Report: Manziel is “even more reckless” with his drug problem

Getty Images

On one hand, Johnny Manziel currently isn’t in the NFL, and quite possibly never will be again. So his activities aren’t directly relevant to the NFL.

On the other hand, Manziel was a first-round draft pick who started eight games over two NFL seasons and who has washed out of the league due to off-field issues and a chronic unwillingness to fully commit to being a professional football player. His story continues to be intriguing.

It’s also sad and depressing. The latest comes from TMZ, which reports that “Manziel has become even more reckless with his drug problem recently — even blowing lines in front of people he barely knows.”

TMZ also cites unnamed sources close to Manziel who say that he “is going to die unless something changes soon.” Another source said that friends have confronted Manziel about his drinking and drug use, and that “[h]e flipped out and would not hear it.”

Manziel’s father expressed concern back in February that Manziel would not make it to his next birthday if he doesn’t get help. Since then, the situation apparently has gotten worse, not better.

  1. Johnny Trainwreck. Yes, it’s a sad story but I think the reason so many people are disgusted by him is because he had a life about 99.99% of us on this board could only DREAM about and instead he chooses to be an idiot. If this story is accurate he’s going to have to change his ways or what his dad said will come to pass. Sad, but he has nobody to blame but himself. Sounds like he needs an intervention.

  2. “On one hand, Johnny Manziel currently isn’t in the NFL, and never will be again.”

    Fixed it for you.

  3. Seems like the type of guy that richly serves all the bad things that will soon happen to him. Just hoping he deosn’t ruin any innocent peoples lives along the way.

  4. I remember Len Bias like it was yesterday. Practically everyone was floored when they heard the news. I didn’t believe it. Sadly, with Johnny it’s only a matter of when unless he gets help. I read the TMZ article. From what it sounds like, that’s not gonna happen and we may not have to hear about him any longer pretty soon. Unlike Len Bias, nobody will be surprised.

  5. This story should stay in the forefront of people’s attention.
People need to be reminded of what arrogance will get you- Destruction.

  6. If his family is reading this they should camp out on his lawn. Don’t let him go. Fight fight fight. Don’t let go of him. It’s his choice and will, but be with him.

  7. How much money can he have left?
Something has to give when he runs out of money. If his rich parents are supporting him, that won’t help matters.

  8. So are we all going to just laugh at the guy, or can he be involuntarily committed? I was one of those who saw this coming a mile away and also have no sympathy for druggies and those who waste their talents, but at this point we hardly need the guy to die to prove our point. See also: Irsay.

  9. Cocaine is a hell of a drug. He won’t straighten out until he hits rock bottom. First one is loss of career, second is loss of money, last one will be a close call with death.

  10. Just over 2 years ago NFL guru, Gil Brandt vouched for Johnny’s high character when he advocated for him to be selected as the first pick of the 2014 Draft. How’s that high character looking now Gil?

  11. Cleveland shouldn’t have been so quick to blame everything on Colt McCoy (instead of the terrible receiving corps).

    It’s ALLLLLLLLL the quarterback’s fault.

Teams love to blame everything on quarterbacks even when the roster is devoid of any receiving depth and quality.

  12. Another source said that friends have confronted Manziel about his drinking and drug use, and that “[h]e flipped out and would not hear it.”

    ***********

Eh, I guess they see the end of the gravy train coming, and would like to see him sucker at least one more team into signing him.

  13. The problem is that until he decides that he needs to sober up, nothing short of a straitjacket will stop him. I know several alcoholics and until they hit rock bottom and decided to get help, nobody could change their minds. Some don’t even change after they hit bottom. As to Manziel’s money, he comes from a rich family and I’m sure he has plenty from that source.

  14. All joking aside, it’s sad to watch someone fall apart like this. The guy had a chance that so many people would give anything for, yet he has snorted it all away.

  15. Parents are expressing concern only out of embarrassment. Where were they 10 yrs ago? 15 years ago? Where were they when that little boy needed them?

It all starts in the home, from day 1.

  16. Mental health care in this nation is atrocious. He can’t be committed unless he poses at threat to the general public. Even then it’s just usually for 48 hrs. Football or not, this kid needs help, bad. Both for his addictions and mental health. The family can do nothing. At this stage in the game they cannot force him to do anything.

