Browns, 49ers underdogs in first 16 weeks of the season

The Browns and 49ers surely will win one or more games in 2016. At this point, however, Vegas thinks they won’t.

Via Yahoo Sports, the folks at ESPN.com have compiled the betting lines for the first 16 weeks of the 2016 season, and both the Browns and 49ers are currently underdogs in every game. (Week 17 was omitted because it was deemed to be too speculative; as if any, some, or all of the rest of it isn’t.)

Plenty can, and will, change between now and then. It’s still jarring to think that not one but two NFL teams are regarded so slightly by the gambling community.

If nothing else, the complete lack of confidence could be (and should be) used by coaches in both cities to motivate their players to defy the odds, Leicester City style.

  1. Vegas has it wrong as the Browns will shock the world this year.
    #5wins. Book it

  2. Lol frisco…what a trash bin of failure. Lighter fluid sales will spike around week 6 when they start burning jerseys again. That’s how “faithful” they are. The Browns are a better team too. 0-16… couldn’t happen to a more deserving fanbase.

  3. I’m worried my 49ers might win 6 or 7 games this year, therefore giving them a pick at 15 or so. What kind of qb are you going to get at that spot?

Even a bum like Chip Kelly has to be better than Tomsula, who went 5-11.

And the offense was far superior with Gabbert than Kaepernick, so you could add, at least, one more win to last year’s total: 6-10

And that defense. Ohhhh that defense, is going to be very good, surprising everybody. At least one more win from them: 7-9

So what gives? We can always count on Kelly finding a
way to butcher something. If not, just start Kaeperstupid and voila: 3-13

  4. This is a silly analysis. Being the underdog when every game is looked at individually is not the same as expecting a team to go 0-16.

I doubt the over/under for either team is anywhere close to zero.

  5. How could the Browns possibly be underdogs at Buffalo? That is beyond laughable. I guess that will just add to the humiliation when they stomp the Bills and what is left of their fan base in December.

    #billsmafia

  6. All I know is I will be in the house week 1 when we smash the LAmbs to start 1-0!! 🤘😡🤘

Oh yeah, and Gabbert is freakin trash.

Kap will lead this team back to respectability. GUARANTEE. 😎👍

Interesting that an arrogant, obnoxious, bandwagon fan base thinks they know what another deserves. I guess blowing the Super Bowl and getting curb stomped out of the playoffs wasn’t enough to humble the 1-2’s.

The inferiority complex of these hacks living in a podunk truck stop of a town is hilarious.

  8. Browns and whiners on the same level? Seems right.
That’s where Santa Clara belongs anyways , along with their norteño gangbanger fan base.

  9. The fall from Grace in SF which began with them running Harbaugh out of town has been BRUTAL! And it’s not over!! Chip Kelly was an absolute disaster in Philly – a full out train wreck!

  10. I like the Browns fresh start and especially their new head coach. They let several starters go that were never going to be more than average. Win or lose, they’ll more fun to watch this year.

  11. Here’s an interesting over/under type proposition:

The Steelers will make the playoffs AND score 20 points in a playoff game.

    or …..

    They won’t.

  12. Being a lifelong Niners fan, I remember the 1979 and 1980 seasons when we were underdogs in most if not all the games. We had a new coach come along and everyone thought it was gonna be more of the same. We proceeded to make the playoffs 18 straight years winning 5 GOLDEN RINGS! That was the dynasty of all dynasties, something a Seahawks fan can only dream about! Let me spell that out for you moronic bandwagon 12s, D-Y-N-A-S-T-Y!!!! There you go, now you know what it looks like on paper, seeing how you’ll never know what it looks like on the field!

  13. While it is incorrect to say that Vegas thinks both teams will go winless, they do have lowest Over/Under lines for total wins – Browns at 4.5 and 49ers at 5. So, if you want to bet on either team winning at least 6 games, it would be easy to book that action. They are both lousy teams that play in tough divisions. 4 wins or less for either would not be a big surprise.

  14. My only hope for the Browns is that RG3 is starting when they come to DC.. Haha nobody on the Redskins like him and Cousins will make him look foolish. A 4th round pick dominating the 2nd overall pick by at least 21 points. And then RG3 will be benched

  15. Just because you would bet against the Browns and 49ers on any given game, doesn’t mean you think they won’t win any games.

