Bears choose Chandler over Jake Long

AP

Free agent offensive tackle Nate Chandler plans to sign with the Bears, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

The Bears had worked out fellow free agent tackle Jake Long but instead opted to sign Chandler, who was released by the Panthers in March. Chandler missed all of last season with a knee injury. He started 11 games at right tackle in 2014 and eight games in 2013 at both guard and tackle.

Chandler, 27, had recently set up a visit with the Lions.

The Bears plan to move Kyle Long — no relation to Jake — back to guard after injuries forced him to move out to tackle last season. They previously signed tackle Bobby Massie, presumably to play right tackle, and have second-year man Charles Leno at left tackle.

  1. Never heard of this guy and I have to think that if the Bears chose him over Jake Long than Long really is done.

BTW thank you for clarifying Jake and Kyle no relation. It’s crazy how many people think they are brother and embarrassingly, some of those are even Bears fans.

  2. Jake Long would have got hurt by week 4 and the Bears would have had to have paid him to watch and would have been combing the streets for his replacement.

    The Bears chose… wisely.

It doesn’t matter, they have jay cutler.

Keep the ignorant comments coming…Jay is better than more than half the QB’s in the league. It’s not your fault you can’t see past the QB position and think your expert, its just the brain you were born with.

Cutler / Hoyer will definitely be a lot better with young mobile OL-men. Look for Jay to scramble even more than last season.

Interesting take, since the article listed Chandlers own injuries an inability to play a full season yet and has played 19 games in his 4 year career.

Some people’s entire football knowledge is based solely on which uniform colors they like.

Sadly the Internet gives them a platform to mumble from.

  6. Or their knowledge is based solely on a qb that is overpaid and has done NOTHING in his 10 year career. He has had more coaches fired than playoff wins, but you’re right it’s based on who my favorite team is.

  7. Ionlyrootforawinningteam,

I like your name, do you live in 1985?
I like how you mention “cutler/hoyer” because I know bears fans aren’t even certain that cutler is a starting caliber qb, he will probably be benched this year and released in the offseason.

Oh wait he went the NFCC in ’10 where he sat out because his leg hurt, so I guess that counts as 2 wins, what an accomplishment!
    ——————————————————-

You mean the same injury that caused Maurice Jones Drew to miss 6 games when his team was in the playoff hunt? Drew was one of the most vocally outspoken questioning Cutler’s toughness, and then missed nearly half a season with the same injury.

Anybody that questions Cutler’s toughness hasn’t watched him play. His OL has been awful in Chicago, and he has taken tons of hits and keeps getting up. You can question his decision making all day long (including his whole ‘don’t vaccinate my kids’ deal), but questioning his toughness is way off base.

Is Cutler elite? Nope. But he is a solid QB. And his contract, which was bashed at the time, is now lower than Sam Bradford and Brock Osweiler’s deals. Which would you rather have on your team? I would take Cutler over either of those guys.

To bad, I thought that 2 brothers should be able to play together pretty well

    —————————————————
THEY ARE NOT BROTHERS, THEY ARE NOT RELATED……Chris Long and Kyle Long are brothers, Jake is not! Sheesh!!!

  10. Haha people trying to defend Cutler. Dude has solid athletic ability but the QB position requires mental toughness that he just doest have.

I like you stupidity and negativity, do you feel stronger and smarter with your hate towards a QB. Just because some ignorant fans don’t think so doesn’t mean a d@mn thing.

  12. My favorite comment of te year

“Keep the ignorant comments coming…Jay is better than more than half the QB’s in the league. It’s not your fault you can’t see past the QB position and think your expert, its just the brain you were born with.”

Yet he is paid like a top 10 QB. Yes he shows lots of promise – but after 10 years, don’t you think a QB should show more than promise? Using my brain – “better than most” is an average QB. He shows lots of promises yet does not win. It is always someone elses fault why they do not win. Bears pay him like an elite QB and gave up four high draft picks to get him.

All that equals – the Bears made a mistake with Jay and could have used the resources elsewhere.

  13. @paulchi2014

Nice “better than average” brain with your poor grammar and totally false rant.

Cutler is paid 14th on the list for highest paid QB’s in the league.

Cutler ranked 14th overall for avg salary of 18,100,000

Joe Flacco is #1 at: 22,133,333

Emery and Trestman destroyed what little there was left after Lovie and new OC Jay had to deal with every year. Who exactly is the better choice for the Bears (not including Hoyer) the past 6 years………crickets, end of story. Stop being a hater and root for you QB.

  14. If you can’t make a football argument – attack the grammar. The typical internet troll comeback.

When the Jay signed his contract – he was the third highest paid QB in the league. So yes they paid him like an elite QB. Yes they did give 4 high draft picks for a QB that has twice finished higher than 10th in the league (once when he was Bronco).

Your list of excuses is hilarious. He did play under Lovie and still couldn’t win. Destroyed what was left of Lovie’s teams? You mean the team that got old and the Bears had to sign over priced free agents because they traded all their top draft picks away to get Jay. If you look back at the excuses during that time – there was no blame on the coaches. They were – he had no receivers, so they went out and got receivers. Then it was he has no offensive line. Then it was he had no TE. Five years into the excuses were finally -it was the coaches and Emery. Never Jay – the only comment element during it all.

So Jay has a new OC this year. If what you claim is true, that means he won’t succeed since it is another new coach. Why not cut him and start someone cheaper, since he can not win with new coaches. It’s not who is a better choice – it is why the Bears doubled down on an obvious mistake. It is why Bears fans keep supporting an average QB like he is the answer.

Examine the games that Jay won for the Bears the over the last five year. I can count them on two hands. That is 80 games and Jay won about 10. Now examine those same 80 games and see how many games Jay played them out of. Crap, do not have that many fingers.

  15. I’m not a Bears fan, but this paulchi2014 is a pretty sorry dude. Not being a Bears fan, yes Cutler has made many mistakes, but for you to claim that Jay takes full responsibility for that all those games clearly points that you have zero football knowledge and just have tremendous dislike for Jay Cutler. Trestman DESTROYED the Bears and that had nothing to do with Cutler other he had to take the heat cuz of m0ron fans like you. Nice rant, but you’re totally wrong and the other Bears ran is 100% right, root for your team.

  16. To the Jay hater,

“he had no receivers, so they went out and got receivers. Then it was he has no offensive line. Then it was he had no TE. Five years into the excuses were finally -it was the coaches and Emery. Never Jay – the only comment element during it all.”

Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were considered one of if not the best tandem in the league. Who was throwing them the ball? Jay, but he sucks right!

The offensive line has been utterly terrible for the past 10 years and everyone knows that. Just because you get some above average players, doesn’t mean that your QB is magically going to win the games for you. It takes the whole team and it is never one guys fault, which you claim so passionately over and over again. If the coaching, leadership and play calling isn’t there the whole team is going play poorly, including the QB.

Jay is NOT as bad as you try to portray, he’s much better option than taking a chance on a rookie at this point or starting a guy like Sanchez or Fitzpatrick that no one wants. Your unhealthy obsession with dogging Jay Cutler is straight nonsense and ridiculous. You act like the guy stole your girlfriend or something…..He’s the best the Bears can have and if Pace/Fox cut Marty B., Forte, Slauson, etc. and kept Jay Cutler, I would say you should really think about what you’re saying because Jay is going to play very well this year.

  17. Chandler can be helpful if he can stay healthy. Most don’t know him because he was on IR while the Panthers were making their SB run last year. He’s not going to set the world on fire, but he’s at least decent.