It’s getting to the point he would just run away from them if they camped out. Sounds like if something does not happen soon there is going to be a real sad sad headline about him

  17. He’s not going to die anytime soon… Charlie Sheen was doing twice as many drugs and still reporting to work every day. Manzeil is a lightweight in the words of drugs.

Todd Marinovitch was shooting up before games and holding down a starting job. Now that’s a real drug addict worth writing about.

  18. I always find it embarrassingly pathetic when people talk about ‘how many people would give anything to play football’.

Some people never grow up or have any dimension to their personality.

  19. Only step you have to get perfect is the first one and Johnny, clearly has difficulty with that. Until he admits defeat, gives in and surrenders to win he (or any other alcoholic/addict) will not change and will not get better, only worse.

I agree that he needs help but it is not illegal in this country to self destruct. He has free will and in order for him to be “forced” into treatment there would have to be a law preventing the expression of self destructive behavior.

Our society gives people freedoms – the downside of this is our society gives people the freedom to make bad choices and ruin their lives.

  21. No where in this world is it illegal to self destruct. But if it’s so obvious a person is going along that path isn’t it reasonable to realize he/she may not be in touch with reality ? In that instance I believe it should be legal for someone to step in and take charge in the best interest of the individual. Just my opinion.

  22. I know this is an unpopular opinion. NOT EVERY DRUG USER ENDS UP A JUNKIE. Health wise Johnny will be fine. He will probably ruin his career, but I doubt he is going to die. I spent the majority of my 20’s living the exact life he is now. Partying for days on end, doing any drug I got my hands on, blowing lines with strangers, etc. Then one day I decided I was bored with that life and haven’t gone back. I have no ill health effects as a result of it. The biggest problem for Johnny will be when he wants to stop and realizes after all the money he spent and all the drugs, and all the parties, that he has no real friends.

  23. The problem with him isn’t “Addiction” the problem is “addiction triggered by being BiPolar”.

JFooseball has a serious mental illness issue & until that is treated nothing will change.

  24. he’s forever linked too my @cleveland browns
ugh what he needs like all feens, drug abusers/addicts
HE NEEDS AND AZZ WHOOPING IN PUBLIC TOO COMPLETELY EMBARRASS HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY SO HE CAN WAKE UP
“nothing worse then when a drug addict and or wild partier embarrasses his friends and family multiple times too point he needs a group azz whooping too either wake him or themselves up too the bad things they are doing or danger there putting themselves in
THIS IS MOST OF HIS FAMILY’s FAULT THEY ENABLED HIM SINCE BRTH KID NEVER WORKED FOR ANYTHING IN HIS LIFE
money and family fam got him where he his and Mike Evans lol

  25. Strangely, it is surprising to read here and realize how few people know anything about his real problem. Maybe, if they just acknowledge that he has a disease it would help. I’m not betting on that, however.

  26. Johnny Trainwreck is no longer intriguing!!! Let him go quietly into the night!

  27. You know what? I’m not sad. I don’t “pray” for him, that’s his job. Dude has never had a job before so why think he’ll do this one. Punk needs to finally get some tough love from his family.

  28. As a person who lost his grandfather, father, brother and sister to alcohol and drug addiction you want to go give this guy a hug and then hit him in the head with a baseball bat. That is the frustration that every one feels when thinking about a family member who has passed or who is trying their hardest to die. I remember my brother saying he would rather be dead than sober and he got his wish. It is so hard to understand the logic of a person who is so caught up in alcohol and drugs, and therefore, it is almost impossible to help them, still care for them, while you are watching them die. Unfortunately, this sad episode is playing out in prime time in everyone’s living room not just in the privacy of his family and friends. I just wish I could tell him that if he knew what he was doing to those around him, if he cares about anyone or anything to do it for them. Fake it till you make it and then keep it up for your self. As everyone here can hate on Johnny, I can only sit here while my eyes well up with tears for him.

  29. jgo304

    BINGO.

Bipolar disorder does not start being evident until the late teens , early 20 s. It fits exactly when he started riding with one wheel off the track so to speak

  30. “On one hand, Johnny Manziel currently isn’t in the NFL, and quite possibly never will be again. So his activities aren’t directly relevant to the NFL.”

end of story, roll curtain and now lets stop hearing about this bum unless he signs an offer sheet with a team and becomes relevant NFL news again.

