Ryan Tannehill: A lot of freedom in Adam Gase’s offense

Dolphins defensive end Mario Williams said this week that he’s enjoying what he’s seen from the team’s defensive scheme after a dismal year with the Bills in 2015.

Williams isn’t the only member of the team excited about life under a new coaching staff. Unlike Williams, quarterback Ryan Tannehill didn’t have to switch teams to find something more to his liking.

Tannehill said that the offense being installed by coach Adam Gase allows for the quarterback to have more control over adjustments before the play, something that wasn’t the case under the previous regime and something that Tannehill’s teammates said hurt the quarterback at times.

“We do a lot of things differently now,” Tannehill said. “Being on the line of scrimmage adjusting, whether it’s protections, routes, a whole new play — there’s a lot of freedom in what we do. I think it’s going to make us always on the attack. We’re not going to have to sit on our heels and feel like the defense is coming after us and we have to figure out a way to make it work. We can put pressure on the defense by getting in a good play and always keeping the heat on the defense.”

The first year in a new offense can make for some growing pains, but the change in coaches won’t do anything to lower expectations that Tannehill show he can take the next step in his development during the 2016 season.

  1. The good news is the QB will have more freedom in the new offense. The bad news is that QB is still Ryan Tannehill. Much like the good news is there have been renovations at their stadium but the bad news is it’s still in So. Florida

  2. Tannehill has gone through 3 HCs, 3 OCs, 25 OL, and 12 WRs. Tannehill is not the problem here, it’s the OL despite 2 pro bowlers and 3 1st rd picks on the OL last season. Dolfans are useful idiots

  3. Can you imagine telling Brady or Manning that they can’t change a play at the line of scrimmage. Well that’s what the previous coaching staffs did with Tannehill. I hope he breaks out an “Omaha”.

  4. The reason he never had that freedom is because he doesn’t process information quick enough. Sadly for him, it means he’ll have no excuses this year. Gase will get his franchise QB via the draft next year

  5. Wow…..Tannehill and the Dolphins are going to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage now…… How innovative….

  6. I think this is exactly what Tannehill and the offense needed. Lazor had some decent plays but he had to guess right EVERY time he called a play since he did not allow changes at the line. That meant that if the defense was set to destroy that play, every offensive player knew it and could do nothing about it but line up and go through the motions. Now, the QB can exploit matchup problems for the defense by simply adjusting the protections or calling a different play. It is easy to say they didn’t allow Tannehill to audible because he couldn’t handle it but that is bogus. They never did it during practice either which is where they would have formulated that kind of opinion. It is far more likely that Lazor and Philbin micromanaged everything because they were enamored by their own schemes or they needed personal involvement in absolutely everything. Dolphins fans who paid attention know that the prior coaching staff rarely adjusted. Philbin had everybody on a specified play count and would take them out when his chart said to instead of using guys that were hot or replacing guys that were getting beat down. If this coaching staff has the ability to look at what is going on and adjust accordingly, the Dolphins will be a much better team. The talent is good enough, the coaches making the decisions were the problem (along with the poor line)

One was trying to come back from injury, one was injured, and the other missed time as well, with the worse guards in the NFL. Bottom line, this is his last chance. He’s had Philbin and a TE coach, two moron OC’s, linemen that sucked or were injured, and receivers with issues. That said, the only useful idiot is you.

  8. And if Ryan is not successful this year, what will it be, that Gase’s offense was not regimented enough. I think Ryan has gone through a lot of coaches and coordinators. Gase will not be one of them when decision time comes and Ryan continues to disappoint.

  9. i always find it interesting how amazing the Dolphins are going to be during the upcoming season as we learn thse wonderful tidbits

    Coming out of OTA’s!

Fins fans have got to be the most gullible people, no wonder they believe godell

  10. Please, give the kid a chance, everyone knows the o line was in shambles, and remember he was a receiver most of his college career and has constant change in his young Nfl career.
And that’s all I have to say about that!

  11. Every year at this time things are looking up for the dolphins, and every year tannehill fails to live up to the hype. Now they have a bunch of underachievers on defense too so all three phases of their game can suck. I’ll give gase two years, bravo miami

  12. It’s always something else, it’s always someone else’s problem. It’s never Tannehill, complain the writers. It’s always the coaches, the linemen defending him, the lack of receivers, blah blah blah. Like you all know so much. Tannehill will bungle his time with Gase too, and then it’ll be some other new thing.

Plug Rodgers into the Dolphins, they’d win games. Plug Brady into the Dolphins, they’d win games. Tannehill can’t win it on his own, and it’s abundantly clear at this point. Tannehill isn’t great. And that’s okay. Trent Dilfer won the Super Bowl because the rest of the team did it for him. Manning won the Super Bowl because he had a fantastic defense on his side and didn’t screw it up.

