Aaron Rodgers blames being mic’d up for Randall Cobb’s punctured lung

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn’t exactly been a fan of technology creeping onto the field. He doesn’t enjoy having cameramen on the field and microphones picking up everything said at the line of scrimmage.

But Rodgers believes the equipment was detrimental in another way as well. He believes it’s responsible for Randall Cobb suffering a punctured lung in the Packers’ playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals in January.

Rodgers joined his former Packer teammate and current free agent linebacker A.J. Hawk for a nearly two-hour conversation on Hawk’s “The Hawk Cast” podcast and expressed his disdain for the technology creep into the field of play. During the conversation, Rodgers said he believes Cobb’s injury was due to him being mic’d up for the game.

“Randall Cobb had a serious injury last year in a playoff game and I believe, as I think he would as well and the team, that that was caused from him being mic’d up,” Rodgers said. “Because he fell on his mic pack and he had an injury to his insides that kept him out of the game and probably would have kept him out of the rest of the playoffs. The puncture spot, or the injury spot, was directly adjacent to his mic pack.”

Cobb landed hard on his back while attempting to make a one-handed catch late in the first quarter of Green Bay’s playoff loss to the Cardinals. He began coughing up blood on the sidelines and had trouble breathing. He was released from the hospital after an overnight stay and is doing well now.

Whether the mic pack played a part in Cobb’s injury or not, Rodgers still isn’t fond of the technology encroaching on the game.

“Yeah, I think it’s too much information,” Rodgers said. “In 2008 there used to be no headset on defense, so the defense had to signal in every play and that was part of the whole Spygate issue and filming signals and what not. But now you have mics on both guards most of the time and you pick up everything that the quarterback says when we’re at home, and sometimes on the road as well, and I think that’s a competitive edge for the defense and it makes you have to work that much harder with your dummy words and your live and dead words. I mean, that’s part of the game there, but I think that the access is a little bit much.

“I think being mic’d up, when I’m mic’d up, it takes away from the authenticity of the game for me. I don’t feel comfortable mic’d up.”

Hawk then turned the conversation to idea of having point-of-view cameras in quarterbacks’ helmets at some point in the near future.

“Won’t be my helmet I’ll tell you that much,” Rodgers said.

“How are you going to stop them?” Hawk asked.

“I don’t get mic’d up. I’m not going to wear that,” Rodgers replied.

“What if they put them on every guy?” Hawk asked.

“Might have to call it a career,” Rodgers said with a laugh.

  1. Rodgers is good dude. Everybody likes him. But this is too much. Excuses are for losers. NFL players love the spotlight and the money. You cant have it both ways.

  2. He also blamed his last playoff loss on a coin flip, so take it for what it’s worth.

  3. man rodgers is such a baby. defense never had a mic so they had to signal in. well offense never did either. but that shows you why he was lucky to win 1 sp and thats all he will ever accomplish. i see the lions winning before he does.they dominated in both games last year.

  4. Of course, it had nothing to do with the poor pass that he had to lay out for, right Rodgers?

  5. He sure is whiny isn’t he? Unfair advantage to the defense? Come on, the whole rule book has been rewritten to give the offense an advantage.

  6. Randall Cobb speculated that the mic pack punctured his lung in the days after the game as well, before anyone thinks this a new theory that Rodgers is promoting.

  7. “Yeah, I think it’s too much information,” Rodgers said. “In 2008 there used to be no headset on defense, so the defense had to signal in every play and that was part of the whole Spygate issue and filming signals and what not.

lol Rodgers doesn’t realize filming signals has always been legal and currently still is. There was no Spygate issue.

  8. Although a fantastic player, this guy whines and complains more than anyone I have ever seen. Its a bit nauseating at times. We get it, you got drafted a little later than expected and are still upset about it……time to move on and win another championship instead of choking and complaining again this season.

  9. “Might have to call it a career,” Rodgers said.

Rodger’s inaccurate passing injured two WR’s for the Packers last season.

If the throws to Jordy and Randall had been on target, neither one would have been injured attempting to catch Rodger’s wayward passes.

The Packers better hope the NFL requires helmet cams soon (and Rodger’s makes good on his claim to call it a career (he is known for welching)) – or the entire receiving crew will be on the IR….