Reasonable people can agree that the Browns and 49ers will lose a lot of games this year. They will win a few, but it’s not easy to predict which ones. Against any given team on their schedule, you would probably pick the other team to win. Yet there will be some upsets.

  16. Browns have far less talent now then they had last year.

That’s what happens when you let most of your talent leave in free agency or outright cut them.

    Alex Mack
    Tashaun Gipson
    Mitchell Schwartz
    Travis Benjamin
    Karlos Dansby
    Donte Whitner
    Craig Robertson
    Johnson Bademosi

    Signed
    RGIII (Josh McCown is better)
    Demario Davis

So they got rid of their center and right tackle (god help you RGIII and Josh McCown)

They got rid of their safeties.

They got rid of a defensive leader and great talent in Dansby (Davis not as good), and an additional halfway decent LB.

They got rid of their top WR (that isn’t on drug suspension).

Cleveland Browns were already a bad team, but after cutting many of their starters who were worth anything. In fact many of those guys would be in the Browns top 10 talents on the roster list.

They should be underdogs every game. They might go 0-16. They’ll probably get a win or three, but matchup wise, which is what these game predictions are about, they are matchup losers in every game.

They decimated their roster, and their roster already sucked.

  17. This is how bad it is for ctiggs and the rest of you niners fans. Your big comeback is “oh yeah, we might be 8-8. And also, your tired inaccurate “nobody has it better”. You realize it wasn’t true when the Michigan coach said it 4 years ago and it’s not true now.

  18. Both teams have been to the top of the mountain, now they’re at the bottom. I guess the Redskins couldn’t hold onto that spot forever. The Browns keep making changes, in hopes that something new will work. The 49ers refuse to make any changes, and seem content.

  19. Jed and Trent have single-handedly managed to turn Quest for Six (Superbowls) into Quest for Six (Wins)! Nice job guys.

  20. Readers should understand that just because you are underdog in every game, doesn’t mean Vegas is predicting a zero-win season. If you have a 49% chance to win in every game, you’ll be underdog in each but would be predicted to go 8-8. Obvious to some but worth mentioning.

Was the field a 100 yards back then??

  22. Great article, except for the fact that betting lines having nothing to do with who Vegas believes will win the games (they don’t care) and everything to do with how they think the betting will go, and how they can influence people the most to bet on both sides, to maximize the money they take in.

And then there’s the fact that betting lines are fluid things and being an underdog in June could change in September if the teams aren’t as expected.

  23. Just as interestingly GB, Pitt & NE are no worse than a pick in any game. Doubt that means Vegas thinks they are all going 16-0 anymore than they think SF and Cle are going 0-16.

Please don’t ever compare dip kelly to the genius that was bill Walsh…ever

  25. Very interesting. You seem to think that saying a team is an underdog for each of 15 games is the same as predicting it will not win any of those games. Do you think if a team is a 40% favorite to win each of 15 games, that means it is a favorite to lose all 15 of them? Actually the chances of its losing them all would be about one in a million. Stephen A. Smith could have told you that.

  26. The Browns were a 3-13 team with a bunch of aging veterans who were on the wrong end of their careers to invest in them to make a turnaround. Ray Farmer was hoping for a quick fix when he signed Whitner and Dansby. Whitner is already declining, and Dansby will probably contribute in Cinci, but not for long.
The team is very excited about Hugh Jackson and the rest of the quality assistants that followed him here. He’ll still have his work cut out for him with 14 new draft picks, many of whom are expected to make the final roster. The Browns will win games this year, but I think the fans have curbed their expectations as far as win totals go.
This is not a knock on 49ers fans, but I seriously cannot believe the 49ers hired Jim O’Neil as defensive coordinator. In 2014, Mike Pettine called the Browns defensive plays, and they had a pretty solid defense except against the run. Last year, when O’Neil took over, the defense was aweful. If Pettine wouldn’t have turned the reigns over to O’Neil, they’d have been looking at at least 2-3 more wins. He was consistantly using guys who were predominantly pass rushers to drop into coverage, and his scheme was concerned with stopping the run at all, which lead to opponents racking up 100+ rushing yards every week. Hopefully for the fans’ sake I’m wrong.

  27. 49er fans can only bask in the shadow of yesterday’s triumph, because there’s no future worth speaking about.
