Vikings shuffle defensive linemen after B.J. Dubose tears ACL

The Vikings suffered a loss on the defensive line last week when B.J. Dubose tore his ACL during one of the team’s OTAs.

The injury will force Dubose to miss the season and the Vikings announced a move on Tuesday to fill the 2015 sixth-round pick’s spot on the roster. The Vikings waived Dubose with an injury designation, setting him up for a spot on injured reserve if he goes through waivers unclaimed, and signed defensive tackle Bruce Gaston.

Gaston got some exposure to life in the NFC North last season by playing in two games for the Packers and then seeing time in seven games for the Bears after they signed him off of Green Bay’s practice squad. Gaston had 12 tackles and a sack across his two stops and has also spent time with the Cardinals, Patriots and Dolphins since entering the league as an undrafted rookie in 2014.

Gaston will be trying for a reserve role behind Sharrif Floyd and Linval Joseph in Minnesota.

  1. I wish we had the kind of talent and depth that the Vikings have on their dline (and throughout their entire roster). The incompetent duo of Thompson and McCarthy let this guy go and Zimmer will probably turn him into a starting caliber player or pro bowler.

  2. Uneventful signing…..don’t really care, the only thing I care about is if Cody can do three posts in a row with everything spelled right. I’m guessing no, only because I’m sure the 6 year old that spells for him is probably in school today.

  3. Griffen, Robison, Hunter, Joseph, Floyd, Tom Johnson, Crichton, Ellis, Shamar Stephen, Trattou and Weatherly on the D line??? Wow Rick Speilman is really building something there!

  4. geez I’m surprised the Vikings didn’t have a plane gased up with Bustwater and Beaterson on it trying to convince BJ Raji to play for the Vikings

  5. There will be a lot more churning at the bottom before the season starts. A lot of folks had a shot at this guy and didn’t keep him. I don’t see him sticking here either. Once teams start making cuts and there are more options, I think he is probably gone.

  6. who? yeah, we signed a former packer for the first time in two years, wow.

remember when Favre signed in ’09, that was awesome.

  7. He’s at his last stop. Zimmer will turn him into a real player that the Packer’s coach’s couldn’t.

  8. LOL, they can get competitive intel out of him for not one, but TWO division rivals. Good work, Spielman.

  9. I miss the days of oversized shoulder pads. This dude looks like he’s wearing the equipment of a junior high kid.

Better yet he looks like he’s wearing 1980’s shoulder pads out of a woman’s sport coat.

  10. Allow me to dispel the myth of the Vikings roster being loaded with Packer castoffs. There are two former Packers on the Vikings’ 90-man roster now (Charles Johnson is the other one) and both of them played for another team before the Vikings acquired them. So they didn’t get them from the Packers, they just happened to have been on the Packers’ roster at some time in the past.

Meanwhile, Letroy Guion couldn’t make the Vikings but is the best player on the Packers defense.

  11. Hey, I’ve been reading up on this Gaston guy and it looks like we may have something here! From what I can gather, no one’s slick as Gaston, no one’s quick as Gaston, no one’s necks’ as incredibly thick as Gaston.

Three guys named Tom, Dick, and Stanley told me whose team they prefer to be on.

In addition, it looks like no one hits like Gaston, no one fights like Gaston, he’s done some wrestling but there’s apparently been some accusations of biting there.

He’s especially good at expectorating, so you know Zim likes that.

I couldn’t find his height and weight but I’m hearing he’s roughly the size of a barge.

  12. This guy won’t even beat out Johnson, Stephen and Ellis, let alone Floyd and Joseph. Just another dude to put on the D-line during camp and the 4 pre-season games.

  13. Bruce Gaston lol Just when you thought the Vikings couldn’t get any slower!

Another former Packer becomes a Viking. some things never change….

Not our fault that the Packers staff are totally unable to evaluate players

  15. Its unfortunate we lost a D lineman due to an injury

Glad it wasn’t an embarrassing situation like having one go on a leave of absence to think long and hard about whether or not he wants to keep playing with the same team.

  16. Sad to see BJ go down.

Not only did you lose a lineman, you lost a guy that could have been:

    1. A kicker that doesn’t blow a gimme
    2. A QB that can throw it more than 10 yards

But at least you gained another Vikings fan. He fits right in. Can play football. Fat. Probably dumber than a box of rocks.

“But why do you even ponder passing, I mean you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal. This is not Detroit man! This is the Super Bowl.”

We sure do. Thanks for the memories, Brett!

  18. He played in two games for the Packers. Two. He played in seven for the Bears, who signed him off the GB practice squad.

Minnesota ain’t exactly sweeping up GB’s crumbs. You clowns really need some new material. Your current stuff is as old as Moses’ toes and twice as corny.

  19. Gaston only had two games with the Packers but he played well, made some impact plays and held his own. I could never figure out why they cut him, since he had some upside potential.

The rumor was that he wasn’t well liked in the Packer locker room, a malcontent of sorts. So he is perfectly suited for the Vikings, the team with the most player arrests in the NFL this past 5 years. I mean, what’s a bad attitude when your star player whips 4 year olds, other Vikings were jailed for beating their girlfriends mixed in with all the others and lead by owners convicted in a $90 million fraud case. Heck, the guy is a boy scout by comparison.

  20. The vikings just went from terrible to not as terrible. They’re getting better!

They should sign Favre again. That was the highlight of the 2000s for me since GB didn’t win another Super Bowl in that decade.

That terrible interception was was just so easy to foresee. I mean who in their right mind didn’t know that when the pressure was on and the game was on the line that Brent would toss an inexplicable interception?

He did it in his last game in GB.
He did it in his last game in NY.
And he did it in his last game in MN.

I’m sure glad that Thompson fired him and gave the position to Aaron Rodgers, otherwise the Packers wouldn’t have won their 13th title and some other team would be thanking their GM for trading for some geeky kid from the Packers.

  21. It’s funny how the Packer trolls get all geeked up whenever the Vikings sign anyone that ever stepped in the state of Wisconsin. This guy is merely camp fodder.

  22. I think it’s because once in a blue moon when the packers actually sign someone in FA they NEED them to start and be all-pro’s to justify their expense. Vikings, who aren’t collectively on welfare like some other teams, aren’t afraid to spend money on camp fodder if it elevates the rest of the team.

    Hilarious.

Favre wasn’t fired, he left a crappy situation for greener pastures.

And you’re wrong…had favre stayed you may have had 2 or 3 Super Bowls. Too bad you got stuck with Rodgers.

  24. He played two games with the packers, more games with the Bears. But you only see the packer trolls here. Give it a rest.
