Mario Williams happy to “cut it loose” in Miami

Defensive end Mario Williams’ 2015 season with the Bills was marked by his complaints about what the team was asking him to do on defense and complaints from others that Williams wasn’t giving the team everything he had.

That unhappy mix and Williams’ big cap number led the Bills to part ways with Williams once the season came to an end. Williams landed with the Dolphins as a free agent and he’s singing a different tune when it comes to fitting into a defense than he was last season.

“At the end of the day, whatever scheme that defensive coordinators have or whatnot, you have to take it and adjust to it and run with it,” Williams said, via ESPN.com. “It could be anything. It varies not just [for] myself, but my teammates. They’ve been other places and experienced other things.”

The reason behind Williams’ change of heart isn’t difficult to figure out. The Dolphins want Williams to rush the passer first and foremost, which eliminates his biggest bone of contention from last year.

“I think the biggest focal point and exciting for us is knowing that [we can] cut it loose,” Williams said. “It’s almost like saying, ‘Go! Every time, just go. We’re going to put you in the best position for you to get after it and everything else is going to trickle downhill from there.'”

It’s not the first time we’ve heard this kind of positivity from Williams about his role since he joined the Dolphins. That probably won’t make for many smiles in Buffalo, but it could be the foundation for a rebound from Williams in Miami.

  1. Mario Williams is the opposite of Marshawn Lynch.

All talk and no action, boss.

  2. Let’s see if you have anything left to offer bro. I hope so, maybe it was just a case of Rex being a usual moron.

We all agree a Brady is guilty though, right?

  3. We’ll see what happens on the field, especially towards the end of the season.

    “The proof of the pudding….”

  4. Amazing what an attitude adjustment can do for a player. The Fins now have 3 former pro bowlers on the D line. If everyone plays to their potential (coach Joseph seems pretty good at getting their attention), could be a competitive unit.

  5. Rex took one of the best pass rushers in the game and repeatedly used him as a decoy and dropped him into pass coverage so that his ” clever” zone blitz scheme could be torched by QBs like Blake Bortles and Kirk Cousins. Best of luck to Mario. God Save the Bills.

  6. He’s a bum. Period. Forget about scheme. Anytime he is matched up with someone he can’t physically intimidate in the first half of the first quarter he shrivels and fades away.

His stats are racked up against inferior competition.

    Mentally weak

  7. Sounds a lot like what he said before last season. Hard to build around a guy who packs it in when things dont go his way.

  8. Mario Williams happy to “cut it loose”

Cut what loose? His dance moves in the club? He certainly hasn’t cut anything loose on the field.

Just walk the walk bro. No talk necessary.

  9. He was literally asked to drop into coverage less than 2 times a game. He was a baby that didn’t want to buy in. Just wait until a little adversity hits and he will mail it in. I guarantee he will light up the Bills though because it was their fault ( and not lack of effort) that he sucked last year.

Good then knock cheater Brady all over the turf in BOTH games!!! Time to GET IT DONE!!!

Too bad dolphins wont even make the playoffs. The pats own the division, maybe if your overrated overpaid QB got bullied and cried he might perform

Can certainly agree that most Dolphin fans want to see him suspended, guilt or innocence be damned

Seems like too much money and attention being spent on the wrong side of the ball. 27th in offense, 30th in TOP

  13. When you have to double team Suh and put your best O-lineman on Wake every play that leaves Williams free to cause all kinds of havoc. I am excited to see these guys take the field this year.

  14. “Can certainly agree that most Dolphin fans want to see him suspended, guilt or innocence be damned”

I certainly can’t speak for all Dolphin fans but I myself do not want Brady suspended. Seems to me that this should be a very competitive year in the AFC-E. Jets, Bills, and Miami all seem to have done quite well in the draft and the Bills defense should be fierce with the addition of Lawson and Ragland. Miami added some interesting players to their offense as well as the best O-lineman in the draft combined with Gase who should bring an interesting twist to the offense it should be much improved.

No, I don’t want Tom Brady suspended because should the Pats lose their hold on the AFC-E, I don’t want you fans to have any excuses. Like it or not Tom Brady is getting older and your run with him is just about over. We saw it when Dan retired, you’ll see it as well.

  15. Bills fans are in denial about what Rex did to “improve” Marrone’s defense. Mario had 3 straight double digit sack seasons and then the foot-freak happened

  16. The guy is a 4-3 DE, but everyone wanted to turn him into a 3-4 OLB because he can run. He may be fast in strait line pursuit, but he never had the agility to excel at that spot. I cant imagine he doesent get double digit sacks for the next few years playing the correct position.

