Mark Davis says Las Vegas will “unite the Raider nation”

Getty Images

Commissioner Roger Goodell said little on Tuesday about a potential move of the Raiders to Las Vegas. Raiders owner Mark Davis said plenty.

“I’m excited about it,” Davis said in comments televised on NFL Network. “It’s a new market. It’s got the potential to be a really exciting market. . . . The Raider fan in Northern California get upset a little bit when we talk about going to Los Angeles, and the L.A. fans get a little ticked off at the fans in Northern California, so it seems like Las Vegas is a neutral site that everybody’s kind of bought into. It will unite the Raider nation more than divide it.”

Asked if this means he’s given up on staying Oakland, Davis said, “No.”

And then he said this: “I’ve given my commitment to Las Vegas, and if they can come through with what they’re talked about doing, then we’ll go to Las Vegas.”

So, yeah, it looks like Davis is ready to leave. And it looks like the only way he’ll stay is if Oakland wakes up and puts together a plan sufficiently viable to get at least nine owners to vote against approving a move to Las Vegas.

  1. I feel bad for the fans in Oakland, but the Raiders are one of a few teams that could play literally anywhere, and still have a massive fan base.

Raider Nation is global, not just regional like almost all other teams.

  2. A great business move and a smart one, Vegas is ready for the Raiders.

Vegas has a strong Raider fan base as well.

Vegas Raiders 2018, and a possible Super Bowl as well.

    Well Done Owner Davis.

  3. Unite Raider Nation? Say goodbye to home field advantage. Your a fool Mark Davis. Fans will travel for awhile, but that’s gets expensive. Then half the stadium will be visiting teams fans. Just like Dallas, just like San Diego. Work on your silent count Derek.

  4. Mark Davis constantly craps on Norcal Raiders fans by deed and this idea that moving to Vegas will “unite” those fans with out of area fans is comically ignorant.

  5. I visited Mexico City on vacation a few months ago, and I was surprised how many Raider fans are down there.

    Raider Nation is also international.

  6. As a long time Raider fan and native of Los Angeles, I’m very excited by the potential of the Raiders in Vegas. I’d much rather drive or fly there for a game than Oakland (place is a dump).

If they built a really great stadium this has the potential to be a great move all around. Great facility, easy and fun weekend for Raiders fans from NorCal, SoCal and all over.

More appealing draw for free agents with no state income tax…

Vegas is actually closer to the LA fan base than Oakland is… Besides, have any of you even been to a game at the O.Co stadium? Besides sewage it has so many problems, horrible design, way to narrow walk ways with merc. and food vendors, too few and too small bathrooms. It’s a nightmare. We deserve better as fans.

  7. Raiders would be wise to go to Vegas. It’s a gold mine for any pro team that moves there especially Oakland which is a short plane ride away and already has a tremendous fan base. spirit airlines is advertising $79 fares from Oakland to Vegas.

  8. I hear a lot of “get a deal done in Oakland” in many comment posts.

Fine, back it up with a dose of reality then.

Vegas has proposed a viable stadium deal that has moved the sticks forward.

Oakland is still on their own 20.

  9. Nevada does NOT have a state income tax.
The Raiders’ players get an immediate 13% bonus for money earned in their home games. For a guy making a modest $4 million/year that works out to an extra $250K in his pocket.

Similarly, players on visiting teams (who are taxed in the states where they play their games) also get a bonus.

The players would have to be nuts if they don’t cheer this move on.

  10. You Raider fans just want to see shows and gamble and have too many martinis. Ya’ll will be too hung over to see the game – the stadium will be half empty! The players will be in such sorry shape they’ll be wobbling around the field by the end of the first quarter. Pirates in Vegas. Now if Stabler were still around I could see it.

  11. SAD JUST LIKE HIS DAD. I’m a NEW ORLEANS SAINTS FAN. THERE IS NO LOYAL FAN BASE BETTER THAN THE SAINTS. But RAIDERS FAN ARE DAM CLOSE 2ND to NONE. I FEEL FOR THEM WHEN I THINK OF DA RAIDERS I THINK OF OAKLAND. Sad day sad day.