  10. Before all the Viking trolls invade this article with their jealous comments (the irony being, the Vikings had not one but two chances to draft Rodgers but elected to draft a WR with stone hands @ #7 overall and an injury prone DE and both were out of the league within 2 years), Rodgers is factually correct but you wouldn’t hear the league talking about it because it runs counter to their big PR ploy of player safety.

  11. “In 2008 there used to be no headset on defense, so the defense had to signal in every play”

nobody wines more than this guy… in 2008 I had a competitive advantage over the defense and now technology has evened the playing feild for offense and defense and Its not fair…. wah

  12. One of the things I like best about the Packers is that they always manage to finish ahead of their division opponents.

That keeps football fun for its awesome fan base.

  13. Another reason to stop this mic’d up stuff. It really isn’t interesting for the fans anyway. They seem to act different because they are mic’d up. Very unnatural, and what they mostly just have a lot of yelling whaooo, yeah baby or other things I don’t need to hear.

  14. Good lord, will you shut up already? You blame anything, everything when you don’t/can’t win games and choke away Super Bowl chances UFO guy.

  15. UFO guy complaining again? He needs to be tested for hgh bc he’s been complaining lately. First, a fan now about being mic’up. Who knows what’s could be next., perhaps like Sharper. Lol

  16. UFO guy complaining again? He needs to be tested for hgh bc he’s been complaining lately. First, a fan now about being mic’d up. Who knows what could be next., perhaps like Sharper. Lol

  17. UFO guy complaining again? He needs to be tested for hgh bc he’s been complaining lately. First, a fan now about being mic’d up. Who knows what could be next, perhaps like Sharper. Lol

  18. I like his as a QB but man he makes our team looks like a bunch of bafoons when he talks. The PR guys need to protect him. Next he’s going to say Jordy wouldn’t have shredded his knee if Rodger’s hands weren’t so tiny.

  19. What a surprise. This guy keeps making himself harder and harder to like. After a mediocre year, where he’s not even ranked in the top 101 players, he appears to be saying anything he can to stay relevant. Pitiful.

  20. Yet another reason why the owner’s insistence to keep doing extra things that don’t have to do with the actual well being of the game is messing up the game.

  21. Oh Rogers. Come on man, you choked again fair and square. No excuses. You sure are a good player, and MY GUY. But it’s never too soon to start looking for the QB of the future. Look what the Vike’s are building over there – a complete team. Can’t rely on Rogers to do hail marries every game anymore. Hope my PACK prove me wrong this season, but I think it’s going to be a rough one. GO. PACK.

    >

  22. It wasn’t just Rodgers saying this, team doctors diagnosed this as being the reason for his punctured lung immediately after it had happened.

  23. “Might have to call it a career,” Rodgers said with a laugh.
    ———
With the way he played last year, if he continues with that trend, calling it a career may not be up to him.

  24. Of course he doesn’t like the technology on the field.

With more cameras in play, the less chance his O-Line will get away with holding on every freaking play.

  25. Competitive advantage for the defence? If it were that would be the only one the NFL has allowed for the defense. Every other advantage baked into the game favors the offense.

It is the best line for him to take if he wants to get rid of it though. The NFL works hard to make the game as easy for the offense as possible.

  26. Typical Erin, rules are only good if/when they benefit him. “I think that’s a competitive edge for the defense”, I wonder if that’s what the defense says when he pulls them offsides with movement and a hard count and gets a free play? You want some french cries with that waaburger. Diva..

  27. I think the issue of injury being caused (or enhanced) by any tech is legit, but all the stuff about competitive disadvantage(s) is nonsense, especially when you consider how much the rules have changed to benefit offenses over the years.

  28. He may “call it a career” if the NFL made him wear a head camera??
    LMFAO!!

Please….you’d have to drag that preening jerk from the spotlight with his finger nails scrapping the ground!!

His whole career is to prove to the World how great he is
He would never walk away for any reason as stupid as that!

  29. “Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn’t exactly been a fan of technology creeping onto the field.”

Of course not because the microphone will pick up him calling out his teammates every time he misses them on a pass which is silly because the camera is already picking up him giving them the stink eye so everybody already knows what is going on anyway.

  31. This is what I hate about this time of the year. A player can mentioned that he likes cookies and cream icecream the best and everyone will respond how the player is a tool.