    Mario Williams Bwahahahahhahhah

I realize that B-lo fans are upset with him signing with the Dolphins, but crying isn’t going to help.

  18. an aging, overpaid and overrated 4-3 player is still trying to explain why he shouldn’t have ever been the #1 overall pick in the draft, over a decade later.

    Yikes.

This is why a player like this would never play in NE.

He equates only sacks to quality production as a DE/OLB.

    LMAO

They’re building around Suh, not Williams.

  20. a decoy and dropped him into pass coverage so that his ” clever” zone blitz scheme could be torched by QBs like Blake Bortles and Kirk Cousins. Best of luck to Mario. God Save the Bills.

    24 4

Oh imagine if you knew what you were talking about. He dropped back a whopping 28 times all season. He was pissed because jerry Hughes was equally as good at getting to the qb and could also play the pass

  21. Did Suh end up making $1,000,000 per tackle last year?

    Mario is a whiny loser.

Wake is the only one that is worth a turd, not just on the defense, but on the whole team, (Matt Moore excluded).

Does your annual chatter about how great the Dolphins are going to be,”this year”, ever start to feel familiar to you Dolphins fans? I know that hearing it every year is getting pretty comical!

  22. Too bad dolphins wont even make the playoffs. The pats own the division, maybe if your overrated overpaid QB got bullied and cried he might perform

Too bad the Patriots didn’t get homefield advantage because they lost to two division foes and one of them was the Phins!

  23. You wouldn’t understand the feelings us Bills fans had when we inked him to that long term deal… the city had a different outlook towards the upcoming season… we felt that this one guy was going to make a huge difference, that this was a step in the right direction. It was. Mario Williams dominated… and even though you could tell he took a play off every now and then, nobody would question him… why? Because he was Mario Williams. Well one play turned into two, which turned into 6 and eventually he started to get called out. So what does he do, he looks for the easiest way out and complains about Rex Ryan’s system, which has never been done before… all of Rex’s players have played into his scheme and never questioned it. So was it Ryan’s system or is Mario Williams just reaching for an excuse? I guess the Dolphin fans will find out this season.

  24. These delusional Pats fans seem to forget the Dolphins smacked around Brady and the Pats in the last game of the season. Brady couldn’t throw and their run game was non existent. Then again, Pats homers will deny this game just like all of the cheating done by this dishonest organization

  25. Quarterbacks just had to step up in the pockets and Mario was 10 yards out of the play and never hustled back. He knew he was going to be a cap casualty and mailed it in and used the 2 times a game he had to drop back as an excuse. Good riddance!

  26. I wish someone would just be honest in their assessment of MW. I have watched him play every game for the last four seasons.

He is a very good player. Great at containing the edge due to his long body and arms. I will say he disappoints during big games, against good schemes or very good tackles. I think that could be partially due to the amount of money he was earning. You would look for him to make big plays and it just never happened against good teams. He will make amazing plays throughout the year but typically against teams that have weak offensive lines and rack up stats against these teams. He didn’t show up once to a game against the Jets or Patriots in his fours years. That being said I cant remember a game I watched thinking, Mario didn’t play well. He always plays well , just not up to the level of what you would think a first overall player would play or to the amount of money he was being paid. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed having him on the team.

  27. Asking Mario Williams to drop into coverage is like asking Manute Bol to step out and pop some 3’s, just ain’t gonna happen.

  28. The Bills aren’t worried about Mario. They practiced against him every day and know all his moves. Besides, how can he “cut it loose” when the Bills pass 27 times a game and run it about 50? He will have to stop the run first, and Ritchie will take care of Suh in short order, not to mention get some payback for the team throwing him under the bus with Martin, as the team was the one who assigned him to”toughen Martin up” then blamed it all on him, destroying his career until the Bills revived it.

  29. He had 15 solo tackles all last season, yet it’s the Bills fault for his performance. He could of laid down and tripped more people for better stats than that. He also earned about $3.5 Million per sack, so I think he’s living in bizzaro world.

Every Bills fan knew it was his last year, he packed it in early for the Texans and left as well. I trust patterns, Mario quits on every team he plays on. Plan on seeing him pull a Bruce Smith Hammy type injury during the hottest time of the year in Miami, he will only show up for his checks.
