Packers “being smart” with Jordy Nelson

AP

Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson’s return from last year’s torn ACL has progressed well in recent months and Nelson said in April that he had resumed running routes.

Nelson also said that he hoped he’d be participating in OTAs with his teammates, but the Packers haven’t yet given him the green light to take part in all drills. Nelson is doing individual work and coach Mike McCarthy said that the team will evaluate things each week to determine if Nelson is ready to do more.

While Nelson would like that, he doesn’t sound like he’ll be too surprised if a full return to action waits until the summer.

“We don’t want to push it too much because we’re still in May,” Nelson said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Our goal is obviously September. Obviously they’re being smart. They’re probably doing the right thing; obviously you want to push the limits.”

Given how long Nelson has been in the Packers offense and how much the Packers missed him last season, keeping things low key for as long as possible seems the likeliest course of action in Green Bay.

  1. Makes me giggle about Packers being smart. When was the last time the Packers are smart about anything? They’re the dumbest team on earth bc they don’t know how to use players. This is why Rodgers and the rest choke every time.

  2. Wishing for a full recovery for Jordy.

One of the classiest guys to ever put on a Packer uniform.

  3. Take your time Jordie, you’re no spring chicken anymore. It’s the twilight of career….. just like most of your roster.

    Average football.

    For Hayseeds.

  4. Sure they are….

Too Bad they aren’t being smart about free agency…. Aaron Rodgers is the Best player in the league! But only has 1 Superbowl….that would be different if they took advantage of free agency the way Seattle did, New England did, Denver did….

  5. We need this guy back ASAP. I’m a little worried about how exposed Aaron was last year. He’s had superstar talent around him throughout his career but he wasn’t able to step up and make the team better without Jordy. That was clear by his career lows pretty much straight across the board.

But, how effective will Jordy be at 31 and coming off a major knee injury? Obviously, he’ll never be 100% but maybe he can bring some respect back to our passing game? I sure hope so because I can’t watch to many more seasons like last year. That team took me back to the 1970’s.

Well I seem to remember Rodgers winning at least one SB in recent history….. Something the Vikings have failed to accomplish in the team’s entire history….

  7. After he dropped the onside kick in the 2015 NFC Chokingship game will he ever be the same???? Why not? Who isn’t looking for an old, slow receiver with hands of stone to save their team?????

  8. With a healthy Jordy, I think the Pack can fend off Chicago and Detroit for 2nd place in the division once again this year…

  9. I love Jordy Nelson. He’s one of my favorite players I’ve ever seen play the game. His demeanor, his attitude, and his work ethic are just astonishing. And who can’t love his smile? It says “Hi, I’m a farm boy at heart”. Class act.

Don’t kid yourself. The Packers are the favorites with win the NFC North again this season. In fact that are in discussion for making it to the SB. The Vikings…..not so much.

  11. Jordy Nelson means a lot to the Packer’s offense, with him in the line up the Packers only lost once to the Vikings in his last 11 games. Without him, the Packers went 1-1 last season. Big difference. Yet somehow the Vikings fans will hold on to the 1-1 and predict the dominance is over, Jordy will show them different.

  12. After not catching a single pass last year, he had the same impact for the Packers as Treadwell did for the Vikings last year. There’s no doubt, Jordy will make a bigger impact on the Packers than Treadwell will for the Vikings this season.

Combine that with the fact that Lacy will improve upon his last years stats, by a greater margin than AP for the Vikings, and there’s no doubt that the Packers offense will be considerably more formidable than the Vikings.

As for the defenses, the Packers gave up a mere 1.3 more PPG than the Vikings last year. Both defenses should be better than last year, so even if the Vikings have widened the margin, it won’t be by a significant margin.

Combine these three factors, and it’s easy to see why the vast majority of pundits believe the Packers will be back in forst place at the end of the season.

  13. Smart thing would be to trade him, try to get back someone who can tackle.

  14. As a Viking fan, I want nothing but 100% health when the season begins for both squads. Regardless its going to take Jordy a handful of games to get back to speed.

  15. The Vikings fans love talking trash until they realize — once again — their team won’t win anything.
How inept are the Vikings? Here’s an example: The best QB the Vikings have ever had was a 40 year old Brett Favre whom the Packers had shown the door.

If the NFL ever decided to down-size and get rid of teams who are perennial losers, the Vikings would be among the first teams to go.

Slam the Packers all you want, Vikings fans. Jealousy is a horrible thing to live with, so Packers fans understand why you feel as you do.

And feel free to stop by Lambeau any time and take a look at the 13 championship trophies the Packers have won.

  16. In Milwaukee, we consider this headline an oxymoron.

  17. With the 2nd ranked WR corps in the NFL, and a revived Lacy, I have no worries. The competition for roster spots among this group will be fun to watch.

  18. If only he used the “special vitamins” that Beatyerson used to come back from the injury to nearly set a rushing record…

  19. The best QB the Vikings have ever had was a 40 year old Brett Favre whom the Packers had shown the door.
    ===========
What’s funny is Favre had his BEST season EVER in Minnesota when he was 40. Why does that say about the two teams? Just imagine how great Favre would have been if he played in MN his whole career? He would’ve won more than one Super Bowl that for dang sure!

  20. The fact is as soon as he is cleared to practice, he’ll be practicing. Coaches don’t do that, his doctors do. A more honest statement would be “he’ll play when he’s ready.” Very few people could go back to professional football after 8-9 months. The math says he’ll start practicing later in training camp.

