Packers tight end Jared Cook has foot surgery, out until training camp

St Louis Rams v Seattle Seahawks

The Packers are hoping tight end Jared Cook will be able to add something to their passing game, but they’re going to have to wait until at least training camp to see it.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, Cook underwent foot surgery this week and will miss the rest of the offseason program.

The surgery was deemed “preventative” and they’re hoping that having it now will keep it from being a problem during the regular season.

The Packers signed Cook to a one-year, $2.75 million deal after the Rams cut him this offseason, making him one of their big free agent deals. He’s coming off a rather unproductive year, but the Packers think he can fill a niche in their offense.

“Big target — very, very athletic,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of Cook. “I think anytime if you’re just talking purely throwing the football and you’ve got big targets that can move like he does, he’s been an excellent addition. He’s been everything we thought he would be.”

While Richard Rodgers has shown potential, Cook is a more established weapon across the middle of the field, where the Packers are looking for someone to make more plays.