There just needs to be a moratorium on interviews until training camp starts. We’re too desperate for stories and when we get stories, all we do is complain about what was said.

  32. Can only imagine what Zimmer would tell Rodgers if he were on the Vikings. Zimmer doesn’t allow crybabies on his team. We’re comin’….

  33. Hating this guy more and more each year. They were so bad last year but he just can’t admit it. I never had a problem with the Packers but they relied on suspicious ref calls and luck to survive last season.

  34. Aaron Rodgers made a comment when asked a question on the Hawk show. He did not complain about it causing the packers to lose, he just stated Randell Cobb got hurt while wearing this mic which is not really needed. He never once said it would change the outcome of that specific game. No need to troll the guy for making a point, in fact I bet it’s a common feeling across NFL players.

  35. Aaron Rogers may just be very confident but he sounds very arrogant whenever I listen to his interview.

I think he one of the best QB if not the top dog, I like him for throwing a little on the Patriots for Spygate. How do Patriot fans even deny that cheating happened? Marshall Faulk had a good story about the Super Bowl against the Pats that made you raise your eyebrows because a better team got robbed.

My God, I finally have a legitimate NFL quarterback! Can I get you some coffee, Mr Rodgers sir?

  38. He overthrew Cobb and he had to make a leaping one handed stab at catching the ball. stretched out like that he could not protect himself and was injured when he landed. I am not sure the battery box is the root cause. It looked like a bad throw.

  39. The real point here is that there are too many electronics on the field today. May as well start playing the game with robots. Very little of the audio captured when players are mic’d up is of much interest to fans anyway. Occasionally the audio from coaches might be interesting, but only after editing in with highlights after a game.

It was PFF.com that listed the Top 101 and excluded rodgers. Last year he was not a top player or quarterback by any stretch of the imagination. Marshall Faulk is a bigger baby than old baby hands Rogers. It is known fact he made stuff up to try and justify a 14 point underdog coming in and and beating “the greatest show on turf” and ending a run at a dynasty. Everything he has said has been proven false and then he just goes on about something else. Sour grapes even 15 years later. Makes me smile

The better team won that day. Sorry

  49. Gotta love how Queens fans denigrate Rodgers for a “mediocre season” (31 TDs/8 INT) when that is better than a career year for noodle armed Teddy Twogloves. Heck, at this rate, he needs TWO years to do what Rodgers does in ONE (30+ TDs). Too bad the Queens traded up and took the lesser QB when Carr was still sitting there (for which we Raider fans will forever be grateful!)

Why was there a telescope spotted above the Patriots practice before SB 36? Sounds like the Rams cheated themselves and expected other teams to.

  54. Evidently, Aaron believes excuses lengthen careers. At least us Packers fans swallow it hook, line and stinkers.

  55. Wow. Didn’t know there was so much hate for Rodgers out there. I clicked on the story to hear more about the possibility of the equipment being a problem.

  56. The only technological advances that I don’t particularly care for are the ones that have allowed viking fans access to the internet, and therefore, Packer-related articles that have nothing to do with them or their team.

  57. Remember when Rodgers was crying that the overtime coin flip was the reason the Packers lost against Arizona? And now he is crying about microphones on the field being unfair to him as a QB. Boo-hoo. It is always something with this guy other that taking responsibility. Remember when the Giants didn’t beat the Packers in the playoff, the Packer beat themselves?

I’m starting to wonder about the educational system in Minnesota….

I don’t have to wonder about the educational system in Wisconsin….it’s obvious it doesn’t exist!

  59. Rodgers is correct. The puncture wouldn’t have happened, at least not on that attempted catch, had the pass been accurate, but the mic did cause the puncture. This was reported during the game and confirmed by doctors soon after the game.

Rodgers was really bad last season and so were his receivers. I hope the Vikings fans enjoyed it, because he might come back better than ever. Even as bad as he was in his by-far-worst season, his passer rating and QBR were better than Bridgewater’s.

Also, Erin Henderson was a Viking, which makes the use of ‘Erin’ by dummy Viking fans even more laughable.

  60. I don’t understand why people think he is whining or making excuses…excuses for what? They made the play if any of you remember and it was a damn good play…he fell on his mic pack. What is the excuse he is making and how is he whining? All the jealousy around Aaron Rodgers makes it so the guy can’t even have a conversation or an opinion without people saying SOMETHING. Get over Aaron and focus on your own loser team for once. Stop focusing on the team you “hate” so much…the obsession is getting old.