It’s okay to not have an elite QB, so don’t pretend that Tannehill is some elite QB that would work out if only someone would give him a chance!

  13. I have solid hope this year with Gase. I’ve always wondered why we never make real time game adjustments. We were terrible under Philbin & Sparano with adjustments. I’m 44 and lifelong fins fan. This is my first year as a season ticket holder. Crossing my fingers, I just want to see us compete late in the season and not collapse.

  14. Tannehill has been a 4000+ yard thrower with high completion percentage and a solid TD-INT ratio, comparable or better than a ton of other “top QBs”.

No one thinks hes a HoFer. **BUT***He is statistically on par with a ton of other “franchise” Qbs, including

Ryan, Flacco, Dalton, Luck, Wilson, Carr, Bortles, Winston, Stafford Mariota, Romo, Cousins, Osweiler, Manning, Rivers….

Tannehill has elite speed, one of stronger arms that is not given credit for (no body throws the far side like he does, but his deep accuracy is not average at best). he has the record for completions in a row, hes one of the most sacked QBs but rarely complains or gets rattled and gets up after nasty hits. Tough as nails. pre-med student who is praised for intellect as well.

Nothing not to like about Ryan Tannehill, and if Joe Flacco and Dunce Manning can win super bowls than so he can. If russel wilson can win a super bowl or lose a super bowl barely breaking 3000 yards passing so can he.

He’ll outlast Rex, that I’m sure of. Any coach who can take a to 5 defense and trash it, is destined for the dumpster.

  16. No excuses anymore. Tanny needs to put up. Has a good line, decent receivers, and a good coach. Still no RB’s yet but he should win games now.

Flacco, Manning and Wilson have all shown the ability to come up big in some damn big moments. Tannehill has yet to show an ability to do anything other than fold like yesterday’s newspaper. That “dunce” is undefeated vs Miami and out dueled one of the GOATs en route to winning two defensive throw down SB’s. A fish fan should say his name with awe not derision.

  18. Tannehill seems like a nice guy and does seem to have some talent. Too bad it is wasted in Miami. Put Tannehill on the Bengals and they might even win a playoff game.

  19. What ever this year is for him what his 1st four years I think I wonder what his stats compare to Brady’s 1st four years.

  20. Just like I thought …Tannehill has the better stats and that’s not even including Brady’s 1st year were he wasn’t on the field much. More yards, higher qb rating, and so on. Most recent with all his so-called lack of whatever he’s beaten Brady head to head the last 2 out of three times.

He has had some clutch drives in the final 2 minutes before the half and some decent drives late in games. I’ll give you that he can do better but how many games has he had the lead with 5 minutes left only to watch the coach call 3 running plays that look to be designed to spot the ball in the middle rather than gain any yardage and then the defense collapses? Too many. He could be better on 3rd downs and late in games. I will wait to see how the new staff handles those situations. If they try but he fails then I can see blasting him. Until then, I will support the kid because he works his butt off to get better.

Tannehill has a passer rating of 84
Wilson has a passer rating of 101

    Tannehill completes at 61%
    Wilson completes at 65%

    Tannehill has 87 TD’s to 54 INT’s
    Wilson has 106 TD’s to 34 INT’s

I won’t even put in things like rushing statistics, game winning drives, playoffs or Lombardi’s.

Exactly HOW are they statistically identical? And please don’t be that dunce that tries to put up Tannehill’s total yards as evidence. When you suck and throw repeatedly because you’re behind in games you put up a few more TOTAL yards.

  23. Wasn’t Rex and that terrible defense 2-0 against the great tannehill last year, at least the dolphins might be able to upgrade the quarterback position next year when they are picking first in the draft

  24. The last thing Checkdown Ryan needs is freedom. He should be cut if he throws another pass two yards downfield on third and ten.

  25. Simply stated, everything in place for tannehill to go to the next level. If he doesn’t, they will be drafting a qb next year. No more excuses.

  26. FinFan68 had the best post this time, more facts and great opinions about Miami prospects. Bill

  27. VenerableAxiom Gary Kubiak says hello, you know the guy that came in and handcuffed Manning and helped cripple the Broncos offense. Yeah Manning was banged up some, but his injuries weren’t his biggest issue this past year. It started with Kubiak.

  28. I dont know much about Tanny. Miami games are rarely shown on the west coast. If he is any good, Gase will be perfect for him. BTW, in a perfect world, Gase should be the HC of the Broncos.
