Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall back at Jets practice

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets haven’t come to an agreement on a deal that would end their offseason-long standoff, so Fitzpatrick continues to be absent from the team as they kick off this week’s OTAs on Tuesday.

His top two receivers are at the team’s facility, however.

Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall didn’t attend the team’s practices last week amid reports that they were not happy with the fact that Fitzpatrick hasn’t been re-signed yet. According to multiple reports from beat reporters, however, both wideouts are returning to work out with the rest of the team.

Jets players will speak to the media after Wednesday’s session, so we may get some further details from the wideouts about their decision to stay away last week.

As for Fitzpatrick, the deal currently on the table from the Jets would pay him $12 million in the first year of a three-year deal with a base salary of $24 million. There’s no sign that Fitzpatrick is in a rush to accept that deal, which means the status quo will likely remain in place around the Jets a little while longer.

  1. Geno, get out. Brandon turned his back on you. Decker, despite that beautiful TD pass that you threw to him versus Green Bay in 2015, turned his back on you. The team is supporting a QB in Fitz-Fizzle who cost the team a chance to make post-season by throwing INTs at the end of the game. For a journeyman QB like Fitz-Fizzle who’s been in the league for 12 years running now, that is simply unacceptable. Geno, get out!

Would like to see how that offer is structured. The lion’s share of it has to be in bonuses so they can amortize it. The Jets cap hell is real this year ($3.1M available) and next ($4.6M without Wilkerson factored in). They can’t do less than a 3 year deal because of it. It’s not the Jets being cheap, Maccagnan inherited a damn tight spot.

What are you saying? The Jets have a tight cap situation for 2016 and then in 2017 they go about 30m under plus the cap raise.

Doesn’t matter who is back, the Jets are going 5-11 in 2016.

Jets do have a tough schedule but at least miami will be breaking their fall

  6. As a Jets fan, the more I think about it, the less I want Fitz back regardless of contract.

His numbers were great last year but they don’t tell the full story. When either Ivory or Powell were out, Fitz and the offense sucked. Essentially, Fitz is only a cog in the offense, he can’t elevate it. And when he is relied upon as the main weapon, he can’t deliver.

A lot of his stats came from heaving the ball up to Marshall last year.

From all accounts, Geno has been humbled and is a pros pro this year.

  7. The crybaby losers finally gave in after a week, what about their buddy Fitzcrappy

Yeah that includes Clady’s second year option, if he’s good he will see that money but if he isn’t then they free up a ton of space. Expect the Jets to probably hand Clady a new contract, though to lower the cap hit and expect cuts for Giacomini, Folk, and possibly Jarvis Jenkins if he isn’t producing behind an elite defensive line. Those cuts free up 9M.

Spotrac is unreliable for future cap numbers. First, they use the same total amount for the 2017 cap as they do for the 2016….their website does not include a projected NFL cap number for 2017.

For 2017, they also add up all 65 active players on the current roster instead of using the top 51 rule for the offseason cap numbers.

Assuming a cap increase of another $10 million, with all of these factors added in, the Jets should stand at about $20 million under the cap next year before any further signings or cuts.

  10. Not a jets fan but…….If anyone watched the Jets last game for a chance in the playoffs, why would you want Fitz?
This is actually shows the organization IS NOT doing a Joe Flaco with a NON playoff winner.

The top 51 puts them at 11 under excluding Wilkerson. Assuming an increase of $10M that leaves them at $21M, Wilkerson figures to be @$15M so they are looking at @ $6M in space without Fitz on the books.

  12. Jets are building a monster in the AFC East. It will take more than 2 years however to get it done. T-Bomb & Idzik left the Jets w/o talent at many positions and razor thin depth. Times they are a changing, Jets will continue to draft QB’s until they find a winner.

OverTheCap is usually pretty accurate with cap space estimates. They have us at around $21 M under the cap. That isn’t including any of the obvious cuts we will make… With those cuts in mind, it will be closer to $43 M

  14. Lol, they had what, a 3 day holdout to protest their friend not being paid. No fines, penalties assessed.? What a sacrifice. They are true hero’s!!!