  61. The NFL would survive without adding Mic’s or cameras on players.

Rodgers put the ball where his guy could catch it and the defender couldn’t sure Cobb had to make a tough catch, but how many hundreds of times have you seen a player go all out for a ball get the wind knocked out of him, but still manage not to be coughing up blood on the field?

Also I love how ANYTIME Rodgers gives an interview and is transcript on PFT, as he gives his honest opinion on something, dozens of fans come out to whine, about his “Whining.”

  62. The mic pack injury I can buy. But his crying and refusing to wear a mic is enough to make me puke. And this unfair advantage crap is UNBELIEVABLE! The dude admitted breaking the rules to gain an advantage! Of course he doesn’t want a mic on, who knows what other rules he’ll say to break? Although I don’t know why he’s so worried. The NFL totally ignored his admission and proceeded down the path of lies and defamation.

  63. Who does Aaron Rodgers blame for the teaming blowing a
    6-0 record & finishing 4-6??

Who does he blame for losing ALL three home games to divisional opponents??

Who does he blame for loss my the regular season finale on prime time national TV with the division on the line to the rival Vikings??

Who does he blame for blowing ANOTHER 4th quarter lead in a playoff?? Last year it was Seattle, this past season it was AZ??

When is Aaron Rodgers going to FINALLY accept any blame for any of the Packers shortcomings the past FIVE seasons??!!

  64. Ah the usual Aaron Rodgers blame game.

It must have been the way Nelson tied his shoelaces which caused the ACL tear…not a bad pass from Rodgers.

Oh what? Yea yea, it was someone elses fault that the team almost went 8–8 if not for 2 miracle hail marys. Couldnt have been Rodgers’ poor play.

When will this diva realize he is the reason for so many injuries and choke jobs in Green Bay?

  65. When there is one thing and one thing only of importance to you, and you brag about being a most successful winner in the absence of supporting evidence, and you finally reach the highest level of success a team and it’s fans can possibly imagine, there is little motivation to repeat the effort.

There have been 46 division championships – and the Packers have only won the division 14 times.

That means 70% of the time – the Packers were looking up at the division Champion in the standings – and that in most cases was the Minnesota Vikings that they had to look up to.

Since the merger, the Vikings lead the division in wins – with 376.

The Packers would need to win their next 24 games in a row, with the Vikings losing their next 24, just to tie the Vikings.

Is amazing how little Packer fans know about their team, the division or the NFL…

And once again, stellar shows his lack of knowledge of the game of football.

The Packers would need to win the next 6 Division Championships in a row just to tie the Vikings 6 straight.

And knowledgeable football fans know it took the Packers until 1996 to win back to back Divisional Championships the first time.

The Vikings accomplished back to back Championships the first time back in 1969. They did it most recently in 2009.

It took the Packers until 2014 to win 4 straight. The Vikings accomplished 4 straight back in 1971.

Then after the Packers were 1 and done in 1972 (and did anyone ever tell you that they didn’t score a single TD in that loss to the Redskins?), the Vikings won 6 straight.

The Packers didn’t see another division title at the end of a full regulation season until 1995…

  83. I hope everybody realizes when Brady and Rodgers retire they will be at the bottom of their respective Divisions for the next 5 or 6 years until they rebuild. They have been living off their QB’s for over a decade
and longer for Green Bay who got exceedingly lucky with Favre AND Rodgers.
The Feast is about over for both teams and new teams will take their places.

  84. All of you people hating on Rodgers is sad. He was asked a question and gave his opinion. If you don’t want to hear his opinion don’t read the article. For you in purple, you didn’t like Favre when he was a Packer, but as soon as he became a Viking he was God..The same would go if Rodgers ever became a Viking..

  85. In January 2015, the Packers lost without getting the ball in overtime. The OT rules were not changed. In January 2016, the Packers once again lost without getting the ball in overtime. And you people expect us Packer fans to be OK with that?

  86. How is Rodgers making excuses or “crying” by saying this? He implied that the mikes are a detriment to player safety.

  87. Miss Rogers makes a living blaming other people for anything related to his job and his life.

  88. The man is asked a question in an interview
If he answers it he s is whining

A losing franchise. Always has been always will be
