Lions waive Tim Wright

The Buccaneers traded tight end Tim Wright to the Patriots just before the start of the 2014 season, claimed him off of waivers from the Patriots last June and then traded him to the Lions for kicker Kyle Brindza in August.

Now they have another chance to bring him back to the roster. Wright was waived with an injury designation by the Lions on Thursday.

Wright re-signed with the Lions earlier this offseason after deciding not to tender him as a restricted free agent. He had nine catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns in nine appearances, which marked a drop from the 80 catches for 907 yards and 11 touchdowns that he had while playing every game for the Bucs and Patriots in his first two seasons.

That earlier production could lead a team to give Wright a look heading into the season. If not, he’ll revert to Detroit’s injured reserve or reach an injury settlement with the team that makes him a free agent.

  1. Boy, I sure am glad we gave up Mankins for this guy… (I know Mankins is retired now, and wasn’t what he once was last few years) but he was still much better than most of what we had in the interior OL.

Oh well, hopefully the kids make a big second year leap and the OTs are healthy.

  2. Remember when everyone crowned Belicheat the next Tom Landry for trading Mankins to the Bucs for this guy? Yet had they held on to Logan maybe they’d have had a chance vs Denver in last yrs AFC championship game……

No, we done’t, because we weren’t. Landry was not a personnel guy btw Tex Schramm was the GM of the ‘Boys teams he coached. If you’re going to reference one of the GOATs you should get it right. Mankins was immensely popular in NE, almost every Pats fan was shaking their heads but because of his track record we were forced to say ‘in Bill we trust’ albeit grudgingly…

In the end we were wrong to question it. The Patriots real objective was the $13 million in salary-cap space they needed and got by trading Mankins and they won the SB after the trade. Wright wasn’t exactly a no show in NE and they received a 4th round pick as well.

  4. Bengals just lost Eifert for the beginning of their season. Wright is probably worth a look for them.

  5. This was the guy that Belichick wanted when he unceremoniously sent Mankins packing… After he played all season with an MCL injury … Including the playoffs too.

  6. Bring him back to Tampa. I can’t figure out why this guy doesn’t stick with any teams. He’s a decent pass catching TE

  7. Schramm was the GM, Brandt was his player personnel guy. The Pats fan was right. God knows they beat my Giants enough for me to remember them
