Drew Brees applies deadline to talks with Saints on a new deal

AP

The Saints and quarterback Drew Brees still haven’t worked out a new deal that reduces his salary-cap number for 2016 below $30 million. There’s now an apparent deadline for getting a deal done.

I don’t like to talk about contracts during the season,” Brees said Wednesday, via the Associated Press. “If you remember in 2011, where it began to drag into the season, three weeks in I was like, ‘I don’t want to deal with it anymore. I want to focus on football, focus on the season.’ That has always been my approach. That’ll be my approach again. There’s a deal to be done now, and if it doesn’t get done now, it’ll be a different deal to get done at the end of the year.”

That’s the closest Brees or his agent have come to pointing out the reality that, if the Saints allow Brees to play out the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract, the circumstances will change, dramatically. They’ll change thanks to the arbitration claim filed by Brees after the Saints applied the franchise tag to him in 2012, which resulted in a ruling that the next application of the tag to Brees will be the third of his career. As a result, he’ll be entitled to a 44-percent increase over his cap number from 2016.

That’s $43.2 million. For one year. For a quarterback who will be 38 in January.

This means that the Saints likely wouldn’t apply the tag to Brees, allowing instead for the market to set his value. Which creates the very real possibility that someone else will offer Brees dramatically more than the Saints will offer. Which, in turn, sets the stage for the possibility of Brees changing teams after what will be his 11th season in New Orleans.

While Brees leaving remains a long shot, teams use the franchise tag to keep key players off the market. When a player has a chance to go to the market (e.g., Ndamukong Suh), anything can happen. And with plenty of teams always searching for franchise quarterbacks, someone out there surely would love to have a Favre-in-Minnesota year or two with Brees.

  1. Brees simply isn’t worth huge money any more. His arm strength is waning and his physical skills aren’t what they used to be. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

  2. He will make less next year than he will this year.
And he will demand an explaination.

Hahaha at all these comments… With Brady getting old and Manning out the league, Brees is easily the BEST QB in the league and deserves top QB pay. He would certainly get a lot more than 16M on the market LOL. Look at his awesome stats from last year. #2 offense and led the league in passing yards in only 15 starts:
    428 for 4870 yds 32 TDs and 11 INTs

  4. Let him walk after the season and take the compensatory pick. At age 38 at the start of the 2017 season (he’ll be age 39 at the end) he is old and could decline rapidly.
    I’d pay 22MM for a 1 year deal, or 40MM for a 2 year deal.
Too much risk for anything longer.

If I was Brees and wanted another SB ring, take less money and go to a QB needy team like Denver for 1 year.
Or if he really wants to get max $$$ for 1-2 years, pick a QB needy team that will pay him.

  5. For 1 year, I think he’ll get more than 16MM.
If he has a good 2016 season, I’d pay him 20MM for 1 year if I was a win now team.

At 38 he will get 16 M tops from anyone. Elway is setting the market. His best bet is to resign and he knows it.

  6. This is a joke. He’s finished as a qb that can win games but Saints cave in because they fear public backlash. Fans consider him a hero. They’re too stupid to realize his selfishness and greed are preventing Saints from being able to afford good free agents. It’ll be another 7-9 season watching ‘nice guy Drew’ lose playing 7 on 7.

  7. It’s amazing to me how no one ever talks about how greedy this man is.

He is a Franchise QB, no doubt, but when it comes to being a team player and leaving meat on the bone for other guys, he doesn’t want any part of it.

  8. I am sticking with my opinion that the Saints have a plan A and B. Plan A, playoffs and Drew gets a new contract while plan B doesn’t favor Drew. I am very thankful for everything Drew has contributed to the Saints organization but it’s a business at the end of the day. Saints fans are always loyal, win or lose. Drew has made it more fun to be a Who Dat! Geaux get ’em Saints!!

  9. I’ve never understood how a pro athlete who has to deal with all the ‘distractions’ around them can call something like this a ‘distraction.’ Drew, this is what your agent is for and I’m pretty sure whatever is worked out isn’t going to affect whether you can put food on your table or not. You’re the only one creating a distraction by not helping the team and cutting that awful cap number in half.

Bingo. Me too. I have visions of Brees cowering in the corner of a training room, sweating, nervously wringing his hands because he’s not sure if a mega-contract will be coming his way. Gimme a break. The guy is super wealthy and his biggest care is probably whether he should buy the island in the Carribean or that beach property in Maui.

He’s probably not worth what he’s getting now, the Saints should bring in a new guy and rebuild their defense which sucks huge.

  11. Anyone who posts comments about Brees’s waning arm strength or diminished skills is either football ignorant and never watches the Saints play or trolling. Brees remains a top 5 qb in the league and all the Saints need is to have a D that is somewhere in the middle of the pack and the Saints are right back in the hunt. And I’m sure all you “unselfish” critics routinely refuse bonuses and raises from your employers out of a sense of loyalty to them. Hypocrites.