  12. What a slap in the face to long time Raider fans in Oakland, i feel bad for them, loyal bunch even during this last horrifying past decade. Buster Brown has really started trouble this time. Not good.

  13. This is sad. Oakland fans deserve better, but they won’t get it from Oakland money. The NFL is all about profit, and Vegas just has more money.

As a Pats fan, I will always think of the Oakland Raiders, and frown when I hear them called anything else.

  14. Those that don’t get it. Las Vegas population is 1980 was 250,000. Population in 2016 is over 1 million. Where did they come from? California #1… next question on the fan base?

  15. As a season ticket holder I must admit that Mark Davis is right. If the Raiders must move Las Vegas is the best compromise available. And since there is no effort on the part of Oakland’s power brokers to get a stadium deal then move they must. Oakland politicians clearly aren’t willing to do a thing to help keep the Raiders. In fact all they do is put up obstacles. Like signing a ten year lease with tge A’s making it impossible to tear the coliseum down. Like tripling the Raiders rent. Like refusing to even offer land at a reasonable price. Oakland politicians will be responsible for the Raiders leaving and maybe giving there situation it is the right thing for them to do. Just be honest about it and quit with the “we will do everything possible” garbage. Unless someone like Larry Rllison steps up the Raiders are moving. So why not Vegas? It’s a lot more fun than traveling to LA or San Antonio. Raider fans need to give Davis a break as he is the only one that gas made an honest effort to get a deal done in Oakland yet he gets all the anger. If your pissed tell those responsible and it ain’t Mark Davus. So on to Vegas and let the party begin!

  16. Sorry to feel bad for the fans of Oakland. When all of their professional sport teams outside the Warriors have some of the most pathetic stadium in the league.

  17. Oakland needs to “wake up”?!

They’ve already woken up when they decided to not cave to multi-millionaires and their dumb desires for sports castles. The city of Oakland is cash-strapped, and STILL paying off $180MM on the coliseum renovations from the mid 90s.

Davis is seeking over $700 in tax money from the Vegas deal. He’s not looking for a “new market” , he’s looking for a handout. We just got to wait and see if Vegas is dumb enough to give one.

  18. Vegas is perfect for the Raiders. Not only will they have a home field advantage with the fans that will come from all over, but just think of the home field advantage it will have when other teams roll in to town and all the distractions they will have to fend off. (casinos all night party’s and hookers) #RaiderNation

  19. He’s right. I know a lot of Raider fans and only the ones in Oakland are very mad about the possible move (understandably so).

The ones outside of Oakland range from pretty cool with it to super excited. Las Vegas is the one city that can take in the Raiders while 1) not making original fans too mad and 2) vastly expanding the team’s fan base.

I’m no Raider fan but this Vegas move will catapult the Raiders to a new level in the national consciousness.

No joke– One of the biggest positive moves in NFL history.

  20. Bay Area TV market is #6 by size and #1 by median income, next door Sacramento is #20 by size and #40 by median income. Vegas market is #40 by size and #80 by median income. The corporate base in the Bay Area is multiple times broader and deeper than Vegas corporate base, which is solely based on casino/tourism. People get a misconception that Vegas is a large market because everything is centered around tourism perception, but it is a fact that it is a small market with a very cyclical economy due to it being completely reliant on out of town travel, which gets hit hard in every single economic downturn.

  21. Oakland is definitely a dump. And not just the stadium. When I travel to home games from L.A., I feel like the area around the stadium is even worse each trip. More abandoned buildings, homeless people, crackheads bugging you for money, etc.

The #1 thing on the list of “Things to do in Oakland” is…. drive across the bridge into SF.

  22. So many low information people knocking the move who don’t see the big picture. Davis and the league are getting a free $700 million. Who in their right mind wouldn’t sign on the dotted line? Plus there’s far more disposable income in LV than Oakland where people can barely pay their rent. Also as a Latino I know the Raiders have traditionally had a huge Latino following and Nevada happens to have one of the largest Latino populations. Selling out will be easy especially with all the weekend warriors flying in from LA and Oakland. Oakland officials have had 10 years to come together with the Raiders and they could care less. V-E-G-A-S!!!!!!#

  23. “Oakland politicians clearly aren’t willing to do a thing to help keep the Raiders. In fact all they do is put up obstacles. Like signing a ten year lease with tge A’s making it impossible to tear the coliseum down. Like tripling the Raiders rent. Like refusing to even offer land at a reasonable price.”