The more important math says he has $6 million guaranteed reasons to be sure he is healthy before returning. With an $8 million dollar unguaranteed contract next year he needs to look like Jordy Nelson if he wants to collect that money or he’ll be getting the old Green Bay discount.

  21. Not a packer fan, but I wish the best for Nelson. He was a great player. But with his type of injury, fans shouldn’t expect him to regain his former status as a long threat WR. He’ll probably end up doing fine as a possession or end zone threat, but his days of running past dbacks and hauling in long balls are probably over.

    —————————————————————————–

It’s not that he dropped it. It’s that another player decided that he wanted to be the hero and went up in front of Jordy to recover the OK but he is the one who dropped it instead.

And Jordy has hands of stone? Since when? He is not only one of the best receivers the Packers have but in all of the NFL.

Your hatred of the Packers really blinds you to the reality of them.

  23. Packers “being smart”…

Isn’t that what they call an oxymoron?

  24. It will be hard for him to come back from ACL, his best years are behind him.

  25. Repeat: As A Vikings fan I don’t want to see him on the field again.
BUT as a Football fan, I hope he makes a complete recovery, he is a good kid.
Now tell me, why did you mod that out on me before?

The same can not be said of Rodgers.

  27. I am asking every fan Vikings AND Packers,
When it come to Stories like this don’t be posting childish remarks and insults about injured players,
especially when they are coming back from a MAJOR
injury like this. Jordy wasn’t even born when most of our rivalries started.
So do you think we can show a little restraint here, possibly a hint of Sportsmanship?
AND on Vikings stories like it.
We have a good guy in Sullivan coming back from several Back Surgeries that would have been career ending a few short years ago, he needs some encouragement from all of us..
    OK????

As if you know Rodgers well enough to determine that?

Or do you just judge people by articles like how “he doesn’t sign autographs for certain people” or the way he “responding to fans foolishness”

  29. I hope they make it worth it and get Jordy that SB ring.
But I’m not going to hold my breath or much hope for my beloved Packers as long as we still have McMuffin for our head coach and play caller.

Says a guy whose team has Norv Turner calling offensive plays…
The guy went pass happy against the 31st run defense in early 2014, the guy kept having Deadpool Hands dropping back 7 steps and attempting to throw deep in spite of his crap oline and awful deep passes.

Norv is routinely out coached by DOM CAPERS… CAPERS?!
I almost feel bad for baby hands.

    ——————————-
The head coach that was calling plays that got a 6 TD performance out of Matt Flynn…
The guy gave up calling plays and the offense bombed.
But yeah “WORZT COAKH EVRZ!” – smh.

  32. You know you have no hope to the upcoming season when an old, slow white WR is your only glimmer of having a chance not to finish last in the NFC north.

  33. If your gonna comment, at least use facts. Jordy wasn’t the only injury at WR for the pack last year. Cobb started the season injured with an MCL, Montgomery only played in 6 games. Adams missed 5 games. Janis didn’t play much till the playoffs and Abbrederis started the season on the PS. James Jones is the only guy who didn’t miss time but did play with injured ribs late in the year.

I know Viking fans are slow but you should still be able to see and maybe even read.

  34. Jordy brings more of that Super Bowl pedigree back to an already LOADED roster. No wonder every national NFL expert has our beloved Green Bay Packers as one of the early handful of favorites for yet another world championship.

    Its simply better football.

    For better people.

Just think…he could’ve been dumb as a rock, like Everson Griffen, being drawn off-sides by a Rodgers hard count three times in one game.

    Lucky, I guess.

Depends who you listen to. NFL.com just rated the Vikes as having the 5th strongest roster in football while the Cheesers didn’t crack the top ten. Bottom line: Time will tell. Don’t you agree?

  37. With a top 5 roster, Vikings fans, anything less than an NFCC game appearance is an abject failure.

Oh, and good luck with that. Teeheehee.

What planet did you just arrive from? On Ap[ril 15th, 2016, NFL.com listed their “Power Teams of the NFC.”
    Seattle, Carolina, Arizona…….and Green Bay.

Listed as “contenders,” was; Eagles, Rams,…..and Vikings.

You have some ‘splainin to do.

  41. Stellar: If you’re playing against a 32nd ranked schedule, you’re going to win more games than you SHOULD all things being equal, thus it makes you a contender whether it’s earned or not. Also, the Packers are VERY TOP HEAVY in talent with Rodgers, while the Vikings have DEPTH…hence the reason the Vikings have a top 5 ROSTER and the Packers didn’t break top 10 with their ROSTER.

Proves the point many of us have been saying for a few years, without RODGERS the Packers are a mediocre team at best and he’s only got a few years left so enjoy being relative while you can.

    Since 1970 merger:
Vikes have a winning season 62% of the time,
    Packers winning just 50%.
    Just sayin….

Okay, I’ll explain. The ranking was done by former scout Bucky Brooks who also said the Vikings could be the 2016 Panthers. He was talking about roster strength not QB play which of course your team would win because you have a HOF QB, something at least 25 other teams don’t have. But when looking at the a Packers as a whole, you are Rodgers +an overweight RB + aged WR coming back from a serious injury+ two defensive players who can no longer get their HGH, and 48 scrubs. That’s not a championship roster. I mean Drew Brees and Philip Rivers are also potential HOF QBs but look at their supporting casts. You understand what me and Bucky mean?
