Report: Broncos have pulled offer to Von Miller

Whatever is going on with the Broncos and free agent outside linebacker Von Miller, it doesn’t sound like a long-term contract extension is getting done any time soon.

Shortly after Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Broncos had offered Miller a six-year, $114.5 million deal, Mike Klis of KUSA reported that the Broncos have pulled their offer.

It’s unclear why the Broncos wouldn’t be willing to sign Miller to a six-year, $114.5 million contract today if they were willing to sign him to a six-year, $114.5 million contract yesterday. But if the Broncos have truly pulled their offer and aren’t willing to continue negotiating, that would mean Miller’s options are to sign the one-year, $14.1 million franchise tender, or not to play at all.

Klis reports that the Broncos and Miller agreed on the six-year, $114.5 million part but strongly disagreed on the structure of the deal, particularly the guaranteed money in the first three years.

The Broncos and Miller have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. If they don’t, he can only play on a one-year deal in 2016.

  1. Regardless of what he ends up getting me and my close friend to the organization are sure that he will devote 10% of that to gambling losses

  2. It just seems like it makes too much sense for both sides not to get something done but stranger things have happened.

  3. All posturing. I’m sure Miller’s agent made it clear to the Broncos that the offer would not be accepted. So why not pull it?

  4. It’s all crazy money but maybe Von wanted crazier money than they were willing to guarantee. Frankly, I’d love to have guaranteed money on my job but unfortunately, I’m just like most work shlubs.

  5. Any takers want to bet that Von might be playing elsewhere this year? This seems like it might be about to get ugly, and will require the parties to go their separate ways…plus I think Denver has gotten a little of full of themselves here lately.

  6. In other words, the Denver front office wants to turn public opinion against their best and most popular player, in order to squeeze him in the negotiations.

In other news, Wile E. Coyote is confident that his bundle of TNT won’t be blowing up in his face

  7. Suh received a deal with $60 million gauranteed. Marcel Darius has about $42 million gauranteed in his deal. That huge number the Broncos threw out there may not be that great a deal if the Broncos are trying to structure the gaurantees that heavily favors rhe them.

The Broncos may very well be offering a slightly better Russell Okung deal for all we know.

  8. Does this surprise anyone? It has been obvious for a while that Elway and that idiot they have negotiating contract think they can set the market, and they are willing to tell people take it or leave it. They may save a little money for a few years but long term it will bite them in the rear. It’s already out there among agents that this is how they operate, so they better continue to draft well because it will become less and less attractive a free agent destination every year.

  9. He’s one drug test away from a full season suspension. I hope that’s not what happened.

  10. I thought Horse Face was supposed to be some genius GM? Possibly the worst off season by any team in the history of the NFL…

  11. Maybe he is about to be suspended (again) or maybe he was in the club with Aqib Talib and Elway has heard more on what went down that night.

Whatever it is, never let the glasses fool you.

  12. it’s one thing to pull an offer from someone who won’t get it anywhere else

this guy has no such problem

    Jerruh is wringing his hands

  13. What did Suh get, like 60M guaranteed? Maybe that 41M is a bit on the low side for that portion of the contract. Heck even Josh Norman is getting 50M guaranteed.

  14. Sorry, Von; publicly advocating for a no-talent, drunken weasel you’d never even met, then doubling down after said weasel betrays your trust with embarrassing lies about you, willfully disproving your faith in his comeback potential, can cause the bosses to question your judgment, character and loyalty to your own team, potentially costing you tens of millions in guaranteed money.

Your bloated ego caused you to weaken your own brand, thinking it was enough to polish a turd simply by slapping your name on it.

  15. Well, if you bothered to read the article you linked to, the reason would not be unclear.

It was not “yanked” off the table, the Broncos had set a deadline of Tuesday at 10pm. They were trying to get him into camp sooner.

  16. Can’t say I blame the guy for trying to maximize guaranteed money. He’ll likely never have more negotiating leverage in his career than he currently does.

  17. This guy got caught bribing the NFL urine tester. Why wold you want a PED abuser on your team? Smart move, Denver.

  18. What kind of non-QB idiot turns down $19+Mil/yr.? Miller & his agent gave Elway time to think about the contract and it’s ramifications and Elway saw the light. Elway’s not nearly as dumb as Miami (Suh’s contract) and won’t handcuff the team’s cap with a contract like that.

  19. “strongly disagreed on the structure of the deal, particularly the guaranteed money in the first three years.”
    _____________

Devil is in the details. If there wasn’t much guaranteed money upfront there’d have been a strong possibility they could have cut him loose before he ever got to the meat of the contract. Because nobody in the NFL ever gets to the end of these long-term deals.

  20. Sounds light. More cheapness by Denver. I was expecting 6/120/60 min.

Yep. The Broncos just got rid of a cap space Prima Donna, they don’t need another one.

  22. The farting on “Dancing with the Stars ” took its toll and therefor they pulled the offer fearing the farting would continue

  23. I didn’t realize how many PFT guys are so into Dancing with the Stars….

If he’s guaranteed 30 million, and his salary is heavily on the back end, then he might not even see half the contract if he’s injured and a cap casualty in the next two seasons. Von is probably smart to hold out, even not play this season, and hit the free market with a decent shot at 60 million next year. If the NFL cuts a guy it’s a business decision, if a guy holds out he’s a money chaser. It’s all business.

I do like the wild irresponsible speculation that he shot Talib though. Even though it’s not true, it would make great drama if it was.

  24. Fax gate 2.0. Elway will screw this up like he screwed up Dummerville’s contract.

  25. Watt got near $52 million guaranteed. Why would Von sign for anything less when he just led to Broncos to a Lombardi Trophy?

Just because Miami and Buffalo overpaid for guys does not mean Elway will do the same. Just look at the success of the three teams and it tells you Elway is ahead of the game.

  27. Mike Klis of KUSA reported that the Broncos have pulled their offer.

Mike Klis is an idiot who speculates on twitter. He reported Talib shot himself, which the Dallas PD is now saying is wrong.

  28. Huge risk paying any edge rush who’s game is built on speed that kind of money. Von is great but one injury away from being below average.
    Jevon Kearse anyone

  29. Hilarious that Elway is viewed as a genius GM. If Peyton had picked any other team, the Broncos likely wouldn’t have been the landing spot for Talib, Demarcus Ware, Wes Welker, and possibly even Sanders. Those players wanted to play for a winning team, and Broncos had Tebow under center when Manning CHOSE to make them an annual contender. It is ironic though that Elway is the “face” of the franchise with a horse mascot…..

  30. Raiders should trade for him. Yeah it’s not going to happen, but can you imagine?

Mack, Von, Aldon Smith, Bruce Irvin off the edges… geez…

    *************************
Please provide a link to where the Dallas PD is saying that he did not shoot himself. All I see is that they are still looking into it.

  32. If you want to become a winning GM in the NFL, here are a couple tips.
    1. Watch John Elway very carefully and try to emulate his every move.
    2. Watch others in the Broncos organization too because they’re getting their orders from Elway.