  31. Johnny “Can’t Play Football” is neither an NFL player, nor will he ever be again. No more Manziel articles please. Leave the coverage of his demise to TMZ, the channel of the Kartrashians, Kanye, Bruce, and all the other dopes that no one cares about at PFT.

  32. Did anyone click on the TMZ article link and see the pic of him? He looks much skinnier which isn’t surprising with blow. But man, this dude is heading to a bad fate. I really hope he gets the help he needs.

  33. There are plenty of NFL stories out there similar to this kid’s. I don’t understand why he is still getting constant media time while the others are being ignored?

He made his decision awhile back. Time to let this story go. At this point Manziel is simply a blatant waste of oxygen.

  34. You know what’s sadder?

He used whatever brains he had to get a 32 on the Wonderlic and be exempt from the NFL Substance Abuse program.

Also, I don’t mean to make his father Paul into a bad parent, but why aren’t Johnny’s parents in his life enough? Why aren’t they flying to wherever he’s at, take him home, and then work with him?

There are parents that do that even when their kids are above 18 and don’t care about embarrassment. Regardless of what you can tell me, I am not convinced that his parents were as involved as they should have been.

  35. His parents enabled him. He is enabled by his money. Go into court to get access to his money to cut him off and get him in rehab.

  36. I don’t know – I see all the resources everyone wants to expend to save Johnny Dirtball from himself and I’d rather spend them on someone who earned it.

Homeless vets or vets with PTSD issues and the like.

Not someone who had it all and threw it away. Rather have it go towards someone who had it taken from them instead.

  37. Come on you gotta listen to me
Lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be

  38. The party will really be over after he blows through his NFL money. I know his parents have money but they’re not going to support his drug habits and that’s when it will get really scary for him. If you’re addicted and don’t have the means anymore to get your next high it’s not going to end well.

  39. It is sad that someone who has been so lucky can not see it.

Now it’s time to not care anymore.

  40. I no longer poke fun at Manziel. I don’t feel sorry for him or any empathy. For society’s sake, I hope he doesn’t take any innocents down with him. I certainly hope he gets his life together at some point. Football is way down the priority list.

  41. @godfatherd
“Health wise Johnny will be fine.”

Really? Guy’s already lost a lot of weight. That’s a health problem right there. Losing weight rapidly can be just as bad for you as gaining it rapidly (sometimes worse). He doesn’t even have much weight to lose, but he’s finding a way. This doesn’t seem to be a typical drug-and-party situation. The guy is melting down. I was never a fan of his, but it still sucks to see this.

  42. …..everyone who’s had to deal with a drunk or junkie can only do one thing…..you just become a witness to the self destruction after you’ve had enough trying to help them. It’s reality. He’s young and in relatively good shape but after that last photo, he’s gonna tank real quick. No one should be shocked when we hear the final news……………

  43. Seems like he should be getting random drug tests from the NFL. Sure to fail all of those and be suspended for quite a while if he ever came back.

I think it is strange that the NFL still schedules tests when a player is no longer under contract with a NFL team, and counts it as a missed/positive test if they do not go take the test.

    ————————————–

You’re correct. Only problem with your statement is that there is only one person who can convince Johnny to seek treatment. And that’s Johnny. HE doesn’t see it as a disease. And until he does …

  46. This IS intriguing. I don’t apologize for having a perverse interest in watching this guy’s exploits. He’s a public persona who’s put his life out there for all to consume. I’m consuming it. The people who claim to be tired of him don’t speak for me. This is a real life saga that’s far more exciting than anything the Kardashians can come up with. I can’t get behind all the self-righteous judgement. Manziel is entertaining me!

  47. Another source said that friends have confronted Manziel about his drinking and drug use, and that “[h]e flipped out and would not hear it.”

Nothing/no one can help him if he doesn’t want it.

  48. In a way I feel sorry for JFF. But then again, it’s his own fault for not seeking help with his addiction. Even Gronk knows when to stop. This is about Johnny as a person now; not a professional athlete.

  49. He’s just doing his preparation for his future career as Johnny GovernorOfTexas.

  50. So his problem isn’t actually that he’s a drug addict his problem is that he suffers from bi-polar depression who just happens to also do drugs. I was married to someone who did everything Manziel did (short tempered, over dramatic, lost their good job because they just didn’t care) and they never did a drug once and that’s what she was diagnosed with. The easiest way to get them to snap was to try to help them, the easiest way to get them to calm down after they freak out was to enable them.

