The Lawrence Okoye-as-football player experiment may be nearing its end.
The former English discus-thrower, who the 49ers tinkered with for three offseasons, has been released by the Jets to make room for the addition of defensive end Shelby Harris.
The Jets signed Okoye to the practice squad in November, trying him as an offensive lineman. That apparently didn’t work, as they moved him back to defense this offseason. The Cardinals also took a practice squad flier on him last year, hoping to tap into his size and athleticism, but it’s never seemed to translate.
The guy the Jets replaced him with was the Raiders’ seventh-rounder in 2014. He played in eight games the last two seasons.