The 10 year lease with the A’s includes an out if the Raiders develop a stadium plan.

The rent tripled from $900k to $3 million, that is like your apartment rent tripling from $75 to $225. It is still a VERY cheap rent.

The last proposal from Oakland offered a cheap land lease for 60 acres of the south coliseum site. Davis has not taken that and run with it, no plan has been presented despite the land offer and investors lining up.

It is one thing to say that Oakland/Alameda County have not offered up pure cash to build the stadium, but let’s not put up some false and misleading statements about other points in the process.

  24. At this point, I don’t care how or where they get a stadium. Just get one! The coliseum is toilet bowl. I was there for the Christmas Eve game last year, and the rust holes in the stands literally had plates welded over them and there were buckets placed around the stadium to catch the leaking water.

I firmly believe the Raiders BELONG in Oakland. But if that city isn’t willing to play ball (and nothing they’ve said or done to this point would leave me to believe otherwise), then go to Vegas and have fun!

I’m a RAIDER fan, not a “city” fan.

    #RaiderNation

  25. Oakland Booty moves in and gets matched up with Las Vegas Glitz.

Good match, since the people of Oakland have far too much more serious pressing demands for critical social services than to spend their monies on a new home for the Raiders.

  26. Basically he is confirming he wants to stay in Oakland as in, ok this is my last and final statement until I make another one.
I say he is blowing smoke, he knows he is blowing smoke and would only do vegas as a last resort.

The thing that I don’t get, Vegas should be running at him with open arms and yet they too will go through the ‘who the hell will pay for this? Where is the money coming from?

Everyone wants a stadium. no one wants to pay for it including Vegas.

  27. No one other than Jerry J builds his own stadium. The Wilfs in Minny kicked in about 700 mil and the rest of the new stadium is from other sources.
Davis said he would kick in 500 mil, and yes the rest has to come from other. The other is the problem.

  28. What is the cost to Oakland if the Raiders leave?

    1. Pride. And season ticket holders will be sad.

    2. ???

Will there be any economic loss?
Oakland residents will spend money on something else.
Maybe the loss of some low paying jobs?

At least, it would be safer going into a new stadium in Las Vegas versus that dump in Oakland where you have to worry about being knifed walking through the parking lot.
    ————————–
That’s not accurate. The area around the stadium is scary, but that parking lot is a fun place to be on game day. You won’t find much trouble unless you look for it.

  30. Like everyone else has said, Raider Nation is massive…. Doesn’t really matter where they play, they’ll have fans. I feel terrible for the fans in Oakland that have supported the Raiders for years in that garbage stadium (I’d say hands down bottom 3 in all of pro sports), and just when their team starts to turn it around they are talking about taking off…. I’d really like to see the city figure this one out.

  31. Many of the fans have left California anyway. I live in the Bay Area. More than half of the “fans” are band wagon jumpers and would change their support to another team from year to year. The real Raider fans will still be Raider fans after this move, just like the real Niner fans are still fans even after their move out of San Francisco…. and the coaching changes…. and the owner opening his mouth…. ugh…. the last one hurts the most.

  32. Las Vegas will be a great market for the Raiders. It is a high growth cash cow. With Sheldon Adelson and all the casinos, there is money out the wazoo. Hopefully they get the financing approved ASAP so construction can begin. The Raiders have needed a new stadium for at least 10 years. No progress has been made in Oakland. To make things worse, the A’s seem content on staying at the Coliseum. Hopefully 2016 is the Raiders last season in Oakland.

    ——————–

Just another comment that’s factually dead wrong!

In order to finance construction of the $1.15 billion stadium, Arlington voters approved a $325 million bond that raises the city’s sales tax by a half-cent, hotel occupancy tax by 2 percent and car rental tax by 5 percent. The NFL contributed $150 million towards the stadium with the Cowboys paying the remaining amount.

