on the field.

  17. When I saw this kid in college I thought he was a first round talent. He reminded me of Elway at Stanford. Both went to brainy schools where the admission requirements were much more stringent than those of the other schools in the conference. His team was totally overmatched every game. I was blown away by Elway’s physical gifts, but with Siemian, it was the mental part. He’s as smart as any QB I’ve seen and he throws a very catchable ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elway saw a little of himself when he drafted Siemian.

  18. Elway, Kubiak, just give the kid a chance to work with the number ones this year so that maybe he has a fair opportunity to prove or disprove himself. I don’t think the GM or Coach gave him that chance when he was competing with Brock. Hopefully, Broncos mgt actually mean what they say and allow this kid to compete equally for the starting job.

See this is why you would never make it as a GM, you’d rather tag a QB with 7 starts and didn’t do anything to keep from losing the starting job from a 39 year old over a guy who proved to be one of the greatest LBs. If Miller didn’t get tagged, you risk him walking for a team who pay what he wants no questions asked. Another thing, Brock just cleared this up that he wasn’t gonna re sign with Denver anyway.

  20. Siemian is going to make it very hard on Sanchez to win the job. He reads thru progressions quickly, has very consistent footwork, anticipates well, and has a serious gun for an arm.

  21. I wouldn’t be surprised if Trevor wins the job. As a rookie coming off an acl tear, he looked great in pre-season. Granted, he was third string, but he looked better than Osweiler who was in year 4 and better than Dysert in year 2 or 3 who was then cut.

He was unflappable and made some very nice throws. You can’t really teach that confidence, and it’s something very important in a qb. The team looks to the qb for the attitude that they can win. Brock didn’t really lift up the team. Siemian may be able yo do so.

Ha, it’d be great if he shined, won the job, Sanchez also looked really good as #2, Lynch progressed a lot, and all of a sudden the media starts talking about Denver having the best QB situation in the league….we would laugh and laugh at all the haters.