The only people here doing right by Manziel right now are his agents his ex girlfriend and the Cleveland Browns organization for washing their hands of him. The only way he’s going to get to the point where he might realize he needs help is if he looks up and sees that there’s no one there to cater to his temper tantrums and drug use. Unfortunately since he’s famous that might not be for awhile or ever since there will always be someone who’ll enable him just because they want to hang with Johnny Football.

  51. Wonder if he’s doing heroin or some derivative? Definitely seems to have a death wish.

  52. To anybody who says/thinks that Manziel’s family needs to step up: How do you think he turned out this way in the first place?

Do you really think the family that created this kind of dysfunction and allowed any mental illness to go untreated is now going to magically effect a cure?

Get real! Yes, he needs help, but he also needs to stay as far away from that sick dynamic as possible.

  53. He’s a grown man, he chooses his hell, save your tears for those who never had a chance in the first place.

  54. It seems to me Johnny M is the poster child for why the NFL shouldn’t allow players to exit college early. It’s a matter of maturity. Granted there are many young men with exceptional maturity, but it seems to me it’s a recipe for disaster to drop millions of dollars and all that praise & attention on a very young guy. It’s hard enough for a graduate to handle it, but a guy that young just invites trouble. I realize jumping to the NFL early is only one year in most cases, but I remember how rapidly I matured in those few years of my early 20’s. One year wasn’t the same as one year today in my 50’s. In addition to chronological years, maturity also comes from actually finishing college. Anyone who did knows their senior year was a watershed year and they came out much different that they were at the beginning of that year. It’s not a stretch to say many will start their last year of college as a boy and finish as a man.

  55. How much money could this guy possibly have left? If he parties as consistently and as hard as everyone says he’s gotta be heading towards the end of his savings. I’d imagine he wasn’t frugal on things like his house, car, clothes, meals etc. before his downward spiral took over. Or maybe he’s got plenty of money from his rich daddy.

When you have money and love cocaine it isn’t a slow and gradual increase in use. He probably buys in bulk and his tolerance is increasing faster than he expects.

  56. I feel bad for the guy but from a purely football perspective, lets be real; his game was NEVER going to work in the NFL, he’s just not of NFL quality.

  57. His behavior isn’t all that different from a lot of those guys who we learned, posthumously, had CTE. Considering the amount of football Manziel played growing up and the way he played, the effect of too many shots to the head certainly shouldn’t be discounted. He’s definitely awfully young to be showing signs of CTE but then, there was a time when somebody under 50 developing Type II diabetes was considered rare.

  58. Yeah, well, where were they a year ago when his problem was obvious?

    Oh, right. Partying with him.

That’s what sucks the most about enabling. You’re there with them as they fall, but when you’re there for them, they have plenty of ammo to throw back at you. It’s practically impossible to turn around and show him the mirror when you’ve been hanging with him all along.

    Speaking from experience.

The best they can do is hope friends who haven’t been riding his coattails all this time to step up and talk the talk, but chances are they already walked away.

But, you never know – maybe he’ll be one of the lucky ones that ODs and survives. Happened to my niece, and it made her sober.

YES, blame everyone else around the addict for the addict’s choices.

  61. Ryan Leaf is not laughing, gloating, tapdancing or otherwise celebrating Manziel’s epic failure; he’s reached out multiple times and is sad and frustrated that he hasn’t been able to extract some positive from his own life filled with screwups, in preventing someone following his path to misery.

Leaf was Manziel before Manziel was even born; he had at least as many waiting for him to fall hard because of what an arrogant, disrespectful feces stain he was, but he’s come a long way and finally learned from some of life’s worst azz-kickings.

  62. Can’t stand the Manziel stories, but this is like watching a train wreck. I don’t care about people who lose control due to drugs/alcohol. There’s always that point in all of our lives where there’s at least a moment we are still in complete control of the decisions we make prior to succumbing to the powerful effects of those drugs. While it’s obvious that the effects of drugs are cumulative and build to that point of no return, people like Manziel don’t have the will, strength, courage to fight those temptations despite knowing very well the dangers. Let him go. If he turns his life around, good for him. If not, oh well.

  63. I don’t know. Could all of this be due to the fact that deep down Johnny doesn’t really want to play football or maybe even not be a star?