  12. Really? A “Favre-in-Minnesota” reference on a SAINTS article? That seemed like a good idea to you did it? Are the Saints also going to put a bounty on Brees if he doesn’t take their deal?

    POS organization.

  13. Drew has been very patient with the Saints front office. Rarely does he parade his demands in front of the media and he never does anything to embarrass his team or organization. Over the hill? Not yet.

  14. With a salary cap, there is only so much you can spend on a QB unless he’s a dominant one. Brees is a great guy, a great leader, and a super bowl winner. He has value to the city beyond what he does on the field. I’m sure the fans love him. This is a tough business. I remember when the 49ers went with Steve Young over an aging, but still superior Joe Montana. Brees can still play at a high level, but there are several QBs who can outplay him. Those QBs are usually the ones who make it deep into the playoffs. If it’s just a football decision, I’d look for a young QB. But if you don’t have confidence in your ability to evaluate young QBs, you gotta pay Brees. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence. There were some great QBs in this year’s draft and the Saints passed on them. My money says they’ll get a deal done with Brees soon.

  15. If the Brees thing doesn’t work out, Philly will gladly offer Sensitive Sam Bradford. He’s a quality starting QB, just entering his prime…
yes, I am laughing while I type this message!

  16. If this this doesn’t work out with Brees, Philly will gladly trade Sensitive Sam Bradford to Who Dat Nation!

  17. Saints will be around 60 million under the cap next year before Brees deal is done. So not a bad idea to just let the 30 million cap hit happen this year (there are no great free agents left to try to sign anyways) and sign breed to extension that is cap friendly next year and so they can go after big pieces in free agency next year with all that space.

it’s all about ’17, ’18 and ’19, when Saints should be contenders again for Brees to have his last big run. All the cap space dead money problems gone after this season.

In the meantime look for Brees to put up another 5,000 yard season this year and lead league in passing again, for a team that is better, maybe 9-7.

  18. Really? A “Favre-in-Minnesota” reference on a SAINTS article? That seemed like a good idea to you did it? Are the Saints also going to put a bounty on Brees if he doesn’t take their deal?

    POS organization.

    Only 15 starts?? Wow that’s absolutely amazing…
You must have him on your fantasy team. Awesome stats man..from a losing team with no run game and playing from behind most of the time.

Drew Brees, Carson Palmer and Tony Romo are done. Why are teams paying them elite QB dollars to get injured in 2016?
    *************************************
Injuries are hard to predict. Young, strong QBs like Andrew Luck and Ben Roethlisberger can get hurt too. Old, frail guys like Peyton Manning can still win super bowls. If Drew Brees went to a team like Buffalo, Minnesota, or the Jets, teams with nasty defenses, they’d be hard to beat.

Translation: Saints/Brees beat my team many times in the past 10 years… WAHHHH

Brees has missed one game in 10 seasons with Saints. Had he not missed the one game last year, he would have been over 5000 yards again. He is year after year hitting numbers than only a few other QBs have hit one time in their careers. And his TD to interception ratio and % completion rate remained stellar last year too. Still easily a top 5 QB. Still quite durable.

Sorry but I don’t think Brees with any of those teams playing for those coaches would be anywhere near as successful. Brees is in large part a product of his working relationship with Sean Payton and that offense being built around his play style.

He’d still be good but you can’t plug him in and in just a season or two expect the INSANE production that you see New Orleans offense.

  24. As of now there is a lot of QB potential for next years draft. I would say he was worth his 5yr/$100mil . And the Saints will move on next year unless Drew takes a big cut, because they are drafting a QB no matter what happens.

  25. So much money sunk into one guy on a team with nonexistent running and an all-time terrible defense. Drew can only be expected to do so much in an organization so terribly run.

  26. He looked like hot garbage when Sean Payton was suspended for a year. They only won a SB because of Bountygate. The Taints should move on.

  27. I’m just tired of this guy. 2 years ago, he had more sniffing commercials than Peyton. So it say he “needs” the money is ludicrous.

According to Spotrac, Brees has earned $150 million. Will his life, or anyone in his life lsignificantly better if he sign a new 3 year $75 million contract. I think Brees is delirious.

  28. Drew Brees got the ring and a Lombardi for N.O. and that’s wonderful. The flip side is that he and the team have set the franchise back years with the contract they signed.

A $30 million dollar cap hit is crippling.

  29. His day has come and gone. Great QB but he and his agent crushed this team…. Although he laughs all the way to the bank…totally not the representative he claims to be. Saints need a team, not a one man band.. This most likely shows the insecurity ten coach has in coaching up a team versus hoping for the best with what used to be…