    Sound familiar?

With stadium activity not only devoted to Cowboy games, the city is paying down its debt faster than expected, seven years ahead of schedule and if that trend continues, it could save taxpayers millions of dollars.

What do you think the activity level year round will be in Vegas?

The deal in Vegas for the Raiders is similar, with a higher amount coming from the public in the form of a…yes, tourist tax.

JJ did not solely build his own stadium, because of this the people of Arlington are the benefactors.

    ==================

All of that is true but discounts the fact that unlike when the Rams left LA the NFL is not abandoning the Bay Area as a market, there is still a team there. Additionally Raider fans did not abandon their allegiance when the team moved to LA and Vegas is less than 50 miles further away from Oaktown than LA and far cheaper and easier to fly in and out of

  35. Ok, moving the team from a hard core city like Oakland with a very hard core devoted fans means you are not a sellout how?

LOL at the Raider fan base that uses tarps as their basic home shelter!!!

  36. No. Actually, it won’t unite anything.
You’ll lose a fair amount of your Bay Area fans like your dad did in’82. You’ll keep the ones that think spending a couple of grand to see the team in Vegas makes them players. While their kids go without new shoes. Seriously. That’s what it will be. A bunch of uneducated zealots from the Bay with misplaced priorities.
After them you’ll have jet set LA clowns thinking they’re setting a trend.
And then you’ll have the desperate gamblers from Vegas.
Good luck with all that. I’m out.

  37. Sheeple- This is not happening. This is a smoke screen to twist the arms of the Oakland elected officials for a new stadium.

And by look for it, you mean walk into the game wearing a different team’s jersey?

Be honest, (and more and more stadiums have these problems these days, but none more so than OAK, SF, NYJ/NYG, BAL)

    It’s a bunch of undesirables.

  39. But does Las Vegas have the demographics to really support an NFL team?

  40. Wherever there is someone getting stabbed … there is a Raider fanbase.

  41. The Jim Carrey Dumb and Dumber haircut is over, Davis. That look is an embarrassment to your father and millionaire’s everywhere.

    I mean, seriously…

  42. Never want them to leave Oakland.

Having said that, a move seems pending.

Vegas.. so small! Dependent on transient customers..admittedly there are always a lot, but seems hard to get a loyal fan base.

  43. A move to Las Vegas would be great for rich greedy owners but the fans are really gonna be screwed! All the tickets are gonna be bought up by ticket brokers & casinos leaving the average fan struggling to get a ticket at a descent price. It’s already outrageously expensive to stay in Vegas as it is now and with the proposed additional tourist tax Sin City is gonna be raping us fans. Plus I don’t see the ability to sustain a local fan base. I have a feeling that games will lose the home field advantage similar to what the Charger experience when the Raiders, Steelers, Green Bay,etc….. Play them.

    STAY IN OAKLAND!

  44. Translation: We are tuning our backs once again on the loyal fans of Oakland but they are too drunk and broke to care and will not remember where we move to.

  45. I have NO ISSUES with OUR Raiders moving to Vegas…so longs they KEEP the Raider name and colors. I have heard of a petition going around in the Vegas area about Las Vegas people wanting to change the name AND the colors.

    I really hope not..

    ———————
There are loud drunks in every stadium. Last year there was a guy wearing a Steelers jersey during the Chiefs game, and he caught some verbal abuse, but nobody shanked him.

  47. I hate that Mark said “Las Vegas will unite Raider Nation”. First off, Raider Nation is ALREADY united no matter where we go. But second, if anything, I think it would possibly have a negative effect in Vegas because there will be a lot of tourists that will go to the games in Vegas who have other teams as their favorites. It won’t be the same as playing in Oakland where the whole stadium is nothing but die hard Raider fans. But I hope I’m wrong if they do go to Vegas.

  48. Raiders are fake. They are a one night stand coming soon to a trailer park near you and they will move to the next highest bidder. They have no geographic commitment and could care less about who roots for them. They are ladies of the night and their bodies are always for sale.
